"Ultimately, the outcome of her gamble would determine how history remembered her: brave or selfish. Loved or hated."

A great sequel to Vortex Visions. Chosen Champion took us on an adventure - a chase across the main continent all the way to a small ship on wild seas. In therms of plot, this second book was a bit more adventurous and fast paced, but for me, I preferred Vortex Visions because there was something more mysterious about the storyline there, while this book sometimes felt like getting from this destination (point A) to the final destination (point B). It sometimes felt like an in-between book, especially in the second half. Overall I had fun with it and the plot was at parts very gripping. Excited for the sequel!

"She never thought she could give up her life while still breathing."
HOLY. SOLARIS.
My mind is still reeling from what I just read so I hope this all makes sense.
This is the sequel to Vortex Visions, a spin off series that follows Vhalla's daughter.
The first half of this book had a slow pace but it was definitely important in leading us into the second half... which is another matter entirely. It was so intense that I barely remembered to blink. It was painful but I didn't mind since I had to devour the words as fast as I could. That second half completely blew my mind away!! I have so many unanswered questions that I am losing my mind just thinking about how much longer I have to wait for book 3!
I still can't believe how absolutely addicted I am to every Elise Kova book I read. As soon as I started this book, I was immediately transported into a world so vibrant, that I forgot I wasn't actually in it. My surroundings faded away until the only thing I could see was what Vi saw in front of her; One second I was reading the first word of the first chapter and then the next I was over 50% done. I have no idea where time went but this book stole it from me and I am  not mad about it.
The last few pages had my heart in my throat and I NEED MORE, ASAP!!!! My heart is still beating so fast from it all. Elise assaulted me with curve balls and badassery that I didn't know I was begging for until I saw them play out in front of me. My god!!! Vi is so badass that I can't even handle it. I love her to death and I can't wait to see what else she does to shatter my soul in the next book! This story gets even more intense with every installment and I am nervous to see what awaits me in the near future.

I was sent this book as an advanced copy by the author for reviewing purposes, but all opinions are my own.

I really enjoyed this second installment of the Vortex Chronicles series, and let me just say once again that I keep being so impressed with Elise Kova's ability to come out with one high fantasy novel every three months. That's such an incredible pace and a blessing for us readers that don't have to wait long before reading the next book. I just want to put this out there if she ever reads this that I also hope she's eating and staying hydrated and getting enough sunlight!!!

Anyway speaking of the book itself, as I said I really liked it. It became in the second part more of a travel trope (which I love) and that way we also got to meet some more familiar faces from the Air Awakens series. As well as a few surprises and plot twists which you might or might have not seen coming.

There were a few (maybe spoilery so I won't mention them) reunions I had been waiting for since the previous books and AAAAAAHHH I am both soft and a ball of angst. Not much I can actually say without spoiling a lot since this is a second book but I was just very happy with pretty much everything. I still continue to not care much about the romance itself but I'm waiting to see how it'll develop later, but that's pretty much my only reason for a 4 stars. I'm looking forward to the third book!

I loved the expansion of the Air Awakens world that Kova has created. It began nicely in Vortex Visions as we explore Vi Solaris' world of the North, but throughout Chosen Champion that world is deepened and fleshed out in ways that newly expand this world in ways we never saw in Air Awakens. I loved Vi's journey into places familiar like the Crossroads as well as Lord Erion's home in the West. It was so cool getting to experience what was hinted at in terms of the Le Dan wealth and seeing the estate and more. But I digress.

I was left loving Vi but feeling like her friends were a bit "flat" in Vortex Visions. Well, Kova grows and deepens Vi's guard, Jayme, in ways that you'd never imagine and that propel the story forward. I could not have anticipated one particular turning point involving her. I won't spoil it by saying more, but it was nice to have something so unexpected happen.

I also loved how Kova deepened the relationship between Vi and Taaven. I cannot wait to see what happens between them next.

Long story short, I anxiously await the third book in this series!!!

Chosen Champion was easy to get through--once I started, I didn't stop, and it went by fairly fast--so it is a step up from Vortex Visions in that I didn't feel there was a point where I had wavering focus.

But I do come out of it feeling like the story wasn't quite balanced.

For a story seeking this larger-than-life plot, it somehow feels unbalanced and at times very empty, as there's not even a lot of character introspection or interpersonal relationships to work off of. I'd anticipated the sea-faring and meeting of Taavin to occupy more of the story, for Vi reuniting with her mother and brother to really establish and elaborate upon their bonds, yet only the final seven chapters had anything to do with the journey from the Solaris Empire/the Dark Isle to Meru and literally the last 3 pages have them miraculously meet when Vi washes on shore and there he is.

In Air Awakens, I though the development of the plot was much better, but here... several things I wanted to be developed more were speed through quickly--Vi's time with her family, being on the sea...

Even her relationship with Taavin becoming clearly romantic, it just felt a little too soon, a little too unsupported by what was given to use in the text. Vi knows so little of Taavin--I feel like while his affections may have been secured early on because he's lonelier and has had visions of Vi for a long time, I didn't feel there was the same level of justification for Vi to so quickly want to kiss Taavin. Romance is the often the most important thing for me in a book, so I care a lot about its implementation.

I'm hopeful book #3 is a better candidate for the relationship between these two now that they're together in the same place physically. I want to know the two character intimately and see them interact and grow and see real reasoning for the way they are with each other.

I know it might be a pain to hear me reference back to the other series, as Vortex Visions was designed to be something that could be read on its own while still functioning as a sequel series, but it's just difficult to not when things the author nailed before are things she isn't. And, again, that isn't me holding some bias just because I read and liked Air Awakens first. I don't hold anything against Vortex Visions for being the 2nd series I read, for being the sequel.

A fear I had going into this series was that Vhalla and Aldrick would suddenly be terrible people because of a need for conflict/drama/whatever (sequel series focusing on the kids of the former protagonists have burned me before) but so far, they don't seem to have had their characters assassinated, which I'm glad for. In fact, their parts are kept quite in the background as Vi's parents and as the sovereigns of the empire.

Not what I expected, but not bad, either. Sort of a middling book. Onward to book #3!

Also, I do want to say that I was given a free ebook omnibus of all five books in this series for the purposes of review by the author, but my thoughts remain wholly my own. The only stipulation (and it was flexible, should circumstances pop up to prevent it) put on me and that I agreed to post my reviews by a certain time. Very standard stuff for review copies.

I had some problems with this book.

The first thing that failed me was the romance.
I almost wish there wasn’t any, and that’s a big thing to say for someone like me who wants her books with it, even if it’s just a hint. It was very rushed and not credible. I really couldn’t buy into it. The relationship between the main pair went from distrust to love so fast I don’t even remember when they began to fall for each other, or most importantly, why. They jumped from barely talking and keeping basic information from each other to blushing and touching, quickly followed by kissing and declaring their eternal love. Wtf. Zero real development.

The second thing that failed me was the rhythm. Until the book reached the 65% mark I was just barely interested.

And, as the final problem, the characters. They weren’t bad, but not good either. Therefore, if the romance is bland, and the characters and their relationships are just… meh, my two “most important things I need in books” are gone.

Taavin, the male lead, was interesting in Vortex Visions, but I found myself frustrated by the lack of basic information he and Vi didn't share. We barely learn anything about him until the middle of this book, and I mean, BASIC THINGS. I don’t even know how they were able to fall in love, I swear I don’t understand.

Also, it’s like the first two books are a loooooooooong as fuck introduction, but now that the story begins I can’t really find the interest to continue. Maybe Elise Kova it’s not for me.

What a great second book to the series and all of the adventures that Vi must complete in order to save the world.

Enjoyable and written perfectly with all of the anticipation building to the climax of the story.

I was not expecting that ending which only excites me more for the next book in the series.

Wow, how do you put into words how you feel about a series that just keep exploding and surprising you. You attempt to articulate a review that makes sense without giving away the whole story, ok ready here goes.

This is the second book in the Air Awakens spin-off Vortex Visions that follows the adventures of the daughter of Valla. Now for me, you really should read Air Awakens first but it not necessary you just get more invested in these characters if you do. So if you want more inclusion go pick those up and come back.

Their not a lot of world building included in this book two so the story is more driven by the characters. Wow, have these characters got grit I was completely blown away by the amount of grit by the time I got done. What I thought I knew what not what was true so try and guard your heart cause your in for some turmoil.

We meet Via brother Romulan but we don’t see him a lot. The real meat of the story focuses on Vi and her quest and her odd relationship of sorts with the mysterious Taavin. Vi is to return home to be crowned queen, the land is ravaged by a white disease and her father is presumed dead. Though she was pretty sure that not the case so as to result she runs off hell-bent on bringing him and a cure home.

All hell breaks loose in the last few chapters and that where the real excitement happens to the point where I was flying through the pages not quite comprehending how everything unravels and an unexpected savior arrives on the stage at the very end.

You are in for a treat Elise has created a well thought out devious plot that will keep you guessing and shocked every step of the way. Ready for more story lets do this.

Spoiler free for Chosen Champion but Spoilers ahead for Vortex Visions!

Also – I was provided with an e-arc of this book in exchange for an honest review. Thank you thank you to Elise Kova for the opportunity and I’m so excited to share my thoughts! I am HORRIBLE at reviewing sequels of series so BEAR WITH ME:

This is book two in Elise’s continuation/companion series to Air Awakens. I highly recommend the Air Awakens series & reading it before this next installment. Vortex Visions was an amazing opening and expansion to the world fans already know, and Chosen Champion continues to do that.

There wasn’t a whole lot more world-building in this book from the Vortex, so don’t look for too much more reveals about the world just yet, though the way this book ends I think some more will be coming as we explore a completely new setting. And I don’t say the lack of world building is a negative thing – it just happens to work that this installment is more character and plot driven. Vi is now traveling through her lands, re-uniting with her mother and brother after Vi’s father, King Aldrik, is presumed dead. Vi is to go home and be crowned Queen. However, she is determined to find her father, as she strongly believes he is alive based on her visions, and now with a new revelation about her mother Vhalla, Vi is as determined as ever to save her father and her people.

Her and Jayme leave without notice to get a boat to sail to Meru. Along the way, some old friends come along, some truths are revealed about characters, and there’s ooof sooo many plot twists and back stabbing. We get some insights and reveals about a character from the Air Awakens series (AND IT BROKE MY HEART SO THANKS FOR THAT ELISE), which honestly threw me for a spin. I messaged someone else who’d finished Chosen Champion before me, screaming about the reveal. Fans of the AA series will be screaming with me I think once y’all read it.

I think Elise is doing a fantastic job spreading out this story between however many books she’s writing. She gives us enough to keep us intrigued and leaves us hanging at the end. It’s genius, and I like that we only have to wait months between books rather than years. So we’re given just enough of the story, and a GOOD story with action, adventure, and plot twists that keeps us moving. It did feel a tad bit too fast paced this time around, but again I think the content that was given was good enough for this next installment.

As I said, this book was very character driven. We get to meet Vi’s twin brother Romulin (and honestly I wished we got to see more of him! I’m SAD), a pirate queen of sorts Adela (ALSO. MORE INFO PLEASE though I’m sure it’s coming), and some characters return. We also have the return of the swooning Taavin, whom I love. Vi’s and Taavin’s relationship grows even more in this book, and I kind of wish their relationship had been drawn out more. I’m a fan of slow burns. Nevertheless, I still ship it so hard. The very end of this book had me (side eye emoji) and wow I just…I need book three already.

Chosen Champion ended with some BIG THINGS. Things that honestly made my heart hurt for certain characters (both in this novel and ones only mentioned). It was one hell of an ending, with a LOT of action, and I have SOOO many questions.

I hope fans of this next installment of the Vortex Chronicles are going to love it as much as I did, and eagerly await the next book. Elise writes a fantastic and unique fantasy story here. I highly suggest again, reading the Air Awakens series and discovering the Vortex Chronicles.

This book publishes in a couple of weeks so pre-order your copy today!

I definitely enjoyed this more than the first book! As I had hoped, there is a lot of character and story development and I am really excited to read the next book! The last quarter was especially exciting and although I guessed the twist, it was still brilliant and lead to a fab ending!
What I love about Elise Kova's writing is that I can always visualise exactly what is going on. I have a picture of all the characters and scenes in my head and that is hard for writers to do consistently through books.
I now have high hopes for the rest of the series!

welcome to this year’s second edition of ELISE KOVA IS AN AMAZING FANTASY WRITER AND SHE DESERVES MORE ATTENTION, SHE’S LITERALLY PUSHING OUT APPROXIMATELY THREE BOOKS A YEAR FOR Y’ALL TO OVERLOOK HER WORK LIKE THIS???

truly, Elise Kova never ceases to amaze me. she writes unapologetically, and you can tell from MILES away that she cares deeply for her characters and the stories she chooses to tell. the world of Air Awakens keeps expanding and expanding, and each book just keeps getting better and better. I won’t say much about Chosen Champion since it’s pretty much the seventh (?) book in the series and obviously everything I say is a potential spoiler, but I just want everybody to know that Elise Kova is worth it. reading underrated books is WORTH IT. (don’t be scared to pick up books just because they have 200 ratings instead of 20,000!! read whatever you want!!!) I’ll literally never rest until her books get the recognition they deserve, she’s insanely talented and I’ll forever be in complete awe at her abilities as a writer.

thank you Elise for being the true MVP and writing because you love it and not for the paycheck. Air Awakens is genuinely one of my favorite fantasy series in the entire world, and I can’t wait to see what she has in store next for the characters!! take me awayyyy!!!!!!

I received an e-ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review. Review can be found on *Milky Way of Books*

Chosen champion was a sequel worthy of its characters and full of unstoppable movemtn and action. As Vi tries to find a way to reachTaavin, the danger of the epidemic of the White Death spreads and no one is safe anymore. There are many twists and turns in this book with mysyteries and prophecies that may or may not come true.

I also fear that Taavin knows that either he or Vi will dies but I can't confirm it. I hope for the best. There is a plot twist I didn't see it coming and a cliffhanger that made me demand more! I seriously can't wait for the final (?) book in the series!

I was so tense the entire time I was reading this . . . it was just so incredibly intense, both the story and the emotions, and there was no way I could have predicted that ending. No way. My ship is still sailing (and then some!) which makes me really happy, but wow, what a cliffhanger after a whole lot of crazy at the end! I knew I'd need book three right away, but literally, I need it this very moment. I don't think I'm going to get any sleep worrying about this girl and the predicament (to put it mildly) she's in.

description
Chosen Champion is wonderful!! A feeling of wonder never left me all through reading this book.
While Vortex Vision re-introduced/remade the Air Awakens World, Chosen Champion is a brilliant and dashing adventure that kept me turning the pages eagerly.
Continuing from where the previous book left off, Crown Princess Vi is still working on her magic with her fated companion Taavin while working hard to figure out the location of the next Apex to explore.
The fate of the world still hangs in balance as the Dark God increases in strength, and the White Death spreads across the Solaris empire swiftly.
Elise Kova brilliantly made the tone of this book fun and fast paced despite the very heavy things thee characters have to deal with.
Vi's journey leads her to a nice yet awkward reunion to her mother (My dear Vhalla!!) and her twin brother (Who I love so dearly, especially his relationship with Andru!).
Desperate to save her father and hopefully put an end to the White Death, Vi flees from her family and their army.
On the way to Meru with the steadfast Jayme to find her father and meet Taavin, Vi gets a lot more than she bargained for!.
A thrilling adventure involving many interesting characters, both new and old, learning of many dangerous secrets, a treacherous journey at sea and a grand betrayal.
The ending has me looking forward to what's next, it's not particularly cliffy but it'll certainly keep you thirsting for book 3.
With Chosen Champion, Elise Kova has yet again impressed with her vivid imagination and sense of adventure and the characters transcends their bounds into something unknown.

P.S: Vi and Taavin keep getting cuter! Like I am so loving their journey towards each other.

I LIKED THE BEGINNING AND THE END.

BLOG || INSTAGRAM

But what happened in the middle? Nothing. That’s what happened.

Started off strong with Vi getting to FINALLY see her family again, YAY. I was so excited to see Vhalla and her brother Romulin. I was mostly on bored with Vi’s decision to leave her family so she can save her nation, but when she started that journey I got lost in the bogged down story.

I didn’t think it was going to take the ENTIRE book to get Vi from one place to the other. There was a lot of time spent with her travelling with Jayme and finding a ship, getting to the other continent, etc. I could have done with half of that cut out and actually getting her real story started (which is what I’m hoping book three will give me).

Still working on being a total shipper of Taavin and Vi. They’re not the enemies to lovers store that Vhalla and Aldrik had and there’s been a lot less barriers to a relationship between them so I haven’t felt the tension that I love in a romance. Now that I’ll get to see them in the same location I’m hopeful that I will love them.

Definitely had a moment where I yelled CALLED IT (and I had been calling it from book one). What a twisted moment that was when all heck literally broke loose. Got to see Vi break out of her shell, use her magic, and destroy some things. IT WAS AWESOME.

Don’t worry. I’ll keep reading this series. This book may have read like a true middle book unfortunately, but I love Elise Kova’s writing too much to not keep going.

Overall audience notes:
- Young adult fantasy romance
- Language: very little
- Romance: some kisses
- Violence: physical, magic, ship wrecks, plague sickness

While I really liked Vi and her overall development, I found the first 60% of the book very, very slow. However, once you hit the 85% mark it speeds up like CRAZY!!! A betrayal and badass Vi were the highlights of the book, and because of the action-packed finale I will definitely read on to the next.

In terms of the romance, I would've liked to have seen the dynamic between Taavin and Vi be drawn out a lot longer. I feel like they got together pretty quickly and I'm curious if the sexual tension will be kept up in the future books...Otherwise, I think it feels a bit anticlimactic.

One last lingering, spoilery thought:

THE TWISTS.
THE TURNS.
THE REVELATIONS.
THE BETRAYAL.

Woah, I am the first book went easy on me BUT THIS TOOK THE SERIES IN A DIRECTION I DIDN'T SEE COMING.

It feels a lot more connected to the original series from this point. While the vibe of it all is different, if you didn't enjoy the first book because it felt distant from the series, I'd recommend giving this one a chance.

I have no idea what to expect next, but I'm here for all of it!

Back in January when I finished reading Vortex Visions I was very impressed with this first book in the Air Awakens sequel series. I knew then that I would see this story to its end so picking up Chosen Champion was a no-brainer.

Once again, Elise Kova easily draws you back into the world. It's everything familiar and beloved. The atmosphere really comes through in Elise's writing. With the White Death still looming and spreading over the Empire we feel just how dire the situation is becoming. And that burden falls more heavily on our heroine's shoulder than ever.

We follow Vi as she sets down a path of no return. It's a harrowing journey but our crown princess is sneaky and resourceful. Despite conflicts with loved ones and coming face to face with unknown dangers, unthinkable truths and a devastating betrayal she soldiered on bravely. I'm pleased to be able to witness Vi's growth. I hope to see much more of it!

My one main problem with Chosen Champion is the pacing. The majority of the book felt like a long wait for something big to happen. We see nothing significant occur plot-wise until the last quarter of the book. Not that I didn't like developments but the buildup just took a little too long to fully enjoy.

The romance has a more prominent role in Chosen Champion than it had in book one. While Vi and Taavin's feelings were very new to them, both recognized the strength it gave them. It was an important driving force for how they act and reacted. The distance between them intensified their connection making every stolen moment precious. It's not an expressly forbidden love but it will be interesting to see where their relationship will take them.

So Elise has already released the title of the next book: Failed Future. It doesn't sound great but I sure as heck am going to find out exactly what it means!

I think this may be the best book I've read by Elise Kova (and I've read all of her books... soooo... I'm a bit of an expert). In book 2 of Air Awakens: Vortex Visions, Vi makes the decision to leave the family she's always wanted and find Taavin, fulfilling her destiny to save the world from the malevolent forces converging in the mysteries northern continent. CHOSEN CHAMPION follows Vi's struggles to make the decision, traverse the empire, and travel to Meru, making friends and enemies along the way.

Vi comes into her own in this one. In VORTEX VISIONS, her character was a little scattered, trying to piece together who she truly was and attain an identity. CHOSEN CHAMPION finds Vi growing and taking responsibility for her actions, truly accepting her role in the chaos of her situation. I adored her conviction and levelheadedness. Vi makes a decision and sticks with it; she is logical, if a little naive. As her struggles continue, I'm intrigued to see how her character will continue to change and mature.

There was also this delicious undercurrent of unease that I felt brewing in VORTEX VISIONS that carried through CHOSEN CHAMPION. I guessed of the eventual betrayal, but I just didn't want it to happen, not to poor Vi! When the betrayal occurs (and a huge revelation happens!!!), it breaks your heart because it breaks Vi's heart. Vi's breakdown was powerful, written beautifully, and forces you to pause and breathe... it was intense.

The plot was very simple, encompassing mostly travel. However, it was not lacking in action and the simplicity let the characters shine. I can't wait to discover what Kova has planned for this completely new world on Meru. That map has *seriously* expanded and I'm soooo excited.

In just a few words: I loved it, it was amazing, I can't wait for FAILED FUTURE (book 3).

Oh Elise Kova, you have done it again. Another wild ride with more twists and turns than I can count.

If you read and loved the Air Awakens series be prepared for many Easter eggs throughout the Vortex Visions series, locations, people, and etc make their way into each book.

Vi is very much like her mother Vhalla, and also very much like her father, Aldrik. She's as stubborn as them. She makes hasty decisions like them and she is strong like them. I'm loving where her character development is going!

As Vi's story continues we see old friends from Air Awakens, we meet new enemies, and we discover new locations. Vi's adventure is already full of betrayal and despite being thrown through the ringer she is not losing her fight and I love that about her character. The new magic Lightspinning is so cool! I already thought the magic in Air Awakens was cool but this new magic is so much more interesting!

My gratitude to the author for the early copy!

Her father had told her once to always keep her eyes on her greater goal; never risk losing the war to win a battle.

This is a transition novel. The goal of it is to move Vi from the empire to the crescent continent. I was hoping she would get here a little sooner but the book end with her finally getting to the crescent continent. I think I’ll enjoy book 3 more, this one was a get there already book.

I really like Vi. Taavin gets more development in this one too. It was nice to see news from characters from Air Awakens.

I’m ready for book 3.

The second book in the series is more interesting, and things are finally sturring up. Vi is determined to find her father as she knows that Emperor Aldrik lives no matter what they say. She successfully established a new level of her rare magic with Taavin's help and is ready to leave her home, once again, to take a dangerous trip.

I finally can see that Vi is growing from a boring princess to a pretty amazing heroine. The book ending was smashing! I think that the rest of the series certainly will be more intense.

My Queen of Plot Twists crown has been stolen from my clutches by a worthy adversary. I can’t even fathom what the fuck just happened.
What an incredible read!!!! Elise Kova has really outdone herself with twists and drama and EMOTION. I felt that kick to the gut pretty damn hard.
I need more. I need more NOW.

Yep, this second installment in the Vortext Chronicles series takes off and gears up for more action and intrigue, betrayal and adventure. I’m still having a bit of trouble with Vi. She hasn’t gotten over her pampered princess attitude throughout much of the story but she is growing and maturing... I think.

Is it possible that I am enjoying this more than Air Awakens??? The writing feels more mature and Vi also feels very mature compared to Vhalla, the stakes are SO high, the expansion of the world and lore, cultures, and different races are growing too, I can’t wait to see where these next 3 books lead.

"We will write our own fate,"

This was an excellent second book for this series. It was awesome to see old places and familiar people through new eyes. The first book gave us a unique view o the North. A view of a newly conquered nation. The nation that Vi grew up in, the one that shaped her. Seeing the rest of the world through her eyes was completely different from what Vhalla saw in her time.
Vi's character grew so much from the first time we met her. She learned of the world around her and how she would not always be treated like she was used to. Not everyone would love the crown princess.
It was great to finally meet her family and once again be graced by the presence of Vhalla Yharl. Romulin was an interesting character. I felt like I slightly knew him through Vi, Andru, and his letters.
I liked getting more of Jayme’s character. I think the first book focused more on Vi and Ellene, and I loved how much development Jayme got.
I love all the places this book went. Both physically through Vi's travels and where it went emotionally. Some of the twists were predictable but written so well they still hit home. I never knew something I guessed so early on could still make me cry.
There is so much I want to say, so many things to unpack, but I don’t want to give anything away. So go pick this up and read it May 1st. If you haven't read Vortex Visions, book one, yet go do that first. You won't be disappointed.

Thank you so much for this ARC. This is my opinion, honest and unbiased.
