Former Army Night Stalker Rick Jordan usually has his camp for foster children to himself during the winter months. But someone has visited recently--leaving a trail of blood. One of the two clues left behind tips Rick off to the identity of his visitor, who soon turns up dead. The police deem it an accident, but Rick isn't convinced. With the help of private investigator Heather Shields, he sets out to decipher the remaining clue. Except someone doesn't want them to succeed--and will stop at nothing to keep them from finding the truth.

I have read nearly all of Hannon's romantic suspense books, but I think Dark Ambitions might just be my favorite!
I really liked both of our main characters. Heather Shields, former homicide detective turned private eye (I was so excited for the return of the Phoenix, Inc. crew!). And Rick Jordan, former Night Stalker turned youth ministries worker. Both of these characters had a lot of depth and chemistry that made them great together and individually. Of course, the romance got to be a bit much for my tastes, but I enjoyed the story so much I was able to ignore that for the most part.
The story starts out with Rick trying to find an old army friend he believes to be in trouble, and hiring Heather to help him. From there, the plot quickly turns deadly. Many twists and turns keep Heather and Rick--and the reader--on their toes. Hannon also includes her trademark action and suspense liberally throughout, as well as some witty banter from the Phoenix Inc. crew that lightens the story a bit. With so many leads and so many potential "bad guys," you are kept guessing until the end.
All in all, I greatly enjoyed this newest release from veteran author, Irene Hannon! Full of everything you expect to find in a romantic suspense novel combined with Hannon's experienced writing style. I highly recommend this book to all fans of romantic suspense!
FTC Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book from Revell Reads. I was not required to write a positive review. These are my honest thoughts and opinions.
This was my first Irene Hannon book and it most certainly will not be my last. I read over half of this book last night but sadly had to put it down to get some sleep otherwise I know I would have stayed up all night just to finish this. I was hooked by page one and I was so lost trying to discover who was behind everything. The plot twist was so good and Mrs. Hannon did a fabulous job with it. I was not expecting it.
The characters were amazing. I loved Heather, Rick, Nicki, and all the other side characters - that I was supposed to like anyway. Heather and Rick were to die for. Their characters individually and together were beautifully written. The chemistry between them was written really well too. Rick was probably my favorite out of all characters, maybe I'm being biased because he was an ex-Army Night Stalker, but his character was just so great!
The plot was fast paced and I really enjoyed it. I highly enjoyed about Mrs. Hannon kept me on my toes throughout this entire novel. That made reading this even better. I almost wish we received a bigger climax, it ended a bit too soon for me but it was still good nevertheless. The Epilogue was probably my favorite. I always love endings like that!
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and I will definitely be reading the other Irene Hannon books I have on my shelf! :)
*I received this book from Revell in exchange for my honest opinion. All thoughts are my own. I was not required to write a positive review.*
From page 1 until the conclusion, the final book in Irene Hannon's Code of Honor series is action filled and suspense driven. It's great to meet the characters of the Phoenix PI company once again, and this books focuses on the newest member of the group, Heather Shields. Rick Jordan, her client, has found items left in his storage shed as well as drops of blood that indicate his military buddy, Jackson Dunn, had been on his property. When he can't find him or contact him, Rick hires Heather to find his friend.
This book has so many fantastic twists and turns with multiple villains and an absolutely shocking ending. It was difficult to put it down until I reached the last page; and, even then, I was shaking my head and going what??? Definitely one of Hannon's best suspense books that contained a wonderful set of characters, a superb plot, a good faith element, and a romance that didn't overwhelm the suspense. I hate to say good-bye to the Phoenix PI group and hope that Hannon will bring them back in another series!
'He might never have needed a gun in the four years he'd called this rural Missouri acreage home, but it was better to risk overkill than be killed.'
I never miss an Irene Hannon book. She writes two each year and I've always got them on my list of books to read. She is quite skilled at her psychological suspense novels and she keeps the reader guessing throughout.
Former Army Night Stalker Rick Jordan, now running a camp for foster kids, finds blood on his property one evening and evidence that someone has broken into a shed. He needs to find out what has happened to a former Army buddy who saved his life and so he hires Phoenix Inc., an elite group of private investigators. He is given as an investigator Heather Shields, former police detective, who is eager to take his case. Together, they discover that someone is willing to kill, not just once, to keep them from finding the truth and Rick's buddy. All the while they must keep their attraction from one another on the back burner.
Hannon creates intrigue with a good dose of romance to keep her readers coming back for more. She never disappoints with her ability to start a bit slow, though very interesting, then builds layer upon layer as the story progresses, until finally the book is racing toward a surprising, yet satisfying conclusion. I never manage to guess the culprit, either. That's the mark of a good suspense writer. I enjoyed every minute, staying up late to finish the book. Highly recommended.
*My thanks to Revell Publishing for a preview copy of this book via Net Galley. The opinions expressed here are entirely my own.
I adore Irene Hannon. Just putting that out there right off the top. One of my fave authors -- whether she's writing suspense or contemporary romance. I love the way she develops her characters into living, breathing people I feel like I know. And the way she develops a romance -- whoooowheeee -- makes me one very happy reader. She delivers all that and more in this latest book in her Code of Honor series (somebody tell me it's not the last one...pretty please!) Sigh -- the only downside of being an Irene Hannon fan is that you're never ready to say goodbye to beloved characters.
There's a different feel to this romantic suspense because it starts out more like a mystery and morphs into suspense about halfway through. We get lots of great details on the procedurals in the day-in-the-life of a PI as Heather accepts Rick as her new client...a client who has an invested interest in solving the case so it's not long before they end up working together.
Eeeepp -- that's my cue to talk about the romance! There's a spark right from the start. One they don't spend a long time trying to douse. :-) But acknowledging the attraction and acting on it are two very different things. Heather's not about to mix up her business and personal life. Get this missing persons case solved first and then see what transpires with the very compelling former Army Night Stalker. All good in theory. Let me just say I love the way Rick finds ways around that resolve. Happy sighs and toe curls.
The actual suspense is so compelling. We're given a few different points of view, and honestly, the murderer could be any of them. Or not. Love the way the tension builds and the occasional sinister first person point of view just ratchets it up all the more. So many gasp-out-loud plot twists! I might have shouted myself hoarse trying to raise the alarm a time or two. But did Heather and Rick listen to me? Humph. No they did not and caused me untold angst and heartache as a result. I should be mad at them but....it made for a more suspenseful story so I'll give them a pass. :-)
If you've been following the series, you'll be happy to know we get a nice bit of 'Treehouse Gang' interaction between Rick, Kristin and Colin. Love their banter and 'adopted sibling' rivalry. These are special friends who always have each others back. And the epilogue...sigh...it's soooooo cute!!! No worries, if you haven't read Dangerous Illusions or Hidden Peril (though you definitely should!) Dark Ambitions makes a great standalone read as well.
4.5 stars for this romantic suspense by Irene Hannon. While this book indicates that it's book 3 in the Code of Honor series, I was unaware that it was part of a series when I started it and did not get lost at all, so it definitely works fine as a stand-alone. I'm assuming books 1 and 2 go into more detail on characters that are background characters in this one.
My only complaint about this book was that at the beginning, there were too many people introduced early on without much detail. If I took a break from reading and went back, I got confused as to who was who. As the story went on and details were added, that got much easier and eventually all of the characters tied together. In order to avoid any confusion, I'd probably recommend starting this one when you have a couple of hours to fully devote. Once you're solidly into the story line, the confusion lessens significantly.
This book began with a mystery that brings the 2 main characters together. When he finds blood on his property, Rick Jordan hires a PI, Heather Shields, to find his missing friend. What started out as a simple missing persons case becomes much more entrenched as the story goes on and the more time they spend together, the stronger their attraction. Generally the romance part of a romantic suspense novel has me rolling my eyes. While this one was palatable, I still struggled with how fast it moved (which is typical of this genre); however, I have no doubt that fans of romantic suspense who enjoy a good dose of romance will eat it up. I appreciated that the overall story-arc was the mystery, and that while it was suspenseful, it wasn't "keep me up at night, on the edge of my seat" suspense. The story line was good, the plot moved at a good pace, the characters were very likable, and there was also a subtle faith thread. All in all, I would definitely recommend this one to fans of clean or inspirational romantic suspense.
Special thanks to Revell via NetGalley for an advanced E-copy of this book. I was not under any obligation to write a review and the thoughts contained herein are my own.
Irene Hannon is an author that I know that I can always count on for a good suspenseful read. Dark Ambitions is the third in the Code of Honor series and a great addition. Those who enjoy reading Ms. Hannon's suspense books regularly will recognize characters from other series. In this book, Rick Jordan, a former Army Night Stalker and member of the Treehouse Gang, runs a summer camp for kids just outside St. Louis, Missouri. But it is deep winter the day before Christmas Eve when he discovers blood drops on the snow at his cabin and boat storage building. Something else the person leaves behind makes him think that his old friend from the Army, Boomer, has been there but he is no where to be found. Former St. Louis police detective Heather Shields is the newest member of the Phoenix, Inc Private Investigators Firm. After an incident turned out bad, she resigned from the police force. When the firm is recommended to Rick, Heather is assigned his case. This is a mystery that is not easily solved as the two work to find Boomer and what turns out to be another murder connected. Someone has a lot to lose if they are found out. Politics, money, greed all unite the past with aspirations for a powerful future can cause people to do whatever it takes to keep secrets. This story has action, mystery, suspense, romance and faith tied up in a page turner with a little surprise twist at the end, for me. I received a complimentary ARC from Revell Publishing through NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine only.
Wow! Irene Hannon really knows how to write amazing psychological suspense. Her stories always grip me from the first page and keeps me on the edge of my seat throughout the rest of the book. This book was absolutely no exception. I couldn't put this down, and it kept me guessing the entire time. The romance and faith aspect of this story fit perfectly with the suspense. Nothing overshadowed anything else. I loved how well it all blended together to make the perfect story.
I would highly recommend this book and entire series to anyone who enjoys suspense novels.
*I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher for an honest review. All opinions are my own*
Had a great time reading Irene Hannon Code of Honor series. I was able to find out what happen to all the tree house gang. This one will have you guessing until the end who is responsible?? A fun ride! I really do enjoy Irene Hannon suspense novels!! Highly recommend this series!!!
Dark Ambitions is the third book in the Code of Honor series by Irene Hannon and a very polished suspense novel. Every time I crack open an Irene Hannon book it seems like I’ve come home. Not only because I lived in St. Louis for twenty years and know the setting well, but because I am very comfortable with the exemplary way Ms. Hannon writes. She captures the genre well. Her stories are exciting but totally believable, and the romance sizzles beneath the surface. The research into law enforcement procedures shines. Her descriptions of an icy winter day in St. Louis took me right back to when I lived there. The story was so riveting, I read it in just over a day. I am never disappointed in a book by Ms. Hannon. She writes the most caring, upstanding heroes I love the way her books interconnect but still can stand alone. She shows how colleagues can work together seamlessly, be people of character, and rely on God. “The truth is, no one can see the future except God. All we can do is make the best choice we’re capable of with the information we have in the present.” *A complimentary copy of this book was provided by Revell Publishers through Interviews and Reviews. Code of Honor series is one of my favorite Irene Hannon series. In this book we meet Ryan Jordan, a member of the Treehouse Gang. He’s searching for a friend and Heather Shields, PI, is tasked to help him.
I loved the romance between the two. There was just something about it that was sweet and also one that had sparks flying. And the suspense was great! There were multiple povs in here and I was trying to figure out which one of those extra povs was the bad guy. I’m glad that it kept me guessing and turning the page.
All in all, another satisfying read from Ms. Hannon.
*I received a complimentary copy via NetGalley from the publisher. My review was not required nor influenced.
“Dark Ambitions” is a rip-roaring crime thriller based on the disappearance of an army buddy of Former Captain Rick Jordan. “Boomer” may be in trouble or worst but when he is found dead and the police deem his death accidental Rick is far from being convinced, turns to PI Heather Shields for help and joining force they set out to decipher what could have happened…but they soon find out that someone will stop at nothing to thwart their plan.
I simply loved this psychological mystery filled with lots tension on every page. It has oodles action, suspense galore to keep us on our toes, a bit of romance to soften the narrative. But what it does well is telling us how money and the search for power can corrupt anyone. This tale is neatly said.
Although part of a series this amazing novel works very well as a standalone. But be warned, if you haven’t read the first two novels you will be very curious to see what is in them. I know I was glued to every word with “Dark Ambitions” and so captivated I couldn’t stop myself from rapidly flipping the pages to see where it would lead. No doubts, the story is fast-paced, has crazy plot twists and an ending I did not see coming. A plus are the amazing characters to entertain us from the get-go.
I enjoyed this book immensely…Kudos
I received this book from the Publisher Revell via the First Reviewer Program for my thoughts
I so enjoyed listening to this last book of the Code of Honor series! I loved that the characters from the first two books had a few scenes with these main characters, as well. Of course, if you haven't read the first two books, you can still enjoy this one on its own, too.
The danger and suspense were well-written and I loved the connection that Rick and Heather began to feel for each other right away. Their attraction to each other added for nice romantic tension as they hoped to finish the case and be able to explore a possible relationship.
There were some great twists in this story and I really enjoyed it from beginning to end. Now I am going to have to find some more of this author's books that I haven't read (and I have read quite a few of them) on audio to enjoy.
Thank you Revell for an advanced copy. I voluntarily reviewed this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
Dark Ambitions By: Irene Hannon
*REVIEW* 🌟🌟🌟🌟 Although part of a series, Dark Ambitions reads fine as a standalone. This story is a solid mystery with believable elements, and the suspense is thrilling but not over the top. There are twists and turns. The main characters, Ryan and Heather, are out to solve a crime, and chemistry builds between them. The romantic aspect is an undercurrent and not at the center. I enjoyed this suspenseful dramatic read and hope to read more from the author.
If you enjoy good clean Christian mystery and suspense, this one is a must! From the first page the author drew me in and didn’t let go, and held me right though the epilogue! There is almost non-stop action here, and I found myself holding my breath, more than a few times. You will find surprises here and as the facts begin to unfold, a bit of sweet romance. I was, tongue in cheek, blown away when the bombshells began falling! I have read many books by Irene Hannon, and this one rates right at the top, and now I can’t wait for the next! I received this book through the Publisher Revell blogger program, and was not required to give a positive review.
Dark Ambitions is the thrilling third book in the Code of Honor series. It is a fantastic book, with crossover characters from both the two prior books in the series and the Private Justice series. It has scintillating romance and a crime to solve with limited clues to go on and plenty of intriguing suspects.
Heather Shields is the newest member of the Phoenix Inc Private Investigator team. When former Army Night Stalker, Rick Johnson, asks for her help to locate a missing ex-team member, she never could have expected where the investigation would lead them, or the possibility of a blooming romance between herself and Rick.
Heather and Rick make a great investigative team. But more than that they make a great team. Their connection and chemistry is what really drives this story. While the prologue and first chapter lead with the intrigue to set the scene for this mystery, the rest of the first quarter of the book is focused on romance and matchmaking - instant attraction, matchmaking receptionists and fathers, and blooming chemistry. Once Heather and Rick do a bit of investigating and learn what they are up against, the sleuthing intensifies a little, though the romance continues to be the thread that pulls the story together. And there is no denying Rick and Heather’s connection - the chemistry seeps from the page and they work well together, sharing a faith, ideals, past hurts and a desire for a relationship.
The crime itself is intriguing. While the reader is given chapter sections from the perspective of the person behind the killer, due to some clever writing and chapter perspectives from a number of other characters, it is hard to tell just who is behind everything - and I certainly wasn’t sure, even as the big reveal played itself out. There are some tense, dangerous moments to bring the book to climax and a sweet conclusion.
Readers of Irene Hannon’s previous novels will enjoy this third book in The Code of Honor series, as will readers of romantic suspense.
The publishers provided an advanced readers copy of this book for reviewing purposes. All opinions are my own.

When former Army Night Stalker Rick Jordan finds evidence that human blood has been spilled on his rural Missouri property, his instincts go on high alert. After careful reconnaissance, he knows exactly who made him a surprise visit, but obviously something went terribly awry.
Soon after Rick Jordan hires private investigator Heather Shields to locate his missing friend, several coincidences appear to intersect; making the case much more difficult to solve and much more dangerous to pursue. Someone out there has dark ambitions, and is more than willing to kill anyone who gets in their way.
"All we can do is make the best choice we're capable of with the information we have in the present. . . . . and sometimes we make mistakes."
The strength of this story is in its ending, which the author spins perfectly out of control. Fans of high octane romantic suspense will enjoy every bend and twist of this riveting conclusion to the "Code of Honor" series.
I received a copy of this book from Baker Publishing through Interviews and Reviews. The opinions stated above are entirely my own.
I've read all three of the Code of Honor series books and this one started out a little slow for me. After the initial punch of suspense, the story seems to lag with the investigation thread leaving me want a little more on the suspense side. I really felt like the on-page chemistry between the main characters and the side characters was slightly stronger but overall, the romance between Rick and Heather comes together nicely at the end. Overall, not my favorite of the three books but still a solid story that concludes the series well.
***I was provided this book by the publisher. I was under no obligation to give a positive review and all opinions expressed are my own.***
On a cold winter day Rick Jordan finds blood on the ground outside of his cabin. Soon he finds evidence that someone who rescued him in the past must be trying to cash in on Rick's promise to help him if he was ever in need. Rick goes to Phoenix Inc. hoping to enlist the help of an investigator to find his fellow Night Stalker.
Heather Shields is the newest member of the Phoenix team. A former detective for the police department, Heather is used to men thinking because she is a woman she isn't capable of doing her job. After a bit of a rocky start Heather and Rick come to an agreement that the Phoenix group will take Rick's case. Can both of them shelve their mutual attraction to get the job done?
DARK AMBITIONS had so many layers to it and so many characters. I really enjoyed trying to figure it all out. There was a lot of suspense because the stakes were pretty high for some of the players in the story. I also enjoyed Rick and Heather's relationship. They trusted each other and they worked well as a team. Rick was the last of the Treehouse Group with his best friends both married it was now his turn to find a Happily Ever After. It almost didn't happen with the danger both he and Heather were in at the end of the book. Exciting and fast-paced, DARK AMBITIONS was what I have come to expect from author Irene Hannon and I highly recommend it to fans of romantic suspense.
I think this was the strongest of the series. I really liked Rick from his interactions with the others of the Treehouse Gang in the previous books, and I also enjoyed getting to know Heather in this book and in her role as part of the Phoenix PI group. The action/suspense in this novel was also top-notch. I had 4 different suspects running around my head for a bit, but had pretty much eliminated 2 by about 65% through, only to find out that my suspicions were almost entirely off base at the point of the reveal! Though it was subtle, I liked that both Rick and Heather were people of faith, and that that faith coloured their actions and desires, not only for the truth to come out about the investigation at hand, but in their behaviour as acquaintances, then friends, then more once the investigation was complete.
This is a fantastic finale to Irene’s latest suspense trilogy! The characters of Rick and Heather were superb and the storyline for this one can’t be beat. I was immediately swept up in the mystery from the beginning of the book and the conclusion to the book was extremely satisfying. There were multiple twists in the story which made it even more intriguing. There are political elements as well that were a perfect addition to the story. Irene writes some of the BEST Christian suspense out there and this is another great one. Highly recommend!
I received this book from the publisher and was not required to post a positive review. All thoughts are my own.
The first half of the book was boring and it was hard for me to keep interested in the story. However, the second half got exciting and things started to come together.
Irene Hannon is one of my top three romantic suspense authors. Dark Ambitions is a classic example of why. The story hits the ground running, quickly becoming a page turner I couldn't put down until the final satisfying page.
Former Army Night Stalker Rick Jordan hires former police detective turned PI Heather Shields to find a missing friend. Even though they both have baggage from the past, the chemistry between these two was instantaneous and the attraction sizzles, only gets stronger throughout the story. I enjoyed their flirting and witty interactions. A swoon-worthy romance!
The mystery concerning the disappearance of Rick's army buddy Boomer leads the two on a compelling suspenseful chase. Hannon's brilliant twists and turns in this dangerous investigation were eerie and spine-chilling.
My favorite quote, "If we're exchanging philosophies, here's mine. Living in the past doesn't change it. The key is to learn from our mistakes and move on."
It was great catching up on the lives of the other two members of the childhood Treehouse Gang, Kristin and Colin. The close relationship of the three was charming. I also enjoyed how close Heather was to her father.
I am a big fan of an epilogue and Hannon delivers on all counts with a wonderful happy ending, simply delightful. Irene Hannon at her very best! I appreciate Revell Publishing making a copy of Dark Ambitions available for review.
Dark Ambitions by Irene Hannon is book 3 in the Code of Honor series, but it reads well as a stand-alone. I have not read the first two stories, but I am definitely adding them to my TBR!
This story starts off quickly, but the pace slows down a bit for the middle part of the story before it ramps up again at the end. I thought I had quickly figured out who the villain was - several times! I ended up being correct while totally wrong at the same time!
I liked both Rick and Heather and I thought their chemistry was good, but I would’ve have liked to have seen more development in their relationship throughout the story instead of just an immediate attraction. I was really glad that Ms. Hannon added the epilogue because without it, I feel their story would have been lacking.
Overall, this is a good solid read and I’m looking forward to reading the first two stories soon!
I received a complementary copy of this book from Revell publishing.
With nonstop action and incredible plot twists, award winning author Irene Hannon takes readers on a thrilling ride filled with danger, intrigue, and romance. Dark Ambitions, the third installment of Irene Hannon’s Code of Honor series, is the perfect novel for readers of romantic suspense who enjoy a good romance in the midst of fast-paced action and a highly compelling storyline.
Former Army Night Stalker Rick Jordan discovers a trail of blood and clues left behind that indicate someone he knows is in extreme danger. He enlists the help of private investigator Heather Shields, and suddenly they are both in the fight for their lives as their investigation takes a deadly turn.
This is my first book by Irene Hannon, but it won’t be my last! Dark Ambitions is the third book in the series, but it can easily be read as a stand-alone novel. The fascinating storyline and the close group of childhood friends featured in this series made Dark Ambitions so enjoyable that I also plan to read the rest of the Code of Honor series.
Irene Hannon authentically weaves the faith thread into the storyline as the characters demonstrated their beliefs and values in their daily actions. The chemistry between Rick and Heather is evident from their very first meeting, and their developing attraction is realistically portrayed as they work to maintain a professional relationship during their investigation.
Dark Ambitions is highly recommended for fans of romantic suspense, and especially readers who enjoy books by authors such as Lynette Eason, Dani Pettrey, Lynn H. Blackburn, and Rachel Dylan. I am definitely looking forward to Irene Hannon’s future releases and delving into the backlist of her previously published books.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Revell and was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine.
Dark Ambitions is a new romantic suspense novel by seasoned author Irene Hannon. This is the third book in the Code of Honor series, though it was easily a standalone read. To me, this book was basically a Hallmark romance (physical attraction at first sight, mushy interactions, a fast fairy-tale ending despite a few bumps in the road) with some extra excitement thrown in, though not truly suspenseful.
The story has interesting potential, and it was fast paced, but overall it was pretty bland. It certainly kept my attention, mainly because the anonymous "bad guy" isn't revealed until the very end (albeit I guessed who it was, not because there were any clues, though). There weren't any twists or other surprises at all, though, sadly, and, without giving away any plot spoilers, there were some aspects of the story that felt a little contrived and over the top to me. Also, there were a lot of characters, which was a little confusing initially, in part because of the many changing points of view throughout the book, which in and of itself seemed to detract from potential character development of the main protagonists especially. I did appreciate that the leads were both portrayed as morally upright with high standards and boundaries, professionally and personally, even though their instant attraction to each other and subsequent romantic feelings are eye-roll worthy (as always in this genre, even from Christian publishers!). Content note: mild (most times ridiculous) sexual references and innuendo.

“Dark Ambitions” by Irene Hannon was another great thriller by this author. Irene Hannon always delivers with exciting thrillers that twist and turn along the way. This is book 3 in the Code of Honor series, but you don’t have to read the first three books before reading this one.
This book begins with Rick Jordan. He finds some blood on his property so he hires Heather Shields, a PI, to find who the blood belongs to. However, this isn’t a cut and dry case. It gets deeper and deeper into the mystery of who this man could be. There is also some romance thrown into the mix!
I definitely recommend this book for anyone that enjoys good, clean, suspenseful fiction. Irene Hannon is one of my favorite authors for this type of read. I received this book from the publisher through NetGalley for my honest opinion.
