William Booth; Founder of the Salvation Army ~ Minnie Lindsey Carpenter
⭐⭐⭐ 3/5
A wonderful small book about the life of William Booth, the founder of the salvation army. I learned new things in this book about the salvation army and to be honest I have mixed feelings, both positive and negative.
Without doubt we can say William Booth was a great man, a godly man who spent his life with one purpose. To make Jesus known to others for their salvation.
I love the emphasis that the salvation army was created, to share the gospel with others. Their main goal was the saving of souls and they did this very well. Organised and disciplined and focused on the great commission. The urgency of this I feel is missing in other denominations.
On the negative side I was very disappointed to learn that the salvation army doesn't have sacraments such as baptism and communion, this was a real shocker for me to learn this, especially after reading about how William came from both the Reformed and Methodist background. I understand his thinking on why they don't use them or consider them essential.
Nevertheless this man was a great man indeed and won the respect and admiration of the people and many countries leaders. He is a great example of how God can use and work through a person who is open to being sold out for God. When young he was unemployed, no money and no prospects and at the later part of his life, kings wanted to meet him and he was given the keys to the city of London and Nottingham. Despite all the honours, when William got to speak it was always about Jesus and the people's need for Him.
Cant leave this without mentioning Williams wife Catherine Booth, she was a driving force behind William and the salvation owes its success as much to William as it does to her. Behind every great man is a good woman and William owes much of his success to her and he knew it.
Over details gesproken...
