Find here the original trilogy from Anne Rice's bestselling series about the lives of Mayfair witches...The Witching HourDemonstrating once again her gift for spellbinding storytelling, Anne Rice makes real for us a great dynasty of four centuries of witches--a family given to poetry and incest, murder and philosophy, a family that over the ages is itself haunted by a powerful, dangerous, and seductive being called Lasher who haunts the Mayfair women...LasherAt the center of this the brilliant and beautiful Rowan Mayfair, queen of the coven -- and Lasher, the darkly compelling demon whom she finds irresistible and from whose evil spell and vision she must now flee. She takes with her their terrifying and exquisite child, one of "a brood of children born knowing, able to stand and talk on the first day." Rowan's attempt to escape Lasher and his pursuit of her and their child are at the heart of this extraordinary saga, moving around the globe, backward and forward through time, and between the human and demonic worlds...TaltosAshlar is the last of his race--or so he thinks. When he learns that another Taltos has been seen, he is suddenly propelled into the haunting world of the Mayfair family, the New Orleans dynasty of witches forever besieged by ghosts, spirits, and their own dizzying powers. For Ashlar knows this powerful clan is intimately linked to the heritage of the Taltos. This mesmerizing novel takes us on a wondrous journey back through the centuries to a civilization half-human, of wholly mysterious origin, at odds with mortality and immortality, justice and guilt. It is an enchanted, hypnotic world that could only come from the imagination of Anne Rice...

This was actually my second time through all three of these. Having just picked up "The Prince Lestat", I realized it has been a very loooong time since I read much of Rice's stuff and I'd forgotten a number of salient points. So I began backtracking. That led me to Vampire Chronicles #7: Merrick. Merrick was a Mayfair. Not from the main branch of the family, but as we learned with Mayfairs, that is seldom reason to assume ANY Mayfair lacks "gifts".

I quickly realized how interconnected all of her Vampire Chronicles and the Mayfair Witches stories are! So back I went to reread all of the Mayfair Witches series.

I'm glad I did. I picked up on much that I'd missed the first time around with both The Witching Hour and Lasher. I'm about halfway through Lasher now. If you haven't read these in the past decade or more, and you liked them the first time around, you might wish to revisit them. As with all gifted authors and great stories, what you take away from a story changes perspective at different points in your life. I'm now in my mid-fifties and I find myself empathizing more, and paying more attention, to the older characters. As a result, I'm taking away an entirely different perspective.

This is every bit as much a grand Southern Gothic novel as much as a Gothic Horror novel. I missed that the first time around when I was in my early 30s. I find myself seeing the broader canvas upon which the actions of the players are painted, not simply zooming ahead with the actions of the key participants.

It's not a set of novels I would have expected to stand the test of time, but they hold up remarkably well. I find myself pleasantly surprised and thrilled to be wrong.

I should include a caveat that I only listened to the abridged audiobook set of these books (not realizing that the only Audible audiobooks for the series were abridged).

That caveat aside, definitely not my thing. I love fantasy and mystery and magic and even the occassional lascivious or libidinous description of a romantic encounter. But this book went too far, got too weird, and was too unsettling - and not in a "wow, I'm really getting lost in this dark and mysterious world and am experiencing disturbing emotions" kind of way (which can actually be the hallmark of really great writing to me) - more of an "ick, what am I reading, and what is going on, and who are all those people, and just ick" kind of way.

Weel, it is abridged and an audiobook. I read The Witching Hour this summer. I enjoyed it. It was far too long for my interests. I needed to know how it all turns out tho, and Tim Currie narrates Taltos. So, I took a chance. It’s not bad at all and I didn’t hate it. I’m glad to know what happens to everyone and don’t feel I need to read all the books in the series now. Love Tim Currie and his narration is the best to me. It was worth the listen for that. I’d even recommend it.

I have not loved and loathed a book in such equal measure since I read morrissey’s autobiography. What a ridiculous, delicious, horny, clever mess.

Mayfair Witch Collection contains Books #1 - 3 in the Mayfair Witches series by Anne Rice.
The Box Set contains:
-The Witching Hour
-Lasher
-Taltos

Interview with the Vampire introduced me to Anne Rice many, many years ago now, and I have been a fan of her work, and vampires, and witches, ever since.
I think I have now read everything she has ever written, some several times over. Every so often I work my way through her books again and as a friend of mine who loves the TV series, but had never read any of Ms. Rice’s work asked me to ‘buddy read’ them with her, so I again took the opportunity to dive in. I love introducing people to her work, especially when they end up loving them as much as I do.
Buddy Reading was a fun way to read this great series, because I had someone to discuss each book with as we finished. We have decided not to stop at just this series, but to read everything she’s written, together.
I can’t believe I had never left a review for any of these books before, but sometimes I get so caught up in reading that I forget that I have yet to post a review. My reading challenge reviews were down about 150 or so last year because I would get so caught up in the books, that I would forget to leave a review, especially when reading a whole series back-to-back. So, this year I am determined to leave a review for every book I read.
I adore Ms. Rice’s work, she writes so passionately and has a rich, vividly descriptive and detailed style that really lends itself to her Gothic fantasies. The stories are woven so well, I am not merely reading them, but experiencing them in exquisite detail. The historical elements that are sprinkled through her books are so cleverly done, and given her own unique twist.
If you have never read any of her work before, I really recommend that you do, as Ms. Rice limitless imagination and spellbinding storytelling abilities ensure a spellbinding read.
Happy Reading...

I have tried to enjoy Anne Rice, but the stories are long and boring. Nowhere on this audiobook did it say abridged. I don’t normally read abridged works. But normally abridge works cut out the unnecessary boring bits. If that is true id’ of never of made it thought the full text. This was drawn out difficult to follow. The history of a family is not interesting. It might be what I would write for myself to as backstory for a character, but never would I publish it. I can’t image what agent read this and said yes this the next great published work. It really is just a snore fest. I only finished it so I could count it towards my reading goal. So many people recommend her for dark tails including her vampire stories but they do nothing for me as a reader. They are slow and lack any action to drive the story forward. They almost read as if following a person on a day to day life and that is boring. Hit the exciting bits and maybe a little less breast milk fetishes.

This book is so pompous it's rediculous. Rice gets in the way of herself all throughout this book. She's so busy weaving this family tree that she bores me. This is the second time I've tried to read this book and just didn't give enough of a damn to trudge through it. Got over half way this time...

I don't think anyone in good conscience can really recommend Anne Rice to someone else....she's someone you have to hunt out and read because you want to.

I first read this in high school.....and remember why I didn't finish Lasher (the 2nd book). This book is twisted. I will say it makes you appreciate the normalcy of your family...

throughly enjoyed these three stories. A wonderful tale of witches and demons. I read the books many years ago and loved them. Much more details are given in the books. However, it was great to revisit these stories.

Watched Mayfair Witches on Netflix, loved it so decided to read the book. The book is different in so many aspects from the TV series but the book is definitely better. Went on to read the follow up 2 books.

THOSE TALTOS BOOKS WERE RLY FUCKED UP.

I READ LIKE TWO OF THEM AND IDREMEMBER ANYTHING PARTICULARLY FUCKED UP HAPPENING.

EVEN WHEN SHE GAVE BIRTH TO A LANKY ADULT BREASTFEEDER WHO TIED HER UP AND RAPED HER REPEATEDLY IN THE HOPE OF HER GIVING BIRTH TO A FEMALE FOR HIM TO FUCK?

IT STARTS OFF ALMOST GOOD (FOR ANNE RICE) THEN VEERS INTO INCEST, PEDOPHILA AND RAMPANT MARY SUES, THEN SHE TIES THE WHOLE THING INTO THE VAMPIRE UNIVERSE. THEN IT BECOMES AN EXTRA SPECIAL KIND OF TERRIBLE.

LOL I FORGOT HOW THOROUGHLY ANNE RICE SCREWED THE POOCH WITH THE MAYFAIR WITCH NOVELS.

I GOT THROUGH THE FIRST ONE MAKING A :/ FACE A LOT OF THE TIME, AND BY THE FIRST CHAPTER OF THE SECOND I WAS AT >:( AND :6 SO MUCH I GAVE UP.

I REMEMBER THE FIRST ONE BEING PRETTY COOL AND CREEPY AND THEN IT JUST GOT RLY BAD AND FULL OF BREASTFEEDING.

Captivating in it's entirety

Never a dull moment, and completely unpredictable. It held my interest to the very end. A little squeamish at times, but once you get past those moments the story comes together. It's not a traditional witch story as I originally had thought it might be. Definitely worth the read.

2/5 overall. i don't recommend it but if you must read from this series then please only read the first

The Witching Hour : 3/5
Lasher : 1/5
Taltos : 2/5

I guess my biggest gripe is that these books are actually not about witches. Yeah sure they are about other occult stuff but it sidelines all of its female characters in favour of the worst character of all time (Lasher) and his weird species (Taltos). Stupid backstories abound and any excitement from the plot is dissipated by these sprawling boring monologues delivered through pages and pages and pages and pages of exposition.

The first book is a relatively solid entry into the southern gothic oeuvre and paints a genuinely interesting portrait of a large southern family that is inexplicably related to the occult.

The second book is the worst book I have ever read tbh. I missed carlotta so much! she was the only one to stand on business.

The third is somehow surprisingly not horrible but crosses over from gothic horror fantasy to science fiction and tbh Taltos' origin gives Scientology.

Finally! Finally done with this series! I bought all 3 of the books together and was really looking forward to reading them. I was a fan of Rice’s vampire series so I figured this wouldn’t disappoint. And I did enjoy the 1st book. Seemed like a good old ghost story, even with all the Mayfair family incest. Good character development with Michael and Rowan and the Mayfair family overall. And I even liked Michael’s character. But then I got to the 2nd book and almost stopped. The whole sex scene between Michael (who I think is around 50ish) and Mona, the 13-year old was just too much. I mean, Rice really could have done something better than child rape thrown in the book. It was really gross. Needless to say, Michael’s character was hard to stomach after that. And then Rowan? Well, I liked her as well at first and then she got really annoying. Like, she loves Michael so much she marries him but then can’t stop having ghost sex with Lasher. And then the breast feeding in both the 2nd and 3rd books! I cant believe I’m even typing these words that’s how friggin’ weird this story is. And she STAYS with Michael even though he fathers a Taltos on a literal child, Mona. Rowan seems to have no issue at all with it and I was mainly pissed at these two the rest of the time I was reading. Oh and killing Aaron? He was the only normal person in this story. So, two stars. And that’s only because the first book was decent.

Noone writes horror and urban fantasy like Anne Rice. Love it or hate it, you will definitely have a reaction to her books that is emotional. From the first time I picked up The Vampire Lestat I was a devoted fan reading all of the Vampire Chronicles and standalones but I avoided The Mayfair Witches, unwilling to commit to another series, until the crossover of Merrick. At that point, I just devoured all three books. From the extreme family disfunction of Witching Hour to the para-abnormal of Lasher and even more-so Taltos, this series sets itself apart from the pack. Rice has a way with language, decorating her world in jarring imagery, pushing the reader out of complacency. There is bizarre romance, magic, and gothic horror told over a history of hundreds of years so these are not short books but the language is so fluid and plot engrossing that they do read quickly (for the size).
In the world of the Mayfair witches, the reader is like the watchers that Rice created, The Talamasca, “We watch. And we are always there.” If you are ready for an unsettling story, then give this series a try.

I'm all over the place emotionally

I bought this set because I had started watching the series on AMC and I hate waiting for the next episode. Now I'm in love with the Mayfair family and all of their drama. I will continue the series on TV since its clear that they were only inspired by the books. They are not following this story the way I had hoped. This story was fantastic and I can see how it would inspire the imagination of movie makers though. It's just not the same story. I love a good a witch story and I love stories that use the house as a character. And this story does exactly that. So may secrets, so many questions and so many elaborate answers. It always amazes me when an author can create an entire world on paper. This book was intricately mapped out, telling a story that started centuries ago and drifting effortlessly between today and all those years ago. This was a story I'll never forget.

Mixed emotions, but mostly positive

As with other Anne Rice books, the story goes deep into your personal ethics and morals. This can be disturbing to some, but the ideas presented are, in my opinion, something we need to be thought over occasionally throughout life. Can different groups of people or species ever live together in harmony? We don't have a very good record of this in history. Is it possible to be around another race, without one truly feeling superior over the other?? And the big question, will we ever be able to become a person with certain gifts,
charm, intelligence, and the ease of personality with others, yet not become arrogant and cruel to all others? Would we ever evolve that we could have a loving kind of people who only want to learn, love, sing, and share their knowledge with us, without feeling threatened or suspicious of them... I just dkngwe

The first book I absolutely loved! The atmosphere, the thrill, the mystery of "the man", ... I was completely hooked.

Then in the 2nd book you were still wondering: who is this man, how did he come about? What's his story? It was ok, but I noticed that I wasn't that hooked to the story anymore. Reading progress slowed, and I found myself eager to finish just so I could start a new book. Not a good sign.

Unfortunately the 3rd book was a disappointment. I'm not even sure if the story needed a 3rd book. It seems like it was written just to tell the story of the Taltos. It didn't have that much to do anymore with witchcraft. Sometimes knowing less is better.

The Witching Hour: loved it, couldn't put it down! It left me wanting more!

Lasher: I enjoyed it until around halfway through it became extremely long winded and was put off by some of the sexual acts. It was difficult for me to finish, and I very near quit multiple times.

Taltos: This one was easier to get through than Lasher, but not nearly as good as The Witching Hour. It follows many characters story line, most I enjoyed but one character's plot line was extremely long winded and I found myself dreading those chapters and skimming over the parts that had a lot of added "fluff" to the story telling.

I don't know that I would consider these books a tale about witches, as much as I would declare them as a tale of all the taboo kinks you could think of - Incest, rape, significant age gaps, daddy doms, teen brides, necrophilia and autonepiophilia.

The writing style is also ridiculous. Telling the same story but through several perspectives is fluff. These 3 books could have been completed in under 500 pages. Lasher and Taltos both had their stories told in the last 150 pages. What's the point in the entire book otherwise? All fluff. A complete waste of my time.

Zero character development. Zero comprehensive storyline. For being such a popular author, I'm very disappointed.

It’s a shame that I spent so much time in this series. By the second book, I finally skipped chapters and by the third book I only read the last chapter. I was looking forward to reading an Anne Rice series about witches; I loved Interview w a Vampire and LeStadt. This series was only mildly interesting in parts and really a turnoff in the numerous sex scenes. What is the hang up on sucking breasts? The whole series was pretty awful. The current TV series seems better and veers way off the books thankfully. Such a disappointment to what could have been great.

This is the first in three books about the Mayfair Witches.

It started with the burning of the first Mayfair witch in Scottland and is currently up to the 13th witch,
Rowan. Interesting following the history of the women. They all lived in the Garden District of New Orleans. The first died in Scottland; her daughter fled to the Carribean, then she fled to the river country of Louisiana; then when the river flooded the plantation, she moved to New Orleans, building a large plantation type house there.

I couldn't even read through the first book! The author is a wonderful writer and definitely sets the stage and tone for the book. She is super descriptive! However, it seemed to take forever to get to the point. I will openly admit that I cheated and read the plots all 3 books. There is never an ending! You must continue to read her other book series to find the answers you're seeking. I cannot do that! There has to be an ending in sight!

She brought the heavy New Orleans air, smelling of bougainvilleas into my living room, and the magical ecstasy of unhinged lovers, hungry for affection and blood.

I'll always be enamored with these novels, and sometimes on hot, sultry days, when I can smell the water in the air, waiting for a rainstorm, I rub my skin and hair with perfumes of exotic flowers, and reread one of her Mayfair Witches books.
