You might be wondering, has my obsession with KDramas lead me to actually learn enough Korean that I am able to read a book in Korean?
That would be a no. But as there is no official English translation for this book, I figured it would be more accurate to leave my review on the Korean edition than it would be to leave it on the Indonesian or Thai editions. So, how then, did I get to read this book? Luckily, with the power of the interwebs, I found a fan-translated version online. There were, of course, issues with the translation, as it is pretty clear that it is not necessarily a professional job, but I'm still grateful to whomever translated it, because otherwise I wouldn't have had a chance to read this book.
So, next you might be wondering, what book is this exactly? This book is The First Shop of Coffee Prince by Lee Sun Mi, and it is the novel that the drama of same name was based on. Coffee Prince is one of my favorite Korean dramas, both for the great storyline and the great acting by my favorite Korean actress, Yoon Eun Hye, and by her talented, handsome, and charming leading man, Gong Yoo. If you haven't seen this show yet, I urge you to go watch it now. It'll take you around 17 hours, but it's well worth it. It's available free streaming on both Hulu and DramaFever.
I don't think it's just my bias for the show talk when I say that as a whole, the drama version is much more complex and enjoyable than the book. The book sort of feels like it's skimming over the story, only telling you the main parts, without really delving into the whys and hows and whos. It's pretty short, and easy to read, but I think that's because it just doesn't spend that much time dwelling on anything. Most of the characters and story are the same between the book and the drama, and those that have been changed have been changed for the better. It's also as if this was a spec draft the author wrote to submit to try and get the show approved, and if that's the case, I fully approve. As a book on it's own, however, I'm not sure I would have been invested enough to care about this characters in anything more than a "good for them" superficial way. There are a bunch of lines in the book I love, but I'm not sure they would have effected me so much had I not already loved the characters. I'm giving this book 3 stars, but had my opinion not been biased by the millions of stars I'd give the drama, it probably would have only gotten 2.
I'll finish this review writing by briefly talking about the story and characters from both the novel and the drama, since I can't actually untwine them to talk about the book characters separately, with no relation to the drama characters.
I love Ko Eun Chan. She is brash and ballsy and caring, and watching her slowly fall in love with Choi Han Kyul is both heartbreaking and adorable. Eun Chan is put in the situation of needing to masquerade as a guy in order to secure a job to support her family and pay off their debts. The unfortunate part is that the guy she is lying to the most desperately is the guy she is falling in love with, her boss, Han Kyul.
On Han Kyul's part, the more time he spends with the energetic and captivating Eun Chan, the more he likes "him," which causes him to sincerely question his sexuality. In a society where being gay is completely unacceptable, Han Kyul goes back and forth between acknowledging his increasing attraction to Eun Chan and denying it as impossible. It's a struggle for Han Kyul, as he tries to find a socially acceptable place for Eun Chan in his life.
Eun Chan reaches the point many times where she desperately wants to tell Han Kyul the truth, but can't let go of the fear that if he knows, he won't want anything to do with her. The differences in their social standing and finances seem too great to overcome, as well as the fact that Eun Chan is not the most "womanly" woman out there, especially compared to Han Kyul's longtime crush, the gorgeous Han Yoo Joo.
I'm not going to spoil the ending for you, so I'll just state the obvious. Clearly Han Kyul eventually finds out the truth. What I like about the drama version of that is it doesn't just end in a happy cloud of "now that we're together, everything will be perfect." This drama is more real than that, and I appreciate that about it. I love how developed all the characters are, not just Eun Chan and Han Kyul, who are the only ones that become close to being developed in the book, but also all the side characters, like Han Kyul's cousin Choi Han Sung, Yoo Joo, Eun Chan's sister Eun Sae, all the boys at Coffee Prince, and both families.
In the end, I would recommend this book only to big fans of the drama, who have already seen the show and loved it. Otherwise, stick with the drama, as you will truly find a story and characters to love and remember.

Coffee Prince has to be one of my most favorite Korean Dramas of all time. I knew that there had been a book of it at the time (2007), but I never thought of reading it until now. I found a translated copy of it online and immediately began reading. I felt myself being in the situation where people read books and then movies come out and then they decide which format is better. Honestly I think the drama is sooo much better than the book. The book is a somewhat quick and easy read that only briefly tells the story. There could have been much more added to the storyline, but it does get the main points across and has its entertainment value.
The storyline is basically about Go Eun-chan who is a girl that looks like a boy. She is small and pretty, but she knows karate and eats like a hippo! One day she meets Choi Han-gyul who wants her to act like his gay boyfriend so he can escape being setup on blind dates. This angers his grandma and he is given the option of either joining the family company or either creating a coffee shop of his own. If the coffee shop is successful he can live his life how he chooses. So Han-Gyul opens a shop and names it "Coffee Prince" where only really good looking men work there. He also hires Eun-Chan who everyone thinks is still a boy. Basically they both start developing feelings for each other. This makes Eun-Chan conflicted because she doesn't want to reveal her identity which could cause her to lose the job. Han-Gyul is conflicted because his attraction to her makes him question his sexuality since he doesn't know she is a girl. Throw in a mix of unique secondary characters, a few scenes of comedy and twists, then you got yourself an enjoyable story.
I liked how easy it was to read the translated version even though there were a few spelling errors. Also the book has a character called Nak Kyun who is not in the show. Ha Rim is blonde in the book as well. One of my favorite character in the drama was Min Yeop since he is always picking fights that cause comedy. This character is slightly different in the book because he never joins the coffee shop as a worker. Also, YooJoo and Han Sung only appear a few times. I guess a book cannot expand too much without being super long, but I did like the appearances. 3.5 stars!

Ko Eun Chan is a twenty-four year old tomboy. She’s too busy juggling part-time jobs, trying to earn money to keep her family—irresponsible younger sister and equally irresponsible widowed mother—afloat to pay attention to being feminine. What with her build, her strength and agility (she teaches taekwondo), her prodigious appetite, her rather spontaneous manners and the grungy clothes Eun Chan wears, she’s constantly being mistaken for a ‘pretty boy’, and being ogled at by females.
It’s not a surprise for Eun Chan, then, that a wealthy and arrogant young man, Choi Han Kyul, also takes her to be a man—and, soon after, comes up with a preposterous offer. Han Kyul’s family is setting up arranged dates in an attempt to force him to get married; if he can persuade the prospective brides that he’s gay (with Eun Chan acting as his lover), Han Kyul can probably put paid, once and for all, to the marriage plans. From there on, it’s a roller coaster ride as Eun Chan ends up working at an all-male coffee shop (the eponymous ‘1st Shop of Coffee Prince’) that Han Kyul establishes, and finds herself falling for her boss, who still has no idea that this man he finds oddly attractive is a woman…
I’ll admit I read this book (an English version, translated by someone named Eve) only because The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince happened to be the very first Korean drama I ever saw, and so it holds a special place in my heart. The plot is pretty makjang , what with all the tropes—misunderstandings, generation gaps, arrogant chaebol hero, feisty and poor heroine, stint in hospital, birth secret, and so on—firmly in place. But it still makes for a fun, breezy and engrossing read (even if the occasional racism and sexism made me roll my eyes). There are other problems, too: a secondary couple, for instance, are set up and seem interesting, but their story fizzles out abruptly, almost as if Lee Sun Mi decided it was time to wind up the novel quickly, never mind these two. Also, some of the plot devices were just too over the top for me to swallow.
The translation, I will point out, is obviously not a professional one: it's probably the work of a fan. There are errors of grammar, of syntax and even of spelling, but not enough to really interfere with my reading of the book. An interesting read, especially recommended if you've watched the drama, because you'll see how the drama is so much better fleshed out and scripted as compared to the book—and what a good job Yoon Eun Hye and Gong Yoo did, respectively, of bringing Eun Chan and Han Kyul to life.

Menyenangkan ketika membaca buku ini. Tentunya sangat berbeda dengan film series korea-nya. Mungkin ada 1 dari 100 orang menjadi wanita yang tampan. Sayangnya saya blum pernah bertemu wanita seperti itu seumur hidupku haha
Novel ini sederhana. Tidak terlalu banyak detail lingkungan sekitar, hanya bermain pada pikiran tokoh-tokoh, monolog dan dialog. Mungkin bila dihidupkan dengan detail-detail tertentu, akan terasa lebih menyenangkan. :)

I've gotten into K-dramas not too long ago and still am. Coffee Prince was the first K-drama that I've ever watched and absolutely loved it. So when I found out that it was based off of a book I knew that I had to read it. With this book there is no official English translation so I had to search the internet to find one. It took me awhile to find one but I eventually did. Personally I found the translation to be pretty good for being unofficial. I did appreciate that the translator explained some of the Korean words that are commonly used in dramas for the reader. There wee some parts that were a little confusing but since I've already seen the K-drama I knew what was going on. The book and K-drama are very similar but with a few differences of course. Personally I recommend watching the K-drama first so you can better understand the book. I will say that I personally enjoy the K-drama a little more than the book.

I still haven't seen the kdrama but this one was pretty good. The story was good, too bad I'm late, Its end of 2019 and I just finished it. Better late than never eh?

I never thought this day would come, the day I finally read the novel behind my favorite Korean drama of all time! I supposed that the only way for me to read this book is if I learned how to read and understand hangul but I can't see it possible in my near future. So when I found this book - translated in English - sitting in a bookshelf, I can't believe it but I immediately grabbed it and went straight to the cashier to buy it right away. I can't even hold myself, I shared it with few of my Korean drama addict friends to inform them the good news!
To be honest, it's quite difficult to judge this book alone because even when I was reading it, I can't help but imagine Gong Yoo's and Eun Yoon Hye's sweet moments in the drama. So to be fair with this review, I will be posting two different version:
A. Novel VS TV Series
I will start with comparing the novel to the series since I'm sure that most of us actually watched that first before reading this novel.
The TV series followed the story line quite closely to the original novel. It just removed a few characters, added more crisis but overall, it's almost the same. However, I think I like the version of the TV series compared to the novel especially with the blending of Han Sung/Yoo Joo's love conflict. Added to Han Gyul/Eun Chan, I'm also a huge shipper of Han Sung and Yoo Joo. Seriously, I was so happy when they finally reconciled and had their own happy ending. And I was equally horrified when my friend who watched the Coffee Prince Pinoy version told me that they made Yoo Joo a jealous bitch who stood between Han Gyul and Eun Chan's romance. That's so wrong! The book didn't even mention any progress of their reconciliation.
The novel focuses more with Han Gyul and Eun Chan. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining at all. In fact, I love seeing the development of their romance that started in meeting accidentally to working together. The progress of their blooming romance was really cute and I can't help but laugh when they're bickering all the time.
Also, the novel concentrated with the coffee shop's business strategies and the other employees too. So if you like Ha Rim, Sun Ki, and Min Yeop then you should read the book too!
B. Novel alone
The novel was easy, light, and fluffy in a very cute way. However, if you're not a Korean or familiar with their naming convention and terms, it might take you a while to grasp the story. But once you get the hang of it, you will really enjoy the ride.
On some points, I don't know if it's just the way the book was translated but I feel like the tone of the narration was a bit bland. I feel like I was reading sentences straight from a Google Translation that sometimes I can't feel anything from it. I think it would have been better if the book was narrated by first person, switching between Han Gyul and Eun Chan.
I also got confused with the use of pronoun. Again, if you are not familiar with Korean language, you will get confused with the use of "he" and "she" throughout the book. Korean language does not really care whether subjects are male or female sometimes (source). So in the book, when they talk about Eun Chan, the translator used "she" which would have tipped the other characters that Eun Chan is really a girl. This part will sounds confusing to the first time readers.
Overall
Oh, I was so glad I was able to read the novel! I hope someday, I can read it in the original language too. I would love to see the difference of tone if read in Korean language and sentences because you know, sometimes there are words that are difficult to be translated.
The ending was seriously cute and and fulfilling. Although the impact of the romance was not as awesome as the TV series to me, the novel still has it's own moments. I recommend this wholeheartedly with Coffee Prince fanatics.

Coffee Prince ini ya diambil dari rencana gila, HanGyeol yang menerima taruhan dari sang nenek untuk menjalankan bisnis kafe kopi dengan menaikkan keuntungan tiga kali lipat dalam tiga bulan pertama, dengan konsep para pelayan yang flower boy . Sebenarnya, aku lebih dulu liat dan tahu dramanya sih, tapi sudah agak samar aja cerita keseluruhannya seperti apa. Sebenarnya, dalam novel kisah romance antara Han Gyeol sama Eun Chan,namun lebi terpusat pada kehidupan dalam menjalankan kafe pangeran itu sih, permasalahan antarpelayan yang walau punya wajah seperti idol tapi masalah keluarga yang cukup pelik juga.

Gue selalu suka terbitan novel terjemahan terbitan Qanita Romance karena (menurut gue sih) penulisan terjemahannya cukup luwes dan rapih, dan penyisipan partikel seperti Ih, Sih, Ah, dan sebagainya jadi semakin menambah menarik. Dan...kalau dipikir covernya kurang cocok menurutku; sebenarnya kan yang menjadi OTP disini kan Han Gyeol dan Eun Chan, okelah untuk karakter cowok cucu konglomerat di cover cukup meyakinkan, hanya saja karakter cewek di covernya ngga menunjukkan karakter Go Eun Chan, yang punya rambut khas cowok(berarti pendek) di akhir sempat dibilang kalau rambut Eun Chan bertambah panjang tapi hanya sebatas pundak sementara di covernya, ceweknya lebih cocok ke karakter Yoo Joo, mantan kekasih sepupu Han Gyeol, ahjusshi plop-plop; kalau kata Eun Chan.
Demikian uneg-uneg Choi Han Gyeol. Cucu lelaki Presiden DongYi group, serta putra bungsu Presiden DongYi Construction, Lulusan Washington University jurusan Manajemen. Coffee Prince ini ya diambil dari rencana gila, HanGyeol yang menerima taruhan dari sang nenek untuk menjalankan bisnis kafe kopi dengan menaikkan keuntungan tiga kali lipat dalam tiga bulan pertama, dengan konsep para pelayan yang flower boy . Sebenarnya, aku lebih dulu liat dan tahu dramanya sih, tapi sudah agak samar aja cerita keseluruhannya seperti apa. Wow... Dari Juni dibaca dan baru selesai April? God...
Coffee Prince ini bercerita tentang kisah Go Eun Chan, gadis tomboi yang sering disangka laki-laki. Dia bertemu dengan Choi Han Kyeol, anak seorang pemilik perusahaan makanan terbesar di Korea, dan Eun Chan akhirnya bekerja di Coffee Prince, kafe milik Han Kyeol, di mana hanya ada karyawan cowok yang tampan-tampan layaknya pangeran. Hubungan Eun Chan dan Han Kyeol ini mirip kucing dan anjing, sampai suatu hari mereka sadar kalau mereka saling menyayangi. Ini tentu nggak mudah, karena Eun Chan itu laki-laki di mata Han Kyeol.
Jadi gimana hubungan Han Kyeol dan Eun Chan selanjutnya? Baca aja ya ;)
Ekspektasi aku memang cukup besar sama buku ini, secara aku cinta mati sama drama Coffee Prince. Best Korean Drama ever. Yang belum nonton, harus nonton ya. Kalian nggak akan kecewa. *jadi promosi*
Tapi memang kita nggak boleh terlalu banyak berharap ya, supaya kalo hasilnya mengecewakan ya nggak sakit-sakit banget. Hehehe...
Sebenarnya cerita asli Coffee Prince ini bagus, cuma berhubung aku sudah nonton dramanya, aku jadi kurang bisa menerima jalan ceritanya yang agak jauh dari cerita di drama. Hiks... Harusnya baca bukunya dulu ya, baru setelah itu nonton dramanya.
Terus tulisannya juga kecil, spasinya juga rapat, plus bukunya lumayan tebal, jadi perlu waktu banget buat menyelesaikan buku ini. Hehehe... Emang aku lagi malas aja kali ya pas baca buku ini.
Ya intinya Coffee Prince ini bagus kok. Asal kalian belum nonton dramanya aja soalnya lebih bagus dramanya :P

ini dulu ceritanya gak sengaja nemu di internet..
jadi ada orang yg dg isengnya menerjemahkan novel ini dr bahasa korea ke bahasa inggris dan diposting scr bersambung di blog. dan karena waktu itu aku jg sedang sama isengnya, jadilah aku ikutin itu ceritanya dr awal, bahkan aku kumpulin tiap postingannya sampe jadi satu file pdf yg rapi. kan novel ini uda dibikin dramanya tuh, makanya penasaran pingin tau versi novelnya. terjemahannya bagus deh, simple tp smart. dan komen2 yg ada di blog itu rasanya jg g berlebihan krn kupikir aku jg pingin nulis komen serupa, hehe... *sembah*
dan novel romance korea itu feel-nya berasa kaya nonton dramanya deh - seperti halnya baca chicklit feel-nya berasa kya lagi nonton romace comedy keluaran hollywood. kesannya so sweet, tp gak norak dan gak mesum. walopun ceritanya agak beda sm versi dramanya, tp masih dimaafkan krn sama bagusnya. dan teteepp, entah knp kok cerita romance korea itu seringkali endingnya gak pas aja. ada yg kelewat cepet, ada juga yg antiklimaks-nya malah kepanjangan. nah, yg ini jenis yg pertama, yg kecepetan itu. yg bikin ngerasa "lhah, udahan? gini aja?"

Jangan heran jika kamu menemukan banyak novel asal Korea atau yang bertema Korea di toko buku langganan kamu. Karena, ya, demam Korea tidak lagi diam di batas drama romantis, lagu-lagu catchy ataupun gerakan dance yang energik, demam Korea juga mulai melanda daerah sastra. Banyak novel Korea yang sudah wara-wiri tapi tak satupun yang membuat aku mau mengeluarkan dompet. Mungkin karena aku nggak mau terlihat bahwa aku ‘tertular’ demam ini, mungkin masih banyak novel yang lebih menarik, atau mungkin harganya emang mahal hahahaha. Semua kemungkinan itu berakhir saat aku melihat novel Coffee Prince ini. Ya, ini Coffee Prince yang sama dengan drama Coffee Prince yang pernah tayang di salah satu stasiun televisi Indonesia pada tahun 2008 atau 2009, which I love it so much! I even re-watch it on YouTube J Kalo kamu bertanya, ‘Lalu kenapa mau beli, kan udah nonton dramanya dan jalan ceritanya udah ketauan, apa ramenya?’ Ramenya? Novel dan drama jelas-jelas dua hal yang berbeda. Pasti ada beberapa atau banyak hal yang berbeda, bagus atau jelek. Nah karena itulah aku bela-belain beli novel ini. Gimana ya?
Sepertinya saya terlalu berharap lebih.
Saya sudah nonton dramanya, jadi sudah ada bayangan di kepala. Tapi bukan itu masalahnya. Bukan isi ceritanya.
Menurut saya, novel ini seperti sekumpulan dialog, dengan deskripsi background dan action-nya sedikit. Bagi yang belum nonton dramanya mungkin agak tidak nyaman karena dengan minimnya deskripsi akan berpengaruh pada visualisasi novel tersebut bagi pembaca. Kalaupun ada deskripsi, terlalu kaku dan sangat berasa skenario sekali. Saya ngga tahu apakah dari sononya seperti itu, ataukah translationnya.
Dari segi cerita, ada beberapa bagian yang berbeda dari dramanya, tapi menurut saya sih gapapa. Wajar, namanya saja adaptasi dan bukan co-pas. Jadi ada variasi di dalamnya bukanlah hal yang aneh, toh inti cerita yang menjadi dasar pembangun plotnya tersampaikan :)

So cute XD^^^^It's definitely different from the tv series, but it's good in its own way.^^^^Very glad that there is a drama, as some of the scenes were glossed over in the book (e.g. the robbery), and even though they kind of diverged with stuff that happens (the novel had less of the music producer dude [who really was a manager in the family company] and his love interest [which did get a bit le yawn in the drama]) I thought the drama and the novel complimented each other quite well =)^^^^Ending was a bit rushed, but still pretty sweet and cute ^_^"

Confession: My rating of this book may or may not have been(definitely yes!) influenced by my complete adoration of its kdrama adaptation. Coffee Prince is my favourite Kdrama ever. Though this book is quiet cute in itself, it cannot compete with the depth and characterization that the drama displayed.
Still, it can be a good read for the drama's fans who want to revisit Coffee Prince again. I found it interesting that there were a lot of changes when the drama was adapted from the novel. And, Han Kyul's character felt a bit different here.This made it feel as I wasn't reading the script of the drama.
Final Words: Adaptation is more superior than the book in my opinion, which does not happen often. Also, because of Gong Yoo <3.

I was really excited to read this, hey I loved the tv series of this! At first I though book-film-differences only happens in English books/films, but yeah didn't really think in Koreans too, it was a silly thought I know.
Actually shocked to see the differences, since they are not just different but WAAAY different, good thing I watch the tv series first and it gave me idea on this. And wait, the ending was. . okay? That one part of confession was kinda really bland, I honestly prefffer the tv series in that part.
I'm trying not to judge how korean novels are written on how this was translated by Kimchi Press, or it is just the translation? Execution of lines really is. . .omg, OTL.

Jujur saja versi K-dramanya jauh lebih bagus. Lebih well developed, terutama dari segi karakterisasi. Di novelnya ini kedua tokoh utama gagal membuat pembaca bersimpati. Konfliknya juga terbatas pada identitas Eunchan yang disembunyikan dan masalah Han Gyeol dengan keluarganya. Setelah kedua masalah tersebut terungkap, selesailah seluruh jalinan cerita.

I have watched and love the TV series and I absolutely love the book as well. It's amusing and interesting to read both Eun Chan and Choi Han-kyul's progress especially Choi Han-kyul's crisis whether or not is he gay and his oblivious of Eun Chan's real gender. Eun Chan is more interesting for she cares less of her real gender or getting mistaken in the eyes of other people.

this translation from kimchi press is a nightmare. please, there is not an inkling of art in the translation, and it looks like the book wasn't proofread.
i was also disappointed that the beach scene from the drama didn't occur in the book. and it ended abruptly, for me. i think the drama adaptation is way ahead of the original source.

Prior to watching the series adaptation, this novel would've been satisfactory. This novel doesn't offer much, but I loved the concept and the characters, every one of 'em. I think it could've been written better but I understand that it's a translated version. I still enjoyed it, though.

ehmm...ku beri bintang 3...karena aku emang suka coffee prince...walau sepanjang baca aku membayangkan dramanya :))
ada bbrp part yg berbeda..konflik yg ada pun hanya sebatas han gyeol sama eun chan..keterlibatan ajussi plop2 lbh sdkt dibandingkan dgn yg d drama..

Novelisasi banget, seperti memindahkan skenario (mungkin yang belum final, karena katanya agak beda sama filmnya), ke novel. Tapi membaca ini menyenangkan. Kisahnya menarik, dialognya lucu, temanya nggak pasaran dan alurnya nggak terlalu lamban. suka :D

After finishing My name is Kim Sam Soon, I found this book at the bookstore. I have the DVD, watched it a couple of times, watched the dubbed version in TV, followed drama recaps. In short, this was one of my favorite korean drama. So reading the book is a must.

Koreli isimleri ile cinsiyet analizi yapamamam ve genel olarak kitabın karmaşık bir düzende ilerlemesinden dolayı kitabın ilk yarısını neredeyse anlamadan okudum. İkinci yarısı daha hoştu. Sonu ve olaylar beklenen şekillerde gelişti ve bitti.
