The Patchwork Quilt: A Book for Children About Dissociative Identity Disorder

Rate this book
A way to talk to kids about D.I.D.s (Dissociative Identity Disorder)

Conversations about mental health can be difficult.  The Patchwork Quilt is a picture book designed to help those with D.I.D. - Dissociative Identity Disorder (previously known as multiple personality disorder) talk about the condition.  It is a great starting point for explaining this complex psychological condition to children (or to young alters).

This colorfully illustrated narrative story introduces DID to children in a serious, but whimsical way.  The Patchwork Quilt addresses;

DID’s formation out of traumaThe concept of parts (or alters)Emotional issues such as; anger, fear, depression, self-worthThe positive outcome of internal communication & cooperationDissociative identity disorder is a complex condition and by its nature highly personal.  This story is meant to be open to interpretation.   Some people are working towards integration; others are working towards being a functional system.  This book is not a judgement on or endorsement of any method of healing. It was written to be a starting point for open discussion of DID with children.

Disassociative Identity Disorder (previously known as Multiple Personality) is a much maligned disorder. Media constantly portrays sufferers as somehow irretrievably broken (and often dangerous/untrustworthy to boot). This book does not.

If you or a family member have been diagnosed with D.I.D. this book is perfect for explaining the true nature of DID in a gentle, beautiful way. One which doesn't overload the reader with facts or scare them by dwelling on how DID comes about.

By comparing the person with DID to a blanket that is torn and then repaired this book concentrates on the fact that the person the reader knows is changing but changing for the better and that better will still be at heart the same person who loves them.

The pictures are wonderful.

A must read for any child who has a relation with D.I.D.

Highly informative about a very serious emotional disorder. Done with tenderness, compassion and brilliantly explained.
For those with this disorder, great book for littles, very hopeful and tender without triggers and a safe informative read.

My husband Grantley Morris, has written extensive webpages about DID and was also very impressed. Therapists could use this book to reach people with DID.

Beautiful tool to explain DID to children

I needed a way to explain a friend’s MPD / DID to my daughter, who wanted to get to know them, too. This beautiful book explains how it works and why it happens in such an easy way to understand. Its sweetness softens the cause of the disorder. Everything is clear and detailed enough for kids to get and move forward with a relationship in confidence.
Really great book for kids. Highly recommend it.

best explanation I’ve found

Thank you for the kind and thoughtful interpretation of DID. We are a system of 17 and have two biological children. We hide this part of mommy. This is an excellent book. We will be purchasing a hard copy. Thank you KU for the advance opportunity to read

Brilliant & Informative

As someone with DID, I think this book is a wonderful resource. It is sensitive, clear, and completely without stigma! I would recommend sharing it with anyone who needs an introduction to what DID is.

So sweet

I used this book to help explain to my kids what DID is and how it works and the explanation along with the pictures made it much easier for them to understand.

What a creative way to make a difficult issue more understandable. I think it would be a good book for adults new to the subject as well.

Great job!

EDITED 7/3/21

Okay I had to come back and re-review this. When I first got this book it was back in 2019, at the time I was under the impression I could never have kids, so the book was bought for myself. To support an author that wrote a children's book about living with DID. In November of 2020 I had my rainbow, and we read this to her constantly. It's a touchy subject and not always the conversation you want to have with children, but for parents with DID who don't choose to mask (both are valid, it just depends on how your system wants to do it) this is a fantastic way to explain it. I've also given the book to family to help them understand as well.
