The North Novels, #2.

Two years ago, Logan Ward got the surprise of his life when he discovered he was the father of a two-year-old boy. Professionally and romantically adrift, he devoted all his time and energy to caring for his son. But now he’s searching for something more, and he and Justin head north to Alaska to try out the life his best friend Quinn has been raving about.

Kyle Shaw has been living off the land his whole life, comfortable with nature and the challenges of surviving in the Alaskan wilderness. He enjoys his seasonal work at the O’Connor Adventure Retreat and is looking forward to this year’s stint. He’s not in the market for anything more than hard work, good friends, and reasonably priced milk.

The work brought Logan to Alaska, but a late-night encounter with Kyle opens his mind to the possibilities of a future richer than any paycheck.

I'm often stoically silent or, if the topic interests me, a chronic rambler. In other words, I can discuss writing forever and ever. Fiction, in particular. The love story—while a huge draw and constantly present—is secondary for me, because there's so much more to writing romance fiction than just making two (or more) people fall in love and have hot sex. There's a world to build, characters to develop, interests to create, and a topic or two to research thoroughly. Every book is a challenge for me, an opportunity to learn something new, and a puzzle to piece together. I want my characters to come to life, and the only way I know to do that is to give them substance—passions, history, goals, quirks, and strong opinions—and to let them evolve. Additionally, I want my men and women to be relatable. That means allowing room for everyday problems and, for lack of a better word, flaws. My characters will never be perfect.

Wait…this was supposed to be about me, not my writing.

I'm a writey person who loves to write. Always wanderlusting, twitterpating, kinking, and geeking. There's time for hockey and cupcakes, too. But mostly, I just love to write.

This was a spontaneous buddy read with Renee & Ele, and our opinions on this novel are almost entirely aligned.

I loved Northbound, the first book in this series and was anticipating Kyle and Logan's story.

In terms of heat, this book didn't disappoint. Even though initially the men clashed, that just added to the ramp up of delicious sexual tension and sweet release when they finally got together.

Wait, let me back up ... Kyle and Logan got it on at 12 percent, but with a woman present. That's right. At 12 percent I'm happily reading along only to be smacked in the face by tits and pussy.

This scene was not necessary, and both men looked like losers ignoring the woman after using her as what? A toy? An instrument to Logan's gay rebellion?

Thankfully, the book got better. I love the Alaskan setting, and Dee includes many details about the way of life in the land of northern lights.

I usually don't like kids in romance novels, but both Justin (Logan's son, who's 4 years old at the beginning of the story) and Lani (Kyle's niece, 10) were realistically portrayed.

Justin was a sweet kid who went with the flow and got up at 6 a.m. (if that isn't realistic, I don't know what is), and Lani was a kick-ass girl who hunted, fished, cooked like a pro, and wasn't scared off by wolves.

The lust and love were instant, but I still felt a connection between Kyle and Logan and enjoyed meeting up with Quinn and Declan again.

I would have given this book 4+ stars. BUT.

1. Fuckery that was the relatively short but graphic M/M/F scene.
2. Sarah the dog whisperer and her fucking bikini.
3. Weirdly boring epilogue that focused more on Lani than Kyle and Logan.

Even so, this was a fun, sexy read.

2,5 STARS

So, this one was lighter than I expected. We get a MFM scene pretty early in the book. To say I wasn't happy reading about the two MCs sharing a nameless woman, is a big understatement. Then the MCs ignore their attraction and feelings... and boom, pretty fast they are in love, ready to move in together.

I'm not sure what I expected, but this wasn't for me. I need more angst in my books.

The writing was good and there are some pretty hot scenes, but overall I can't say this one was a remarkable story. If you're into sweet and light stories, maybe it will work better for you.

So only 2,5 starts rounded up from me.

Northland is a solid sophomore novel in Cara Dee’s Alaskan set series.

Picking up a few years on from the events in Northbound, this sequel sees all the characters from book one returning for more Alaskan fun, only this time the story focuses on the growing romance between previous secondary characters, Kyle and Logan.

Logan is a newbie to Alaska, having been convinced by his best friend Quinn (the MC from book one) to come and work construction for a few months at the O’Connor brother’s adventure retreat. Along with Logan is his four-year-old son, Justin, and together, they are hoping to carve out a new life for themselves, among old friends and new family in this wild but captivating land.

Kyle is a native Alaskan, born and bred, splitting his time between working seasonally at the O’Connor’s and living further north where he helps raise his orphaned niece, Lani. Kyle, once a wild and promiscuous bisexual, has slowed his roll over the past few years, no longer interested in meaningless trysts with anyone who was available. Lately, he’s been looking for something a little deeper and longer-lasting, realising quickly that he may have finally met his match in newbie-bisexual Logan.

Although these two get off to a rocky start, misinterpreting attitudes and motives, they soon find solid ground, learning from each other’s experiences (in and out of the bedroom) and helping one another in their often-overwhelming tasks of raising the young children in their care.

Their attraction is fast to flame, but their emotional connection is a slower, more natural burn. It could be said that these two went all in quite quickly, once they were a couple, but personal circumstances and life experiences dictated an easy fall into love and commitment, and I was more than happy to throw any skepticism I had out the window and just enjoy the fall.

Much like my experience with book one, I loved the Alaskan setting and the great cast of secondary characters that filled the pages of this story. My only exception is with my issues with how the one adult female character, who was perfectly pleasant and rational in the first book, became kind of unhinged and irritating here, playing the unnecessarily crazy and jealous not-even-a-girlfriend of Kyle. I get that her drama was meant to add some angst and possession to Kyle and Logan’s newfound relationship, but having her become this crazy woman, when she was the only woman, was a bit much.

On the plus side, I loved the children and I adored the way Kyle and Logan interacted with them. Kyle’s inability to curb his bluntness and censor his language around little Justin (AKA, cub/garden gnome) was endlessly amusing, and I loved how honestly he fell for these kids, when truth be told he never saw himself as becoming a parent or even liking children. It was all really heartwarming and sweet, and the family unit vibes built by these guys just added to the strength and authenticity of their personal relationship.

It seems I read this series at just the right time, too, with the recent release of Camgirl now at my disposal – a spin-off M/F romance, set a decade down the road, following a now-adult Lani as she navigates her complicated personal life.

This series is worth checking out!

Warning: random MFM scene at the very start that might be a shock to the system for all strict M/M readers.

As usual with Cara Dee, this was incredibly hot. I really liked Kyle and Logan together, and it was fun seeing all the characters again.

But. Kyle is immature and annoying at times, (so is Logan actually) and the epilogue just made me mad at him. Raising teenagers is fucking hard, but it works a lot better with listening and empathy than with yelling.

I don’t think I’ll read Lani’s story because it will just make me upset. My teenagers are struggling right now and I’m very emotional.

3.75 stars. Logan spends 3 months working in Alaska with his best friend while bringing his 4 year old son with him. Kyle is one of the regular workers at the resort for this three month period too. We met both of these characters in the first of this series, and with 2 children in this book - I loved the characters!!

It's no secret that I've come to adore this Dee's writing style. But there are a couple things about this particular story that didn't work for me as much as her other m/m stories have.

1. MMF scene at 12%. When I read m/m, I want to read m/m. I'm even choosy about m/m/m, so I definitely DON'T want to read about the lady parts. I was disappointed with this scene.

2. Insta-forever. (Not to be confused with insta-love). The MCs were together for about a month before moving in and meshing families and kids calling everyone . Way, way, way too much, too fast. Especially with children involved. They've had enough large-scale changes in both their little lives - can we cut the little ones a break?

3. Patterns forming. While it hasn't bugged me yet, I can see it bugging me in the future if there isn't a break from the patterns Dee has going on with her MC's. First, one MC is always heavily tatted to include neck tattoos. And there is always a sex scene that includes the MC bottoming not getting off, the MC topping pulls out, performs prostate massage while blowing. It's hot, but I think it's been in each of her m/m books in a very similar scene each time. And in each of her books now, the MCs have jumped right into no condoms very early on in the sexual relationship.

Still a solid read because I enjoy her flow, but I didn't quite get as much out of this one as her others.

I enjoyed this one almost as much as the first book. It's a touch angstier, but not in any heavy way. Logan actually managed to come to terms with his sexuality more easily than I thought he would at first. And, I love it when families form that weren't really there before.

We got some hints in Northbound that Logan might not be as straight as he's always assumed. He's never experimented with another guy, but after meeting Kyle last year when he visited Alaska, he's all kinds of flustered. It seems that Kyle pushes all his buttons and he's not sure what to do about it.

And Kyle has calmed down since his manwhoring days. His not so subtle attempts to bed Sarah and then Quinn, back when Quinn first got to Alaska two years ago, made him seem like a bit of a cad. He's chilled out, though, and that was good to see. He doesn't know what to make of Logan, at first, but it sure doesn't stop him from wanting the guy.

The very first sex scene happens really early in the book, like at about 13% or so. And it starts out as an MMF scene. That bothers me not (I thought it was hawt!), but most of my friends hated that one. My only quibble with the scene was that when Kyle and Logan started making out with each other, they pretty much forgot she existed. That's kinda bad form, guys. They were quite wrapped up in each other, though and the hotness, stayed. Through the end of the scene, anyway.

Logan has gotten used to being a parent, since an ex dropped off his son a couple years ago. He never thought he would ever want kids, but raising Justin is a joy and now he can't imagine another life. But he's lacked stability. He doesn't feel in control, at all, and that bothers him a lot. So he backs off from Kyle pretty much as soon as he sobered up and that left Kyle feeling a bit used.

Kyle is no stranger to familial obligations, himself. He and his dad have been raising his niece, Lani, since her parents were killed. Lani is a little spitfire who is far more capable in the woods, at 10, then I ever will be. And Kyle barely even knows just how much Lani has him wrapped around her little finger. Kyle doesn't think of himself as a parent, though he clearly is. He's uncomfortable around kids that aren't Lani, but he obviously cares about them and Justin latched onto Kyle pretty quickly. It was cute watching Kyle thrash about in those unfamiliar waters and I loved his 'pet names' for Justin -- 'garden gnome', 'tiny human', 'cub'.

The only real point of contention between Kyle and Logan (after the awkwardness of their night of hawtness) came from just how different Kyle's culture is, than Logan's. In Alaska, if you don't live in or near a city, you hunt. And you teach your children to hunt. It's survival. Logan didn't get it, right away, but he did learn and adapt pretty quickly. I liked that a whole big thing wasn't made of it - at least when it came to Logan.

And while Northland wasn't quite as good as Northbound, I still enjoyed it quite a lot. The sexytimes were hawt and Florida lost another hot guy to the wilderness of Alaska and a family was formed. It's a beautiful thang.

Great story, good steam although it went on for longer than it should've in my opinion. The whole thing with Lani and Jax was really not needed unless there's a book #3 in the works?

*3.5 stars*

This is the story of Kyle and Logan that we met in the first book of the series, It was a nice story, set in beautiful Alaska and I enjoyed it a lot. Kyle and Logan have great chemistry and they are super hot together. My favourite part was the middle of the book, I liked the slow burn and their coming together was beautiful.

I did have a couple of problems though.

*MMF scene on page at 12% of the book. Now, this isn't something I like to read in my mm books, but I don't mind it that much if it is brief and means something to the story. What does bother me, is when the woman becomes the third wheel in the scene. You want to explore and experiment? That's more than ok. But you can do it with just another man, you don't need a woman in the middle as an excuse. To be fair, the woman here *was* satisfied sexually, but afterwards the guys kept going at it without paying any attention to her, her questions went unanswered and she ended up leaving without them even noticing. Yeah, this was not a good scene.

*A lot of cussing in front of the kids. Granted, Lani was mature for her age, but still...

*The HEA seemed a bit rushed towards the end but it didn't really bother me.

Overall it was a good story, I love the author's work and it would have been 4+ for me if it weren't for that scene.

TBH, This one wasn’t as good as the first. It took me awhile to even like Logan. He was a mess. Kyle matured in this book. Probably my favorite thing was Justin, Logan’s kid. He was comic relief and seriously cute AND I hate kids in books lol. BUT the garden nome/ baby human/ cub stole my heart. Lani was Kyle’s niece and she was in the book often too. She gets a book next but I’m not sure I’m ready for that yet.

There were a few problematic parts which is why this is 3 stars ⭐️ instead of 4. I know this is an “older” book but still. Ugh. Crying like a girl should never be in a book or making fun of women and their PMS cycle. Cringe and Ugh. The scene at the beginning when they are in Anchorage was pretty cringy and borderline misogynistic too. Ick.

I think I’m ready to break my CD binge now.

Very meh read for me.

So we have Logan being a mess at the begining and the guys jumping immediately from "Hey nice to see you again" to them having a m/m/f threesome. Don't get me wrong it was hot but I'm not really sure how it all came about. And Logan.....boom.....butt virgin to full anal in about 5 minutes with no prep and a little packet of lube. Yeah good luck with that dude. Nothing about this whole first part of the book worked for me. (On a side note if Lani had been a real child I would have wanted to spank her butt. What a disrespectful little shit she was.)

So in the middle they become friends and then more and all that part was not bad. It was nice to see Declan and Quinn again and for the most part Kyle & Logan's story worked. Everything was pretty anti-climatic for me though. They're strangers for the most part at the beginning and then they're in love blending their families. Not much middle ground or development from point A to point Z. (Also the whole thing with Sara seemed weird and out of the blue to me.)

Then there was the epilogue that I just hated. I know it was a set up for another story but Lani is a brat when we first meet her as a child and a bigger brat when we see her as a teen. And I'm reading a m/m series. I don't even one little bit care about the future m/f story with Lani as an adult. NOT EVEN ONE LITTLE BIT!

I think most of my enjoyment of this book came from seeing all the characters from the first book and the cool descriptions of Alaska. So yeah....meh.

I so super loved this! I enjoyed it a lot more than the first.
I wasn't Kyle's biggest fan in the first one, he was just kinda...ugh or something, but I just love and adore him.
I liked Justin, met him in the first one and he was just having a rough time and now he feels he is kind of stuck in a rut and searching for something more for him and his son.

I did not like Sarah. At all. I kinda wanted to slap the shit out of her. That stunt at the pool? WTF?
Anyhoo...

There is an MMF scene, or is it MFM and then the F gets ignored and stomps off? Whatever. I coulda done without that. I mean, I think I get it. Justin thinks if he's got a girl in there it'll get him close to Kyle without...him having to admit it. Or something. Anyhoo. It happens, I could have done without it, but I survived. The p-word is used....cringing. Moving on.
I love how Kyle handled everything with Justin.
I love how Kyle was with Logan, Justin's son, and how Justin was with Lani, Kyle's niece.
I also appreciated that there wasn't some big stupid misunderstanding that drove them apart or whatever, they had things happening in their lives, people that were depending on them, decisions to make and they needed to take those seriously.

So yeah, a coupla things in there that were "ugh" or flat out "ew", but overall, I really liked this one!

It started out ok, only I had problems to distinguish between all the people - who belongs to whom. Then around 20% it was like a break for me. I couldn't connect with any of the characters, not even with the MCs from the first book. At some point I just started skimming, reading more thoroughly here and there but couldn't really care a lot. The epilogue is quite substantial, but mainly a setup for the coming short story. Don't like that.
Beware - it will be about Lani and Jax.

What I loved: Kyle’s commentary, nicknames, and general feelings about kids is one of the funniest things I’ve ever read in my life.

Kyle in general.

I love the inclusion of the Alaskan tribal culture.

What I didn’t like:

The late stage bomb drop drama that was totally unnecessary and felt like a “I need to create drama so Imma just throw this in here.”

I also hate it when grieving characters are vilified for grieving. When the grieving character has to apologize for… GRIEVING. I HATE it. More than anything in this world. Grieving in any form is normal and making a character feel guilty for it is so selfish and it made me really dislike the other character.

Anyway, my journey through Cara’s books has taught me she’s improved greatly as a writer. 🤣

Loved loved loved this book. Cara Dee knows how to send me to Alaska. This is a mm contemporary story, book 2 in the series and should be read in order. Main characters are Kyle and Logan. Lots of updates on characters from book 1. This is a gay for you story with kids involved. This book and series will be on my re read list.

Who the hell are you?).

El agregado de los niños es lo que más me gusta del libro. Alaska es un lugar interesante ciertamente.

I was hoping for a continue from Quinn and Declan’s perspective, but once I got a bit into this, I didn’t mind it shifting to Logan and Kyle. Not to mention I loved Justin! (And not to sound heartless, but I didn’t really care for Lani’s character). This was enjoyable to read for sure, but it had the same main issue as the first- not enough plot. It just kinda felt like the story didn’t have enough purpose to it.

*I was gifted a copy of Northland by the author. I am not compensated for my honest review.*

Logan Ward has been lost in life for the last few years. Two years ago, an ex showed up with his two-year-old son, turning Logan’s life upside down. Logan also met a man he was attracted to, further confusing him. Now, he and his son Justin are planning to spend three months in Alaska where Logan will work on a Retreat and learn the ways of Alaskan life. It sounds simple enough, but Logan is only more confused when he realizes he’ll be spending those three months working with Kyle, and that his attraction to Kyle hasn’t waned.

Kyle Shaw loves the Alaskan way of life, and he despises anyone who criticizes it without understanding. He’s been taking care of his ten-year-old niece Lani for the past five years. This year, he allows Lani to accompany him to the Retreat where he’ll work for three months. After spending most of his life as a playboy, not caring whether he bedded women or men, Kyle has recently tamed his sex life. But Kyle didn’t expect to see Logan again. And he certainly didn’t expect his attraction to Logan to be returned.

Logan will need to figure out what—and who—he really wants out of life and where his home is. Kyle needs to learn to overcome his fear of parenting, because before he knows it, he has two kids who want to call him Dad.

I’ve read several of Cara Dee’s books, and she’s an author I can count on for a good story that will draw me in every time. Northland is no exception. Although Northland is book two in The North Novels, it is a standalone novel and you do not need to read the first book in order to enjoy this one. There is enough backstory provided throughout the pages to give the reader an understanding of what came before this. That said, there is also enough to entice you to want to read the previous story.

Northland jumps right into the action, giving pieces of the main characters’ personalities and history throughout the adventure. Both Kyle and Logan show tremendous growth during the story. Logan starts out confused about his life and not very open to the Alaskan way of living, to the point of insulting how Kyle is raising Lani. But as the story progresses, Logan’s eyes are opened to not only what a good person Kyle is, providing for his family in ways many others wouldn’t, but also to how living in a different part of the country with a different culture can be a wonderful thing. Logan also realizes that defining himself by some type of sexuality isn’t what’s important—loving whomever he chooses to love is. I particularly loved when Logan made the decision to move to Alaska and made plans on his own for him and Kyle to live together, even going so far as to draw up blueprints for expansion to the cabin so Logan, Kyle, Lani, and Justin could live there as a family.

Kyle begins the story feeling like he doesn’t know how to be a parent, even though he’s essentially been Lani’s dad for the last five years. With guidance from Logan and a little help from an unassuming four-year-old “ankle biter,” Kyle realizes it’s okay to make mistakes, and having your loved ones’ best interests at heart is what matters. I may have teared up a bit when both Lani and Justin wanted to call Kyle “Dad.” And the way Justin drops himself into Kyle’s lap—literally—is adorable.

Even Lani, who is somewhat of a secondary character, is characterized perfectly. In many ways, she’s wise beyond her years because that’s the way of her people. She’s been taught how to provide for her family from a young age, so she’s no stranger to hunting for food. Yet at the same time, she’s still only a ten-year-old looking for her uncle’s approval. The way she lights up under Kyle’s praise will steal your heart. I also loved the relationship between Lani and Logan. In exchange for helping her with schoolwork, Lani taught Logan how to cook, and the pair grew as close as father and daughter.

Northland also provides a realistic look at the Alaskan way of life throughout the story. There’s a little bit of everything from stocking up on milk when it’s cheaper in the city, to tying a rope between buildings so you don’t get lost in a whiteout, to having to kill rabid wolves. These additions are worked into the plot seamlessly.

Northland is a must read for anyone who enjoys m/m romance and a good adventure. I will definitely read more by Cara Dee.

I think this might have been way more instant love then the first one. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it. Kyle was like a flirty fiend in book one, and I wanted to know more of him. I liked him alot in this book. He was totally different this time. I like that it showed that he had all of these responsibilities that he wasn't slacking on. Mmmm, I'm still thinking on Logan from the first half. I thought his treatment of Kyle in the beginning was really bad. To put someone in that position was so utterly selfish. What really sold me was the children. I love kids in my books. It brings this realistic tone into the story, add in the location for me and I found it enjoyable.

I felt Kyle was true to himself in alot of ways. He was serious about his job, his family, and his friends. I liked that he was always on the move, and always willing to help someone first. Logan redeemed himself big time. He turned out to have the most patience with Lani. Of course we got a glimpse of Quinn & Declan. As for Kyle & Logan together,I thought it would go well. I think they mesh well together. They're opposites with children, but were both looking for a family together. Let's not forgot about the steamy scene which were bonuses in itself.
I enjoyed them. This read like the ending of the series, with only two so far. I liked the epilogue at the end.

Loved! Liked this one better than Book 1; it wasn't as syrupy. The 'dirty talk' during sex still kind of gave me hives, but I LOVED Kyle's cluelessness with regards to the kids and anything that remotely fell in the 'relationship' realm. LOVED his conversations with Justin and Lani, and LOVED how he eventually embraced being a dad. It was kind of funny how he dropped f bombs in front of a 4 yr old, but he spoke to Justin like an adult anyway, which is kind of what made the whole thing hilarious. He and Logan were perfect together. Makes me want to move Alaska up on my list too!

It looks like the north novels just aren’t for me. After binging all of Cara Dee’s “Camassia Cove” books, I thought I’d enjoy this mini series just as much but unfortunately I haven’t.

It’s not that it was bad, it just wasn’t as great as the other books I’ve read by her. The threesome at the start of this book had me cringing so bad when they just completely ignored her and got so caught up with each other. I’m honestly glad she did leave but it just made the whole thing feel so unnecessary, I’m sure there was another way they could’ve done this without getting someone involved.

Dee turned gave Sarah a total personality change in this book. She was nice in the first one and then become all jealous in this. It seemed really out of character and I feel like Dee just changed up her whole personality to add a little conflict to the story.

Aside from Logan’s panic after his first time with Kyle, once they got together it was all smooth sailing and instant happy family like the previous book. It’s another pattern I’ve noticed in Dee’s books where the couple seem to go from 0 to 100 in the space of a few weeks 😂 it can get a bit repetitive and feels unrealistic too.

But aside from that, it was an enjoyable enough read. I love learning about cultures, so getting some insight into Inuit customs and lifestyle was a big plus for me and probably my favourite aspect of this book.

That was fun. I loved it. I feel like I can not concentrate on fantasy right now, but easy romace reads are just a thing for me now. lol
I really loved Kyle. The awkwardness and how oblivious he is sometimes. And I really loved Kyle and Logan together. The chemistry was just right. It was sweet and funny story. I loved kids too: Gnone aka Justin and Lani. I can see a story of Lani and Jax as my next read, heh.
That's all here to say - adorable and quick read.

Kyle has matured so much in the two years since the previous book that he's almost a different guy completely. Since he was a bit of a douche before, that's only a good thing. Logan is a fantastic dad to Justin (who is an absolute doll!), and The Retreat is a great place for the two of them.
