YA Romance with a Dark Side

I read this book through Kindle Unlimited.
Rachel is single and a Sophomore in college. Her best friend Sonya has a long term boyfriend, Ben, and Rachel is hoping to be able to find someone herself. Then she meets Asher, a dyed in the wool nerd who seems like a good friend and might have more to offer. Or so Rachel thinks until the drop-dead-gorgeous Liam takes an interest in her. But the saying goes that beauty is only skin deep and Rachel begins to suspect Liam might have a dark side she is not so keen on.

What I really enjoyed:
The characters. They are all very well drawn and have the right mix of traits and contradictions to make them feel real. The kind of people we’ve all met at some point and the kind of responses too. The relationships make sense and feel natural.
The setting. Is well described and feels solid.
The writing style. I found it fluent and easy to read with very few immersion breaking moments.
The story. Mostly this was excellent. The slow realisation of what was going on and Rachel’s awakening journey through it, was very well depicted. I liked the use of texts in the narrative when appropriate.
The pace. Spot on. It seemed to keep a good tension going even in the more relaxed moments.

What I struggled with:
The odd typo. I will admit to having a chuckle at ‘hey bail’
The alternative ending. This seemed to me as if someone had advised the author that their original planned ending really didn’t work so the author rewrote to a good one - then couldn’t resist putting the original in too. It would be a much better book without it and the fact that I read it lowered my opinion of the whole book by an entire star. I wish I hadn’t read it.

Overall thoughts:
A really good action, psychological thriller, romance, with sex scenes. Just don’t read the alternate ending, it will spoil the book for you.

Stormy kind of Love by Tia Lee is a well written romantic suspense novel. The title suits the story really well. The novel is intriguing and kept me on tenterhooks the entire read. It’s a quick and easy read. The plot is well woven and the alternate ending seems more precise. Yet, I would say that I would have some more character development of all the three MCs -- Rachel, Liam and Asher. That said, I like the story, especially the thrill factor. Recommended to all readers of romance who love to have suspense and thrill element in their books.

An interesting story of a love triangle and what happens when one person is rejected even though he wasn't fully invested in the relationship.

3 Cranky Stars

I'm on the fence with this book. Like I love the characters and the premise of the story but I just don’t know if I would call this book a suspenseful romance. It just wasn’t that... well... suspenseful.

Let me say that I love a best friend turned lover romance. Rachel and Asher are an adorable couple. I have a thing for nerds and Asher is that adorable nerd that is a bit of a romantic and was raised a good ol’ boy. He knows how to respect and love a woman. His y’all lanky form mixed with just the right amount of muscle to give him an attractive appeal was the perfect creation for that best friend math geek.

Rachel is a head full of blonde curls heading into life care free and clueless to what she wants. Typical really, but she is smart and has a big heart. What I like about her is she also makes mistakes. Not everyone is perfect. She is far from it. She overlooks Asher because she doesn’t really see him at first. How could she with hot steamy biker boy Liam? Eventually she realizes her mistake in Liam and begins to see Asher for who he really is and bam, best friends turned lovers.

Liam is every girl’s wet dream. What girl in her right mind wouldn’t want that dangerous bad boy. Who wouldn’t want to be that gorgeous gem hanging off his leather jacket arm and riding on the back of his motorcycle with hot steamy sex just waiting around the corner? But Liam isn’t a good person and he loses his mind when it comes to Rachel. Obsession and addiction and stalking take a big part in his unhealthy connection to Rachel. With his past coming to light, it’s just not a good mix.

Now, all that sounds great right? For me the story was dull. A suspenseful romance should be suspenseful and I just wasn’t on the edge of my seat biting my nails with this one. There was a big lack in basic human emotion. The POV was not written properly to pull me in completely. When I hear or read a book is a suspenseful romance I want to be completely invested, hook line sinker, pull me in and blow my mind. This book had no emotion, no descriptive details to explain the heart throbbing, exciting or terrifying sensations that the characters were feeling through the ups and downs of the story being told. If anything it was just a girl talking to her best friend giving a timeline of events that took place and nothing more.

For lack of emotions and better description with the authors writing, I give this book 3 cranky stars. Add some gory details and some insightful description to make the readers imagination go wild, then maybe this book can be considered suspenseful. Otherwise it’s like I’m listening to my 6 year old tell me a scary story that turns out to be a dry humorous fantasy that she made up.

2.5 rounded up tp 3 stars.

I really wanted to love this book, but in the end… I just don’t think the story is exciting enough to live up to its intriguing premise.

The author's writing is quite decent, but it never fully grabbed my attention. Personally, I felt like I was being told about what’s happening rather than being pulled into the story and actually experiencing it. The pacing was okay, but the flow of the story is quite… well stormy and bumpy. While the plot has a few entertaining moments, it seems like the author never builds up the emotions, the conflict, the drama, and the tension, so it seems a bit all over the place and quite lackluster at times. The dialogue is also a bit awkward and flat too. I just couldn’t feel any emotions and had such a difficult time trying to find a connection with the story and characters. Even when it should have been suspenseful, thrilling, or even sad, I found myself not really having any intense reaction to what’s happening in the story. I really do think this book has potential and there are things I liked, but for me, the story just wasn’t well executed. It’s supposed to be a suspenseful romance, but I felt very little to nothing. I did kind of like the alternate ending… even though it seemed unnecessary, I really had fun reading it.

As I mentioned, I had a difficult time connecting with the characters. I just felt so indifferent towards them.. well except for Asher. I didn’t dislike them, but I also didn’t care all that much. Rachel is an okay heroine and I thought she’s likable, but she didn’t shine like I expected. I liked that Sonya is a good friend and honestly, I felt like she’s a little bit more interesting than Rachel. I’m usually drawn to the “bad boy” type, but I didn’t find anything alluring or redeeming about Liam. Nothing that made me feel or think that there’s something substantial about him. On the other hand, I loved Asher from the moment he met Rachel. He’s sweet, considerate, caring, and just a really good guy. He’s dealing with his own personal issues so seeing his vulnerable side made me fall for him even more.

I liked and did not like the romance part of this book. I'm not really into love triangles and if it's not done in a tasteful way, well... that's a big NO for me. So, I was not a fan of the love triangle in this book. The way Rachel and Liam got together just felt unrealistic to me. There are a few scenes of them kind of flirting, but I didn’t feel any chemistry between them so as a couple… they didn’t make sense or seem genuine to me. I just knew right then and there that they would not work out. Having said that, I am definitely team Asher and was rooting for him from the start. Rachel and Asher as a couple is a little better. I liked that they’re friends first and they seem to really care about each other. Still didn’t have the all the swoony feels I love, but I liked their romance/relationship.

Stormy Kind of Love by Tia Lee is an interesting college romance story, but it didn’t make my heart melt or had me gripping the edge of my seat. There are some aspects of the book that I liked and even enjoyed, but overall I just never felt emotionally invested in the story or characters. While I didn’t love this as much as I thought I would, I think Tia Lee has really unique and interesting ideas that I’m sure will appeal to other readers.

I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Stormy Kind of Love focus more about Rachel Stinger and her preferred boyfriend, William Steward while the story keeps pointing out to Asher Rider instead. With that in mind, readers will come to realize what lurks behind such preferences and secrets that are about to unfold.

Basically, I have come to notice that there are scenes that seems vague and disorganized. Rachel, for me was just being reckless in this whole situation because she just keeps relying on her feelings in a sense that if she feels good at that that would be her stand. I just wish she put in more thoughts of her actions.

Furthermore, I believe Rachel was pressured to have a boyfriend with a good reputation and just something to talk about with. She took a chance with someone else when there is already someone better for her who willingly wants her the way she is.

As for the ending and that alternative ending. Ending - it was proper and neat because it went straight to the point in a sense that I knew it is done. Alternative ending, however, it continued at length and in a tedious way - not my cup of tea. I'd rather choose the shorter conclusion over long-winded ending.

All in all, I hope I can give my appreciation to the book and the story it portrays to the readers. Unfortunately, I did not enjoy it. Thus, I can hardly say my positive views on it.

Stormy Kind of Love is a book with potential. Unfortunately, it did not reach its potential, because it's really unfinished. It's a story about a young woman who has affairs with two men--one, a handsome bad boy and the other, your all-around good guy. These characters are well-thought out and have some depth, as do the important secondary characters. The plot is somewhat predictable, but this is a romance, so that is to be expected. The book falls down in two areas. It was obviously not professionally edited, as there are numerous typos, grammatical errors and formatting glitches. Also, it has two endings, one of them labeled the alternate ending. The alternate ending actually led to a Hitchcockian plot that could have really rocked, but I got the feeling that at that point, the author wanted to be done with book. I wish she had chosen one ending (the alternate had the best potential) and then spent the time to really polish the story. She could have had a five star book. As it is, I have to give it 2.5 stars, rounded up.

Stormy Kind of Love by Tia Lee is a sweet story about a college student, Rachel, who is described as 'in a love triangle.' I really didn't get that on her part. She chose Liam (the bad hotty) and then she chose Asher (the best friend guy). This is a 2.5 rounded to 3 stars from me. I never became invested in the story. The POV was not written properly to pull me in completely. It needs a good edit and rewrite of scenes to show more intensity in the suspenseful scenes and more depth in the characters. It went a bit fast, rushing through the telling of the story, rather than taking more time to flush out the emotions the characters were supposed to be feeling – falling short on romance and suspense. I didn't feel the romance and not on the edge of my seat at any time. It is unrealistic, to me, to have Sophomores and Juniors in college playing high school or middle school games at a party. I may have missed it, but I couldn’t tell what year this story took place. I did like that Asher and Rachel were friends first. Just not my cup of tea.

Rachel is starting her Sophomore year at university. She begins the year with normal student concerns but then finds herself between a rock and a hard place, that is a love triangle. And one of the choices could spell danger for her.

This is a contemporary romance full of suspense and drama with an alternate ending. The characters are well written, full of personality, flaws, insecurities and sorted pasts. I enjoyed the interaction between the three main characters and found myself engaged in the outcome. The story line is great, full of dangerous situations, surprises, and emotional drama , making this a suspenseful thriller. Not knowing how to handle the situations that came up was very realistic as I think most women do not know what to do. I found this book compelling and liked the fact that it dealt with a difficult situation. It is well written and worth the read.

This book is an okay college romance, with a touch of thriller. I thought the characters were okay, maybe a little shallow, but that's typical for college kids. I felt the good boy/bad boy set up was a bit typical, but it went to a dark and interesting place. Liam's jealousy and emotional manipulation felt very real. I also liked the setting--I lived in Oklahoma, and it felt like the author captured an Oklahoma college town very well.

However, there were some distracting typos, and the action felt like it didn't have enough impact on the characters. Maybe they just weren't drawn deeply enough, but Rachel seemed to take way to much in stride.
Overall, it was okay, if you enjoy this genre.

Rachel is in a love triangle…

Her “dreamy bad boy” boyfriend (Liam) shows his bad side, and she doesn’t like it.

Getting rid of him is harder than it should be, and now she’s with her original crush as-well. Liam wants to win her back, but it's complicated and starts to get dangerous.

You’ll love this romance/thriller, because it takes a turn you won’t expect!
