Enough Is Enough: How Students Can Join the Fight for Gun Safety

Rate this book
From award-winning author Michelle Roehm McCann comes a young activist’s handbook to joining the fight against gun violence—both in your community and on a national level—to make schools safer for everyone.

Young people are suffering the most from the epidemic of gun violence—as early as kindergarten students are crouching behind locked doors during active shooter drills. Teens are galvanizing to speak up and fight for their right to be safe. They don’t just want to get involved, they want to change the world. Enough Is Enough is a call to action for teens ready to lend their voices to the gun violence prevention movement. This handbook deftly explains America’s gun violence issues—myths and facts, causes and perpetrators, solutions and change-makers—and provides a road map for effective activism.

Told in three parts, Enough Is Enough also explores how America got to this point and the obstacles we must overcome, including historical information about the Second Amendment, the history of guns in America, and an overview of the NRA. Informative chapters include interviews with teens who have survived gun violence and student activists who are launching their own movements across the country. Additionally, the book includes a Q&A with gun owners who support increased gun safety laws.

I knew that gun safety for students has been an ongoing issue for a long while now, but after reading this book, I realized just how serious it was. And this is it, people. The importance of this book lies in the fact that this is something that needs to be addressed as the urgent issue that it is.

Enough is Enough is an "all you need to know" handbook for anyone who's interested in learning about gun violence in American schools. It's a goldmine of info and statistics, but definitely something that an early high school student could digest without getting bored. Like education without it feeling like studying. I'd recommend it most to anyone who wants to be a sort of spokesperson for this issue, since the goal of this book is clearly to create more activism. It's really clear-cut on how a young person can change society for the better, and I really like that about it.

As always, I didn't find this a perfect book. (What book ever is?) As short as it is, I still felt that we kept going over repetitive ground. And it does that thing that I hate: "If you're not part of the solution, then you're part of the problem." That's pretty much the tone of the whole book, and while it works for others, to me it feels like guilt tripping. Nobody has the time and emotional energy to advocate for everything, but we can always do our little part, and there's no need to guilt people to do more.

With that said, I enjoyed this read. It's quick and informative, and I definitely see this as a good resource to flip through when I need to pull up related info. Worth taking a look at!

Thank you to the publisher for reaching out to me with a copy of this book in exchange for a review.

Enough is Enough is targeted at teens who are interested in becoming activists for gun safety in America. Note that the focus is gun safety and not gun control. Throughout the book, the distinction is made in an effort to assuage gun owners that the goal is not to take away all guns in America, but instead pass commonsense legislation that will make our country safer. The author starts with "A Note to Gun Owners" in which she mentions her own family's love of hunting. Teenage activists are profiled in each chapter, including Riley Mulberger, a young hunter in Pennsylvania who wants safer gun storage laws and stronger background checks nationwide. .
〰️
〰️
The book also profiles gun safety and gun control activists like Julia Spoor, the founder of Students Demand Action, whose father committed suicide. Julia advocates for Red Flag Laws (the only state with a Red Flag Law is Massachusetts), which makes it possible for family members and law enforcement to temporarily take guns away from an individual who poses a threat to himself and others. .

〰️
Overall, this book is well-researched and well-designed. Frequent graphics with statistics about the problem from many different angles both break up the text and serve to highlight the crisis in a salient way. The book is laid out in a clear way starting with the problem itself and then delving into the history and causes of the current situation, followed by examining solutions and laying out an action plan students can follow to get involved and advocate for change. .
〰️
〰️
Solutions for change include legislation in the United States, as well as examples from abroad (did you know that in Japan, those who wish to own a gun must take a class, a written test, a shooting range test, a mental health test and more and even then they can only own an air rifle or shotgun!?). .
〰️
〰️
The book includes a foreword by @shannonrwatts , the founder of Moms Demand Action, as well as extensive recommended resources and a glossary. Book 53 for #30booksummer .

I don't think the book is bad, it just needs some work. I think everyone should read this to understand how messed up the gun situation is in America.
The problem I had with this book is that it became repetitive and I kind of lost my interest towards the end when I read over the same information over and over again. I don't have to read the same piece of information 10 times in the same chapter. It felt like the author needed that word count very badly and it did not turn out well.

As a Dutch person, I really don't get the hype about owning a gun. We don't have guns here and guess what, nobody has died from gun violence yet... that says something right?

I think this book could be and should be used in US education. the book really makes the problem clear about guns and what the RIA does to keep it this way. I was really surprised to learn that the RIA is so much involved into keeping the second amendment.... has no one ever tried to fix that?

overall a very informative book, only a bit repetitive at some points

Geared towards a younger audience for sure, but even as an adult it helped me better understand the gun epidemic in the U.S. Powerful resources were provided to help readers learn more and take action. The book was repetitive, but as someone who gets distracted while reading easily, I appreciated the repetitiveness.

Aimed towards a young American audience, Enough is Enough is a guide book to what young US residents can do about gun violence. The author says it right at the beginning : as a young american, you can change the laws regarding gun policies in the US.

Divided in three parts, we learn about gun-related issues, how those same issues took roots in the country, and finally, what we can do to change that.

I expected a big book, with tiny letters and a thousand footnotes, and was pleasantly surprised to find out I was dead wrong about this. All the numbers and facts are illustrated, notably with charts that are easy on the eyes, and not only that, but throughout the book are scattered several interviews of american teens who are standing up to gun violence, which remind us that all those mass shootings were real, and that real people are doing something so that no more people die in such manners.

In the end, it was a pleasant read, about a dreadfully serious topic. Reading this is a great way to educate yourself to an issue plaguing the US, and learning how to do something about it, the latter point being, I believe, the main reason Ms. McCann wrote the book.

As a French adult, I felt like the author was not adressing me at all, which is kind of a shame. I know gun violence is horrible, and that the american youth is the next generation who will be able to act on the law to change it, but other persons than them care about this problem, even outside the US.

By reading this I wanted to educate myself to gun-related issues, and I did . Simply, the wording made me feel like a third wheel. This is clearly not adressed to me, but if you're between 15 and 25 and an american citizen, you'd probably benefit from reading this, and I look forward to see how this book might make young people get involved in political life to make the US a safer place for everyone !

Enough is Enough by Michelle Roehm McCann is a book I have been anxiously waiting to read but that sadly disappointed me a lot. It was very informational and has really helped me figure out my own opinions a lot better, but there are just too many things lacking.

It seemed as if the author had too many things going on at once, which made the whole book feel incohesive . There also seemed to be some things that would contradict each other or where the wording did not make much sense. I felt like there were too many facts and numbers thrown at you without any rhyme or reason where you needed to come to your own conclusions, rather than be guided by the author to whatever point she was trying to make.

We really need a book that addresses these issues and does it well. Sadly this one fell short by a long shot for me.

I ended up struggling with this book. I'm unsure if it was because it was on kindle but there were a few parts where the letters wErE lIkE ThIs. This was really irritating to me and I found it hard to read.

I am 100% for gun control so I found this to be interesting and very well put together. I think that this a book that should be a requirement in school, as well as some of those people up above that think we don't need gun control, though I don't think it will help.

The hard part for me is that this book, although well written and has many different ways to help, isn't going to do anything to change how this country is. All of this information is out there, but it still hasn't helped.

This book was gifted to me by Netgalley for a review.
I do really hope that this is a book that the school aged kids will get a chance to read. I think by that time, their minds have already been made up due to their parents' opinions, but at least it gives the students a shot at learning how this country goes.

The epidemic of gun violence in this country has sparked many young people to activism – this book celebrates a diverse group of passionate young activists working for change in interviews and profiles and then invites others to join.

Written in 4 parts, the book moves from laying out the complex issue of gun violence (suicide, homicide, domestic violence, mass shootings, accidental deaths) and how we got to this point before transitioning to a wide range of possible solutions, with a lot of nuance and points where compromise seems possible even in such polarizing times.

The book ends with a roadmap for advocacy – marches, protests, writing letters, attending town halls, boycotts, contacting legislators, and more. This is the work of democracy – building consensus across a variety of perspectives and beliefs – toward a common good. Enough is Enough is a critical example of well-researched persuasive writing that assumes the best in us – that we can disagree and still work together.

If I can give this book a negative five stars, I would. It’s probably one of the most hypocritical books I have ever read. I love how the author starts with, “ We are not trying to take your guns away,” but then finds reasons to ban guns throughout the book. She also begins with, “ This is not a political matter, which is bogus since all she speaks about is politics. I also love (sarcasm) how she conveniently missed many statics; it didn’t show the crime in Mexico, huh? I wonder why? She doesn’t know that Mexico has extreme gun control and that the entire country only has one gun shop, yet the gun crime is outrageous. Funny how you missed that. How about Yemen? You also have to love the excuses she makes for the crime in Chicago… typical liberal.

This book needed to be written and I'm glad it has been published. Written for teens and young adults who are interested in advocating for gun safety in their communities. There is tons of information packed into this easily accessible book. Not only will it inspire teens to to fight for gun safety, I found the overall message on how to build a movement from the grassroots applicable to all types of issues needing change.

Good for statistics, graphics, giving a voice to teens/teen stories, and talking about this topic with a younger audience. I also liked that this discussed gun suicide as much as mass shootings, because these topics aren't linked as much as they should be. But very focused on gun safety rather than gun control or decreasing the overall number of guns in our society. And very focused on promoting one organization's efforts in this arena. An easy read, and very informative.

What a marvelous job Michelle McCann has done laying plain all the facts and bringing all kinds of voices to the table, especially the teen girl hunter from Pennsylvania. The section on the NRA coup and their switch from gun safety to gun advocacy will be a real eye-opener for so many current and future teen advocates. Glad this book is in the world.

A cogent primer on gun-sense activism, interspersed with snippets of information about youthful activists. While the focus is on gun-sense, and with much less radical interventions than my personal taste, the path to the “art of the possible” is presented in detail. Without losing itself in the trees, enough detail is here to build and sustain a movement at any level.

I remember the walkout in support of Parkland at my middle school, an inspiring teachable moment as an educator. This book maps the next step for the next generation.

Didn't include as much of the colonial context for gun culture as I'd have liked, but otherwise a good starting resource for students or anyone with limited time who want to get familiar with the gun safety movement.

I have learned a lot from this book but the two main issues for me was repetition and feeling like i wasn't the audience they wanted.
