An exacting photographer and a spunky gallery assistant spit fire at each other when they first meet, but soon find themselves creating sparks between the sheets.
Renowned photographer Brooks Kincaid returns to Nook Island with a single goal: sell out his show so he can hang onto his Brooklyn apartment. He doesn't anticipate the mouthy gallery assistant who picks him up at the airport, or that he'll make a total ass of himself in front of him. And he definitely doesn't anticipate the force of his attraction to the red-headed spark plug.
But Liam Wells won't be won over so easily. As New Year's Eve draws to a close, Brooks is running out of time to convince Liam they're meant to be. Maybe something more drastic is in order?
NOTE: This is a 27K SHORT STORY that was first available as part of a promotional giveaway. No new content has been added.
Neve Wilder lives in the southern U.S., where the summers are hot and the winters are...sometimes cold. She is a mom to three rambunctious weebeasts who have joined forces in a mission to carpet the family home with toys and small items that really suck to step on at six in the morning.
She reads promiscuously, across multiple genres, but her favorite stories always contain an element of romance. Incidentally, this is also what she likes to write. Slow-burners with delicious tension? Yes. Whiplash-inducing page-turners, also yes. Down and dirty scorchers? Yes. And every flavor in between.
Neve isn't keen on being limited to one type of story or a single genre. If you enjoy slow burns and musicians, the Rhythm of Love series might be up your alley.
You'll find high heat, crackling sexual tension, and a variety of angst levels in the new adult Extracurricular Activities series that begins with Want Me.
Like smart-ass antiheroes and super steamy thrill rides? Stay tuned for the upcoming Wages of Sin series, which begins with Bad Habits.
If you need a good cry, Center of Gravity is a standalone age-gap slow burn that examines grief, enduring love, and imperfect characters doing their best (or worst, as it were) in shitty situations.
Neve fervently believes David Bowie was the sexiest musician to ever live, and she's always game to nerd out on anything from music to writing.
And finally, she believes that love conquers all. Except the heat index in July. Nothing can conquer that bastard.
Don't remember this story well enough to write a review. But I remember I liked it, and left a note at the end with a 3.5 star rating.
"Over time, most of us are shaped by shoulds and shouldn’ts into a person who colors between the lines. It’s not anyone’s fault, really, but anyone who defies that and forges their own path has my deepest respect. Taking photographs of men, dressed or undressed, doesn’t make you any less of an artist.”
It is totally unfair how Neve Wilder can emotionally compromise me like this 🥲
This novella was a wonderful addition to the Nook Island series(?), following some time after the events of Center of Gravity (talk about an emotionally destructive book! gah). It was less angsty and grief heavy than Center of Gravity, but still had an undeniable emotional pull.
I loved the flirting and connection and conversations between Liam and Brooks. They had such an amusing banter going on throughout their interactions. The side characters, once again, were wonderfully distinct without taking over the story, they helped support Liam and Brooks' romance.
This novella is just chock full of hope and growth and emotion, and overall just warm fuzzy feelings. Neve Wilder is an incredible writer, and I hope maybe someday she'll continue on Nook Island.
I had this in my library for ages from a Prolific Works giveaway. Not sure why I hadn’t read it yet as Neve Wilder has become a favorite author of mine. Then I saw she had put it on kindle unlimited and got it that way so I could support her more! I’m just kicking myself for not reading it sooner.
“Sightlines,” is a lovely novella set in Wilder’s, “Nook Island,” world. It centers around Liam, a coworker of Alex from, “Center of Gravity,” and Brooks, a prickly photographer. Brooks has roots in Nook Island but is only in town to do a show at the gallery where Liam works. Sparks fly immediately between the two but Liam is wary of getting involved since Brooks won’t be staying long.
The good? “Sightlines,” is well developed for being so short. I loved spending time on the island again and getting to check in again with Alex and Derek was a treat. Neve can write angst with the best of them but this one was fairly light and super sexy.
The bad? Well it’s not really bad. It’s just that when I read, “Center of Gravity,” I wanted a story for Reese and Tom. Now after reading this one, I’m needing a story for Mika and Henry too. 😂😍
This story probably would have been better served as a full length one, because I didn't quite feel the connection between Liam and Brooks, as I have usually felt with the MC's of all of Neve Wilder's other books I've read.
I understood Liam's POV and why he was cautious, but he truly did feel hot and cold with Brooks and it threw me off, probably more than it seemed to for Brooks, but it bothered me. One minute he disliked him, then wanted him, then turns him down - I mean he did have a date, yeah, but still - and then later that night when he date falls through he gets annoyed when there seems to be another guy hanging over Brooks, but then he's still resistant to starting something, but then he gives in, but then no wait it was supposed to only be a one time thing, but then oh wait fuck it, lets do it again. I felt a little bit of whiplash with Liam, personally.
Then by the end I didn't feel the love they proclaimed. And that's not to say I hated this or anything, I still enjoyed Brooks and Liam when he wasn't going back and forth over everything and they did have hot sex, so I decided to give this 3 stars. It was still good, it just disappointed me when I've come to expect more from this author. The chemistry was there, but there could have been more, and I just think this would have benefited from being full length to really get into Liam's hang ups and build up their connection better.
Still enjoyable, just not the best, in my opinion.
Red-haired Liam, who is refreshingly candid, falls for bearded artist, who is rescued from his jadedness. Guess which character I hardly took to? And therein is the qualm. What to feel about a story with one beguiling gallery assistant and one pampered photographer who seems undeserving of the other's attention? During this time of sequestering, you stick with it if only for their banter, which mostly makes up for that character you disdain.
What a treat it is to return to Nook Island, even if only for a novella. Then again, Neve Wilder could write the dictionary or a phone book and I’m sure I’d read every word.
Although Sightlines centers on Liam, a gallery worker, and Brooks, a slightly cantankerous photographer, it’s all the other sassy, funny, and well-meaning supporting characters who make this story as well as every other one of her books a treasure. World-building.
Some authors must be read, and I urge everyone to pick up one of Neve Wilder’s books and see for yourself. Her brilliant writing style and painstaking attention to detail places the reader right in the middle of the pages. I, for one, can’t get enough of her work! Five stars ~ Highly recommend this one.
The perfect companion to the first book featuring a different couple. Liam and Brooks are just hot together. I love a bit of pining in my books and the ending was really cute. This year I’m aiming to finish all of Neve Wilder’s books on my Tbr, on to my next NW adventure.😉
This is pretty adorable -- I definitely enjoyed the no-so-meet-cute meeting between Liam and Brooks. I thought Liam was being a bit too fickle, changing his decisions about Brooks here and there, but hey, it all worked out in the end, didn't it? I did like the two of them together.
Having said that, I REALLY want to read a story about Mika and Henry. That one sounds like a possible delicious tale to be told, with Henry being so far in the closet ^^
Haven't read the others but this was really good. I wouldn't call it enemies to lovers but there was definitely some snipping going on lol. And Mika is a hoot. I want to read his story.
This was the next-to-last of Neve Wilder's published ouvre I got to read. It was extremely short (abt 27k words).
Liam and Brooks had a neat chemistry that helped sell the idea of the two of them falling so hard for each other. One of the reasons why I liked them so much was that they were honest as to what they needed and why they were reluctant to pursue a serious relationship when they first met. So the story didn't segue into miscommunications/misunderstandings.
The sex scenes were good par the course in any Neve Wilder story.
I ate up every single scene with Mika and his maybe/maybe not flirtation with SRS BIZNESS Henry. There was a GOOD STORY there and I really, really need it, LOL.
On the downside, I did find the ending to be so rushed that it killed a lot of the earlier, joyful momentum. Instead of being shown Liam and Brooks connecting, the book told readers what they did and how they worked a compromise, etc. Even a v. neat sex scene soon faded to black (I'm guessing because the author was running out of space, but I digress.)
Although this was marketed as a standalone, I'd disagree a little. To me, reading Center of Gravity first will help ppl orient themselves as to who the cast was comprised of. Also, there was another Wilder 'verse s/o to Porter and Graves (from Dedicated.)
TL;DR: An all-too short story that is less on the aperitif side of things. Though I liked the MCs, my attention shifted often to Mika and the skittish Henry. In an ideal world, there would be a 300-page Mika/Henry novel all ready for me to dive in. Alas.
I'm a sucker for a well-constructed and well-written novella that doesn't try to be more than it has to be, and this hits the spot perfectly.
Despite being set in the same universe as Center of Gravity, here we have none of the angst but all of the fun push and pull, bantery flirtation that Wilder does so well. It's not quite a rom-com, but it feels like something that could be a rom-com movie, if that makes sense.
The one thing I will say is that it has, yet again, a hint of a couple that we'll probably never see more of. I don't know if the author was planning on this being a longer series when he started and it just didn't turn out that way, but it's like dangling candy in front of a child.
After "Center of Gravity," I am hopeful to get more stories set on Nook Island. This novella was a charming story. Plot: Liam is an assistant at a gallery assigned to deal with Brooks, a photographer whose work is being shown. They don't get off to a great start, but soon realize there's a spark between them. Liam is a firecracker of a character that I really enjoyed. The banter between him and Brooks is top notch. The story was well-developed considering how short it was. I agree with the other reviewers who are asking for more...Reese and Tom, as well as Mika and Henry. I would love to read those stories.
A nice story, but not as intense as other stories by this author. There was a little too much of the hot/cold vibe throughout the story, mostly from Liam, and I'd have liked it better if more of their relationship had developed when they were actually in the same town, meeting face to face, rather than through texts & phone calls near the end of the story. I didn't feel the draw between Brooks & Liam as much as I've come to expect from Neve Wilder's characters.
For a novella, this is great! It’s short, it’s sweet, it’s steamy and much more lighthearted than it’s predecessor. The dialogue is witty, it’s quick, and though there’s not a lot of brooding, Brooks and Liam feel very REAL.
This one is great for a casual, quiet summer afternoon read.
I loved the first in the series and this one brings in some characters but mainly settles on two totally different individuals, the world acclaimed photographer Brooks Kincaid (on the cover) and general gallery gopher Liam Wells (a flashy redhead who should have been on the cover because he's the whole story).
In any case, read the blurb and dive right in.
My only complaint is that this one came out in 2019 and we have yet to get any word as to whether author Neve Wilder will continue the series--because these guys are worth it.
I love Nook Island and all of its characters. Brooks and Liam are a wonderful case of opposites attract. There’s lots of sexy push and pull and steamy times. I can’t wait to return for Mika’s story.
Good, quick read. Great character development and interesting storyline. The author made it easy for me to love Brooks and Liam. Their banter and chemistry made for some good dialogue and spicy sexy times. I look forward to more by this author.
I absolutely adored this short story! Neither as always delivered an amazing, sexy, tantalizing, funny story. I am absolutely in love with Brooks and Liam. I need the other characters stories ASAP! In love
Such a sweet book! I loved the characters and really wished that there was a bit more with them! I also hope that the side characters get explored a bit more at some point.
3.5 stars. Very cute, but it could have used more space to develop in the middle. Things went awfully fast once Brooks left. It could easily have been a much longer book. A lot was touched upon, but never fully elaborated on.
It’s sweet story I liked it and the MCs are adorable and cute together. Liam is a sweetheart. I would’ve enjoyed more if there wasn’t the fuck buddy 1st everything experience who became the BFF part because I can’t believe that fuckbuddies can became bff, even less friends and then talk about the hook ups, it was unnecessary really! I hate all of this shit in the stories.
This was a super cute little novella. I haven't read book 1 yet, but I think I'll buy it. I'm a little nervous that Neve put this series to bed though since it hasn't been updated in a number of years. Hopefully there are more coming? I'd hate to get invested in some amazing characters only to not learn where they lead.
This was a great peek onto Nook Island, getting to see Alex and Rob so happy. Mika is definitely a favorite and I'm crossing my fingers for an HEA for him soon.
