I'm the husband to an incredible wife and the daddy to five amazing girls! I spent ten years serving as a children's pastor. Then, I worked as a marriage and family therapist, psychology professor, writing coach, and author.
Today, I've published 23 books. I enjoy helping others elevate their life and leadership through speaking and Christian life-coaching. In my free time, you'll find me reading, preparing for an upcoming marathon, barbecuing, paddle boarding, and enjoying life with our incredible family.
As a dedicated writer, this book is in the only genre of non-fiction that can keep my interest for longer than five minutes. Coupled with Jurchenko’s engaging, friendly, and honest voice, it was an hour well spent!
This book tackles a number of problems which every writer deals with; self-depreciation, writer’s block, fear of failure, feelings of inadequacy, etc. All of which, for every writer, is unavoidable at some point or another in their journey. As he says, “A dark cloud will descend upon you, and writing will be more difficult than wading through a pool full of cold, sticky maple syrup.” (As a Canadian, this was just so relatable to me on a personal level, you know?) In his book, Jurchenko turns each of these problems around with ten simple steps that will leave your spirit lifted and will keep you writing through even the darkest times.
Probably my favourite concept was the that of turtle writing. “Slow and steady wins the race” is one of the mottoes that I’ve always related to my own writing, and it was refreshing to see someone teaching that as OK and even a preferable way to write.
I firmly believe the concepts in this book will enrich my writing journey further and help me to become an even better writer than I am today.
That said, I did have some disagreements with this book:
One, I disagree that shorter books are better. Perhaps on a case by case basis with non-fiction, but fiction is an entirely different case. Most fiction readers I’ve met actually prefer /longer/ books. My 105,000 word novel has had complaints that it was too short for it’s genre as it was. If I followed the advice given in this book, it would have to be split into four different books, and that would not only ruin the flow, but go against the rule of fiction that each book must be it’s own complete story. I’m not sure if this is what Jurchenko meant, but I believe it needed to be clarified for fiction specifically.
Two, part of the subtitle says it will help you get published, but the book doesn’t cover this? It helps you get over the idea that you won’t be good enough to be published, but the book never tells you how to publish your book. I think the subtitle in that respect is misleading, and therefor the book would be unfulfilling to someone who reads it for that promise.
And three, I disagreed that writing should be about publishing faster. For me, writing has always been about /passion/ and if a writer doesn’t have passion to begin with, maybe that’s why so many fail? If you’re writing with passion, and if you keep to that passion throughout the process, it doesn’t matter how long it takes you to finish, does it?
Also, it was a little difficult to keep track of where we were at times because the steps weren’t numbered at all. But that’s just a mild complaint.
In conclusion, I think the book is very good for writers who are distracted, lacking motivation, or caught in a spiral of self-depreciation. It will help you get back up on your feet and do what writers do: write!

Looking to be a successful writer? If you want to start writing, get back your writing, or take what you’ve written and refine it, here’s a big step forward. It’s written by someone who’s published many successful books in a number of different genres. The book was surprisingly quick to read for the value it brought me. Ideas, motivation, advice. It’s super-practical and resonated deeply with the writer in me. I knew some of this in theory, but it was constructive indeed to see it reframed. And there was a good deal I hadn’t really thought about. It’s a great little book that has re-inspired and re-grounded me and given me a whole new take into the bargain.
I love the turtle analogy and the comparison to the famous "The Tortoise and the Hare" story. It fits. The turtle is persistent. The turtle gets it done and crosses the finish line--every time. I want to be the turtle!
This is a great motivational book to help you get unstuck and get back on track. Even though it's geared toward writers and has great tips that seem so simple, when applied to any area of life (not just writing) they are very powerful! Read this book and you'll finish your book-- or whatever herculean goal you may have.
This quick read was filled with the kind of wisdom and advice that comes from an experienced author who truly understands his craft. Clearly, he wants to help other writers find success. It inspires and informs. The section about “embracing turtle power” resonated with me. I also appreciated the insight he offers in the Bonus — on whether it I possible to write a book in a weekend, as some claim. I look forward to the author’s next book.
I recommend this book to anyone who longs to write but never seems to have enough time to do so! This book is a quick read (I read it in 30 mins) but it motivated me to write more in the last 2 weeks than I have in months! It's got great, simple strategies that you can begin implementing straight away. I highly recommend it!
This is a quick read, I finished it in one setting. Useful for aspiring authors, but I think the principles described can be useful in other areas as well. This is not a book that focuses on the actual craft of worrying. Its main aim is to inspire authors of both fiction and non-fiction to get their ass in gear and start writing.
I loved this book! As a writer, I appreciated this quick and succinct guide on how to get your book written quickly and efficiently. This was an easy read with lots of good tips that I will be using on my next writing project. Thanks!
