I'm a USA Today bestselling mystery/suspense/thriller author and a big horse and sled dog enthusiast.

My hunky husband and I ride our beloved draft cross horses way up in the frozen north of Snowheresville, WY, where we run a rustic, off-the-grid lodge on the face of the Bighorn Mountains. When I'm not writing or riding, I'm passionate about wilderness sports, always with a couple of rescue dogs, bear spray, a mountain lion knife, and my Judge. NO ANIMALS HAVE BEEN HARMED IN THE MAKING OF THIS LIFE ADVENTURE (but don't sneak up on me).

I've made some lists and won some awards, yada yada. Amazon Charts Top 25 bestseller. USA Today Bestseller. The Silver Falchion for Best Adult Mystery WINNER (Fighting for Anna), the WINNERS for USA Best Books Fiction: Cross Genre (Hell to Pay, Heaven to Betsy), and others. With books "in print" of over 3,000,000, readers seem to enjoy the books—I think they have exceptionally good taste. {insert goofy grin here} Lots of them follow my show Wine Women & Writing, too, where I fangirl my favorite authors and interview them for your listening and viewing pleasure. Shock Jock - a review by Rosemary Kenny

This miniscule novelette (34 pages) forms a powerful prequel to the Maggie Trilogy in the fabulous Pamela Fagan Hutchins' A What Doesn't Kill You... series.

Introducing MC Maggie Killian, a feisty female Texana singer, who despite her youth knows exactly where she's going career-wise and is uncompromising in what she will or won't tolerate. Having taken a previous side-step in her career following her refusal to change her musical/personal style, Maggie's ready to take the Country and Western music world by storm. First step is a major radio Commuter Zoo interview by actor and flavor of the moment, DJ Aaron Cryer, live on his red-hot show. Will this appearance make Maggie's career? Well it would, if it weren't for Cryer's evil intention of disconcerting Maggie with lascivious comments written on a whiteboard. You can be sure he'll never make that mistake again!

It felt like cheating to include Buckle Bunny in my reading list, so this very short story seems even more like cheating. It's just a snippet, a glimpse into Maggie's early life as an Americana (she'd say Texana) singer.

Dead Pile alludes to this scene with the shock jock when Maggie meets Amos (who is really Aaron). You get much more of a sense of what Maggie has had to do to get ahead in the music business. #MeToo all the way.

This is more like a flashback than a short story. There's no real arc - it just explains how Maggie's career took off when she challenged a pig of a DJ on air by rewriting a song she wrote about Hank. I wish I could "hear" the music because I found it hard to read the lyrics without having the music in my head.

In Shock Jock, a prequel to the Maggie series in the What doesn’t kill you series Pamela Fagan Hutchins introduces the reader to Maggie- a spitfire singer ready to set the world on fire with her brand of Texana music. Maggie joins DJ Aaron Cryor on Commuter Zoo Radio show to nurture interest in new album Buckle Bunny.

Watch Maggie face off Cryor on his showcase radio show after an hour of off-mike innuendos via a white board. You will cheer her on- already entranced with her infectious spirit and sass.

With her unrivaled character development Hutchins assembles the groundwork for Live Wire- Maggie #1. Shock Jock triumphs in endearing the reader to Maggie’s story.

Better....but still no answers

This prequel was better. Still left me zero answers as why Hank ghosted Maggie so now I dislike him even MORE for his attitude in Live Wire, but.....Maggie was less slutty in this one and even took down a jerk that was using his position to sexually harass her! Which was pretty awesome. I wish that happened more often in the industry, instead of them getting away with it. Liked that part. All this was though, was an interview, and her career seemed on the rise. So i don't get how it was basically over by Live Wire, or how she got a store going, etc.....so confused.

He should have known better…
The guy’s a jerk and deserves what Maggie doles out. This is her biggest interview yet with the hottest radio DJ on the east coast. However, even with the alcoholic refreshments she is not in the least receptive to his “white board” innuendos. As we learned in the first book one shouldn’t “mess” with Maggie. I LOVED her reaction and was cheering her on. Now it’s time to read the third book in this terrific series.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

This book picks up some time after Buckle Bunny ends. Maggie is now a well known performer and she is still beautiful, but she's following a destructive lifestyle. She lands an on-air live interview with a shock jock who isn't what he seems. Is Maggie about to self destruct? Another well written and interesting book in the series.

Super short story of Maggie's radio interview with Aaron Cryor. He sexually harasses her during the interview so when she sings one of her songs at the end, she changed the lyrics to call him out. Fans and other artists who had been subject to his technique, rally behind her and her song (the real one) becomes a hit. Aaron loses his job and wife.

This prequel helps us to understand Maggie’s sense of righteous anger a bit better. We’re also provided a lens into who she became after losing/leaving Hank. The two prequels prepare us with key insights to begin the first of the Maggie novels. She’s no shrinking violet, this one!

This is great storytelling, well written and with fantastic characters. As this is a prequel, however, it's not clear what this is all about, and I can't wait to read the rest of the series.

Shock Jock is the prequel to the Maggie trilogy by Pamela Fagan Hutchins.
In Shock Jock, we learn who is Maggie and what she is all about. Maggie is a singer-songwriter and left home at 17 with her GED and a hand me down Martin guitar. She signed with a label who wanted her to change her style of music; she calls Texana to a more current sound. She doesn't allow anyone to tell her what her should sound be.
Six years later she is booked to appear on Aaron Cryor's radio show. He is the hottest radio disk jockey on the East Coast. This interview is the biggest she has ever done and needs it to go well so she will have her songs on the radio and increase her fan base.
As she is waiting for the interview, they provide her with refreshments of her choice. Her choice is coke and Jack Daniels and cocaine. Maggie has a reputation for living fast and loose.
Maggie enters the room for the biggest interview of her life. She takes a look and decides Aaron Cryor looks harmless, in her eyes "like a church deacon." Looks can be deceiving though. During the interview, Cryor uses a whiteboard to jot down notes and cues for her. What he writes is crude and sexually explicit, She has been sexually harassed and used her whole career, but not by "a grown-up alter boy on a live broadcast."
The ensuing interactions with the disk jockey let us see the strength of her character and the spit-fire we will see in Maggie Killian in the trilogy that follows. Don't miss Shock Jock to be introduced to this fiery young woman!
