This trio of novels opens with Derek ditching his New York City boyfriend in a panic on their way to get a marriage license, running off, and heading home to small-town Parkville, Tennessee. In a way, I really like that twist on the old cliche - Derek was not some poor guy we feel sorry for, ditched and home to lick his wounds. He was the one at fault, and it took a bit of time, watching him try to find his feet as he ghosted his ex, not to hold that against him.

Derek has his faults. But as he reconnects with his oldest friends, his mom, and his surprising Uncle Barry, he reveals a sense of humor, a certain clear-eyed awareness of his flaws, and gradually charmed me into liking him. Derek also meets Luke again - the golden boy of his high school days - and it turns out that they have more in common than he'd ever have imagined back then.

There is some emotion and angst in here, but it's handled with a very light touch. More often there's humor and whimsy. In fact, the stories step just a tiny bit beyond realism, into a little hyperbole, a little exaggeration. They remind me of going to a gay bar with a friend and watching his gestures get a bit more elaborate and his tone a bit lighter and more expressive, there in a safe space where he isn't being told to tone it down.

There's also an optimism - the town has secrets, and there are plenty of LGBTQ folk who live underneath the surface, in a typical Southern version of Don't Ask - Don't Tell. But when push comes to shove, the result is more often funny or warm than disastrous. The secondary characters are wonderful, with Uncle Barry the best of the lot, but so many others also show a multifaceted uniqueness. Even the antagonists are often at least partially redeemed. And the romance proceeds warmly, with enough ups and downs for interest. There is no on-page sex, but the physical attraction is as clear as the romantic one, and the style fits the story.

I got these three for free as a bundle - I don't think that sale is still ongoing, but I believe they are still at a very reasonable box-set price. I enjoyed them enough to immediately pick up the fourth solo book, to see how everything works out for Derek and Luke and all the secondary characters here.
