Wallace the Brave Collections #2

Snug Harbor Stories: A Wallace the Brave Collection!

Rate this book
The follow up to the Eisner-nominated collection of Wallace the Brave comics, featuring beautifully illustrated scenes of childhood imagination, friendship, outdoor exploration, and adventure.

Think "Peanuts" if Charlie Brown were less of a mope or "Calvin & Hobbes" if Calvin weren't a bit of a psychopath. "Wallace The Brave" is about a family. There's Dad, a fisherman, Mom, a gardener, their almost feral young son Sterling, who never met a bug he wouldn't eat, and his older brother Wallace, a rambunctious, imaginative kid big on exploring. Mostly we see the world of the strip through Wallace's eyes, a sleepy East Coast beach town called Snug Harbor where the streets are lined with ice cream shops and the beaches are dotted with rocky tide pools ... The world of childhood depicted in the strip is a timeless, outdoorsy one reminiscent of strips like "Calvin & Hobbes" and "Cul De Sac," both of which Henry cites as influences. — NPR's Glen Weldon

Another delightful go-round with Wallace and his wacky family and friends.

I love how this one completely sums up the perfect childhood summer:

I can't get enough of Wallace and his friends! Once again, I wish I could give this comic 10 stars!

Wallace, Amelia, and Spud are off on another set of minor adventures in the woods and creeks around Snug Harbor. They spend their days hunting the Sasquatch, tracking a prehistoric turtle named Gramps, playing basketball, making blanket forts, eating pancakes in the shape of a top hat, and ducking out of their schoolwork.

I love how imaginative Wallace is! He can take the smallest bit of nothing and turn it into a wild adventure, dragging his friends along with him.

Once again, one of the best things about Wallace's world is his quirky family. I love how weird and funny they all are: the fisherman dad, the artistic mom, and the baby brother who eats bugs. They join in Wallace's imaginative world, letting him express himself by wearing weird hats, sticking his head inside a pumpkin, or playing at the Wild West with salt and pepper shakers. Whether it's building a clubhouse, setting up a tire swing, flying a kite, or just sitting quietly to watch a spider spinning its web, Wallace's parents are ready to celebrate childhood right along with him.

I enjoyed the playful art style, and the thoroughly entertaining jokes in this adorable comic!

Funny little cartoons. A bit too light for my own entertainment, but the kind of simple thing that I would have enjoy, like I enjoy the Calvin & Hobbes so much (not saying this one is has good at those). A good entertainment!

Wallace is a kid who wants to live life to the fullest, and lets his imagine run rampant. His best friend Spud would like to take the safe and easy route. Their friend Amelia is scary smart, but sometimes hangs around them for entertainment. Together they have adventures both painfully ordinary (but still funny) and wildly imaginative (but still plausible).

Oh my goodness, this had me laughing SO hard at times. Do not read this book in public or anywhere you need to stay quiet. I don’t remember laughing quite this hard when I read Wallace the Brave. Clearly, he’s gotten more clever with time. The best thing is that I can totally see a real group of kids in a coastal New England town saying or doing or imagining all of these things. Henry has found the magical humor of normal kid life and thinking. Highly recommended to anyone from 8 to 108 who is looking for a clean comic and a good laugh. I'm going to have to order multiple copies for our libraries.

I received an ARC of this title from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Not my favorite of the series (but still really, really good). Bonus points for Wallace asking Santa for my favorite pinball machine, Funhouse.

I also appreciated searching for the giant turtle at Trustom Pond. Unrelated side note, my husband and I were lucky enough to be walking at Trustom on a day the resident snapping turtles not only decided to both make an appearance, but also to start mating 10 feet away. It was...an experience.

I read and enjoyed another book by the author: Wallace the Brave and looked forward to getting into this one.

The first few panels were nothing special and I have to admit that I was a little disappointed but then the story picks up pace. There is not much of a linear progression in terms of the story and for the most part, you can pick up anywhere by picking a random page but a few have a continuing storyline.

The cast is the same, but a little older and there seems to be a stray seagull that behaves like its part of their gang in a lot of panels (watch out for it!). Wallace is our central character, his brother Sterling is a little older and in the age of eating anything he can get his hands on. His father and mother seem less tired than the last time I met them and they are a very lovable set of people. Spud(friend and sidekick) is more obsessed with food and less neurotic than I remember. Amelia is part of their trio as they go on adventures both purposeless and purposeful (like to hunt a sasquatch).

It is a fun set of panels, age is no consequence to enjoy this lot. I highly recommend it to those who like comic strips in general.

I received an ARC thanks to NetGalley and the publishers but the review is completely based on my own reading experience.

This was an absolutely delightful series of comics. The humor is something both children and their parents can appreciate and I am not at all embarrassed to admit that there were a few that had be laughing out loud. I was a big fan of Calvin & Hobbes growing up and I agree that what Will Henry has created with the Snug Harbor stories brings the same humor, childish imagination, and camaraderie that made me love Calvin & Hobbes so much. I will definitely be going back to read Wallace the Brave.

I highly recommend this book to teachers, librarians, and parents. I am a big supporter of the use of comics in the classroom and I think young readers would love to see what is going on with Wallace and his friends.

Another clever, inventive story from Will Henry. This is a book I would gladly have shared in my middle school classroom, but would recommend it for readers even younger (not to mention adult readers).

Will Henry’s work is fun, attractive, and well done.

4 stars.

This is my second book by Will Henry and I found it to be just as funny as the first one. There are so many pages in this book that make you laugh out loud. It's such an entertaining read.

Seen through the eyes of a child and his childhood, we get to experience the hilarious moments of being able to see the world from a little boys point of view. We meet his friends and family and we are reminded of all the moments where we wish we were kids again, when life was really just this simple and fun.

I would highly recommend this if you are wanting a book that is light and simple yet very funny.

I can not wait for the next one in this series. Such a highly pleasing read that is not only for children and teens, but adults aswell.

I agree with others that this could slide neatly beside slice-of-life kid comics like Calvin & Hobbes, Peanuts, and Big Nate, but it has a charm all its own. Unlike the Peanuts gang who, if I'm being honest, comes off a bit mean in present day, I really enjoy the main trio at the heart of this: Wallace, curious, adventurous, and up for anything; Amelia, the natural leader who will suffer no fools; and Spud, the kid with a bottomless appetite who's a bit anxious, but loyal to a fault. It maybe doesn't get quite as existential as Calvin, or as slapstick as Big Nate but seems to find a very comfortable and cozy middle ground. The details of the Snug Harbor setting add a nice sense of place.

A particular 9 year-old near and dear to my heart was freely chuckling to himself throughout this and the first book while he was reading, so I have to think that's a pretty good stamp of approval too.

'Snug Harbor Stories: A Wallace the Brave Collection!' by Will Henry is the second collection of strips in this series, and I loved it just as much as the first.

Wallace and his friends live a kind of idyllic childhood that I really hope is still a reality for children. They are free to roam and imagine. Wallace has parents that parent, but you can see where Wallace gets his whimsy and wonder. Wallace's friends are odd without excuse. They are friends because they are.

Wallace the Brave is fast becoming a favorite. I love the nostalgic feeling I get of the kind of antics I remember from childhood. I like the non-cynical approach to the children in these strips. I also think many are quite funny.

Set in a New England-y seaside town, these warm funny comic stories feature Wallace and his friends Spud and Amelia. The stories invoke the joys of the outdoors and universal childhood experiences with gentle humor and just a hint of psychopath. Video gaming, Sasquatch, battles with nature, and a legendary prehistoric snapping turtle are welcome subjects for a kid looking for a laugh after a long day at school. Henry really gets what it’s like to be a kid, and I get the feeling that Wallace’s dad may have a little bit of the author in him, living with “his wife, his cat, and his mistress, the sea.” The art, which looks to be hand inked and colored, reminds me of Calvin and Hobbes. It depicts the kids as ultra short, with funny details, such as Wallace’s little brother’s uni-brow and Spud’s square head.

This collection of comic strips may remind some readers of their own childhood or make them wish they had experienced one such as this one. In the book, readers meet Wallace, his mother, and fisherman father, his brother Sterling who loves to eat bugs, and Wallace's friends Spud and Amelia. Two of my favorite strips involved Wallace's romantic conception of his father's job when the reality is something quite different and his family's trip to the ice cream shop where the poor clerk doesn't know what to make of the flavor choices since Sterling wants grasshoppers, real grasshoppers, and his father just wants boring old vanilla. If you're looking for good laughs but a strip that makes you think, this collection should fit the bill.

MY THOUGHTS:

I received this book in exchange for my honest review.

OMG! I love this series. Wallace is such a dorky kid that you can't help but love and his interactions with his parents, especially his dad... and his friends, teachers, people he runs into... I always smile when I read about his antics.

Will Henry is a very talented man. Love his work and those that he claims to influence his work too. Wallace is a typical kid with a snarky attitude and funny way of twisting even the simplest thing into a huge drama.

If you love the Peanuts and Big Nate, you'll love Wallace the Brave collection. I recommend you pick up one of the books from the Wallace collection and give it a try!

I liked so much this graphic novel! Wallace, Amelia and Spud are amazing (like their friendship). I loved Amelia! She's the kind of girl I’ve always dreamed of being (like a bada**).

I loved the humour and the slice of life's scene. The kids' fantasy - like ufo, monsters, all that kind of imagination - give me good feelings and made me smile.
Everyday is a new adventure and nothing (almost) can bore them.

Even the "adults" in this comic are amazing. They are weird and funny. Mom is my favorite.

I like the style, the draw is simple but effective.

I bought this when I bought the first book in the collection. I just wrote a review on it, so I don't have much new to add.

I did want to say that if there is a word to describe a person with a deep, childlike love of nature, family and friends then that word would be applied to Wallace.

Often comics that center on children always show their mischievous, impish nature. That is not Wallace. He is sincere and genuine in all he does. He lives life with an eager joyfulness that made me want to romp and play with the grandkids.

Thanks Will, for a beautiful book. When does the next one come out?

This collection of comics was great! The drawings take you to an amazing place filled with children’s imagination and logic all at the same time encourage adventure and the simplicity of an earlier time. This book should be in everyone’s home to share with young and old. The more I scan through the pages the more detail I find and the more I find myself chuckling. This is a must snag for anyone with a love for comic stripes or who just love great art and great stories. Looking forward to the next book!

This was my first encounter with Will Henry's comic strip. I found myself enjoying many of the individual strips, but for me, there were some clunkers as well, daily strips where I just didn't get the humor. On the other hand, by the end of the book, the characters were beginning to grow on me a bit.
The influences from strips like Cul de Sac were clear, but in this volume I didn't get a good sense of why these three kids were even friends. Still, there was enough good stuff in this collection that I hope to see more.

The rambling adventures of Wallace and friends, through life, a pond with a giant turtle and their little hometown.

I would call this a "cozy comics collection". Occasionally laugh out loud funny, generally mildly humorous, but with some sweet moments of enjoying life (with only a little sarcasm). Also I feel like Wallace's little brother is actually related to Gir from Invader Zim.

No content issues; mild peril from a giant snapping turtle and smack-talking the wrong girl, but everyone lives (with all their limbs still attached!) at the end.

I found a copy at a local library so I could take a peek! These little tales are great! They read like little comics for the most part, so anyone could possible enjoy them at any age. Primary appeal will likely be 4th to 7th grade. Wallace, Spud and their buddies are a cute and funny bunch of kids! I enjoyed their comic antics! I especially loved the loves where Wallace got his head stuck inside a Jack'o'lantern; too funny!

This second collection of Wallace the Brave is just as wonderful and delightful as the first. Wallace himself is eager to live life to the fullest while his friends and family support him even in his most outrageous schemes. While the focus is usually on Wallace and his friends Spud and Amelia, his brother and parents are not lost in the comedy of his life. I can't wait for a third visit to Snug Harbor! A wonderful read for any age!

This was a great follow up to Wallace the Brave. I love a book that makes me react out loud! This is one of them. The characters are the best. Henry captures the experience of kiddos and parents so beautifully in really poignant moments and snapshots. The back part is really cool -- a page teaching how to grow an avocado plant, how to keep a field book, and how to make a winter mobile. Love these books!!

SO funny. Calvin and Hobbes for a new generation. Wallace, Spud and Amelia are a great trio, Mom is just SO cool, Sterling is a hot mess, and Dad (not as cool as mom, but he's got serious eyebrow action) - I had some real laugh out loud moments. Great stuff, dry humor, adventure and imagination for the WIN.
Rating: G ; Spud has a pretty serious crush on Amelia.
Recommend: the kids are 1st-2nd grade, but the humor is for all ages. Perfect for anybody who loves Calvin and Hobbes.

Although it took us a little while to warm up to this comic strip, my husband and I know we can always start the day with a chuckle after we read "Wallace" in the daily Providence Journal. Wallace is a funny kid living in RI with a dad who earns a living on the water and a comic book reading mom plus he has an odd little brother and 2 quirky friends. This book is so much fun!
