Fact 752 - Karma was a vindictive wench, and Luck, no lady.
Allie never believed in Karma, but after the week she'd had, she was prone to believe that if such an entity existed, it had to be a woman. Only a woman could hold such an ugly, nasty grudge, and make Allie's life so impossibly miserable. If spying for the enemy and a broken heart wasn't enough, someone had even stolen her favorite heels. Classy, right? Bad luck strikes again.
Fact 689 - Southern girls were supposed to be graceful losers.
Spying for Sloven wasn't the plan, but every attempt she made to escape his clutches only entrenched her deeper into a war Allie never wanted to be part of. Good thing her mama taught her how to fight dirty. Allie would play his game, and do the one thing he didn't think possible. She'd win.
Fact 521 - Never play a player, or in this case, a southern belle.
It was just one compromise...
"Once you take one sip of this series, you'll probably want to keep coming back for more!" ~ Goodreads Reviewer
Short and sweet with a spy versus spy high octane feel. This is a series to get sucked into and beg for more! I love the character development of Allie and the slow burn that is starting to spark hot and crackle! #Blade This insane roller coaster of exciting twists and turns rockets forward as the plot becomes more intricate and leaves you on ...another cliffhanger!
Though a fresh and interesting sci-fi adventure, I have a couple of issues with the “series”. I feel that the author should have taken all of these novellas and put them together to form a coherent novel. From book 1 to 2 there is a gap in how certain characters went from one place to another. Also waiting for the next installment you tend to forget what was going on previously.
A big bummer is zero development in character or story for the best friend, Jer, which sucks because she seems really worthwhile. This applies for other fun side characters.
I do enjoy Frost’s writing and look forward to the conclusion of the series (fingers crossed it’s made into a full novel) and hopefully a happily ever after! Thank you for the privilege of reading this book, Ms. Kay.
Things I loved: •Allie!! She is the coolest girl, not "perfect", but a pretty perfect person to have as a friend. She just keeps rolling with what her strange turn of life keeps throwing at her, being kind all along the way. •This strange new world and all the "people" in it! F.K. is a master at building new worlds in short amounts of words. •The unfolding plot with all the "woahs" & "whats???!" Constant twists and turns and forward movement of story. •Frost Kay writing!!! She's one of my favorite current authors! I read any & everything she releases! And when something new comes out the rest of my life STOPS or rather goes on without me while I disappear into whatever world Frost has for me in that book. It takes extreme willpower to step away until I finish the book and I usually just can't:)
Things I maybe don't love so much: •I have trouble remembering all the characters between releases & there's something confusing me. These books are quite short, novella length- almost more like installments to one long book or story. Many wonderful characters are introduced, but it has to be done quickly due to the length of the book and between releases I start forgetting some of the characters:/ Allie is well-developed, but there's just not enough time to develop other characters to the point of un-forgetfulness. And there was a scene in the first book (1st book SPOILER alert) when the "pirates" came on board the space ship and "tagged(?)" Allie & Jer that I'm confused about. Did this get explained and I missed it?!? Or is it yet to be explained and I need to be patient?? •The length of the books are such that, to be honest in my cheapness, I'm not sure I'd pay for each individual one if they weren't available on KU. My budget for books is not big enough that I don't have to be extremely picky in what I purchase.
I recieved an ARC to be read and reviewed honestly and that's what I've done here, all my own thoughts that I would have shared anyway:)
Onyx Elixir will leave you on the edge of your seat. Frost Kay doesn't disappoint. This book leaves you anxious for the next one. The Mixologists and Pirates Series is an awesome series that I just can't get enough of. With each book the story become more addictive. The intricacies of the story are astounding. You won't be able to stop yourself from laughing out loud, gasping, and cringing with the depth of this story.
Ahhhhh! The endings of all the books in this series kill me! Onyx Elixir left me breathless and enthusiastic for more. There are some jaw dropping admissions that are going to leave you feeling some sort of way. I don't think that I've ever read a series that I wished so badly was longer. I love the world Ms. Kay has built, and am so excited to see what happens next!
Yet again Frost Kay proves why she's one of my favorite authors. I couldn't put this story down once I started it. I'm not generally a sci-fi fan but Frost proves that a great writer can make anything interesting. She could probably write a story called The Toilet Habits of Marsupials and it would be funny and fun and unique but also in depth and desciptive - maybe too descriptive given the name of the story but she would find a way to make it work. I mean the name of the first chapter in this book is "Scaly Man Fish" so how could you not be like "WHAT? I must know what that's about". It's probably a good thing that these stories are so short, otherwise I'd be exhausted today, since I read it one sitting last night. The one criticism I have is that if you don't read one story after the other it may end up being hard to keep up with the character descriptions since there are so many important supporting characters. We do get bits and pieces of information that bring back the memory of most of the physical characteristics but it would be nice to have slightly more in depth moment for each of the characters as we're reintroduced to them. It has been a few months in between releases so that information has gotten a bit foggy for me but I was able to eventually figure it out and and visualize the scenes better. I definitely recommend this series and will absolutely be reading them again in the future.
What an ending!! These cliffhangers are torture but I love them!! Allie's luck in this book is just horrible. Love Blade, he is just so darn adorable. Cannot wait for the next book!!
Not bad, but not really great either. I preferred the first three books, they had a lot more fun vibe.. also, betrayal and suffering hadn't accumulated there to an almost absurd levels of the last two books. I still want to read next instalments, but I'm far from being as impatient as with the books 1-3. I would've preferred that there would've been more of that attitude that I read of in fun facts that feature in blurbs, or Ally would've been like that... I really wanted to see a Southern belle on the warpath, too bad that what we actually get is more of a poster child for abused and betrayed persons, overall quite grim... aaaand there are huge cliff-hangers promising even more of all that, because dear Ally, I won't believe your promises generously coated in the best Southern sass when I will read the next fun blurb facts.. Sigh... although, actually Ally gets the least blame, to be honest with the hand that was dealt to her and her reactions Ally appears to be on her way to a full time career of sainthood and not a barista or regrettably a Southern belle on the warpath.
Also, I can't believe that the elite special forces team that want to put an end to Sloven and his rule, come across as an incompetent bunch of amateurs, and it is obvious that Sloven is playing much longer and deeper game than any of them even have an idea. I don't believe for a second especially after this book, that the sadistic king doesn't know everything that there is to know about their special group and their efforts, AND frankly, I am very surprised that said elite group is under delusion that he isn't fully aware of all of their plans and therefore is one step ahead.. O-ooh, ok, who am I kidding, actually he's several steps ahead of them at all times. He is always exactly where he wants to be, and everybody else in their supposedly secret elite group are exactly where he wants them to be, and they even exist because for some reason this is still convenient to him most likely. They lose Ally all the time, or let something awful happen to her all the time, get her extra bugged and manipulated that's not in their interests all the time, and where they think they clever and wining, they lose - joke is always on them. The only things that seem to get accomplished are heated glances and inordinate amount of growling from Blade. They're supposed to be an elite team of MacGyvers or something like that, but they appear to be more like a team assorted of bumbling Johnnies English. Needless to say it also somewhat lessened Blade's appeal in my eyes, 'cause now I tend to picture him as Johnny English with pointed ears, at least in regards to his professional acumen and the profile of his mental faculties. That's the new thing that I've noticed after I finished reading this book. I also believe, and I think it was alluded in the book, that Sloven knows something about Ally, and that perhaps he needs her for some unknown specific reason. So, at least that's got them thinking, because otherwise they're absolutely outclassed and outmatched.
*Spoilers ahead*
I think Ally should've said something about Sid's betrayal as soon as possible to the team or someone who she trust most on it. They get enough blindsided as it is, and in this line of enterprise intelligence and information is everything. So perhaps I've read a bit too quickly that section, but I don't get why she didn't inform them at the first possible opportunity. The timing of Sid's placement in Sloven's scheme would've cued the group onto the fact that Sloven had been very well aware of their movements so early on and singled her out for his plans as early...
However, I don't know how much use that would've been, since overall I tend to find their tactics lacking (as well as strategy, but I'll leave it be, because then that would've been a different series altogether). In the last part of the book where they place an undercover assassin as Ally's double, while putting Ally herself with her new appearance pretty much as the focus as the'other woman' for Sloven to observe, I would've found it a vulnerable position to be in, especially when they can't pretend that they know what's cooking in the sadist's head. No, she should've been squirrelled away and hidden out of sight at the very least. Also, she just went to facilities and no one placed any capable inconspicuous guards or agents anywhere.. unbelievable. Aren't they supposed to have multiple back up plans for backup plans for back up plans if their original plan fail at any stage? Show some forethought maybe?
Well, that was the point where their elite secret team well and truly transformed into the team Johnny English in my eyes. I've read the blurb for the next book, and there's not going to be some brilliant move from that lot, she is going to be well and truly kidnapped. It is as one of my professors I had in university said once - you work hard all your life to build reputation and it takes many years, but you can lose it very quickly in only one day. With them though, they were doing their best to chip at it for the last two books. I'm gonna read the next book, but with much lower expectations this time.
This book follows on from after Allie Sai has been abused by the king and is asked to spy for him. She is struggling mentally (possible PTSD) with the actual memory of it and is anxious every time she is out or at work even though her friends are watching her back every minute.
During this book we find that the king is still spying on her and has had cameras installed in to her and Jer’s house which creeps her. Allie is asked to wear contacts which act as a camera for the king by someone, I won’t mention who because it’s the most shocking moment through out the book apart from the end.
The plot of the book is really good and is fast paced for how short it is. This is what I love most about Frost’s books they are so fast, so much action and they are really small, which annoys me at times because I want more and don’t want to wait for the next book but I suppose that’s what keeps me reading them. I feel that Allie’s character has developed a lot from the very first book and now she is a totally different person in a good way she is acting more like a woman and actually thinks of the consequences of her actions now where as at the start of the series she really wasn’t like this. Where as Jer’s character hasn’t developed much, she still supports her best friend and is always there for her but she hasn’t really changed much. I guess this is expected as she is just a side character and I’ve hear we will get more onto Jer in the later books, which is so exciting because it would be really nice to see how she has actually developed.
The relationship between Allie and Blade is just ahhh! Perfect, I love them so much. I’m so pleased Allie has come to terms with him and just OMG it’s perfection. Sorry I couldn’t fan anymore about them. I love how after Allie uses the Distortion band he still wants to be with her and protect her, it’s just so romantic. I can tell that Allie’s feelings for him have definitely developed.
I found that her friends have developed quite a lot to and they are a lot more cheeky and their true personalities are starting to show now, so I’m so pleased about this.
But overall this book is just perfect. I love it so much and the series is just captivating and unbelievable. I totally recommend this book if you love plot twists, love stories developing, character development and excellent/shocking story twists.
Whatever Slovan did to Allie...it keeps spreading. The team has yet to find a cure yet, and the stress is getting to them all. Allie doesn't want to die, but if Slovan is the only one who knows/has the cure...what does that mean for her? He's already told her what he wants...a spy. And what Slovan wants...he usually gets. One way or another. Can Allie and her friends outsmart him? Or is it soon going to be game over? Onyx Elixer is another intense addition to Frost Kay's series. I devoured this book and couldn't get enough. The story starts off intense and then takes a surprising twist. Of course, the author is going to throw something at the reader that we don't see coming! I appreciate the fact that Allie is...in a sense mellowing a bit. She's letting go of her massive grudge and...for me...being a bit more reasonable. I have to say that I was thrilled when the author throws us a bone concerning the romance angle but...that twisted cliffhanger!!!! I have to admit that I have LESS to complain about concerning this book. Like I said, Allie mellows out quite a bit. But let me just say this...THAT CLIFFHANGER!!! Come on!!! I need the next book like...now. Like right now right now. LOL! OMG! The waiting that is to come! Oy! I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. If you have read the series to this point...grab this book, but don't say I didn't warn you about the twisted cliffhanger. Enjoy!
"Women are meant to serve." That seems to be the mantra for Allie's life. What is so special about her that everybody, from the villainous king Sloven to her (supposed) friends, seem to be tearing her in several different directions? Is there anybody she can trust on this alien planet?
This (very) short book picks up right where Book 4 left off. Allie is suffering PTSD from her encounter with the evil Sloven, but she just can't seem to get a break from the betrayal, abuse, and trauma that keeps coming her way. The one thing that keeps her going is her Mama's voice saying, "You're stronger than you know, baby girl. You can do anything you set your mind to."
This is a very entertaining series with lots of great characters to love and hate, but I find that the time between releases of these very short books necessitates me rereading at least part of the previous book in order to remember what happened. There are a lot of characters to keep track of and it feels like the story is often rushed without enough time for the reader to get to know them.
I look forward to continuing the series, but these cliffhangers are starting to wear me out!
This series is written a little like a TV series. Chapters resemble scenes, books resemble episodes. It's a sci-fi story where a woman is drafted (tricked into volunteering) to leave Earth and settle on other planets that need more women. Doing so means sleeping through the death of everyone she knew and loved on Earth, while she traveled in cryo. When the heroine arrives, she's in a very mixed-race place, with all sorts of other aliens around, where everyone is assigned a job based on their skills. She is assigned bartender/mixologist, because she is from a famous moonshine-producing family on Earth. She's pissed off at the guy who forced her onto the transport (she was going to go AWOL), so she gives him a bottle of moonshine that she knows will give him the runs. Only then he dies, so she's being investigated for murder. But, women are scarce, and so they give her a way to work it off - by acting as a spy. She does it, and then figures out she's been duped, only, she's been poisoned herself while spying. At this point, I lost interest. but that was about 5 books into the series.
Holy moly! Frost Kay is quickly becoming the Cliffhanger Queen! Each book in this series seems to end with another cliffhanger that leaves you screaming for more! And can we talk about all the twists and turns blindsiding the reader at every turn! Good gracious, I half expect this series to end with Allie waking up on Earth to all this being a really bad dream and I'm pretty sure she would appreciate that. However, she wouldn't have met her friends and probably still trying to perfect her moonshining skills unsuccessfully on Earth if she happened to still be there. So eventhough she's been through countless traumatic events, blindsided by betrayals and being stalk by a insane maniac I think she would appreciate this adventure over a mundane earthly existence, if she survives this ordeal, that is! Oh and I must mention the Blade the hottie, man can Allie just give in to her emotions and take a chance on him? I sure hope the slow burn of romance catches fire!
Again another cliffhanger. I wish they would do to the point a happy for now or so it doesn't leave you hanging. These kind of books are not my favorite as I hate the hurry up and then wait till it is decided for the next book. I had started the series for a challenge and wouldn't have picked it to read if I knew each of the books were cliffhangers. I do feel that you need to read the prior books to get the story also. I think it would be confusing to start this on just any book. The story has pulled me in by now and I have enjoyed what I read but it does leave you at a point where it hangs and I see the next book said summer of 2019 but still not out and release date if for November 11. Over all if it was all in one book I think I would look up more books by this author, yet now I worry that the rest are all cliffhangers too as it is not stated in the blurb that this is one. I am hoping that the next book ties up the series and answers questions and gives us a good ending.
Ok, a quick “Cliff’s Notes” review: I loved Frost Kay’s Mixologists and Pirates serial and have no doubt that anyone will too. I read Amber Vial (separately reviewed) a while ago and loved it. My only complaint was that I finished it too quickly and then had to wait. I solved that by reading the remaining episodes of this serial, Emerald Bane, Scarlet Venom, Cyan Toxin, Onyx Elixir and Indigo Alley (Parts 2-6), all at once. It worked perfectly for me as each episode is a pretty quick read so in total these work our to be the equivalent of one long book. And a totally fun book it was indeed. Superbly written, with a great overarching plot, a wonderful lead in Allie Sai (just the sort of kick-a** heroine I adore), a perfect cast from Allie and Blade on down, perfect world-building and, at the end, a great last episode HEA. Definitely recommended.
Allie Sai is the sassy heiress to a moonshine whiskey empire, just living her best life out on her parents' farm, away from the hustle and bustle of an Earth that's made contact with a wide variety of alien species. What she thought was a simple dating questionnaire turns out to be a one-way ticket to Sars, the home planet of an alien race that has struck up a deal with the Earth to recolonize their planet - using human women....
I'd rate this a 3.5 if I could. I am beginning to wonder if serials are not for me.
We do get a bright spot where Blade and Ally get to spend some time together and maybe connect. I was also impressed by the smarts Ally showed in a bad situation.
On the other hand, Ally is again abused by Sloven again, betrayed by yet another person she trusted, and then had something horrid happen to her at the end of the book.
I get that serials have to end on a cliffhanger. I do like the series and these characters, but I need things to be mixed up a bit more with a little less threats and more emotional struggle around coping or who she wants to have a relationship with. At this point, I'd just take a book without a betrayal. Seriously Ally deserves a break.
Again with the crazy cliff hanger.. I don't know it my heart can take much more of this.
I will say this book wasn't as, punch gut exciting as the last, but it was still entertaining as hell, and in all, it was a nice build up for that ending and a heart clutching set up for the next book. As this book is short I'm not going to give anything away. Just know this is part of a continuation plot and timeline, so the other books are a must read to understand what's going on in this one. Also they are all just wickedly good, so there's that.
So yeah, this book is a must read, this series is a must read, so please take my super high recommendation and my stamp of approval, that you need this series in your life.
I'm not usually a fan of novellas or quick reads, but this series has me hooked! I am anxiously awaiting the next book!
While it does leave us on a pretty intense cliffhanger, this book in the series really felt amped up and had me on the edge of my seat. Well, edge of my bed if we are going to be technical, as I didn't want to put it down until I finished. I kept thinking to myself, "This is exactly what I've been waiting for!" This book in the series gives us not only the quirky, sassy, take no crap Southern Belle Allie that we've come to love, but shows us another side of her as she deals with trauma, treachery, and fear. I can't wait to see what happens next!
So the twists just keep coming and this series totally needs a warning label for suspenseful abuse overload! This main character can’t ever catch a break...ever...at all...nada! She may or may not have an ally in Blade, who may or may not possibly help alleviate apparently insurmountable odds. I am officially hooked into this series though, so I have to google cliffhangers anonymous. The pain is sweet fellow readers so be warned! Make sure you don’t read this series next to anything breakable or irreplaceable, you may feel like throwing something when you reach the end. All my reviews are always voluntarily written.
This is the next in series and we begin with ally trying to come to terms with the abuse she suffered from the king whilst we as readers still know that the king is spying on her with cameras in the house. Ally is alter given contacts from someone unexpected as the king was her to spy for him. We get to know more about ally and how she matures in this book as she begins to think about consequences of her actions. The relationship with blade develops also is he a friend or a foe only time will tell. The ending is a surprise cliffhanger and wants you knowing more
Omg I just finished onyx elixir and I was literally holding my breath. I can’t even imagine how there will only be 1 more book in this. I feel like this story is so good it could go on and on. I love the characters and the complex relationships between them. Frost’s ability to make you feel what they feel and become totally immersed in the story is amazing. I’m so invested in these characters. I was so so surprised at the ending. Ugh fml what am I going to do until the last book is released.
I received this ARC copy from @frostkay in exchange for an honest review.
My god! That freaking cliffhanger is so killing me!! Can Frost Kay be any more amazing in her writing?! Every installment has hooked me and set me on a Frost Kay binge lol 😂 Allie is like my role model and the plot twists totally fooled me. Another fantastic read that deserves 10 out of 10 stars!!! I can’t wait to see how the next book will challenge Allie next!
This book ended on quite the cliffhanger! My heart is beating frantically as my imagination goes wild....basically another awesome book in the series!!! There's a lot of moving forward for Allie in some ways while the plot thickens. I won't go into it as I don't want to give anything away but I have to admit that I'm waiting on the next book like an addict waiting for their next hit.
The next installment of Allie is here and it is a wild ride. A lot happens in this book and there are some twists that you will not see coming. Allie is still trying to get out of everything that has happened since she landed on Sars but so far she has been pulled in deeper. She is betrayed again and now she has to figure out how to not be a spy for the king and hope her friends can help her. Once again Frost leaves us with a cliffhanger and it is huge!
I had a hard time getting into this one. I felt like something was missing from the beginning. Like a detail was missing between the two books. Maybe I should have done a reread before starting this one.
Again it felt like a novella in length. Depending on the price of the next one I may now continue the series. Or I may wait to see if it's ever published as a complete work when it's done. It is a great series, but the length is just not long enough.
She throws a twist in this book you never expected. Allie is the most unluckest person - I don't know how she gets into the situations. You will laugh, cry, and want to kick the bad guy butt. The team has grown to trust each other a little and work together. Allie just wants something to go right for her and protect her team. Will she get her wish? We won't know until the next book because of that mega cliffhanger. Hats off to Frost for another great book
I love this newest installment in the Mixologists and Pirates series! The twists and turns kept me on my toes and I love how things are finally starting to develop with Blade. Allie is an amazingly strong character who has been through so much, but she keeps getting stronger throughout everything. I look forward to the next installment.
The twist and turns just keep coming and poor Allie can’t catch a break. I love how the story is unfolding and I love ally’s personality even more. I’m loving the relationship between her and blade. This book had me from the beginning all the way to the end. You out did yourself again frost. I need the next book like now!
