I'm not sure how to rate this one. My Dad gave me the "Revised and Expanded" after the original edition left a significant impression on him and in his life.
I read the first half in late '24, and kind of really disliked it. So very much of it was just stories that fit in this pattern "Jimbob was a sad guy. He read my book/took my course and then his life was so much better! Look what the Lord has done!" I was unimpressed.
Then my family moved, and it got lost in the shuffle and I didn't see it again for over a year. When it did pop up out of a box again, I decided I should finish reading it for my Dad's sake, but I wasn't going to start over. So, picking it back up right in the middle of a chapter (yay, bookmarks!) I plowed on and the second half was much better. He seemed to base a lot more of his teaching off scripture, his "real world examples" were relevant to the topic being discussed and mostly told of people applying the Bible to their own lives. Though the second half of the books didn't affect me the way it did my Dad, it certainly stirred my faith and my conscience to improve my prayer life, family ministry, and walk with the Lord.
So, is the book really a tale of two halves, or was my heart just more open to it's teaching in '26? Who knows. I'd be interested to read an original edition some day. It was too long, and definitely didn't need to be revised and expanded. Maybe the original edition would (by chronological necessity) have fewer salesman-y success stories.
I will say that right up until almost the very last chapter in the book, he didn't seem to have much room in his Christianity for anyone who wasn't called to be a minister (aka most of us). And his mega-churchianity was a bit much, but also idk how to properly respond to a ministry bearing as much fruit as his apparently was with a small church model.
Anyway, my thoughts.
