some good info but repetitive and unspecific

This book has some good general information but has two problems.

The first is that the section on envelopes is basically cut and paste so instead of 5-6 pages going over all ASDR envelopes we get the same 3-4 pages 5 times as the author discussed volume, pan, and other envelopes.

The second problem is that the book did not pick a particular synth to work from. It seems as though the goal was to be able to apply to all synths and the general concepts can be. However, there was a lot of “your synth may or may not have this feature “ and it detracted from the flow and the repeatability of the lessons on “any” synths.

Before reading this I had no idea how to use a synthesizer. I had acquired a box that turned my digital piano into a synth (Skulpt) but it was just a collection of buttons and knobs. A quick read that focuses on the basics of all synths let me understand each function on the box. It is a surprisingly full featured tool for the price but mostly a doorstop until you read a book like this. The writing was very clear and kept to the basics. If you want to know how to make sounds with a synth and are a beginner, this is a great place to start.

Good introduction

Goes over the basics using a built in FL Studio synth. It’s good but a bit repetitive but that’s the nature of some of the controls. Note there is no actual examples of designing sounds, just what the controls are and how to use them. Look to other books for “here’s how to make a phat 808 kick”.
