it got kinda bogged down with the explaining of the Tao and everything but when the story is moving along at a good pace it quite good. 5 down 8 to go.
AGGGH this volume was too good. Stakes! Action! The island getting even crazier with boss battles and new enemies on the horizon. Very excited for where this is going.
This was an explosive volume as the remaining survivors have to work together to kill one of these god-like creatures.
Yuzuriha gets to really shine this volume. Her moves are slick and brutal and working with Sagiri and her chubby assistant make for a hell of a showdown. But it really goes crazy when Shion comes and the fight explodes into a badass survival mode. The latter half of the volume reverts back to Gabimaru, but when you think it is slowing down they drop a bombshell that changes the context of Gabimaru's past completely.
I'm really digging this volume. The other stuff with the ninja/samurai working together at the end was okay, but the rest was GREAT. I'm for sure going to keep collecting these.
Warnings: body horror, graphic violence, nudity and sexual content
Sagiri, Yuzuriha, Senta and Hoko have reached Horai but they are being given a welcome by one of the Tensen, Mu Dan, who is a tough opponent for them to defeat. Even equipped with their knowlede from Hoko, they are pushed to their limits as they attempt to take him down, and Yuzuriha and Sagiri also discover that they can wield Tao, though not effectively enough. Shion and Nurugai reach them in time, but the fight is still tough. Shion himself, having discovered how he can manipulate his innate sense of Tao, and experimenting it along the way, is having a rough go at taking Mu Dan down. It made for exhilirating battle, though, with some really cool panels - I’m loving the artwork immensely, wiith it glorying in its arboreal horror.
Mu Dan, meanwhile, clarifies a lot of stuff about the island, and the why and how of the monsters here. It also means that Gabimaru’s quest might come to naught, as the kind of immortality that they are expecting is not the kind that can be sealed in a vial and presented to the shogun. It is also revealed that Tao can be harmful and can also be used by anyone who learns it, instinctively or otherwise, which again raises the question of what Iwagakure was on. Sagiri is further worried for Gabimaru, as they haven’t been reunited yet. Over at the other camp, he has woken up from expending large amounts of his life force to wield Tao in his fight, but it has shown some effects. Whether they will be eventually good or bad in outcome is yet to be seen.
By the way, Iwagakure is looking shadier and shadier by the minute, and I can’t believe I am saying this, but I am worried for the Yamada clan members who are accompanying them. Somehow, over the last couple of books, they are being endeared to the readers; the extra at the end was definitely cute. Shion is my favorite (after Sagiri, of course) because he is so cool in this book, but also cause he is interesting and hilarious in unexpected ways.
Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review from Viz Media LLC, via Edelweiss.
HOLY SHIT, THESE MONSTER DESIGNS!!! I am losing my shit, I absolutely LOVE these monster designs for the Tensen!! They look so beautiful, yet so terrifying and imposing. And holy shit, why is this series hitting me in the feels THIS EARLY?! I did NOT sign up for this and I would greatly appreciate it if it would hold off on that, THANK YOU.
On top of that, we FINALLY get an explanation on the magic system with some badass fight scenes to go along with it. The Shounen action whore in me is well and truly thriving, thank you Kaku for blessing me with this much action. Also, that theory Yuzuriha has?? I really hope it's not true, but if it is I'm going to set Iwagakure's head chief on FUCKING FIRE, holy shit I hate him so much! And finally, Chobe was amazing as usual, but I'm not looking forward to where his character is going. Can't be anywhere good, that's for damn sure...
Anyway, loved this volume, sad I have to wait until January for the next one, but it'll be well worth the wait!
So many things happened in this volume– the fight scenes in this manga are so exciting and creative! I love the concept of Tao having different attributes and it's great how this manga handles exposition without ever making it feel like info dumping by having different characters simultaneously explain it in different ways.
The thing with Gabimaru is scaring me. I don't want anything bad to happen to him :(
Shion was so insanely cool here I think he's one of my favourites along with Sagiri and Gabimaru. I always love wise mentor characters and along with his dad jokes and crazy fight scenes ... yeah I love him. This quote from Shion goes so hard, "Allow me to teach you immortals a lesson about the fleeting nature of a mortal life. About its weight, and its terror."
ALSO SAGIRI AND YUZURIHA... they are basically girlfriends I love them <3
It was definitely weaker compared to the previous volume but I still enjoyed it. This volume focuses more on Sagiri's group (Yuzuriha, Senta and later others). They face another Lord Tensen and the fight itself was good but the ending was anticlimactic in my opinion. Seeing Yuzuriha in action was good and her character is super bubbly. I'm also curious about Sagiri's future. The book ends with a certain plot twist about our boy Gabimaru. In short, overall it is good but we'll see what happens in the future.
Still a really solid read so far. The lore of the island is being figured out while presenting some new challenges as the groups grow in power and learn from each other. We have a new side mystery as well, which adds some nice flavor even if it is a bit sinister and sad.
There is also some pretty stellar action scenes in this one, and I love all the dynamic movement and cleverness of the creature design.
I wasn’t gonna leave any reviews until the last one, but damn, are these fights crazy. These Lord Tensen true form designs are so damn cool. Not to mention a pretty thick plot alongside some pretty thicc plot.
Vollkommen vergessen diesen Manga einzutragen. Immer mehr großartige Charaktere sterben, es ist ein einziges Massaker und trotzdem kann ich nicht aufhören zu lesen. Am Ende der Reihe werde ich wahrscheinlich weinen 😭
I think the library lost their physical copy because it vanished from my hold list after a year and I can't find it anymore. I read this digitally instead.
I already knew something was up with Gabimaru, but that story near the end? Bruh, I am shook. This is as bad as JJK with character deaths to omg, do NOT get attached to any character, just don’t.
They explain tao (basically a life force) and how it is used to defeat these ghouls. The godlike people are able to be killed and are quite perverse. The samurai returning to the mainland have a boat filled with devils. Gabimaru is possibly being mind controlled (his beloved wife might not even exist?!!)
The best part of this story is the mishmash of religious iconography, flowers and tentacle monsters. Everything is creepy in the way an old timey clown is- interested to see
