As both a psychologist and an adoptee I found this an excellent book in demystifying the role of the ‘hidden control panel’ of our minds, namely our unconscious implicit memory. It is extremely accessible both because of the way it explains complex concepts in clear, simple language with plenty of accompanying examples of how our implicit memory may work as an invisible barrier to keep us from making personal changes whether this be in personal relationships, work or business. It is empowering as it explains that apparently sabotaging behaviours that may prevent us from changing are not dysfunctional but old networks which were once designed to keep us safe when we were vulnerable. Using illustrative examples, Dr Lopez bravely uses both her own experiences as both an adoptee and as a therapist to explain this and to illustrate how our hidden control panel’s patterns may impact on our personal reactions and feelings and stop us moving forward, despite our rationale reasoning and motivation to do things differently. She also offers to readers the PACTS method as a way of starting to identify the roadblocks that may be stored in our implicitly memory networks. Most importantly this book is full of hope given the neuroplasticity of our brains and how a range of brain and body based methodologies such as EMDR and neurofeedback may be used to re-wire old patterns which once may have been important to keep us safe but are not longer adaptive. Examples of change are provided in the testimonials from clients who in their own words talk about the experience of using one of these tools. In summary, a highly recommended book for those who have found talking therapy insufficient in shifting engrained behaviours and feelings and using simple language to explain the theoretical basis and practical application of brain and body based therapies.

Dr. Julie Lopez goes over so many ways I had no idea the brain even worked. This book is incredible from start to finish. I learned about the brains implicit memory, Neurofeedback, EMDR, and brain spotting. Everyone needs to read this, it would help the entire population if they knew there were ways to better their lives through these methods. Highly recommend - it’s an easy read too! Though this seems like a complicated to understand topic, Dr. Lopez explains everything so perfectly that I, who had no prior knowledge in Neuroscience, was easily able to read, comprehend and enjoy.
