Socrates once said that the more I know, the more I realize I know nothing. In other words, with the vast number of things there is too know about that we only know or have knowledge what about only amounts to a drop in the ocean.

Knowledge is only a collection of tidbits of a myriad of items lumped together and is stored in those tiny grey cells of our minds.

The over 250 tidbits contain in this book are sure to amaze and surprise you, as will all of your friends when you start talking about them, for example:

The first selfie had actually been taken in 1913 in Russia by the Grand Duchess Anastasia.

That racism never existed back in Roman Times.

That lobster was originally considered to be a food for the poor.

The origin of the word “deadline.”

Each item is not merely a blank statement, each item consists of a brief essay surrounding the fact in question.

For wanting to give his readers something with which they can amaze their family and friends regarding their vast increasing knowledge of things, I’ve given the author, Bill O’Neill, 5 STARS.

On a note to parents- There is some mature content so you may want to listen with your kids. There's a fact section that goes into how sex was invented... we skipped it since I was listening with my kids. Beyond, that it's been quite entertaining and informative on random fun facts and the short stories behind them. It is well narrated and a fun listen, it easy to listen in small sections during quick car trips.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Head scratchers and A-HAs!

Author Bill O’Neill loves to explore all manner of subjects from reiku to trivia. He has authored many books on trivia and random facts and stands as somewhat of an expert in this field! His topics include movies, football, baseball, rock music, simply random trivia facts, and now general knowledge facts (and the fun behind the facts). Or as bill prefers to explain the book, ‘This encyclopedia is crammed full of those small pieces of information that will suddenly make the world seem like a more logical place to live. Covering a wide array of both topics as well as categories, you never know where our book of facts is going to take you next. From fun based ideas to those that are more serious alongside those things that just make you sit up and think ‘wow I never knew that!’ you will ultimately become that person that always seems to have those cool points that they can just throw into any conversation.’

Bill’s sense of humor is evident in his Introduction – ‘We all love a good story connected to different facts and this encyclopedia is full of juicy stories that will leave you stunned in absolute amazement. From costly items, to animals that save lives. To the origins of a whole host of terms and words that we now use in our daily lives without giving them much thought, we have them all covered. Our facts are intended to amaze you, make you laugh, leave you puzzled and shocked that you were blissfully unaware of such things until this very moment. Our stories are designed to pack a punch and will take you through different aspects of human history and also allow you to visit an array of cultures and countries at the same time. This is supposed to be fun. Learning about the crazy things that us humans can get up to at different times will show you just how absolutely crazy it really all is.’

Underlining his subtitle of interesting knowledge encyclopedia Bill proceeds to list fascinating and clever and entertaining and informational tidbits, a few examples of which follow:

Why does Italian sound so nice?
Where does the term “buck’ stem from??
What is a Soap Opera?
Einstein was a plumber?
Why dog collars have spikes.
What is cool about the word ‘almost’?
What is the oldest joke in the world?
Being addicted to Facebook

And on and on. Where Bill finds all of these obscure facts is a conundrum, but in our searches for explanation of facts, we simply turn to this terrific book!

First of all: "This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review."

So, I really wanted to love this audiobook. After all, I love useless knowledge! But the plethora of grammatical foibles and overall poor syntax made it very hard to enjoy.

The content was pretty good, with some things I had never heard or even heard of. Even here though, there was an overall lack of consistency. Some of the interesting facts really were interesting, while others were just common items of common sense over-explained.

The narrator, bless his heart, gave it his all. He really tried to make the redundant and overly wordy sentences sound like they made sense. But the bottom line is that many of the facts, even the interesting ones, were spoiled by over-explaining, over-describing, and just plain corny wording.

One last complaint, though by far the most minor of them all: the lack of any organization. An animal fact followed by a word fact followed by a historical oddity followed by another animal (sort-of) fact. Still, this would have been entirely tolerable if it were not for the other problems.

A book for trivia lovers

Yes there are numerous books on trivia out there and a great many are written by Bill O'Neill. So you might say why buy and read another book on trivia and the answer is simple. The answer is you just never an have too much trivial knowledge at hand. Sure you will read somethings that you have heard of before, but then you will learn about something that you didn't know about. That is what makes a book of trivia so much fun to read that little nugget of knowledge you find hidden in the pages of the book. So if you little trivia then give this one a try and see if you find something new to amaze you so you can amaze your friends.

Encyclopedias can be very dull but not this one! It covers a delightful range of topics including lipstick, hedgehogs, the origin of tea drinking, a incorrect belief about ostriches, just how much of a person's lifetime is spent waiting at a red light, how long a tunnel a mole can dig in one night, why Donkey Kong is named Donkey when the main character is an ape, paintings by monkeys, the longest war evern (over 500 years!) and how to store a husband in a shopping mall (plus many more topics.)

Really a whole lot of fun!

Bill O'Neil collects hundreds of fun trivia tidbits. He usually includes a short story, etymology, explanation, a joke or commentary.

Scott Miller narrates everything with friendly, enthusiastic energy.

It was easy and interesting listening. I just wish there were a little more organization of the facts.

Another installment of facts

It was in novel format. Not a list. I don't know if they are all true but another interesting read.
