Imagine a stable full of dragons to groom, train and ride! That’s Dragonsdale, a riding school run by Cara’s father.
The Midwinter festivities are in full swing at Dragonsdale, and the riders and their dragons are looking forward to Yuletide. But trouble is brewing! A newcomer arrives at the stables, a snowstorm brings peril and Hortense is determined to ruin the holidays for Cara and her friends.
When it comes to dragons, SALAMANDA DRAKE knows her Goldenbrows from her Finbacks.
She is sixteen years old and lives with her father, a dragon rider in the Isles of Bresal. Her love of dragons began at the age of three, when her "Da" began taking her to fairs and showings around the islands. Discovering she had a special way with even the most unruly of creatures, she soon learnt that (in her own words) 'The only way to train a dragon is to be patient and never give up.'
She spends much of her free time (sometimes when she should be at school) sweeping, grooming, and exercising her father's dragons. Salamanda has a Trustbond with Hillsweeper, a Firecrest dragon, and together they are now competing at Showings. They have high hopes of representing Finnglass at the Island Championships.
A fun and engaging story. I wanted something to read for Christmas and remembered I had this on my shelf. I was brought back into the world of Dragonsdale pretty quickly and was mostly kept engaged. It has the staples of your traditional Middle Grade girl and her horse book but with dragons. Toward the end, it was feeling like it was dragging a bit and that parts toward the beginning and middle could have been cut to save time but all parts of the story were brought together again which I did appreciate.
In the third book of the Dragonsdale series, we return to the characters we love preparing for Yuletide festivities. But, of course, there is always plenty of mischief and adventure to be found with our beloved crew. Drane has continued his path working to heal dragons, and is vying to become apprentice to the Dragonleech, but a new character who is also vying for this spot causes plenty of problems, including putting little Wony and Bumble in harm's way. T continues to cause issues for the stables during the season, eventually risking the lives of riders and dragons. Unfortunately, this one is my least favorite of the series, but nonetheless, the comfort and familiarity of Bresal still makes this one an enjoyable read. The events in this book blended together and because of how repetitive the events were, I found myself getting confused about if they were racing or just training, and was this the big race for the Yearturn?
