Rate this book

SubhanAllah, what a great man. Khalid ibn Waleed and Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah رضي الله عنهما were two men who knew that he was a tool used by Allah to keep the Muslims safe from fitnah and that his death would open the doors to trials and tribulations that started at the time of 'Uthman رضي الله عنه and have now reached the point we see today.

Throughout this book you will see how 'Umar رضي الله عنه had opposed Islam and his reasons for opposition, his willingness to sacrifice himself to ensure that the Arabs are not disunited by a new faith. But slowly his heart began softening, his ignorance of the speech of Allah and his unwillingness to take part in leaving their societal norms would soon be defeated on the occasion he set out to take the life of Muhammad ﷺ. The Qur'an penetrated his heart and he questioned if that was what he was fighting, instantly his path changed. From seeing blood to attaining salvation, he rushed to RasulAllah ﷺ to bear witness

As-Sallabi then goes on to show how much strength Islam was given by his Islam, how he aided Muhammad ﷺ with his life, time, and wealth. How Islam dictated his decisions such that he divorced two of his polytheist wives who refused Islam. The countless wars he partook in seeking by them martyrdom, the vigour with which he fought and stood against the mushrikeen, the zeal to learn and aid in decision making and policies. He was so enlightened and guided by Allah that he would suggest something to Muhammad ﷺ and then revelation would come in support of what he said. He erred, but his humility reduced him to tears and brought him back in repentance and readiness to better himself.

Then the event that shook the ummah took place, Muhammad ﷺ passed away and 'Umar رضي الله عنه was in a state worse than most until he heard Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه's words: "Whoever worshipped Muhammad ﷺ, then Muhammad ﷺ has died. Whoever worships Allah, indeed Allah is ever-living and does not die.
Allah Almighty said: Muhammad is not but a Messenger. Messengers have passed before him. If he dies or is killed, will you turn back on your heels?". He realised the travesty of what has just taken place and fell to his knees in tears.

But then he was informed that discussions of khilafah already began. In an instant, he gathered himself and took Abu Bakr, enjoining that no other man can rule while Abu Bakr is living, though Abu Bakr nominated him. It would come to be that during the khilafah of Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه, he would look to 'Umar رضي الله عنه as his main aid and counsel and often remind him that he had nominated him to be caliph. Some of the people would ask Abu Bakr if he is the caliph or if 'Umar is, due to his reliance on him when making decisions and referring to his judgement, and Abu Bakr would say "but 'Umar, if he had choosed". This does not negate that Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه outweighed 'Umar رضي الله عنه greatly in the ranks of this ummah and they both knew this truth. It would also turn out many times later that 'Umar would remember him and say "Abu Bakr knew men better than me".

After that short period, 'Umar was nominated and there began the constant wars and policy making to protect the interests of the Muslims. His reign was long, and only two years after the death of Muhammad ﷺ, he had been chosen to take the reigns of leadership and he excelled. The armies reached as far as the depths of Persia in Asia and into Egypt and Nubia in Africa. (Interesting side note, al-Sallabi disputes reports that 'Umar رضي الله عنه was responsible for the burning of the library of Alexandria, Egypt. Tbf, there aren't enough to sources to verify this accusation). Islam spread to Shaam in that time too. There was war after war and his leaders and commanders were 'Amr ibn al-Aas, 'Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah, Abu Musa al-Ash'ari, Khalid ibn al-Waleed, al-Qa'qa ibn 'Amr, Sa'ad ibn Abi Waqqas, and Muthanna ibn al-Harithah to name a few, with 'Ali as one of his main judges and advisors! One of my favourite parts of this book was reading about the wars and tactics and the great warriors of this deen, may Allah have mercy on them all.

'Umar رضي الله عنه himself was a great tactician and many of the events that transpired proved that. His advice to his commanders and governors proved his understanding of victory being from Allah, when he ordered them with worship and du'aa and saying la hawla wala quwwata illa billah, and when he warned against sins and injustice and favouritism as means of earning loss and destruction from the enemy. He was harsh to men who did not obey his orders, removing many from their posts and investigating any claim and accusation made against them and even carrying out hadd when necessary. Even to the extent of allowing many common people to take their rights by taking revenge against injustice.

'Umar would not eat until his people had eaten, ordering his stomach to stop complaining about its hunger. He would cry on seeing the pain of the orphans and widows and support them as much as possible. He would gain large quantities of booty and his fear of being questioned about this wealth would force him to order his advisors to haste in measuring and distributing to the people. He would ensure the mujahideen were taken care of, and their wives, children, and other dependants. He would punish all those who infringed others' rights and give to the weak and raise people according to their merit.

I could go on but I shall stop with this... See the humility of the second greatest companion of Muhammad ﷺ at the end of his life:

"And go to 'Ā'ishah, the Mother of the Believers, and say, "Umar sends you greetings of peace. Do not say Ameer al-Mu'mineen, for today I am no longer the leader of the believers. Say, 'Umar ibn al-Khattab is asking for permission to stay with his two companions." "Abdullāh ibn 'Umar said salām and asked permission, then he went to her and found her sitting weeping. He said, "Umar ibn al-Khattab sends you salâms and is asking for permission to be buried with his two companions." She said, "I had wanted it for myself, but today I will give it up for him.""

Allah has created men who put us to shame and made them leaders, giving them the wisdom, justice, and intelligence to defeat superpowers and maintain order by appointing men most capable to carry out arduous tasks of crushing enemies and governing acquired land with justice. Read these books to understand how Islam reached a pinnacle of governance before the disunity and fitnah began.

A great life till the end of his days. He (Umar Ibn Al-Khattab R.A) ruled for over 10 years and a half. He felt he had a huge shoe to fill up: The Messenger Muhammad (SAW) followed by Abu Bakr As-Sideeq (RA). May Allah forgive them and the rest of the sahabas, the Muhajireen and the Ansar.
An extraordinary life. I wish I could live in their age and be close to them.
May Allah forgive author as well and the muslims around the world both past, present and those to come. Amin

I absolutely loved this book.

While in the beginning I had issues keeping a track of all the huge names I was coming across, it got easier once I just read either their first name only or their first name and their dads name.

But besides that I loved the book. It felt so good to be able to look into the past. Umar R.A has always been one of my favourite Islamic historic figures and reading this book and knowing more about him made me cry a bit every now and then.

And even though I knew of his passing I still cry everytime I read it or listen to it.

I hope I get my hands on volume 1 soon. 10/10 would recommend
