Nephilim's Destiny #4

Destined Storm

Rate this book
Time is running out. But what will destroy them first? Secrets? Lies? Or magic?

I’m in trouble. Big trouble. A split-second reflex that saved Kol’s life, and all hell busted out. Rather, my secret busted out for all to see. Now the only thing keeping a lid on my wild, unpredictable magic is Cassius’s magical handcuffs. Kinky? Yeah, no.

I need to show Gideon, Marcus, Jacob, and Kol that my nephilim blood is the only thing I lied about, even if it means letting my memories be mined for the truth. Except when that soul-scraping spell comes up hard against an unbreakable magical wall, it reveals a secret that’s news even to me.

But finding the answers will have to wait. A new danger threatens the city. Three glyph witches so powerful every body-shredding battle leaves my guys barely alive.

We don’t know what the witches’ end game is, but if we don’t figure out how to play — and how to harness my magic — we’ll lose. And so will every innocent civilian we’ve sworn to protect.

Destined Storm is the fourth book in the Nephilim’s Destiny series, an action-packed full-length paranormal romance with four irresistible guys and a kick-ass heroine who doesn’t have to choose.

Her pain is exhausting!

Really, her pain is exhausting!

I know she is pain. Hell, the last three books were about her being in pain. But, a constant reminder of her being in pain on every single page, is damn bloody exhausting. I don't even feel sympathy for her anymore.

Also, her big secret

That also makes me wonder how people, especially Gideon, managed to hide their emotions from an empath. The very definition of an empath is that they can feel emotions that people don't show on thier face. But apparently, people manage to 'lock down' emotions that she then doesn't feel?

The entire witch thing is also very iffy. They completely forget (and so do the readers since it is not mentioned in this book) why they are following the witches in the first place. Also, one could... should wonder why they caught the witch at City hall in the first place. Oh, and what happened to super important zip drug problem in the city that killed so many supers and humans?

And, why the hell do they not have any extra personnel to help them in these life-or-death situations?? This is the fourth book with end-of-the-world scenario, and there are only four people managing it? Remember here, there are just as many paranormals running around as humans. So, what they don't commit enough crimes to need more than 4 people on the police?

Speaking of things that bothered me, others (and herself) blaming Essie for being the reason her partners get hurt and her being a liability, was not only misogynist and racist but also highly unbelievable. In the Marcus's case, he got hurt saving a child. Seriously, saving a child! And in Hank's case, he is the one who rushed in the room and she ended up saving him. So, how the hell is this her fault?? Especially, in a world where there are supernaturals.

Wrapping it up (because if I go in detail about every single thing wrong in this series, we will be here for a long time), the book is not badly written. But it is not great either. It could have done with a better beta read.

So, for the most part, I managed to enjoy the series up until book 3 despite the many plot holes and inconsistencies. But this book was a tipping point, where it became more irritating than fun. I am still going to read (or at least skim) book 5 because I have just come too far, but now it feels more like a chore.

Note - In the last book in the series,

Destined Storm started with a bang! It picked up right after the previous book's cliffhanger and it delivered on the Essie reveal. I loved loved loved the first few chapters and the consequences of Essie's identity becoming known and how much that affected everything. There was one twist regarding that that I didn't expect and I loved being caught off guard :D

The rest was a bit of a mess again lol The plot was once again a bit all over the place with the introduction of new characters--some who didn't even?? get names???--that were deemed important but then were totally discarded as soon as they did what they were supposed to do. Some of the characters were also back with making stupid decisions that put them in Very Obvious danger. Victoria's entire existence and the way the characters dealt with that was beyond!!! dumb!!!

We did get more progress in regard to the romance! More of the unresolved sexual tension was finally resolved \o/ but some of the aftermath scenes with certain characters being caught naked half a second before having sex were really odd and uncomfortable. Also!!! I was not here for my favorite, Kol, suffering. The last book better make him happy!!!

You know, sometimes I forget that these books literally take up like a two business-day time frame... EACH.

So in reality it’s been one hell of a week for these characters.
I mean damn... they can’t seem to catch a fucking break.

They’re like the epitome of puke and rally.
Seriously.
They have like two seconds to get their shit together and then it’s GO GO GO.

Worse than military school, I swear.
And I’m a civilian.

I realize in the span of one or two more days the series will be over so let’s hope they get their happily ever after the week that follows.. *eye roll*

Nonetheless, I’m enjoying their story.
STILL debating if Sebastian is in the team.
*squinting eyes* can’t see it from here anymore but we shall seeeee.

Onto the next day.. or who knows, maybe Tessa will surprise us and the next book will begin a week later when everyone’s had time to eat a fucking bagel or something.

This was a bit of a letdown for me. I can't discuss my biggest complaint without spoilers, so I'll save that for the end. It had many typos, and the author treated this more like it was the next chapter in the previous book than the start of a new book. For the life of me, I couldn't remember why everyone was chasing these witches in the first place. The plot was also pretty repetitive: injury, heal just enough, sex, heal just enough, sex, and repeat. I also thought the term "area containment master ward" was awkward and clunky, especially when it was used multiple times in a single sentence. There's also a strong sense that not much changes in these characters' mental states from the beginning of the book until the end, likely because the book spanned only a single day.

Here are my reviews and ratings of the other books in the series:
(1) Destined Darkness ★★★★
(2) Destined Blood ★★★
(3) Destined Fire ★★★

The following discussion involves a spoiler from the beginning of the book. Read ahead at your own risk.

So the past three books have been setting up massive amounts of tension regarding how everyone will react to Essie's status as a nephilim. This was a HUGE anticlimax in that regard. (1) 3 of the 4 guys accept her without hesitation, without even needing to discuss the situation with her. (2) Essie isn't even a nephilim after all. That probably wouldn't have bothered me, except it seems like a convenient way to solve her problems and the series name contains the word "nephilim."

Very disappointing

I really loved her other books. This one was so off that it took me weeks to try and get through this book. The main female character was a monster kicking machine when she started and now she’s a horny 16 year old who can’t even fight. I got so mad. This book felt rushed and diluted with unnecessary things.

to be completely honest I didn’t expect to like this series, but I’m really glad that I gave it a chance. my only complaint is that I wish the romance moves a little faster (it’s more of a slow burn in some cases)

Yes!

I'm happy with the way Essie's secret being revealed was handled even though I wanted to seriously kick Cassius's ass those first few chapters. It seemed Essie's secret even got revealed to herself. I'm glad she and Gideon finally got a moment. Now she has to get things worked out with Kol. Then there's Sebastian. I wonder if he'll be a part of the harem or if het get his own love interest. I sure hope Amiah gets someone for herself soon because can't be hers.

I'm wondering if Essie's birth mother is tied to those witches or if dealing with her will be something even worse than dealing with a goddess and her twitchy followers. It sure seems like Essie's birth mother will definitely be a problem soon. So glad the next book is out next month.

Down and Dirty

You NEED to read this series! Buy it! Check it out via KU - just read it.

Thoughts

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC (Advanced Reading Copy) of this book via Tessa Cole's Closed Reading Group on Facebook about a few days ago. Don't hate me! =)

Unlike some book series that seem to lose steam or their voice as the books stack, The Nephilim's Destiny Series is holding strong. Essie's secret is out and the repercussions shake the very foundation of everything her team believes - and leaves them all floundering. Where does she go from here? Can they ever trust her? What are the next steps?

The build up from the first three books leads to a very direct path in Book 4.... a path that Tessa flirts with, then veers away from. What you think is going to happen, doesn't. Instead, the story transforms and Essie is once again thrust into a situation she doesn't understand - and it's perfect. Fast moving and intense, Book 4 takes the characters and the reader for a ride and leaves us all gasping for Book 5 (March, 2019!).

Check out my review for Book 1 here!

Check out my review for Book 2 here!

Check out my review for Book 3 here!

Perspective:

First Person, Single POV

Ending Type:

Episodic with cliffhanger (though not as bad as Book 3's cliffhanger)

Pros:

Well Written.
Well Edited.
SHE HAS WINGS!
Character Growth.
Kol... still my favorite Incubus. I just want to hold that sexy demon and tell him everything is going to be ok.
The Characters are drawing closer, and their motivations are becoming clearer.
Book 4 is coming out in March 2019!

Cons:

Some parts are a bit confusing.
Book 4 isn't until March... lol.

Verdict

I have thoroughly enjoyed this series thus far, and I can't wait to read what happens next. I would recommend this to any Paranormal or RH fan.

Tessa Cole evidently suffers from the same misconception, that unfortunately plagues many authors. That there has to be a constant war/battle/problem to make the story interesting. And she's right, to a certain extent. A book where nothing is happening is a boring book. But that's doesn't mean there has to be a constant stream of action. Which is exactly what this series is made up of : Essie facing down some great evil in every book.

Literally, all the books in this series have the same plot, so you can understand why it gets repetitive and boring.

Essie is in some minor battle.
Essie gets injured, then has to be healed.
Essie has no clothes.
Essie is hungry and eats a sandwich (it's always a sandwich) which quickly becomes tasteless (despite her hunger) because she gets told some distressing news.
Essie now has an epic face off with some major enemy.
............. And repeat for every book.

Great book four! As fast paced and full of brushes with death as the rest of the series, picks up right where the last book left off, and happily doesn't go in the direction I'd expected it to. The guys support Essie through some shocking revelations. I honestly might go nuts from now until the release of book five in March, lol. The plot heats up, and Essie has some revelations about Also, Gideon (my fave) and Essie solidify their relationship, which is great! 5 stars. Just as much of an emotional rollercoaster as usual. I need book 5!

Good continuation to a good series

I’ve found all of these books to be really enjoyable. I’ve been especially looking forward to this one because the previous book’s cliffhanger was a doozy! Thankfully, not as bad of a cliffhanger at the end of this book, though there are definitely still a lot of unanswered questions. Can’t wait for book 5!

Any chance these books could have audio versions?

I like this books but

I really liked her book but I am tired of the author making the main character look so pathetic ! It really ruins the whole entire book especially since she is suppose to be a badass and strong.

Spoilers:
Like when she is on the roof top and Victoria the vampire attack’s her ... what does she do NOTHING ! She can’t fight her, can’t call on her power allows the vampire to bite her. The worst part is that she is suppose to be this super powerful supernatural and not only that but has years of experience being a cop and what does she do nothing !
It really frustrated me because I thought finally she is going to be able to save herself but no she has to be the damsel and have her guys come save her.

I really hope the author turns this around and allows more charter development on the main character and actually holds true to how she is trying to portray her.

""You'd be an idiot not to take her. If things get bad, take off the cuffs and point her in the right direction.""

Me desejem sorte.

Tough read

While the steamy scenes are present yay, everything and I mean EVERYTHING was rushed. This whole book took place in like 1-2 days. Finally the cat is out of the bag- how do you bond and not know what she is??? Anyway after a little prodding, oh it doesn't matter what you are, or that ou hid it for so long, but yay, you're not a nephilim. She has been hiding and dreading that secret for 3 books and the big reveal and reaction was super anticlimactic. Essie is so-called all powerful but this is not shown at all. Yes she has control issues since her magic was concealed, but she was a blubbering mess. Oh woe-is-me at every turn. She was actually pathetic and too much the damsel in distress. Her internal battles got old too. The plot actually made little sense too: Why were the glyph-witches killing everyone they could? They decided, out of the blue, to take up the mantle of the war from 20+ years ago. Why? No reason that was explained. This book, like the rest, kept giving you small snippets, about Essie's origins, but not enough to enthrall you. What is up with the Kol-dreaming too? That was the most frustrating. The guys were barely there for me, they blended in so much to the meh... unless intimacy was involved. Overall, still somewhat interesting, but this is book 4... and still dragging this out.

I've never written a review due to pacing in book but my dude. This book. This series. It's exhausting me just to read how these people never get a break, they never get to rest and recover, and I'm sorry, who's fault is that? The author's.

2-3 weeks between bk 1 and 2.
1 day between bk2 and 3?
1 second between bk 3 and 4?
Okay bk 3 ended on cliffhanger so that's fair enough. But then, instead of getting to rest and recover, attack by witches! In a big effort to kill an Ambassador (reason unclear why this Ambassador and why now), and in the end they saved mayor and the Ambassador was not mentioned at all. And what happened to zip dealers...? If it wasn't important to develop that storyline, then it wasn't important to even put it book 3 as major plot line (unless it was a tool to force Essie and Gideon to talk about their bond).

Not going into how it's impossible to actually develop relationship(s) on this kind of timeline, when time spent together can be counted in days, on one hand.

Last time I saw this kind of rushed events was Cassandra Palmer by Karen Chance, and that was at least quite a bit more enjoyable, with already perfectly fleshed out characters.

So while author might not want to give this group a break, I need one, to cleanse my palate. Debating if to read bk 5.

Please start giving some answers

I like this series, I really do but for the love of all that’s holy, quit dragging it out. We’ve had 4 books of the main character being deathly afraid of sharing her secrets. They only come out in some fantastic way and shock everyone. We get hints here and there but I would have thought by book 4 we’d get some solid answers. I understand why she’s afraid but come on, time to woman up and accept yourself the same way you accept all the shit the other characters dump on you. Just stand up for yourself!!! Please quit being a martyr, it’s exhausting. Get your answers, get justice. Book 5 had better have full bodied answers or I’ll be done with the series.
As a side note, I do appreciate the book a month. Some series take so long to develop that I have to reread the prior book to remember what happened. I believe the author is dedicated to her fans and this storyline by not making us wait so long. Thank you.

Ok I’ve mostly enjoyed this series so far but my main complaint about it is it is basically the same thing over and over and over and over again. -battle of bad guys. “Oh no my guys are hurt please don’t die” “oh no I’m hurt I’m going to die” steamy sex scene to heal everyone. Couple hours later battle bad guys “ oh no my guys are hurt really bad please don’t die” “oh no I’m hurt” steamy sex scene. Like change up the routine a little please. Also I have a problem with the time line. This entire book takes place in 24 hours and there is so many battles happening and recovering after near death battles. Just seems like way too much to honestly take place in the amount of time they say has gone by. Maybe 2 or 3 days would be more believable. And finally I feel like these men are suppose to be these bad ass agents who battle evil all the time. Yet almost every time they go out to fight one or more of them get extremely injured and almost dies. It’s all Just starting to bug me.

I gotta say, I really am enjoying this series. It's a nice, easy read and it's nice to finally see everyone (bar one) is getting along. I love the relationship progression in this book, but Kol is breaking my heart. There's always so much action going on in this series, that no one ever gets a moment to breathe. I feel like taking a moment is necessary. It's always "move, move, move" in this book. There's no time to really appreciate what they have going on. It's hard to think only a couple of weeks have passed, book time-wise, since the start of the series. I'm surprised they can get through so much in a day. I wish I had as many hours in my day as they seem to have in this series!

Anyway, I am enjoying it. I'd just like to see a moment of calm. There's always calm before a storm, amirite?

still amazing! book 4 and not bored yet.

plot:
in this one there are witches that are up to something. They attack and she cass is hit by magic and put into a coma.
they are attached again in the building and a time spell is put on everyone else.
cole will not speak with her because of his past trauma
and gideon and her need to finish their bond but can never seem to find time
victoria attacks and almost kills her because she is pissed about jacob.
they figure out she is a full angel when she gives sebastian all her power to save her guys
she is scared of her power and uses bracelets to hold it back, but when she finishes her bond with gideon those break.
they kill the witches and save the mayor, but its not over. and her mother is also an angel and apparently looking for her.

she now has 3 mates, things are rough with cole, she is a full angel with tons of power,
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Things were not what they seemed, and what feels a bit like a cop-out was taken to avoid a mess that was built to be insurmountable.

Destined Storm was very much a continuation of Destined Fire, like the conclusion of a small two-parter contained inside a bigger series.

There were lots of brushes with death (again), lots of pain and suffering (again), lots of angst (again), lots of emotional turmoil (again)... You get the gist.

Now, I'm guessing a demonic (or arch-demonic) mommy dearest will get revealed? I liked this series better when we got one villain that had to be defeated per book.

On the positive side, these books are so short and SO fast-paced I have no time to get bored at any point!

Sighhh I loved the first 3 books so much but this one was such a let down in comparison. Far too much nonstop/repetitive action with not enough focus on the characters themselves. It was literally “action, everyone is drained, replenish energy, action, everyone is drained again....” over and over, again and again. I wanted more time spent on delving into Essie’s relationships with the guys, especially after the massive cliffhanger at the end of book 3. I felt like I was cheated out of that emotional depth in this book in favour of some endless cheap action.

Way too much exposition

By book four her harem should be well established. I'm tired of the dancing around each other. I'm also tired of reading the same battle scenes over and over. Someone attacks. Essie has to jump in to rescue everyone. But she doubts herself and almost gets everyone killed. Somehow she manages to pull it off in the end. The guys lecture her. And it all begins again with a new attack. Honestly, about 75% of this entire series is unnecessary exposition. I think I'm done with this series.

Great series

I have really enjoyed each book in the series and luckily the author does not take too long to send out new books in the series. I am happy the harem is starting to come to a completion. But there is one maybe two characters that I am wondering will be included in the harem, in the next book. Also, Essie's back story is somewhat revealed and it was unexpected. Books must be read in order. Enjoy!

Holy plot twists!

Holy plot twists! I need to sleep lol But these books are consuming me, I think my kids are about to start a revolt from being ignored and I need to go grocery shopping but but but there's still another book! Ester and her guys have taken over my life and I don't have the willpower to stop reading. Seriously guys, this series is epic and I highly recommend it but not if you have auditing to do anytime soon. See ya on the flip side.

I absolutely loved this series. Essie was seriously Kicka@@ and though it took a bit longer to warm up to one or two of the guys, by this final book, I was as in love with them as she was.

With a truly epic final big bad as well as some equally terrifying other enemies and revelations along the way, this is a series i will be happy to recomend to anyone looking for an engaging, mysterious, action packed and funny paranormal RH.

Well. Yet again danger is right around the corner as always. It's like they never get a break. But that's part of being a JP agent. As he's power is continuously going whackers. Three crazy witches wanted to continue on with the war. But the JP team is not going to let that happen even if that means they all die.
But yet they manage even though it's hard for all of them. By the end of it they come out victorious. Essie and Gideon finally so they're Bond.

Good twist

Essie's big reveal about her status went pretty much how she thought it would go however it had quite a twist.

I love how her mates stuck with her and I could empathize with her pain when Kol tried to kill her. This is a great reverse harem and I am looking forward to the next one.
