Water, water everywhere ... but not a drop to drink.
Alfhild Daemonne's beloved Speckled Wood is dying.
When several Whittlecombe locals are taken seriously ill, she discovers that the water in and around the village has been poisoned.
The wonky inn owner knows full well her bitter arch-rivals The Mori are out to do serious harm to her reputation, her business, and the land she cherishes - and yet she’s the one being scapegoated.
Once again, the villagers have placed the blame firmly at poor Alf's door.
Meanwhile, the ancient and magickal Keeper of the Marsh, an ancient tree named Vance, is furious with her.
She’s going to have to mollify him.
And that won’t be easy.
Is Alf up to fighting The Mori alone? Can she gather the right experts who will help her in the battle to clear her name?
And will she be able to appease Vance and therefore cleanse the springs and marshes around the village?
Find out in this action-packed instalment of the wonky inn series, full to bursting with the ghosts, witches, wizards, warlocks and weirdness you’ve come to adore.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ The series continues to improve with each book, this one was quite a bit longer then the other books in the series which I considered too short. This book didn’t pad words onto the book but really notched up the excitement, it almost felt like an urban fantasy book. So invested in the series now that I plan on reading the final two book released books in the series right away.
The Mystery of the Marsh Malaise: Wonky Inn Book 5
How many love interests can one girl have...one...two...three? Oh my! But all is not fair in love or war, and Alf has had her heart already bruised twice — ribbit.
The Mystery of the Marsh Malaise #5 - I absolutely love this series. You never know what to expect from Ms. Wycherley and her crew. Just when you think you know what's going to happen, there's a twist and you're off again working it out. The characters grow on you and the ghosts are a big part of the enjoyment. Yes, there's some darkness in this story; you've the good vs. the bad, plus a lot more in the storylines. There's a new ghost and he's great; I enjoyed what he and another ghost did to help Alf. With George, you know he's going to be found sooner or later, but what else is found and the result is hilarious. Alf is still my type of witch and she keeps kickin' it. Read these books sequentially, it is worth the time invested. A good, clean story full of interesting characters of all sorts and well thought out storylines with twists you just don't see coming sometimes. I'm curious about the next ride Ms. W. has in store for her readers. I contacted the author to review her books and received this through Booksprout. 5*
The Wonkiest Witch: Wonky Inn Book #1 - This is my first read by this author and I enjoyed the story. As I became wrapped up in the pages, I started enjoying the storylines and the characters and wondering how much witch Alf would become. Since I've been reading about witches a lot lately, I get bored when I come across another witch refusing to be herself. Why deny what you are; do you give yourself a lobotomy if you're intelligent and want to dumb down to normal? One of my role models, as a kid, was Samantha Stevens, she remained true to herself, and an independent woman, regardless of her silly husband's demands; unlike Jeannie, a beautiful, two-legged Labrador (eager to please her master). Ms. Wycherley's writing style is conversational and casual. The likable and interesting characters are developing at a good rate and will probably gain more depth as the series continues. The storylines do a good job setting the foundation from which the series will build. Once the intros are made there's plenty of intrigue and suspense. A fire opens a can of troubles bringing the witch in Alf to full acceptance. A unique use of ghosts, which I've never read. I'm curious about the rest of the stories. I found this author on and her book through Booksprout. 4*
The Ghosts of Wonky Inn #2 - As much as I liked the first book, I loved this one. I absolutely love the ghosts and what they can actually do. This is one of the things I love about this series; plus the fact that the witch uses magic instead of denying who she is. The variety of ghostly characters are great. I couldn't put the book down, I was so immersed in the fast paced, funny and intriguing storylines. The characters range in personalities, eras and locations, lending the story depth and substance. I wish all the books of the series had already been published so I could chain read them. I contacted the author to review her books. 5*
Weird Wedding At Wonky Inn #3 - The additions to this series just keep getting better. Another hard to put down story. I love some of the guest characters; especially when she hit him (read the story), although why use blackmail in this case? Alf mixes a party with a vampire wedding and wonders what else is going to happen; lots do happen. Great-grandmother brings her share to the table and then splits, leaving a spot of bother. George is great with his acceptance of the vamps since he didn't get on board quickly about Alf being a witch previously; what trust is that. The past is over for Alf as she finds the Mori is still about. Oh, speaking of the past, how about crazed villagers and a burning (read the story). That's all the spoilers I've giving out. There's more but I want you to enjoy the book like I did, without a book report. I contacted the author about reviewing her books and received this through Booksprout. 4*
Fearful Fortunes and Terrible Tarot #4 - I can't get enough of this series. I enjoy the characters and their functions throughout the series. This one has almost everyone undercover. Another well thought out addition full of intrigue and suspense, and humor. The storylines are developing and there's definitely bad news ahead. This book is darker than the previous ones and Alf gets to experience what witches suffered through centuries past. I didn't care for the ending; of course for the main reason (read the book) and Alf's attitude was nonchalant concerning that reason. I did enjoy Mama Henri, a voodoo queen from NOLA. 4*
The Witch Who Killed Christmas - If you at all can, read the other books first, there's spoilers. Another well written, entertaining story that starts around Christmas, just months later after Wonkiest ended. While not as intriguing as Wonkiest, there was a difficult problem to solve. The cast of interesting characters are still around. The writing style is still casual with humor and drama dispersed throughout the story, this is a quickly read novella. I definitely want to read the rest of the stories. I found this book on Booksprout. 4*

The Mysterious Mr Wylie #6 – Entertaining and intriguing. Good storylines continued and new make this an interesting series. The past and the present come together with a bit of time travel to 1983, not a time I would have picked. The pace is fast and the characters, old and new, along with the humor help keep the reader immersed in the pages. It is great to see D back and he adds a bit of sexual tension to mix; good banter between him and A. 4*
The Great Witchy Cake Off #7 – There is a whole lot of intrigue with the murder, and pas and possible new love interest. I was happy with all the baking and not one bite available for me to sample, which is so sad since all the desserts sounded worthwhile to indulge with a cuppa. Again, there are good storylines, good characters with appearances from previous books and plenty of additional features in the background making Number 7 a toothy read. After reading so many of this series, it is hard not to get into a book report instead of a review, but I’ll let you discover that for yourself. 4*
Vengeful Vampire at Wonky Inn #8 - while it started slow for me, I was not in the mood for vampires, the pace picked up and I was immersed in the captivating storylines and good characters. This ended up being a good read. The author's talented blending of old and new storylines, vivid descriptions, I fell in love with Romania again, and her creative creation of characters made this story hard to put down once everything came together. Plenty of intrigue and suspense with touches of humor and romance. I contacted the author to review her books and received this book through Booksprout. 4*

Magic, Murder and a Movie Star, #10 - I laughed myself silly with the names of the Witchywood movie cast. Fun. Entertaining. Good story lines with a seamless blending of the old with the new. The characters are always good in this series; you cannot help but love the regular crew and some of the new ones. Lovely surprise for Alfhind near the end. Well written and well thought out. 5*
Judge, Jury and Jailhouse Rockcakes, #11 - A wonderful story with plenty of humor through out the drama, a good balance. Well written and well thought out, the story lines were interesting and the book was hard to put down. Professor Dodo appears in this story; his interesting story is the first of the Wonderland Detective Agency series. Alf's experience as a Goblin is entertaining while performing a great deal of investigations in record time. 5*
A Midsummer Night’s Wonky, #12 - A lot of serious business going on this time around. There is a heatwave that does not help. 80 degrees F in Germany is almost as bad as 100 deg F in Texas, so imagine 70s in the UK. A whole lot of love is happening, including Manc and Silvan, which creates havoc for C and A. A good story. 4*
Pieces of Hate, #15 - It has been a long time since I read Vengeful Vampire at Wonky Inn, #8. I worried about missing the several books between Vengeful and Pieces. Silly me, it was like I never left. I still remembered the characters from the previously read stories. Pieces was fun and interesting, and I did not put the book down until the last page. It was enjoyable to return to Wonky Inn, and this story did not disappoint. Wonky Inn is one of my favorite series to get lost in at any time. 5* Wonky Inn Series End.
Wonderland Detective Agency series. Dead as a Dodo - I enjoy reading books by this author and this one fits in. There are characters from The Wonky Inn series. Eliseo is a good character along with the rest of the cast. Interesting. Fun. Good story lines. Better than a Cozy mystery. 4* Wonderland Detective Agency series end.
Once more, you need a scorecard to keep up with all the activity in this book! The action never stops!
Feeling anxious and uncomfortable, Alfhild Daemonne, the quirky witch owner of the Wonky Inn, hurried through the streets and into a bookshop that finally muffled the loud sounds and gave her some comfort. She rushed to the back of the shop and pushed on a set of books which opened a secret room. She continued on, a computer verifying her palm print, and exited back into the rain on Celestial Street. She continued following directions she had been given through this bad area where darker, marginalized witches, wizards, mages and sages, sorcerers and sorceresses worked their magic. She entered The Web and Flame pub. A man sat at a table and looked at her, not identifying himself. She put down an envelope of money and he told her to sit down. He took the money, then said he could not help her. In fury, she ran away from him. She had to find out if George was still alive!
When the Mori tried to kill Alf and failed, they had taken George from her. Wizard Shadowmender had everyone searching but they were making no progress. Alf swirled her hand in a pool of water and felt a mild electric shock. She put her hand back in and felt it again, asking if there were any eels in the water. As they walked away, she saw the surface ripple.
When Whittlecombe villagers become seriously ill, the problem appears to be with the water which Alf finds has been poisoned. Once again, she is getting blamed for anything bad that happens. Even getting help from the magical Keeper of the Marsh, an ancient tree named Vance, doesn’t seem possible since he is also angry for being poisoned. The Mori are getting bolder and she will have to face them soon before they succeed in totally discrediting her. Can she be successful? Will she find and rescue George?
Just as in previous books, the reader experiences the author’s great writing, great character development, and an escalating story line, getting darker with each new story! Don’t miss this latest book in the series! With everything going on with the evil Mori, you won’t want to be left behind!
Why is Mr. Hoo and some of the villagers getting sick? As with the previous four books, I found this to be quite enjoyable. I just love the idea of an Inn run by a Witch and a staff of ghosts. The predicaments they get into are different from any other story. Alf is trying her best to find her fiance George, so she takes a trip to London to seek help. Something in town is making the villagers sick and poor Mr. Hoo isn't feeling well either. Everyone is blaming Alf for the sickness, so with the help of her ghost friends she sets out to prove she is innocent of any wrongdoing and find the responsible party. So who is causing the problems you ask? You will have to read the book to find out. Its a great series and I also would recommend you read from the beginning. They are stand alone books, but you get so much more from them if you read them in order. I received a ARC and am leaving an honest and unbiased review because I want to.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.e of the villagers getting sick?
Time for ecological problems (i.e. bad water) at the Wonky Inn!
Another zany installment of the Wonky Inn story. This is book five in the series. While it is best to start at the beginning so that you understand all the players, I think it is okay to jump in at any point. You might not understand all the relationships immediately, but you will catch on to the main parts quick enough. Of course, once you finish this one, you will want to go back and read the others anyway...
I love the combination of drama, mystery and humor that is found in these books. The stories are always well written, with intriguing plot lines and several twists and turns to the mystery. And the cast of characters is, as always, the best, providing help and comedy relief in near equal measures. The Wonky Inn just bubbles with that sort of controlled chaos that makes a place seem comfortable and welcoming. I am ready to grab a chair by the fireplace and talk to the ghosts!
Highly recommended.

The Mystery of the Marsh Malaise is another delightful installment in Jeannie Wycherley’s charming Wonky Inn series. As the fifth book, it continues to build on the quirky, magical world I’ve come to love, while introducing fresh characters that add depth and intrigue to the story. Wycherley’s writing is as atmospheric and witty as ever, blending mystery, whimsy, and just the right touch of the supernatural.
Kim Bretton once again delivers a stellar narration—her performance brings each character to life with warmth and personality, making the audiobook an absolute joy to listen to. Her voice perfectly captures the tone of the series and enhances the immersive experience.
This book didn’t just meet my expectations—it exceeded them. If you’ve been following the series, you’ll be thrilled with how the story continues to evolve. And if you’re new to the Wonky Inn, you’re in for a treat. Highly recommended!
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and I have voluntarily left this review.
This series has kept me up all night, falling asleep during the day, once I start reading I want to finish the book in one sitting. Alf once again is having problems of the magical variety and following George being kidnapped she goes to the dark streets of celestial street in London (paranormal village) to employ the services of a dark wizard to help her train in the darker aspects of witchcraft. Will it be too little too late or will her new wizard friend be able to help her save her ghostly family and friends? Loved the turn at the pond, and so glad Mr Hoo is now better it was a bit of a bitter dark twist when he no longer was guiding Alf. If you haven’t read any of this series start at book 1 and follow Alf as she packs up her life in London to claim her inheritance of a village and her wonky inn in rural Devon. If you like paranormal series with a bit of a different storyline than usual cozy mysteries this series is for you.
Alf is faced with an epic battle between the forces of the Mori, and other magical forces.
A guardian needs to be appeased if the land and its resources are to remain healthy - and there are those who are trying to turn the village against Alf and her friends. of course, there are those who have already joined the Mori cause, or at least been willing to gain because of it.
Alf trains for what lies ahead - and might well discover many brave hearts, but most romantic ones at least a bit untrue.
As she gains some space and perspective, perhaps she can gain more insight into the next phase for the Inn.
Always wonky - and full of surprises! delightful!

So no this is not the sort of book you can read without having read at least some of the earlier books in the series as you would have no idea what is " going on " Each book appears to get progressively " darker " and this one is full of dark magic and more " war like " than the others before it . Will it be second time unlucky in love for Alf ? Will the woods succumb to the poison along with the whole village ? More surprises, more new characters and the return of a few old ones and bigger battles over at wonky inn This is not a book to read before bedtime unless you don't tend to wards nightmares but it is a book you wont want to miss ( and please hurry up with the next one )

George is missing and Alf is on a mission to find him and destroy the Mori. Alf has decided to hire a dark witch to train her to fight the Mori and hone her witchy skills. But time seems to be running out when the town’s water supply has been tampered with and all signs point to Alf and her Wonky Inn. Can she save the ecosystem, find George, and vanquish the Mori? Not by herself, she can’t! By finding her inner strength and relying on skills as well as opening herself to the help of others, Alf realizes the only way to conquer all that is bad, she must rely on a little help from her friends.
This is a clean and magical cozy witch mystery with a great storyline, lots of magical characters, some action, and a lot of intrigue.

Another great read in the series. A great plot that has the Inn's inhabitants and guests banding together. However all is not what it seems on the romantic front for Alf and she is faced with a heartbreaking revelation. Loved the way the characters are intermingled - the ghosts with the living, the past with the present and the bad with the good. Not all is as it seems. George has been missing for weeks and she is now desperate. Desperate enough to seek help from the dark side. Her woods have been poisoned and the nefarious activities of the Mori have led the villagers to believe it is her fault. Plus the Mori are becoming more obvious in there attempts to take her down. Will she be able to help George? Is his love as true as hers? Is Jed's really as black as he has been painted? Will the ancient guardian help them clean up the poisoning?
"An Incredible Magical Mystery Romance series" The storylines are adorable and exciting. The characters have amazing personalities. Alf is a spunky and sassy young witch. She owns and runs the Whittle Inn aka the Wonky Inn. The Inn is çalled this because most of the staff are ghosts. Alf has been having problems with an evil organization called the Mori. The Mori have tried to steal the Inn from Alf. Tried to kill her , and now they have taken her human fiance George. George is also a police detective for their town. Not only must she find and rescue George , but someone contaminated the water around town. Alf's Inn is being blamed for the contamination! Can Alf find George ,and clear her Inn's name? You will love this super exciting, wacky, funny, thrilling, and adorable mystery romance. This is a five star plus story and series.
The Mystery of the Marsh Malaise - a review by Rosemary Kenny
Poison in the Speckled Wood's pool, a supernatural, tree-like forest Guardian, (called Vance) who dwells therein, shenanigans in the Whittle (Wonky), Inn's well-room and threats from subverted villagers to lynch Alfhild 'Alf' Daemonne as an evil witch - will the evil Mori's schemes to control Whittlecombe and seize Alf's (and great-grandmother/ghost, Gwyn's), powers never end?
Who is Silvan and why does Alf meet him secretly? What power does the ring's mysterious red stone possess?
The Mystery of the Marsh Malaise, Book 5 in L.C. Mawson's brilliant Wonky Inn series presents laughs, scares and a surprise ending that will leave you relaxed and very happy you decided to get a copy for yourself...wait, you did get it didn't you? If not, don't wait to grab your copy today...shoo!!
Alfhild takes herself off to London to meet with Silvan, a warlock who can help to train her in offensive magic. Unfortunately, he’s dark magic and refuses to help her at first. But he changes his mind and returns to the Whittle Inn with her. Alf doesn’t realise how much hard work the training will be but she is determined to find George. She and her whacky crew look for anything that can help them and she already has Penelope Quigwell, with her team, working on finding out who is behind the Mori. She also finds technical help with a purloined computer from the ghost of a computer expert. As usual there’s a lot of quirky fun in with all the serious stuff. Good series!
Audiobook review: Excellent narration, pleasant voice, and easy to understand.
Story review: This story was very suspenseful and very enjoyable. Several loose ends were tied up making the ending very satisfying. You could read this as a standalone but I recommend the whole series. Alf has made her inn successful but some villagers are still distrustful of her magic. She is also a ghost whisperer and many work for her at her inn. The evil forces are determined to take everything from Alf especially her land regardless of the consequences to others. There are many interesting characters in this story.

Jeannie Wycherley left Book 4 with a cliffhanger but Book 5 was totally worth the wait. George is still missing, the Mori are assembling and Alf must decided how far on the dark side she's willing to go to solve both problems.
I like that Alf has some self doubts but uses them to make herself stronger instead of indecisive. She surrounds herself with wise and supportive people and ghosts, including her great grandmother, Gwyn, who is starting to trust Alf and showing a sense of humor. The story and the dialog are strong. I just really enjoyed this book.

The 5th book in the Wonky Inn series, Alf will once again win your heart. With her team of supernaturals she sets up to clearing her name from yet another crime. Though Jeannie Wycherley has come up with an amazing book - which I would have normally rate as 5 - I'm very disappointed with the editing of this book. This book had more than it's share of grammatical errors.
However since this is her 1st book which has come across so badly edited I'm not going to hold it against her. Looking forward to a well edited book 6 in the Wonky Inn series.

this is the 5th book of the Wonky Inn Series. IF you have not at least read the one before, it will be difficult to get into the story. The book picks up where the last one ended - George, Alf's fiancé is missing after the last battle with the Mori and Alf is getting desperate. To add injury the water in her beloved Speckled Wood has been poisoned and it affects not only the trees, but all living creatures, including the villagers. Alf is up to her neck, but with courage and friends she fights back against the Mori. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
It's been seven weeks since Alf&;s very good friend, the detective George. It;s driving her crazy. She cares for him and wants him back. With this in mind she goes on the dark web and finds a necromancer to train her in the deadly arts. If nice Alf can;t win then Nasty Alf will win. So she starts to hone her evil skills. She;ll be ready for the Mori and for bringing George back. The road to the rescue is long hard and dangerous. But will it be worth it? Another fantastic journey in Alf;s life as she learns what it is to be a great witch. Fantastic story and read!!

” The Mystery of the Marsh Malaise: Wonky Inn Book 5” by Jeanne Wycherley is a tale of what happens when Alfhild Daemonne’s Speckled Wood begins to sicken and the folk of Whittlecombe including Mr Hoo begin to show symptoms of a strange illness...never before seen....It’s all up to Alf to get to the bottom of this issue and save the day...but how?!? She knows it was The Mori...but what method did they use?!? And what will undo the damage?!? Another delightful story from author Jeanne Wycherley...Much enjoyed and Highly Recommended.

Audiobook: I enjoyed this book as much as the preceding four in the series. I felt for Alf when she realized the extent of the damage to the woods and the creatures of the woods after it was determined that there was something wrong with the water. I applauded Alf's proactive actions as she worked to solve the mystery and to find a way to resolve the issue. I liked the new characters who played a role in the story. I admired Kim Bretton's narration as her performance added to my enjoyment of the story. I was given a copy of the audiobook. I volunteered, without financial gain, to post this review which reflected my honest opinions regarding this audiobook.
Oh my word, what has Alf gotten herself into now? Poor George is still missing, no one is looking or still interested in finding him it seems except Alf.
Now there’s this weirdness with the water. The Speckled Wood has been affected. Alf feels it as she walks through feeling the trees. Of course this is just one more thing for the villagers to blame her for. It is so convincingly laid at her feet.
So Alf must round up her crew of misfits and figure out what is going on to help her beloved wood, and the village. Hopefully in the meanwhile find out something about George too.
You are a Good witch but would you consider dark magic and under what circumstance? That is Alf's decision as we begin the story. However, there are other things going on and the Mori are always there to consider too.
Great addition to series. fast fun read, Can be done in a day. Does stand alone but will want to play catch up for the fine details.
Mr. Hoo, my best to you and that is all I can say so people will read about you. Love how the the dark vs good magic plays out in this book.
This is my honest and freely given review. I did receive an ARC book.
It had been weeks and George was still missing so Alf took it upon herself to hire Horace T Silvanus who was a dark witch, necromancer, and mercenary to help her. What does the Mori have planned? Can Silvanus really help? What about the pictures on the phone? For these and many more question you really need to read this cozy. I Love Jeannie work! I love the twists in this story. You will be happy if you pick this one up. I really enjoyed the book. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.
Alf is at her wit's end she has to find George she will enlist the help of a dark Warlock Silvan. But finding her lost fiance isn't her only problem something is wrong with the water two people are already I'll her beloved woods are not safe either and poor Mr. Hoo. There will be a major battle with the Mori someone from her past will come back and she will find out something new about George it will have Alf wondering dose she really no the man she loves. Alf really needs a vacation after this one.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I loved this one and think it is the best by far as it is a little more grittier than the others but it needed to be as Alf has to find her man doing what ever it takes. We find out some very interesting information about a couple of those from the Wonky Inn that makes you excited to see what else will happen as well as a surprise return of someone from Alfs past that you don't expect. I can not wait for the next book to see what happens to a couple of toads as well whether or not someone else stays in Alfs life!
When Alf discovers that someone has poisoned the water on her land she knows her enemy, the Mori, are to blame. Now she’s not only searching for her missing fiancé, running her inn and learning new magic from a dark witch, but she has to find a way to purify the water before everything in the Spotted Woods dies. Alf and her friends at the Wonky Inn are wonderful characters and the new additions fit in well. There was a lot of action in this story and some surprises too. I received an advance copy of this story and chose to leave my honest review.
A really enjoyable hour this is an easy read but a good easy read, colourful characters with a long goal. The characters are so good, drawing you into each story, there is a long reaching arc but it's not the by all, it's a very clever storyline, Jeannie Wycherley will refer back to something that happened 3 or 4 books back, that at the time meant little but now becomes a huge post of the story, it's exceptionally clever!
I highly recommend this book and indeed the series, i don't know why i overlooked it for so long, dig in, you won't be disappointed, well except for the envy you will feel at not having your own wonky inn clean up crew!!!
