Help a family member or save a stranger?

In Whispering Pines, Halloween horrors involve more than goblins and ghouls.

With only a smattering of tourists visiting the village for the Samhain feast, Jayne is excited … no. She's looking forward to … no. Jayne is guardedly optimistic about spending a few days with her demanding sister. Then a boy goes missing during trick-or-treating and everything changes.

The parents aren’t worried. Their son does this, they say. With a storm bearing down on the village, though, Jayne isn’t content to dismiss this as a case of a curious kid off exploring the woods. Organizing a search-and-rescue mission gives her plenty to deal with but then the word "kidnapped" is mentioned and brings her sister’s long-buried nightmare into the light, forcing Jayne to divide her attention at the worst possible time.

Mystery and fantasy author Shawn McGuire loves creating characters and places her fans want to return to again and again. She started writing after seeing the first Star Wars movie (that's episode IV) as a kid. She couldn't wait for the next installment to come out so wrote her own. Sadly, those notebooks are long lost, but her desire to tell a tale is as strong now as it was then. It's Halloween in Whispering Pines, and Jayne has her hands full. Being the Sheriff is enough of a job, but she's also involved in the villagers' Samhain celebration.

She and her boyfriend, Tripp, have a full house at their B & B, and Jayne's sister has chosen this time for a visit. It's no secret that their relationship has been a bit strained, but maybe now they can put the past behind them.

But then there's another problem ... a young boy has gone missing. The parents don't seem worried as he loves to explore and there's lots of woods around the area. But the dad has second thoughts as he sets out to find his son .... only Dad is now missing, too.

There are so many story lines going on at the same time and the author did an outstanding job in tying them all together in such an entertaining and suspenseful way. I love the characters of Jayne and Tripp and how they relate to each other. All the village residents are unique in their own way... makes me wish Whispering Falls was a real place.

Although this is 6th in the series, it is easily read as a stand alone. I do recommend starting at the beginning ... it's a fascinating series with a touch of paranormal thrown in.

Many thanks to the author for the advanced digital copy of this mystery. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

Each book in this series is better than the last. I enjoy the development of the characters and relationships as secrets are discovered and revealed. Again, we have an interesting mystery full of sub-plots and intriguing relationships. Jayne's sister comes to visit and a child disappears. It is Samhain and town festivities bring out both the fun and the strangeness of this holiday. Trust and guilt both have strong roles in the story. Intrigue and suspense continue to flow through the stories of the people that live in Whispering Pines. As always, waiting for the next book tries my patience. :-)

Whispering Pines series:
Veiled Secrets #6 - I'm absolutely addicted to this series. Ms. McGuire is on my top ten list of favorite authors. This is another great addition. The story begins a month after Rival Secrets ended. There are a lot of surprises, good and bad, for everyone in Whispering Pines. Law enforcement will definitely feel the brunt of the happenings.

There are two good endings or beginnings at the end of the book. The storylines were very intriguing, suspense filled and mesmerizing making it hard to put the book down until the end. The author's vivid descriptions of the Samhain event was pretty well done; I almost wanted to be there, but it's too far North for me. The characters keep evolving with each book and Flavia is going to go nuclear soon by the way she's acting, but that's another story. I contacted the author to review her books. 5*

Family Secrets, Whispering Pines #1 - An intriguing story. After finishing Stick and Stones, I dove into Family Secrets, my second book by this new-to-me author. These two books are nothing alike on storylines, except fantasy. I was drawn into this well written novel with an interesting plot and realistic characters, including the lovable dog. I couldn't put Family Secrets down until it was finished. There's an overview letting the reader know what the book is about, which I appreciate. This author is definitely someone whose work I want to keep reading. Two books, two winners!

Kept Secrets, Whispering Pines #2 - Another intriguing story by a very good author. Now we're being to know our main characters as they grow in this book, while remaining believable and realistic. The well written, fast paced plot keeps the reader interested, making it hard to put the book down. The author’s descriptions leave the reader with clear pictures about the town, townspeople and property. I contacted the author to review her books since she writes such substantial stories that leaves a reader satisfied.

Original Secrets, Whispering Pines #3 – This is the best of the series. So intriguing that the reader can’t put the book down. A well written, suspense filled book with two deaths forty years apart that may be connected. The characters are steadily growing, even the hated ones are interesting. Their dialog is realistic and non of The Stupid Formula for these characters. Her descriptions are clear and you’re there in Whispering Pines. I’m looking forward to the next book. I contacted the author to review her books; her stories are substantial and the reader is satisfied when finished reading one of her books.

Hidden Secrets, Whispering Pines #4 - Another hard to put down story. Well written, suspense filled and full of intrigue, still with an interesting group of characters with new ones added to boot. This substantial story has several stories going at once, including the past and the future and the worries that stem from them. I've never been disappointed by any book written by Ms. McGuire and I look forward to more of her work. I contacted the author to review her books.

Rival Secrets #5 - Another substantial and interesting read. Rival picks up a month after Hidden Secrets (#4) ends. The well thought out story lines keep the reader immersed until the last page. Every book in this series has been great and this one is no different. The regular characters keep showing more of their secrets and growth, and the reader pulls for them. Their dialog is interesting without any stupidity, just realistic and clean. There's touches of sexual tension and hints of mysteries to come. The murder was well handled and while there were plenty of suspects, the path to solving the crime was interesting. As usual, there were kinks along the path, but that's what keeps the reader involved with the story. This is a must read series, which should be read in order to find out all the secrets and learn the village and its folk. I contacted the author to review her books. 5*

Missing & Gone - An interesting novella. This well written story introduces the main and some of the secondary characters of the book Family Secrets. It's a quickly read suspense story, which I read after Family Secrets; I didn't miss not having read M&G before FS. A conflict: Jayne knows her grandmother is a Wiccan, but she forgot it in FS? Minor detail, both are must reads, actually any of the author's books are must reads.

It is Samhain in Whispering Pines, a place where people who don’t normally fit in can make their home. Tripp and Jayne have a houseful at Pine Time Bed and Breakfast and Jayne’s sister is coming for a visit. There is sure to be a murder mystery to solve too.

Another fascinating story about that very unique place, Whispering Pines. Once again, a look at various family dynamics as well as what makes a community work. The layers of this community and that of the MC’s own family’s past continue to be peeled back, even as more layers are added in present time. Can’t wait to see what happens next as the saga continues to unfold.

*I received a free ARC of this book with thanks to the author. The decision to review and my opinions are my own.*

I can honestly say this series is getting better and better. The books do stand alone to a certain extent, but you get more of a feel for Whispering Pines and its unique residents by reading them in order, and Jayne develops as her story progresses.

While the first few books delved into Jayne’s family history and the buried secrets of Whispering Pines, the more recent few have focused more on the residents and Pine Time’s guests in individual mysteries and I feel the setup lends itself really well to these kind of stories.

Veiled Secrets is no exception to this general rule. A child goes missing, one of Jayne and Tripp’s outcomer guests; the locals are issuing some strange warnings about princesses and fairies; and Jayne’s other guests are a creepily suspicious bunch. To top it all off, Jayne has to face some family issues as her estranged sister comes to stay and things get personal.

I was a bit concerned that Rosalyn was the stereotypical ‘spoilt brat’ younger sister to start with, as she flounces around demanding attention and her own way, but Shawn McGuire carefully avoids this snare, showing a genuine connection between the sisters which has been hampered by misunderstandings and miscommunication. It doesn’t take too long for Rosalyn to show hidden depths and for the reader to realise that Jayne is not some innocent victim in their estrangement.

The one thing I missed this time round was more involvement from Whispering Pines kooky residents. They make cameo appearances, but for the most part the victim/suspect pool is focused around the outsiders to the community. I can see why this is necessary though, as if Jayne drags in the locals in every case she’ll soon be run out of town! I think the author has got the balance just right of new and familiar faces, police procedures and woo-woo warnings, to keep the reader entertained and interested.

Personally I am also thankful that Jayne and Tripp continue to develop and move without lots of silly misunderstandings getting in their way. It’s really refreshing to see a mystery investigator who has their home life (mostly) together and is free to focus on issues other than their own romantic life.

This is another great read for established fans, and a nice introduction to Whispering Pines for newcomers who like a solid cosy mystery with just traces and hints of the paranormal.

I had just stepped into the bathroom to check for anything that needed picking up and was sure I heard Arden say, “Beware the princess.” I stepped round the corner into the living room and asked, “What princess?”
Arden was standing there, as though frozen, with a dust rag in her hands, then blinked. “What?”
“What did you say about a princess?”
She gave me a concerned look and slowly said, “I didn’t say anything about a princess, sweetness.”

I really enjoyed this book and definitely did not see the end coming. Talk about a twist in the series. I have listened to book five and now book six and think it is a series that I will have to get the rest of the books, the books are stand alone but I have enjoyed them so much that I will have to start at the beginning. The characters are likable and I like the small town community that is describe so well that you have no problem picturing. The mystery is good with a number of suspects that kept me guessing and hooked until the end.
Jayne with the tourist season slowing down she is looking forward to spending more time to reconnect with her sister but before that can happen a young boy staying at the bed and breakfast goes missing. His parent's are convinced that he is fine and as a wilderness expect refuse to set off an alarm. It is only after a number of hours and the threat of a storm that they allow Jayne to set up a search and rescue team. The father refuses Jayne's advice and goes it alone and it is not long before he misses a check in and the rest of the town start looking for two missing people. The storm isn't the only threat in Whispering Pines, bad fairies are running around the village, not to mention the scarecrow that is wearing the missing boys t-shirt. Jayne knows it is a bad case for her to be investigating especially with her sister visiting but Jayne has no choice lives are at stake and she can't make time for her until the missing is found. Then a body is found and things get a lot worse. Can Jayne find the missing , time for her sister and other guest's at the B&B?
I like Sandra Murphy as the narrator and think she goes along to making this great series even better. I would recommend this book and any book read by Sandra Murphy because if Sandra is reading it you know it is going to be good.

Again, Shawn McGuire does not dissapoint!
This series is well written and a page-turning delight to read.  Ms. McGuire creates a fantastic plot line and many quirky characters that you'd really like to meet, except for maybe a couple of them.

Whispering Pines is an intriguing small village surrounded by a small forest of whispering pines.  The village is filled with wiccans, carney people and of course tourists with a little murder thrown in.

The two inns are filled to the rafters with tourists to celebrate Halloween or Samhain, the Wiccan New Year, and everyone is having a good time, dressed in costumes, enjoying all the events and just plain having fun, that is - until a young boy disappears and then the next day his father disappears and the mother/wife doesn't seem too concerned.  Just to add a little drama, the first winter storm is coming and those woods are easy to get lost in.  Can Jayne and her friends find them in time?

This story had me in the first chapter and kept me going to the end. The most disappointing part of the story was that it ended too soon.  For a book that does that for you, how could it get less than five-stars?

Veiled Secrets is the sixth book in the Whispering Pines Mystery Series by Shawn McGuire. This is a perfect blend of cozy mystery, small-town charm, and just the right sprinkle of supernatural elements.
following Jane O’Shea who has a knack for solving mysteries that seem to find her no matter how much she tries to avoid them. The town itself is a character in its own right – a little quirky, idyllic, and full of secrets. The locals are a fun mix of personalities, from the nosy neighbours to more endearing eccentrics - and their interactions gives the series an extra element of interest along with some ‘warm-fuzzies’.
Ms. McGuire manages to balance lighthearted coziness with genuinely intriguing mysteries. Each book has its own unique twist, and while the stakes aren’t overly high/intense, they’re enough to keep you flipping pages late into the night. Plus, the touch of the paranormal adds an extra layer of fun without overwhelming the story.
Recommend for a binge-worthy read.
Happy Reading…

Interesting mystery

I enjoyed this book and its themes of families and secrets. The mystery was intriguing with frustrating clues.

This was a tough one for Jayne as her sister who she is not on good terms with comes to visit and then Jayne gets a missing child case which takes time away from her sister. The split focus makes for an interesting glitch.

As usual Tripp is wonderful and so many of the secondary characters play important roles in advancing the storyline. There are some good red herrings. The twists and turns shake things up but there were some pretty obvious clues Jayne overlooked. As usual Jayne takes things personally and feels guilt that is not hers.

The resolution is heartwrenching but the ending scene between Jayne and Tripp is sweet.

Looking forward to the next book.

Wow! That was unexpected! I am soooo surprised at the "who" in the who done it!! I won't give it away but, damn I'm shocked at who it was! I guess we didn't know that person like we thought.
I am really happy about Jayne's time with her sister Roz! It was so wonderful they were able to resolve some old heartaches and get their relationship back on track. This was a great addition to the Whispering Pines series. I loved the beautiful outdoor feast they had for the village on Halloween. I think Shawn did a fabulous job setting the scene and making it magical to imagine being there! If only it was a real tourist town for us to visit, it would be on my favorite list.
*I received a copy of this magnificent book for review, it is a MUST read! Just like all the other books in the series.

I received a free copy of this very enjoyable book. As always there is a mystery to solve, but the best part of book is the relationships. Seeing how the main character’s relationships are evolving and how they impact the story is very interesting. It was also interesting to meet Jayne’s sister, and see how she fit into Jayne’s life. The mystery was different this time, and there was definitely a surprising twist that I didn’t expect which was fun. It is hard to review this book without revealing any spoilers, but it was full of things that will make previous readers happy. I would definitely recommend this book, but I suggest reading the previous books first to get the most out of this one. Looking forward to the next installment.

There are tourists in town as it is Halloween, which is the Wiccan New Year. The B&B is all booked up.
A boy disappears and the parents aren't worried. They think he is off in the woods exploring. The next day the father goes looking for his son and he doesn't come back. What is going on? Jayne's sister has picked this time to come and visit. Rosalyn is demanding and the two have been estranged.
This book has drama, mystery, tragedy, suspense, surprises. Wonderful quirky characters, well thought out plot, very well written. Will keep you interested and reading right to the end.
I voluntarily received a copy of this book from the author and I'm voluntarily posting a review. My opinion is entirely my own.

Veiled Secrets by Shawn McGuire pulled me in immediately. I really like the character of Sheriff Jayne O'Shay, her boyfriend Tripp, and Westie Meeka. The village of Whispering Pines is full of vibrant imagery and unique characters. I can picture so many details in my mind. The Pine Time Bed and Breakfast sounds like the ideal place to visit. This book is both a standalone listen and part of a series. Sandra Murphy is magical bringing the characters to life with her voice. She inflects the right emotions and gives the characters distinguishable voices. Her ability to span a variety of ages, dialects and genders is incredible. Without giving away spoilers, I hadn't expected the kidnapper to be who it was. Well done. I loved it!

Samhain, when the veil is the thinnest, and the residents of Whispering Pines are prepping for a two day celebration. Jayne is worried about her sister, Rosalyn's visit; they have been estranged for a long while. Jayne would like to reconcile, but is also worried that Rosalyn will give a bad report about the B&B, and destroys Jayne and Tripp's dream business.

Then a little boy goes missing, and search parties can't find him anywhere. The boy's father suddenly disappears as well; did he kidnap his own son?

Reconciliations, the death of the old year and birth of the new year (Pagans understand this concept), missing child and father, and dark fairies creating havoc. Can Jayne get through all this, and stay sane?

I received an ARC of this book from the author with no strings attached. Here are my thoughts:
Life in Whispering Pines is complicated but serene. How can that be? This series has been so FUN! Shawn McGuire has a way of writing that just sucks me in. With this one, I actually got irritated that I had to stop to even get a drink or run to the bathroom! Absorbing, wonderful characters, beautiful setting, a Westie, Meeka, who, IMHO, steals the spotlight. Yes, some things come to an end, some things heat up, some things begin, but some things are healed. Loved this passage: “Sometimes, the only do over we get is to never make the same mistake again.”

‘Veiled Secrets’ is a delightful, poignant goodread. How can it be both?
The setting is Whispering Pines, a magical place of quirky characters with witchy ways, just delightful! The plot is a kidnapping, literally, that leads to a father’s death, most tragic. Author, Shawn McGuire ties the two seamlessly and creates an excellent goodread. This book, 6th in the series,
is charged with emotional reading involving siblings, Sheriff Jayne’s sister visits, and siblings started the events that led to a death. I hope this spikes your interest, it’s the best delightful, poignant reading. The whole series is a must read, it’s captivating!

Jayne is guardedly optimistic about spending a few days with her demanding sister. Then a boy goes missing during trick-or-treating and everything changes. The boy's parents' are not worried. "He has done this kind of thing before." But when the word kidnapped comes out, then Jayne's sister's worse nightmare come roaring to the front. Now Jayne has to divide her attention to helping her sister and trying to find the missing boy. This is book six of a series. I enjoyed every one of them so far. This book did not disappoint! This author really knows her stuff and how to create such a great story. I just curl up and crawl inside these stories. My suspicions about Morgan were completely on track! This story turned out to be really sad when it comes to father and son. I think the author handled the subject with great aplomb. I also love how Jayne and Roslyn reconnected with Jayne working on this case because it helped to solidify their relationship. The characters are well developed and dialogue between them is great. I received an ARC at no cost from the author.

I read all 7 of the books in the Whispering Pines series. What a great way to spend your time reading a cozy murder mystery! Each book is somewhat stand alone but if you start with book 1 you get each character as they enter the “scene” and the backstory of why our interesting detective is there in the first place. The books are filled with mysterious and quirky characters. From the village residents to visiting tourists, there is always something happening and probably dying to be found! I cannot wait until a new book comes out!

I picked up this book from Kindel as it sounded like something I would like. I am on book number seven of a series of 9 books. This series has me completely hooked. The sheriff, the villagers all make this series immensely readable. Each book has it's own theme and could be read as a stand-alone. I am not looking forward to the end of book 9. Guess I will have to move from the village of Whispering Pines. Please try reading book 1, then tell me when you have finished book 9. I don't think anyone could just read the first book and then go no further.

Jayne and Tripp and the gang of Whispering Pines are like family. All of the residents of Whispering Pines are wonderful; well except for Flavia. As well as the killer of course. Will Jayne enjoy her sister’s visit? Will Halloween be a pleasant and fun filled night?
This is a fantastic series, the characters are great and the town makes you feel at home. You will totally enjoy this series and this book.

Jayne's sister, Rosalyn, comes to visit to try to reconnect with each other. A family of four with children a boy and a girl. The boy is tired of having to watch his younger sister and runs away. His father taught him how to survive in the wild. His father goes looking for his son. When neither return, a rescue party is organized. A surprising ending to the search.
This is a very good series in Whispering Pines.

Once again tragedy befalls Whispering Pines but the guilty person is not an 'outsider' this time, rather someone that the villagers had come to know and trust. It was wonderful watching Jayne and Roslyn revive the friendship they felt for each other growing up. Finally Jayne and Tripp are taking their relationship up a notch and Morgan has some exciting news as well. Happy reading. Annemarie

Outstanding series!

This is the 6th entry into the Whispering Pines series, not including the prequel. Each book has built upon the last one. Shawn McGuire is a master at plotting her stories. Out of the 6 full length mysteries, I am 0 - 6 in trying to figure out who did what when. You have to pay attention because McGuire will throw you a curve when you are least expecting it! Keep up the good work!! I can hardly wait for the next one!!

Excellent series!

Please read in order or you will miss all the development of Jayne's move into her Grandmother's home and decision to remain in Whispering Pines. Each mystery is unique and the solving of the murder introduces many of the unique people who live here. There is a continuing story line be books as we follow Jayne's adventures and assimilation into the town activities. Excelk
