Level 3 makeup artist student.
Stated before on other reviews that it’s hard to get your hands on quality make-up/beauty books and I only have roughly 5 that has helped me, this is one of them.
This was actually a delight to read and work from, you get a real sense of Lisa’s personality and charm inside this. There’s loads of useful tricks and tips that would help anyone who is a amateur, there isn’t much professional information on the industry side but it still helped me with parts so I can’t fault it. Slightly out-dated looks, but you can always create new trends using these techniques.

Not a bad book. I wanted to know what type of products I should use for my age group and skin kind and this is why I got this book.

It would have been better if the products that were recommended for me were in a list format, and not on different pages so I had to keep flicking back. I’m sure there’s better books of this genre out there. Not recommended if your a beauty nut like me!

A Glamorous Read: A Review of "The Make-Up Manual" by Lisa Potter-Dixon

In the ever-evolving world of beauty, finding a guide that resonates with both novices and seasoned makeup artists can be a daunting task. However, Lisa Potter-Dixon’s "The Make-Up Manual: Your beauty guide for brows, eyes, skin, lips and more" shines as a compelling resource that combines expert insight with practical advice. Having recently delved into this beauty bible, I am pleased to share a four-star review that encapsulates my experience with it.

From the moment I opened the pages, I was instantly captivated by Potter-Dixon’s engaging writing style. Her passion for beauty and a keen understanding of her audience are evident throughout the book. With each chapter focusing on different aspects of makeup, the manual serves as an all-encompassing guide that covers everything from foundational skincare to exquisite eye looks and perfectly sculpted brows.

One of the highlights of the manual is its user-friendly layout. The content is organised in a way that allows readers to easily navigate between sections, making it an ideal tool for both quick reference and in-depth exploration. The clear step-by-step techniques, accompanied by beautiful photographs, provide a visual guide that demystifies even the most complex makeup applications. It's particularly refreshing to see a diverse range of models featured, which reinforces Potter-Dixon’s inclusive approach to beauty.

Moreover, Potter-Dixon doesn’t merely recycle standard tips and tricks; she shares her professional secrets and personal anecdotes that add a delightful touch of personality to the manual. Her emphasis on celebrating individuality and finding one’s unique beauty is not only empowering but encourages readers to experiment and have fun with makeup. The advice on selecting products tailored to different skin tones and types is particularly invaluable, making it a go-to source for anyone looking to refine their beauty regimen.

However, while "The Make-Up Manual" certainly offers a wealth of information, a few areas could benefit from deeper exploration. Some techniques, especially for more advanced looks, may feel somewhat glossed over for those seeking a more intricate understanding. Additionally, while the product recommendations are helpful, a broader range of price points would ensure accessibility for all readers, regardless of their budget.

In conclusion, Lisa Potter-Dixon’s "The Make-Up Manual" is a formidable resource that strikes the right balance between expertise and approachability. Its engaging tone, comprehensive content, and visually appealing layout make it a treat for anyone eager to enhance their makeup skills. With its minor areas for improvement aside, I would confidently recommend this book to anyone looking to refine their beauty routine or simply seeking inspiration. A solid four stars for a guide that truly empowers its readers to embrace their beauty with confidence and creativity!

Good if you’re looking for encouraging, enthusiastic words about makeup, want namedropped products and skincare with an extensive part of the book dedicated to it and plenty of tips and tricks (eg. Strobing or how to turn any lipstick matte or eyebrow grooming).

Not what I was looking for when it comes to industry/pro-MUA tips and approach, but not would be good to complete beginners.

User friendly, colourful and with beautiful pictures. The guide to colour correcting is quite sensible and a lot better than what we can find out there, as is the brow care part.

Whilst I did enjoy reading through this, I think I have so much makeup experience that I didn't really learn much from the book. There was only one tip that I've picked up that I hadn't tried before. However, I wasn't really expecting to learn loads to be honest, I just wanted the book in my collection as it looked fun and I really like Lisa Potter-Dixon. I do think it'd be an excellent choice for someone just finding their feet with makeup, I would've loved this when I was a teenager.

The author writes with lots of exclamation points! It was an easy read with lots of photographs—except for where they would have been really useful. There are illustrations where she discusses eye and lip shapes, and the Asian eye looks little different from most of the other eye illustrations. I didn't learn much from this book but it was fun—would be great for a teenager.

The makeup manual shows you step by step how to do your brows, eyes, skin, and lips. Lisa starts with her skill secrets talking about how to clean and moisturize your skin and make homemade face masks. Then she focuses on foundation and primers. In this section, she talks about concealers, color correctors, and how to uses them. After foundation comes beautiful brows, Lisa starts brow treatments and brow mapping the talks about the different styles of eyebrows. After brows comes the glow, one of the hottest trends Lisa tells you about the different kinds of blushes and highlighters then tells you where to put the pop. She also talks about contouring and so much more.

I loved that Lisa showed all ages of people in her book. I also agree with her one hundred percent that makeup makes you more confident. Right now lots of people are bashing women and girls for wearing makeup. For example, I have seen so many guys on Instagram saying ‘’ take a girl swimming on the first date so you know what they actually look like. But on the bright side, lots of people are standing up for women and their makeup.
I really liked how the book described multiple ways how to do your eyebrows. I would recommend this book to any girl I know because how useful the book is. I only had one problem with the book and that was that all the recommended products cost a way too much. I wish she would have included a cheaper similar product.
