Nisio Isin (西尾維新 Nishio Ishin), frequently written as NisiOisiN to emphasize that his pen name is a palindrome, is a Japanese novelist and manga writer. He attended and left Ritsumeikan University without graduating. In 2002, he debuted with the novel Kubikiri Cycle, which earned him the 23rd Mephisto Award at twenty years of age.

He currently works with Kodansha on Pandora, the Kodansha Box magazine, and Faust, a literary magazine containing the works of other young authors who similarly take influence from light novels and otaku culture. He was also publishing a twelve volume series over twelve months for the Kodansha Box line; Ryusui Seiryoin was matching this output, and the Kodansha Box website stated that this is the first time in the world two authors have done twelve volume monthly novel series simultaneously from the same publisher.

In February, 2008, his novel Death Note Another Note: The Los Angeles BB Murder Cases was released in English by Viz Media. Del Rey Manga has already released the first volume in his Zaregoto series. His Bakemonogatari, Nisemonogatari and Katanagatari novels have been adapted into anime series. Nekomonogatari (Kuro) has been adapted into an anime TV movie, and Kizumonogatari will be release in theaters this year. Monogatari Series: Second Season, adapted from 6 books in Monogatari Series will air in July 2013. Another of his works, Medaka Box (manga), has been adapted into a two-season anime series.

(review of the whole series, finished in volume 5)

It’s yet another murder mystery manga, but with a unique and intriguing twist: the titular detective is suffering from retrograde amnesia, causing her to forget about the previous day’s events as her memory is reset every time she wakes up. Hence, she must investigate every cases as quickly as possible and invent strategies to work around her handicap.

That’s a pretty great hook, and the way Kyoko writes scribbles on her various body parts in an effort to remind herself of her identity and purpose reminded me of Christopher Nolan’s noir masterpiece Memento; down to how this practice can be both helpful and dangerous. However, you don’t actually get to see much of her perspective, as the narrative is mostly told from the PoV’s of assistant-type characters (most commonly Yakusuke Kakushidate, a young man with the knack of being suspected in criminal situation) through completely episodic format. There are six cases featuring Kakushidate as Kyoko’s helper and four shorter cases without him, making it ten cases in total.

This kind of format doesn’t really exploit the potential of its premise to the fullest, but at least the cases are good enough by themselves. Not every case involves murder, but they tend to have interesting and unique problems + solutions, with a good amount of focus on the why’s and how’s. Most of the cases have something interesting to say beyond the criminal act itself, with the following being my personal highlights:

So yeah, the cases are pretty good, but what’s disappointing is the lack of plotline that reveals the cause of Kyoko’s amnesia or her backstory. In the end, I have a mixed feeling toward her as a character; while at times I enjoyed how sassy and blasé she is about her whole circumstances, the series has a tendency of objectifying her into this mysterious yet vulnerable creature to be admired/protected, instead of developing her as an emotionally nuanced and believable human being. Some of her interaction with Kakushidate are insightful (particularly when they discuss certain philosophical/social aspects of a case), but their relationship didn’t go anywhere interesting, and there’s a bit too much of groan-worthy fanservice-y scenes/Awkward Virgin Male type of comedy (which feeds into the whole Kyoko’s objectification thing) here.

The series actually concluded with ‘End of Season 1’ note, so it’s safe to assume that there will be more of Kyoko in the horizon. That said, there’s no guarantee that it will address the issue I have with it, or that it will be published to completion here. These five volumes still stand out among your garden variety episodic murder mystery though, and worth a check for any fan of the genre. It’s definitely memorable ;)

Since I was little, I liked reading comic books with detective themes. one of them is detective conan by Gosho Aoyama. At the time of the 2020 pandemic, I decided to buy the whole series from The Memorandum of Kyoko Okitegami. My impression when reading the first volume was extraordinary. Nishio Ishin's comics do have a special character, especially in the style of drawing. The story of Kyoko, a detective, is friendly to read for everyone. Very light and entertaining during empty hours. I'm really looking forward to the next season.

I was expecting something more, but cases were not that interesting and neither the characters. I've read this in order to decide whether to watch the dorama or not, so I'll probably not watch it.

mengawali kisah dengan cukup baik meski kasus yang dihadapi adalah kasus sederhana yang dapat dipecahkan dalam satu hari. Pada jilid I ini terihat sangat sederhana sekali
