What the Bible Can Teach You About Yourself presents a unique look at a familiar cast of biblical characters through the eyes of a psychologist. While weaving in her personal story of healing, Schaffner uses her professional background to expertly highlight themes of seeking simplicity, finding purpose, and navigating painful and emotional experiences. Comprised of compelling, relatable stories, Revealed makes the Bible come alive to readers in a personal and meaningful way. Through an in-depth look at the hearts of well-known biblical characters, Schaffner explores ways readers can relate to these cherished stories in their own spiritual lives, acknowledging that everyone shares the common experiences of being pulled toward external measures such as wealth, achievement, and affirmation from others. The author challenges readers to face the reality of their hearts and begin an inward journey of renewal, listening for God’s voice in unlikely places—and through unlikely people. Readers will see themselves more clearly through the lens of scripture and ultimately experience deeper self-awareness and spiritual growth.
Revealed immediately grabbed my heart; and I remained deeply engaged throughout the entire book. I believe we can all see ourselves in these chapters, whether we are young or more mature, and will all be challenged to let the Scriptures guide us onto a path of healing in the areas where we struggle. Although Angela brilliantly brings her expertise as a therapist to bear on each chapter, I was pleasantly surprised that she continually points us to the Truth revealed in the Word about our human nature, and to the love and grace of the God who created us. The layout of the book makes it a great personal study, as well as a valuable resource for group study. We all struggle; and the practical questions in Revealed give us the opportunity to be authentic, to admit the areas where we wrestle, while group study provides an avenue to encourage, challenge, and walk with one another along the path, while inviting God to bring healing to our deepest needs. - Linda D. This is a six week study guide that invites you to read the Bible and discover how it applies to you and your life right now. There are five days where you read a few pages of content and then read a section of scripture and answer three questions to help apply what you've read to yourself. There's a weekend activity at the end of each section that invites you to go a little deeper into the week's subjects.
I really appreciated the invitation to find myself in the Scripture and consider its current application to my life. I enjoyed learning about and trying lectio divina. I hope to continue to apply what I've learned to reading and studying the Bible.
Most Bible studies aproach God’s Word either from a historical perspective or from a life application perspective. Both of those types of study are important and necessary, but sometimes Scripture begs us to view it through the lenses of our own humanity. Dr. Angela Schaffner’s book helps the reader to see themselves through the lenses of scripture in a new, fresh and relevant way. Except to reflect on very common Biblical stories in a new light. I highly recommend this study!
I bought this and read one chapter a day during Lent. I underlined, I journaled, I dig into my Bible more. I can’t say enough good things about this book. I looked forward to reading it everyday and learned a lot about the Bible and most days hit close to home for me. I even bought a copy for a friend and I’m going to read it again with her and meet for coffee to discuss.
I've read a lot of Bible studies in the past 20+ years and this is the best Bible study I have read in a long, long time! This is a great book for either an individual or small group that offers new, insightful perspectives on the Bible. If you take the time to read this book you will see both the Bible and yourself in a new light thanks to Angela’s unique perspectives as a psychologist.
Most of my reading on things spiritual, has been restricted to male authors, as men's ministry has been my area of work for many years. There have been some notable exceptions. I found this book helpful and challenging, filled with models of discussion that work well for both men and women. It uses a set of questions when considering scripture that framed my attention in a unique and helpful way. It also deals with play and flow which I found very helpful.
