These conquerors fool no one.

They seek to leash my people and claim our priestesses for their own sick uses.

One taste, and he hungers for my submission above all else...

With a kiss, he feeds me whispers of a coddled life kneeling at his precious feet, his offer nothing more than the life of a cherished pet.

But he won't have me or my ki, for his betrayal has given me strength even he didn't expect.

His people took everything from me, and Goddess be damned if I won't take it back.

USA Today Bestselling Author of The Last Tritan, Atom and Evil, The Feral Court, and many more to come!

Raised by her awesome parents in Canada's snowy north, Myra learned perseverance from an early age. She learned to speak in third person via extensive reading as a child, because... well... Northern Canada gets a LOT of snow. And when one isn't snowboarding, building quinzees, or waking up to teddy bears frozen to the floor (true story), one tends to read about places that are warm--even if being cold is preferable to being hot, every-damn-time.

All that reading gave Myra the gypsy bug. So, after college, (where she majored in professional gypsying) she moved to a ski resort in British Colombia to be a ski bum and chase the winter, because the cold was in her bones and it never bothered her anyway.

But then life caught up with her, as it does, and now she's stuffed full of enough life experience to write until transcendence (where she will be first in line to get a sweet android body and travel the universe until the end of time). So that's what she does when she's not listening to the voices or taking apart the electronics just to see their insides.

Cool right? Come be my friend on Goodreads, and have a free book for your troubles!! It's called Swallowed by Darkness, and it got me my USA Today Bestselling rank, baybee. Enjoy!!!

So new author for me and I believe this is a debut book and for that reason alone this was a pretty impressive endeavour.
An unusual and intriguing read that captured my imagination with its uniqueness.
The language used here had an almost lyrical brilliance to it: weaving an almost mythical web at times with such vivid intensity.
The fantasy setting we are introduced to here, in my opinion, had a very Roman flavour to it and I felt this was heavily influenced by that particular era: very much a plus in my book as I adore that time and culture greatly.
So Ravenous Innocence itself was completely different to what I was actually expecting: this isn't a criticism just an observation.
I was initially expecting more of a romantic vibe and felt this actually delivered more on the fantasy front instead.
This was of novella length and as of yet, there is not really any deep romance beyond the superficial between Mila and Captain Rawlings (Asher): this will hopefully develop and evolve more as this story begins to unfold.
Told completely from Mila's POV this went through a kaleidoscope of intense emotions.
Running the gauntlet from one to a hundred and though this originally started out quite slow it swiftly escalated to full throttle.
So I did initially find this a tad confusing as we are thrust into this fantasy setting with almost no real explanation and it really was a sink or swim moment.
Once I caught on and found my flow within the narrative I did become much more invested overall.
I also didn't think I really got to know Asher or Mila as much as I would have liked to: maybe because we are only at the beginning of that journey and still have a way to go yet.
Once I got to grips with the style of narration used here this was such an unexpected adventure.
A great start to this series.
I voluntary reviewed an Arc of Ravenous Innocence (The Last Tritan #1).
All opinions expressed are entirely my own.

So, it was fine. I was originally going to rate it two stars (or two and a half?), but then I remembered that this is the authors first published novel, and with that it mind, it’s actually quite good. You should read it. Go read it.

I was first introduced to Myra Danvers through her short story “Swallowed by Darkness” in the collection: “Alien Alphas Twenty-Three Naughty Sci-Fi Romance Novellas”. And I really loved her short story! I hope she turns it into a fully-fledged novel one day. After reading it, I noted down her name, to see what else she would conjure up in the future. And here we are.

THE CHARACTERS

description

The story is told from Mila Tannovic’s POV. First person. And she’s our heroine. One of the bigger problems with the story is that we don’t know a whole lot about our heroine. Sort of. We know she’s a young woman. She could be 18. She could be 25. I don’t know. We know her dad’s a senator, her mom’s dead (trope). No siblings, I think. She’s, like, basically Ariel – the little mermaid, I know. And like Ariel, she wants to break free and go see the real world… and she also wants to experience with her… powers?? Psychic powers? Gift? Truth? Whatever you want to call it. She controls “ki” (fun fact, that’s Japanese for like… life energy or something). We learn most of this in the first few pages. And thaaaat’s about it. I don’t know what she looks like, her favourite foods, how any fingers she has, can she read? What I do know is that I don’t mind reading the story from her POV: I like her thoughts, I like her ways. (I just remembered: She also has an amulet! Magical AND a family heirloom. Would you look at that.)

Other people included:
description

The Captain: AKA Captain Asher Rawlings. He’s tall. He’s dark. He’s handsome. What more is there to say? Did I mention he’s a captain? Which, to be honest, does nothing to impress me. Lots of people are captains. If he was a general, he would impress me. He, too, controls “ki”. He has a ring. On his little finger with a family crest on it. Did I mention he’s a captain? Anyway… He might be the romantic interest. Depends if this is a romance series or not, which I’m not quite sure about. He’s also a “Caledonian”, more on that later.

The dad. He’s a dad. He’s a senator. Blah. Blah.

The High Priestess: Is she a bitch? Is she not a bitch? I’m confused.

Josh. Why do you exist? Are you important? Am I supposed to like you? Are you a romantic interest? Either way, please stop talking. (“Josh” is mentioned 107 times throughout the novel, while “captain” only 103. HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO INTEREPRET THIS?!)

WORLD BUILDING

Or lack thereof. I’ll bet my favourite pair of knickers that the author has the longest and most complex word-document explaining the entire world building behind her novel. But this did not transfer perfectly to the finished product. With many fantasy novels, there’s a character who knows nothing (Hi, Jon Snow!), but is then introduced to world building and the magic they knew nothing of. And so is also the reader. That is not applicable to this novel, obviously. My point here being, that making sure that the reader feels at home in this new, strange land is muy importante. And I didn’t feel completely at home here. In Tritan. Aaaaalso, when the Hight Priestess is explaining the Tritan faith, shouldn’t our heroine and Joooosh – our favourite character – know these things already??? Or are they all atheists with zero knowledge of their county’s main religion? I have questions. So, yeah, the world building should also be introduced in a logical and organic manner.

What we know: There are two countries we know of: Tritan and Caledonia. (Actually, there’s also Elora, but we know so little about it, sooo yeah… Josh is from Elora, so it’s already my favourite fictional country, duh.) Well, Caledonia is also introduced as an empire. And an empire is actually a group of countries/states ruled by one monarch, so there’s that. Is Caledonia one of those countries, but also the name of the empire, since it’s the ruling country or something…? I don’t know. Stop asking so many questions. Who’s the emperor of this empire, you say? Octus Clavius. We don’t meet him, but we know he’s young and the 13th emperor or something. (This is one of the most successful empires ever, or the emperors have a veeeeryyy high mortality rate…). Just between us girls, I think our captain (not Josh, stop talking about Josh, jeez), is our emperor in disguise, ooor he’s going to murder the emperor in cold blood and sit on the iron throne. Because that is what the ancient Rome aesthetic is all about.

description

Talking about the Roman Empire... Hi. It seems to be the inspiration for some of the world building. There’s a senate. There’s a religion with a Goddess. Sexism in the political sector is a thing. They have a prime minister in Tritan. They mention sandals. Oh my. Sandals. Such sexiness. Blue robes. Our heroine wears a tunic, which was kinda like men’s wear by those days’ standards. I really wish the author could have spared a minute to explain what people wear and how they look like. Give us something to go on.

Glaith. Glaith is a thing. It’s a stone that’s mined in Tritan. It absorbs ki-senses, but also dulls them when in contact with the wearer’s skin. It also powers weapons and vehicles. So our world is kinda old-fashioned and modern at the same time. But I don’t know how modern. Like, do they have indoor plumbing? Can women vote?

Note: Now, that I’ve finished the book and digested it somewhat, I understand more of the world building (and thus more of the plot), but I was very confused and disoriented while reading.

PLOT AND PACING

The reason some people think roller coaster rides are fun is:
a) Because you wait in line for x amount of time for the roller coaster: necessary, sometimes boring, but it does build suspense
b) THE ROLLER COASTER RIDE!!!: very exciting but it only lasts a few minutes
c) The aftermath: you digest what happened, you look at how ugly you turned out in the photo, you talk to your friends. Maybe you’ll go for another roller coaster ride?

description

Reading “Ravenous Innocence” was like a never-ending roller coaster ride. SO. MUCH. ACTION. No down-time (almost). It wasn’t that the action wasn’t good or layered, but it truly exhausted me as a reader.

I need to know what our heroine is like during normal circumstances. Or I’ll have nothing to compare her to when she’s always caught up in some action filled scene. You can’t make friends with someone or get to know someone on a roller coaster ride. You learn what their scream sounds like. This is probably why world building and the characters’ personalities didn’t come across quite right: When trying to sneak in these vital pieces of information during an action sequence, they only take away from the action and it might come across as unimportant at that given time.

I mean, I think most of the book takes place in one day or something. Huh.

GENRE

description

On Amazon this book is listed as fiction. But by reading the synopsis you might think it’s a full-on dark romance or something. It’s not. I wrongly thought there would be more sexiness in this book. There wasn’t. But there’s potential for there to be more in the following books, I think. There’s a lot of chemistry between Mila and Asher, but it never escalated. With a little bit of editing, this could honestly be labelled as a YA book… and that’s not a good thing in my opinion. But that’s my opinion. I really like romance novels (dark, vanilla, I don’t judge), so I personally hope this changes in the next book. (Again, this is my personal opinion. Some people love fiction with no romance/attraction/sex/etc.) The synopsis was misleading, either way. So is the title.

THE END – SORRY

Sorry for this super long rant! This wasn’t supposed to happen! I know I mostly focus on the negatives, but that’s just my dark haggard soul talking. I actually liked “Ravenous Innocence”, believe it or not. It’s just that I felt very confused reading it, like I accidently picked up the second volume of the series and that’s why I don’t understand the heroine and the world building. Besides that, I couldn’t put the book down after I started reading, and I wanted to write a review with some constructive criticism afterwards. I now realise I want to know who Mila is and what this world is all about; and that’s because I did like the book; and that’s why not knowing frustrated me so much.

More than anything else I think this book is very promising. It’ll swallow you up and spit you out very confused, disoriented, and a little bit exhausted. But also curious for more.

I will be reading the next book, and I’ll still be looking forward to what Myra Danvers conjures up next. Cheers!

Well, wow. I really wasn't expecting that!

A couple of dark authors I adore were raving about this book, so based on their recommendation I gladly jumped into reading this. I'll put my hands up and admit that I hadn't even really read the blurb, so I really was taking a chance on this. Thankfully it was a chance that more than paid off, even though this wasn't the dark read I'd assumed it would be. All I can say is that Ravenous Innocence had me totally and utterly captivated, leaving me in desperate need for the release of the next book. In fact it is so good I read it in one sitting!

There is a lot of world building in the first half of the book, so whilst the plot perhaps didn't make massive progress, I was so immersed into this new world that it didn't matter. This is a fantasy/alternate universe tale of betrayal and treachery, underpinned by the use of a type of life magic called 'ki'. There were hints of a possible future romance, or even dark romance given that the heroine and hero are alternate sides of two warring nations.

The book is written entirely from Mila, the heroine's, point of view. She is a complex, flawed and sometimes naive character, which fitted well with her life thus far. It took me a while to get into her as a character, but this was mainly due to learning about this new world and where Mila fitted into it. Asher is still pretty much an enigma, I love how we don't know just where he falls on the good guy/bad guy spectrum - is he a good guy in a bad situation, a bad guy trying to do some good, or just a nasty antihero? Whatever the truth is, Mila's interactions with Asher were most intriguing, and clearly there are more battles and hot times to be had with this pair.

When is book 2 out please?

This book was not what I expected. Full disclosure, I bought this book over a years go and tried it...lost interest and DNF’d it. BUT! So many of my book-friends here love Myra Danvers, I decided to give it another go. And, once I got past the point where I quit it (about the 15% mark), I was totally swept away. It was probably around the time that Mila grew a backbone.

I was expecting a sort of hate-to-lust arranged marriage (maybe I totally misread the blurb!) story, but not this action-packed, girl on the run adventure. I am totally fuzzy on what “ki” is exactly (life force? Magic?), and the mythology and world building needs some serious tightening up. We are sort of thrown into Mila’s world and learn as we go about the Priestesses and ki and the Caledonians (though their back story is totally blank as well). It *almost* doesn’t matter, because the point of the story is that Mila is running for her life and coming into her “ki.” But a little more back story about the world and who’s who, why they hate each other, etc. would be helpful. The setting is a strange mix of modern (there is a “magic-tech” feel) and ancient Roman (at least, that’s how I picture it with majestic stone buildings and flowing robes and stuff).

After looking at other Danvers’ books, I think “girl running away from big scary male love interest” is definitely a re-occurring plot device. It’s not quite hate to love, more of a really intense game of chase, with death and mayhem thrown into the mix. I don’t care much for Asher, though I am a bit curious his motives...I wish we’d get a few more words from him beyond “you’ll submit and you’ll like it.” Banter would help him feel less villainous, although perhaps that is the point. Is he Captain Evil Pants? I’m ready to read on to find out...

I got sent the ARC of this in exchange for an honest review. I have been following the author for a long time and I am a big fan of her, especially as a new author. That's why I was really shocked by how much I really disliked the book. I felt like I had to force myself to finish. If it hadn't been an author that I wanted to like, I would have DNF'd the book about 50 pages in. I was really shocked to find that so many people really loved this book. Did we all read the same book? I'm not trying to bash the book I want to know if I'm the only one who had the same issues. (Warning; Spoilers ahead)

Main Issues;

Boredom:
I am sorry to say that I was immensely bored for the first 100 pages. Nothing important happened, there was no underlying story line at this point. Things just kept happening and then nothing came of it. She steals a broach, she kisses a guy, she goes to a meeting, she sees the guy again. As far as I can tell there there as no real consequences for her actions other than her Daddy is mildly annoyed with her which brings me to my next point.

Mila is unlikable:
In "Ravenous Innocence" Mila is introduced as a well off senators daughter who risks everything her father has worked hard to conceal so that she can steal a broach from a vendor. For the whole book I kept waiting for the broach to come back into to explained why she took such a great risk to get it. But no, the whole reasons is that she's a spoiled little rich girl. Next thing she is "Ki mad" and basically trying to have sex with Asher in Public. Which is fine but then why is she so angry with him, she was the one who forced the issue. I cannot think of one good characteristic that the book shows her to have until the very end when she sacrifices herself to protect the others. If I missed something, please indicate which parts of the book are mean't to make me like Mila because she is probably the least likeable character from what I can see.

Mila is 'Special':
A mildly annoying trope in books is that the MC is 'special' for no reason other than the author has created it that way. I usually don't mind this. However in Ravenous Innocence it is heavily implied by everybody right from the outset that Mila is so amazing which is incredibly offputting when your don't even like the character yet.

Ki?:
What is key exactly? I tried to imagine it was essentially the energy the world lived off but I don't understand how she became forever linked to Asher and the Lion by touching them but there was no apparent link with any of the Triloths who healed her using their own ki's. I spent the whole book trying to figure out how she was so strongly linked to Asher after a single kiss.

Asher:
I had no real feelings about Asher in this book. He wants Mila because she will make him more powerful and he is a captain. That's all I know about him.

Glaith:
The properties of Glaith confused me. They absorbed Ki so that you essentially couldn't use it but somehow she could always still feel Ashers connection. Also you could apparently overload Glaith with Ki and it becomes a bomb of sorts but somehow that tiny piece of Glaith she had on a necklace didn't get overpowered even though both she and her mother had apparently being using it to absorb power for a very long time. Can Asher feel Mila's Mam through the Glaith? Because the Glaith in the trees seems to hold onto a persons Ki forever.

Things that bothered me after I already stopped liking the book were:
1. There was no real story arc, none of the characters developed and I'm still not sure what the plot was other than the place that she lived in was invaded and she realises she is 'special'
2. Mila's Dad spends whole life trying to keep her out of the priestess clutches only to find the priestess are nice and he is basically okay with her being trained.
3. Priestesses are clearly important and high powered in society and even though it is explained how dangerous it was for Mila to not be trained there are zero consequences for these actions. The Trila Glis isn't even really that bothered.
4. The temple is mean't to be this sacred place no one ever gets to see inside but for some reason the coach driver is let in. Then they go to the lab where Acaster sounds like he gives tours all the time. Do they let people in or not?
5. Pg 128 "Who would dare attack us? We're a peaceful nation for the love of Goddess!" I am sorry but what kind of world do you live in where you hear an explosion and immediately assume you've been invaded. Bombings and shootings happens everyday in countries across the world and I can guarantee that unless they are in an open war with someone that no one would jump to the conclusions that they are being attacked by foreign force.
6. Why did the Caledonians even go to the meetings if their plan was to invade? Surely it would have made more sense to attack the Temple while the Trila Glis was at the senate meeting. You know, divide and conquer and all that
7. Caledonia is an Army Nation, surely they have some weapon that would have stunned the Trila Glis. It just doesn't make any sense for them to rush her knowing the power she has and why would she leave them alive when she could surely sense there intentions. War has very real consequences but the only person who dies is her Dad, that giant bird and a rabbit.
8. Mila refers to "so called Marco". What do you mean so called Marco? That's his name, it's not like he has described himself as an entrepreneur but you don't believe him and therefore he would be a "so called entrepreneur".
9. Why did Josh kiss Mila. It was weird and unexplained and never mentioned again.
10. Mila is a dick to Josh. I'm not sure she says even a remotely nice thing to him even though they've known each other their whole lives and he spends the book trying to save her.

There you go, I obviously had a lot of issues with this book. I don't think I'm being unfair. I do wish the best for the author in the future though

The idea of this world earned the 2 stars.

This was such a book 🙄

*Deep Breath*

This book got me like:

“I’ll be good to you,” he purred and swept his thumb over my pendant, caressing, making me feel it on my lower lip. His ki surged into my mind, hammering at me with a soothing promise, abusing the link he’d left behind with a kiss. “You’ll never want for anything…”

I wish I could convey what I'm feeling into words, this book has stolen my ❤. It has everything I’ve always wanted in an adult fantasy romance and it’s so strange to finally find a book which fits all my extensive criteria.

• A unique plot? ✔
• A fascinating new world? ✔
• Great characters with depth and actual brains???? ✔
• A smexy anti-hero who’s an actual anti-hero? ✔
• A strong female lead who isn’t automatically invincible and is only just starting to come into her powers and still has a way to go? ✔

This book truly is a masterpiece, it’s so different from anything I've read before. You might have read the summary and thought you knew exactly what you were getting into… you haven’t got a clue. This book was full of unexpected twists and turns and leaves you on a cliff hanger. If you have enjoyed books like Pathfinder’s Way by T.A. White in the past, then you’ll also love Ravenous Innocence. Give it a go! (and then come back here and fangirl with me lol)

Until April then!

An enemy war commander discovers a woman is hiding powerful and coveted magic abilities similar to his own. She narrowly escapes him during a surprise invasion, but they are linked through a magical bond and he will stop at nothing to find her and claim her power as his own.

Really interesting setup for a longer story arc. I liked the portrayal of Mila having powers that threaten to overwhelm her and her continuous struggle to keep her darker instincts in check. She is uniquely overconfident in her abilities, yet naive about how much damage she could actually cause if she lost control. Her scenes with Asher are intense but brief (by the end of the book, he still doesn't even know her name). I love the dichotomy of Mila being drawn toward him because he's her equal, yet she is staunchly opposed to letting herself be captured as his slave. There are hints that Asher might not be as much of a villain as he appears, so I'm interested to see how their relationship progresses in the next book.

It took me awhile to catch on to the world building, and I still don't think I've grasped all the details. I don't mind that the descriptions of Mila's ki (magic) are abstract and you have to use your imagination to fill in some gaps (in fact some of that writing is my favorite part of the book). What was harder to follow was the political situation between the two factions, and why one group had a variant of the other's magic. It's also a bit slow paced so make sure you at least hit page 100 where the fun really starts.

This really is different than the other Tritan book even though the idea is the same. It’s more. More world building. More character development. But it’s also less. It’s less addicting. Less sexy. An intense 24 hours of setting

I really really wanted to like this one but its a dnf for me at 63%

I cant stand the main character. I think the world building is really cool and I was finally starting to understand some of it. but the MC is just TSL for me. She just doesn't speak up? and keeps putting people in danger and I don't see a reason why she keeps that ring. I get there's probably a change in her later on but her mixed with everyone around her just pushing her on without knowing what she is. I kept hoping for her to grow a spine to be more take charge and confident.

as well as some scenes didn't feel like they were moving there was all this dialogue but i couldn't picture them running even as they were saying they had to hurry. it just felt like they were standing still having this conversation and that really stressed me out.

with the MC I didnt really get her or relate to her at all so she just bugged me. But damn I really wanted to continue maybe if i take a break and come back to it but right now I need to stop.

Incredible debut novel by Myra Danvers! This may be one of the most original stories I've read in quite some time. Myra Danvers is an exceptional story teller who truly excels at world building. She invites the reader into a new vibrant world populated with complex multi-dimensional characters. The story sucked me in from the first page and definitely left me wanting more at the end. I love rooting for strong heroines who fight for what they believe in and I got that in spades in Mila. I am still unsure where Ms. Danvers is going with Asher's character. Is he our anti-hero or straight up villain? Maybe both? Either way, he had me intrigued. The heat level is pretty low on this one but there's definite sexual tension which I hope will be explored more in future installments. Overall, this was an extremely enjoyable book and I can't wait for the next in the series!

WOW, THIS WAS PRETTY INCREDIBLE. I'M STILL WONDERING WHEN THIS STORY IS GOING TO END HONESTLY. THREE BOOKS PASS, AND IT SEEMS LIKE THE FUN IS JUST GETTING STARTED!

THIS REVIEW IS BASED ON THE FIRST 3 BOOKS OF THE SERIES.

MILA started off gullible, a little bit uncertain and also lost. We don't know what kind of powers she's hiding or what this world entails. The story opens with her in the market, where she's talking about her abilities to detect people's Ki and that she wears a pendant that helps to keep her power at bay. But, for some reason she was tempted to defy the rules just once and have a taste of the forbidden where it leads ASHER to her. Mila and Asher have a very very straightforward yet complicated relationship. Even till the third book, they're both still enemies yet not. RAVENOUS INNOCENCE portrays Mila's rashness, naivete and honestly I wanted to chuck the book when I found her to be incredibly impulsive to the point of stupidity, jeopardizing lives and I couldn't abide by those traits at all. It only hit me in the next book, that the author meant for her to be that way. Book One introduces us to the world building, the characters and what you can expect from it.

Mila's supposed to join the Priestess at the temple where people with abilities like her all go to. But having been kept from that fate, she's untutored and despite having great powers, is totally shit at handling them. When her Father dies while they flee from an attack, she turns Dark, becoming an Empath who is greedy for absorbing Ki. I quite liked that dark aspect of her, made her seemed powerful even though she hasn't quite learn from past mistakes. Asher's still hunting her after their first meeting, and we don't know WHY he's so engrossed with capturing her until later, and even then, you question the romance between the two of them. Was it real? Was it more? Was it all for the sake of power? Because this story was told in Mila's P.O.V, we won't get to know what goes on behind Asher's mind. Sadly.

Asher (an Elite) and Mila's (a Priestess) pairing are supposedly special because both were like the TOP alphas of what they represented, a power couple in other words. BOOK TWO introduces us to a savage Mila who has spent 5 years being the Queen of her tainted forest alongside her lioness. It also leads to her eventual capture by Asher and she constantly fights him, finding ways to escape him and their bond - which you'll get to learn more about since Asher forcibly bound them together by blood and the ore that is the core of this story. BOOK THREE ends with a lot of shit that already went down, but finally Mila gets the upper hand when she enslaves Asher instead after several rounds of lovemaking.

How will it all turn out? Will Mila and Asher finally get to some sort of truce? And what does Mila have up her sleeve to save the other enslaved Priestesses? Mila and Asher are enemies from the start, and I have absolutely no idea how the author's going to help them see a definite HEA while fighting for their own cause.

OVERALL while I didn't think the heroine was kickass because she was too rash, sucked at controlling her powers and made me feel like she hasn't come into her own yet, since Asher always gets the upper hand on her, and that she always falls for his taunts and traps....there was NEVER A DULL MOMENT and I can honestly admit that their sexual tension and cat & mouse games excited while it frustrated me. What can I say? It did the trick, got me hooked.

I can't wait to grab the next book when it does get published. I don't know how long I'll have to wait but hopefully it won't be too long that I just forget about this entire story months later.

Welcome to Milithia!

I always enjoy finding a new author and Myra Danvers is no exception. I read Ravenous Innocence in one sitting and fell in love immediately. Her debut release introduces us to Milithia which is inhabited by different races such as Tritans and Elorans. We also meet the aggressive, war-like Caledonians.

Our journey begins with a fateful meeting of Mila, a Tritan Senator's daughter, and Capt. Asher Rawlings, a member of the Caledonian Imperial Army who is also an "Elite." Mila and Asher have a power known as Ki which can be kept under control using Glaith, an ore mined on Milithia. This power they possess can be either a blessing or a curse depending on the reader's viewpoint. From the moment they meet, a chain of events is set into motion that will change their lives, the lives of others, and the future of Milithia forever.

Myra has set the stage for an epic Sci-fi saga that is going to be a pleasure to experience. From the betrayals to the violence, a High Priestess known as Trila-Glís, to lesser priestesses called Tri-loths, the amazing technology, and so much more!! In addition, we have an ancient prophecy that will play an integral part of our adventure.

**Be forewarned, if you are not a fan of cliffhangers, then this probably isn't the book for you.** But I strongly recommend taking a chance on Ravenous Innocence. I believe this is going to be a thrill-ride you don't want to miss. Myra Danvers has certainly piqued my curiousity and I for one cannot wait to see the outcome of Mila and Asher's destiny.

Congratulations Ms. Danvers and "Well Done" from a new fan/admirer of your work. I look forward to following your career and reading the phenomenal stories yet to be told.

I had the opportunity to receive an ARC and didn't know what to expect but I was surprised .. In a good way!!!! Myra is a great writer and has managed to create a complex world with captivating characters.

In the first place I must highlight:

The plot is very well created, it takes us to a new and exciting world where the war between two nations walks side by side with the desire, the power and who knows something more... something like love?

The characters:

Mila - I have to say that Mila left me with mixed feelings.
I have moments when I like her, I sympathize with her feelings but there are moments when she irritates me.

Asher - I have a new book boyfriend!!!!
I'm not sure what to think of him ... he's a mysterious character, but he made me very curious about his true intentions.

The secondary characters are very well in their context, but I confess I was confused about Josh ... I thought he was a big brother figure and not a potential love interest .
Mark also made me very curious and although he only appeared for 3 seconds, he completely stole the scene.

The only negative thing I have to point out is that the question of time ... I can not understand if everything goes on in several days or if everything happens in two days!!!

I look forward to the next books :)

It's downright decadent to be surprised by new storylines and authors these days with the endless streams of remakes and derivative, rehashed tales. I'm happy at the prospects of championing for a new heroine protagonist. The premiere standalone release of an author is a make or break it point for any reader, and I was delighted to see the pages fly until the unwelcomed end. I appreciate the author's confidence at throwing the reader right into the worldbuilding water for sink or swim purposes while skillfully explaining the mystical elements and system of government through succinct glimpses. Fast paced and sensual, I greatly enjoyed the primal hunting premise of this scifi/fantasy laden book. The slow burn of the characters' emotions and reluctant attraction make the wait for the sequel all the sweeter.

This was a great book to start off this series. I got an ARC copy of this book to review. And I have to admit it wasn't completely what I expected. But I still ended up reading it in one day!

The main character was very well developed, and she just keeps growing and learning throughout the book. The other characters were also very well written and just made the story that much richer! The ending does leave you hanging. So I can't wait to find out what happens next. If you like the unexpected and adventurous kind of book, this one is for you!

As I suspected, a tremendous cliffhanger. I might read the next book, if it concludes this tale. Otherwise, I'll wait or pass. I thought the book was kind of overwritten in a way. It was really hard to follow at certain points, so I skimmed. Very mystical with ki that seemed to be chi? Ended right when it became interesting.

Ugh

Ends at 89%. Weird words for things and speaking that I struggled to keep up with. No real romance or connections.

I cant believe I waited so long to read this!

The author is amazing a building a world and introducing you to it. You step into this world with Mila as she steps from her sheltered life and see her blossom into this force to be reckoned with through the book. I cant wait to dive into the next one!

Author Myra Danvers has captured my interest with her dynamic dystopia world. The character building in this story was down right yummy. I couldn’t put the darn book down and stayed up until 11pm to finish the book. Keep in mind I started reading at 8pm. The sleeplessness, was well worth diving into this wonderful word. The main characters Mila and Asher are so unique. Their power are amazing and together what will their power be like. Can’t wait to see. Keep in mind it’s not all about these two though. There are so many more characters that standout and are magnificent. I’m not the reviewer that gives spoilers so I apologies if you are looking for some. In my opinion, if you want a good story with intrigue, mystery, passion and suspense the dive into this new world. Yes I know it can be a gamble to read a new author. But I am happy to say that I was not disappointed 1 bit. Can’t wait for you to join me on this ride.

The story wasn't what I expected and that is not a bad thing, but it did mean I had to think a bit before I wrote my review. If you are looking for a romance story with a dash of sci-fi, then think again. You are not getting a lot of romance, at least not in this first book.

Myra Danvers created this whole new and interesting world. There isn’t a lot of background of the world, so a lot is left to the imagination of the reader and it took me little while to figure v=certain things out.

Mila is an interesting and complex character. Her whole world is changed in one day and she will never be the same. The interesting thing for me was while she is not giving up and doesn’t want to be a slave to Asher, in a way she is a slave to her powers which she can’t control.

I look forward to reading the next book.

Love this book! It’s fresh and different, with a big story to tell and lots of secrets to uncover.

Fair warning, it’s a little confusing and slow in the beginning, but a lot of information and world building has to be quickly established for a richly-drawn story like this.

Stick with it, though. It’s worth it. Some unfamiliar words and concepts (Trila-Glis, etc), make it difficult to follow at first, but once that foundation is laid, the story kicks into gear.

While there’s not a lot of Asher in this book (this is mainly Mila’s spotlight), it’s enough to establish the dead-sexy, smirky, calculating Elite male that he is, and show us what he’s capable of.

How underhanded (and hot) will Asher get in the next book? He’s not someone to underestimate, and neither is Mila. She’s a real firecracker.

This first book is mostly PG-13--the rest of the series is where it gets dark and sexy.

The Last Tritan, Book 1. Once unleashed, can immeasurable power ever be contained?

Even now, I wonder. If I just hadn’t… Why did I? It was so easy. What harm could it possibly do? I’m just Mila Tannovic. Only one other knows who, what, I am. How could a mere sip, or two, or three, of ki hurt? But there I was. Alone, unknowing, unsuspecting. And then—there HE was. Asher appears out of nowhere. Forbidden, tempting, enticing, then—gone! But he KNOWS! And he STEALS! How? Just…how? Then, he’s back, and he’s WHAT? A Caledonian, a traitor! As his kind rains a firestorm of destruction down on my world, he comes for me…me alone! Why me? Why not the others? His beguiling power snakes toward me, whispering seductive promises. NO! Goddess help me, no! I WON’T! I have secrets no one knows. He may think he’s won. He has no idea what I hold—and just how far I’ll go to avenge and destroy!

Myra Danvers is a brand new author to me, and I honestly had no idea what to expect from this book. I’d heard whisperings throughout the author and reader community, but whispers are just that…whispers. I could NEVER have imagined how Ms. Danvers would capture my imagination and heart. Mila is stunning!. Her transformation from a shy, timid woman scuttling around the edges of life to a force of nature willing to sacrifice everything is breathtaking. From the second I met her, I was captivated. How could I not be? Extraordinary doesn’t begin to describe her. She’s loving, mercurial, endearing, incredulous, thoughtless, alluring, and, above all else, passionate beyond belief. And Asher? Gorgeous, seductive, oh, so very persuasive. He bewitches with a look, captivates with his touch, arouses with a kiss, and dazzles with his power. He’s the irresistible force, the ultimate man of mystery. He mesmerized me as much as Mila did. Who, or what, is he? (To find out, you’ll have to read the book!) The polarizing extremes of magnetism pull these two together as much as they push them apart. And while these two alone make this book unputdownable, Ms. Danvers goes that extra step beyond. The supporting characters are so well-developed, intertwined, and woven into the tapestry that is Ravenous Innocence, the story would be a shadow of what it is without them. I have only three more words to add. I…WANT…MORE!

A final note. This is an adult fantasy. It contains explicit language and some suggestive, but no overt, sexual themes. If you don't enjoy this genre, this may not be the book for you. Check the book blurbs and reviews available on Goodreads, Amazon, and BookBub. Please use them before buying this or any book. A sincere recommendation doesn’t seem like enough for this book. I was enchanted and transported to another plane of existence. That’s no exaggeration. I’m positive you’ll love this book!

Thanks for reading my review and happy reading!

“What was another bump or scrape? Just add it to the list, because Goddess knew I couldn’t tell the difference between them anymore.”

“each and every bud shared an enchanting mix of black and silver—the most prominent among them, a matched pair…” Honestly, this was probably one of the best stories I have read this year, and I didn’t even like the main character. As a cosseted Senator’s daughter, Mila was untrained and inexperienced and arrogant with a capital A. For years her father attempted to hide her to give her freedom, but how can you hide from your own insanity? Even with the magic ore called Glaith, that was supposed to absorb some of the excess of her magic, she became a split personality. Good and evil, dark and light. The tug of war between black and white became a dominant theme and a mythology all its own throughout the story.

The world-building also explored this duology: While Mila was classified “Trila-glis”, a priestess whose followers practiced peace and healing, her opposite were the Elite warriors using the Glaith as weapons of domination. And unfortunately for her, Mila met a warrior called Asher who was just as power-crazed as she, and his hunger for her erupted in her society being conquered, leaving her and some scientists in a mad chase towards the mines.

The magic was described as Ki (like Chi?), expressed as coming from the heart, or core, and Mila’s Ki was hangry. Like a vampire, she fought her urge to suck in all of others’ ki. She could not understand how Asher could control his Ki, even as she succumbed. Again, this duology of control vs. utter abandon, mankind against nature.

Why did I like it so much? Well, it felt like a science fiction novel mixed with believable magic, and an alternate world. The action and drama kept me reading well past my bedtime. Although there was no spice, Mila’s and Asher’s bond made me feel like romance was present, in its corrupted way. I was not sure who was the villain.

The characters I really liked were the “good” characters like her father, his friend Josh, Marco, and Bella. They were the real heroes here.

I have to say that I was so excited about the release of this book. Myra Danvers is an author I have followed for a while, although this is her debut book on official platforms.
Once I started reading Ravenous Innocence, I couldn’t put it down. There was a perfect balance of setting the story, action and internal dialogue, with high emotion and constant intrigue throughout. She has a beautiful writing style, leading each thought and action onto the next in a seemingly effortless weaving of the storyline. She backs up the plot with a robust, well thought out fantastical society with Priestesses of the Tritan faith and the “ki” they alone can feel and in some cases manipulate, at the centre.
The concept of “ki” is central to the storyline and reminds me somewhat of the Taoist belief in a “source, pattern and substance of everything that exists” (Wikipedia). It heightens the energy throughout, creating great internal torment within the central character Mila, a flawed heroine and raw, untrained priestess, as well as drawing her to Captain Rawlings, a Caledonian elite.
The seeds are sewn for the romantic side of the story in this book so that it can be built upon and developed further in the rest of the series. Given that time has to be spent on world building and explaining the trickier concepts in this first book, the plot doesn’t make huge strides but it does hint at a lot more to come in the books to follow. Having said that, the energy is kept up throughout and reaches a crescendo at its conclusion.
Ravenous Innocence easily captured my imagination and intrigue, making me very excited for further installments. I think this author is one to watch. She has a unique narrative style and a really interesting concept here.

I received this book in exchange for a fair, unbiased review.

3 1/2 stars. I'm intrigued by this story and look forward to reading more but I am also a bit confused about how I feel about some of it.

The blurb indicates a much darker story than this book turns out to be but there is the potential for it to go dark. I don't have a problem with that but it is a bit misleading.

Particularly in the beginning, the ki-sense experience, seems to me, is written a little awkwardly. Maybe it came off that way because the reader is thrown into it quickly without an understanding of what is going on yet.

I appreciate that the audience isn't force-fed all the information in a primer 101. Danvers expects you to be intelligent enough to figure out some things are you are going along. Hopefully the rest of the reader's questions will be answered in upcoming books.

Mila is a mixture of reckless youth who really doesn't understand that she is playing with fire and a fierce spirit that wants to do what it best for her people and her world. She also has a dark side that she is trying to balance and not succumb to it. Mila is arrogant, impetuous, selfish, horrified at her dark impulses, courageous and strong-willed. I'm not sure if I like her. She is also a teenager who has roiling emotions that has experienced devastating loss and watched her world disintegrate. Never mind realizing her untrained power is the best hope her world has of regaining its freedom. Overwhelmed much?

Danvers has done a great job in creating complex characters. You think you know the person and then the character acts in a complete different manner. Mila, the high priestess, and Asher are primary examples of this. I look forward to getting to know them better.

An intriguing world, unusual powers, and fluid characters drive this story and I want the next installment now.

I've followed Myra from when The Last Tritan originally graced our eyes so many years ago. It was a long anticipated piece to be published. Readers were warned that it had become different, that it had grown... matured from version one to what we see here. Which is true. My memories of the story previously are but shadows of what the story has become.

I'm used to fast paced, complete novels instead of series that build the world slowly but in much greater depth. As such, it was initially hard for me to GET INTO the book. There is a lot of back story and development that happens in this book, which, now that I'm at the end of book 1... makes sense and feels like a good, necessary fit. But in the beginning I was frustrated cause I struggled to fall into the story.

That being said, the characters are, imo, fleshed out and the interactions between Mila and Asher leave me on the edge of my seat... like a slow seduction. The development of Mila from beginning to end of book 1 has been invigorating and I'm extremely interested to see how she develops in the following books. She isn't your typical heroine. She is flawed and contradictory and to me, that makes her more relatable. I feel the war within herself as if I were experiencing it myself.

If I could change a thing, it would be to change book 1 to encompass a full story arc. It was cut at a cliff hanger (which I understand why given the company Myra keeps), but I would have preferred a full story in one book rather than breaking it up over 3(+) books. Though this practice is hardly new and is utilized by many authors (indie or otherwise).

TL;DR - 10/10 will read again. Take a chance on it. If you're struggling to immerse yourself, stick it through cause it'll be worth it in the end.

Book Summary (tried to be vague)

This is Danvers debut book--and I was not disappointed. In this Fantasy/Sci-Fi world, Mila is a Tritan and is hiding a huge secret from the rest of her fellow Tritans. On an excursion in the city, Mila crosses paths with Captin Asher Rawlings from a neighboring Government/city known as The Caledonians. He quickly catches on to her secret and makes her his prey.

You are quickly drawn into the Tritan world. It was a great pace and didn't feel too fast/lack of development. Danvers is extremely witty and you will find yourself in awe of every interaction. The weight of Milas secret gets more complicated when Asher and the High Priestess Sacha find out.

**Spoiler Section**

Keeping her secret safe isnt the only problem. Mila is a rare priestess with an insane amount of power. Her power will be her end as she has no proper training to control it. She is relying on Glaith--which is a stone that absorbs her Ki. It is not enough and she uses other methods to push/pull in ki. Through all of this, Asher is hunting her. They have a bond and can sense each other. As she is trying to get her friends to safety, she is also the one making them unsafe with Asher knowing their exact location.

The story ends with Mila exposing herself to help her fellow refugees.

Thoughts

I really appreciate the set up of this story. I originally read this online (not the completion) and Danvers gives a lot more background information that leads up to book 2. Mila's family and countrymen are murdered in front of her and she is on the run. As a reader, you feel that panic. You feel that pain. Mila is like a ticking time bomb, and with each scene, I was worried about what would happen to her. Will she fall for the darkness?
