A box set, containing the first two novellas in the Human Extinction Level Loss (H.E.L.L.) series, SUBSTATION, and LIBERATION.
Substation
When the Zombie Apocalypse hits, the power will fail, within two days the grid will go down. Everyone knows that. Gary Sykes knew it too. From his mundane job at Tres Hombres substation, Gary saw the outbreak coming, knew that the horrific zombie attacks being reported on the news were only going to get worse. The plague was here and the days ahead were going to be dark, except Gary Sykes had a plan, a plan that just might keep the lights burning a little longer.
When Nicole Bennett and her band of survivors had to fight for their lives, they could do it with the lights on thanks to the efforts and sacrifice of one man. This is his story.
The Last Stand of Gary Sykes
Liberation
It has been eight months since the the zombie virus swept through Tres Hombres Substation and changed Beverly Sanders' life forever. She, her husband Mark, and their young son Tommy have tried to hang on while all around them the world fell victim to one zombie horde after another. A simple message, broadcast twice a day on every channel has drawn them out.
"This is Nicole Bennett. We are survivors. To anybody that can hear us, and can get here, we offer you refuge..."
On the road, they meet Sheriff Jacob Miller and learn that not all who heard the message believed it was real. Jacob roams the Deadlands, chasing demons of his own and following the horde that took his town. Will he help Beverly and her family reach Colorado, or will they fall victim to his guilt and sadness?
After the zombie apocalypse, Gary Sykes gave survivors a chance. Nicole Bennett and her Colorado safe haven will give them a hope.
Philip A. McClimon is an author who likes to write about the end of the world (post-apocalyptic, Sci/Fi), mostly because he thinks the shopping would be awesome (No crowds, everything free). He likes heroes that are the strong, silent type and not necessarily male. By silent he means up until the time there is something snarky to say, usually before, during, and after doing something cool.
So, that's Phil. He's not strong, rarely silent, and isn't known for doing a lot of cool things.
I really liked this collection of two stories from Philip A. McClimon. Set at the outbreak of a zombie apocalypse, the tension was just right and the gore factor perfect for me. I found the character of Gary utterly maddening early on in the first story. I won't ruin it for you, but what an idiot. That said, he redeemed himself really well and I enjoyed the narrative.
In the second story, I enjoyed the story of Beverly, her husband Mark, and her young son Tommy. I found the character of Jacob particularly poignant.
All that said, I found the spelling errors distracting. Know this, if you're not as fussy as I am on spelling, this is a four star all day long.
Started well but quickly went down hill. It was Okay, took a bit of boredom out of lockdown but I will not be reading the next book in the series. I did not like the style of writing and the constant repetition of character names started to drive me insane. I never want to look at the name Gary again. The story did not flow too well, I can see what the author was intending to do by bringing the stories together but in my opinion it just didn't work.
Two stories in this collection makes the first volume in a zombie series. In one, a woman is stuck at a power plant during a zombie outbreak. Beverly tries to get home and saves the pant at the same time.
Next, Beverly and her family brave the lands to find salvation in the mountains.
This has a lot of heart but has lots of typos. It was distracting to read and very slow to get through.
Grabs you and takes off....At first I wasnt to sure but as book went on and other characters were introduced it really grabbed me. Different situations with better characters....I'm looking forward to next books in series..
This book set up an interesting set of characters that Mr McClimon did cut down and yet became unpredictable at the start and yet became more predictable at the later end but it did lead to a good payoff nevertheless.
