A new case brings back old memories for Special Agent Kate Reid.
A cold case in Boston suddenly turns hot again when a construction worker uncovers bones at a site along Boston’s famed Charles River. The remains are presumed to belong to a victim of the serial killer who haunted the city in the 1980s. However, when more victims turn up and are believed to be much more recent deaths, the elite BAU team is called in to investigate the similarities. The team, led by Agent Nick Scarborough, arrives to work with the local FBI field office. But this is all too familiar for Agent Kate Reid when parallels are drawn between this investigation and her own search for a killer who resurfaced years later. Now she confronts not only the reminders of her former days, but someone is working against her interests that could undermine her very sanity.
“Bone”, 9th in Mahle’s currently 10-book FBI Agent Kate Reid set, is typical of the other two we’ve read in this series. Unfortunately, our enjoyment quotient has declined with each as we have found all three overpopulated with law enforcement personnel who especially in this one did little but trip over each other. That Quantico would send so many agents but leave local Boston cops in charge of a multiple death scenario totally stretched credulity, and resulted in a really poor denouement that left most readers puzzled and unhappy. Moreover, Kate, hardly an endearing protagonist, is more of a profiler than a field operative per se, and there were two of them in that role this time – really?
There was also little original about the serial killer plot, other than that when one murderer becomes too crippled to continue, his “adopted” son takes over for him. That they had the “help” of a State Police officer was also difficult to swallow. While the author’s writing skills are OK (aside from some rather obvious editing errors) as she cobbles up various degrees of suspense, we must conclude that her character development/deployment and plot crafting skills are not first class work. While at first we thought this might be a series we would pursue, we now feel our reading hours are better spent elsewhere. {2.5}
I have followed all Kate Reid novels. Find somewhat repeatative now and this is probably my last. Find somewhat depressive and Kate's life doesn't have much positive in it.
I really enjoyed reading this book. I found the characters believable and could relate to them. I’m only sorry I did not pick up this series before. Starting at book 9, there were obviously some parts I did not get as they were likely references to earlier books.
I was pretty disappointed in the ending. All this build up and then the way it ended? No explanation of who killed who?? I enjoyed the book, but felt I was left hanging.
At a construction site, the Foreman was called to see what the issue was. While digging, his team had discovered a hand in the mud. The Foreman had called the authorities. Det King closed down the site to investigate. The corpse had been buried for over 20 years. Once the body had been removed by the Medical Examiner’s office and the crime scene had been finalized, the construction crew were approved to start construction on the south side of the site. While starting the construction on the south side, once again, the Foreman was called again. The crew had found another body. The ME’s office completed their autopsies on both corpses. Their deaths were the result of blunt trauma as well as an ice pick to the chest, and other parts of the body. The MO of both bodies matched the same one as the Charles River Killer from over 30 years previously. Det King called in the FBI, since there were multiple murders related to a closed cold case from many years ago. SUA Nick Scarborough and Kate Reid from the BAU Department in Quantico arrived with their entire team. There’s just one problem, the first corpse was from over 20 years ago, and the second one was from only two weeks. Did the Charles River Killer resurface and become active again or is there a copycat killer loose? After reviewing the file from many years ago, it was found that there were tips within the file that had never been investigated. Why were the tips hidden in the file? Is there a police officer involved in covering up the evidence? Will SAC Reid be able to finally catch the Charles River Killer? What is the motive? What dark secrets are being exploited with each murder? Can the murderer possibly evade the Boston Police Department, the Boston FBI Field Office, as well as the BAU law enforcement agencies? There was constant action, mystery, and intrigue throughout this book. The plot was very good, as well as the character development. I also liked the characters of SUA Scarborough and SAC Reid. I liked the way the BAU Team worked together to profile this mysterious murderer. I also liked the way the BAU procedures were revealed to the public. However, more editing should have been done, because the Charles River Killer was referred to quite a few times as the Chuck River Killer. I enjoyed the book and can’t wait to see what Scarborough and Reid are up against in the next book.
Another thrilling Kate Reid Thriller Book 9. This Kate Reid series gets better and better and in each book you get to know Kate better and her job as a profiler as well as her team and partner. The main character Kate and the team are called in to help and assist when a body is found in Boston on a building site possibly going back to the 80-90s being a unsolved case known then as the “Charles River Killer” It then develops into something else when other bodies start turning up possibly by a copycat who may or may not have known the original killer as to similar not to be? Also as the case progresses Kate finds that she has to overcome her past and present complications in order to capture the killer. The story follows both the original killer a man called Eugene; his captives and murders; his son James his murders and obviously Kate who with the team has to solve the many clues before more become victims. A very absorbing and interesting story intricately woven that shows several sides to this story. Again it has its victims, bad state police officer, the team working alongside the police department and authorities and so many twists and turns. My only comment is too many abbreviations for example BAU – NCVAC – OSHA - ASAC ok if you know but annoying when you don’t! Long may this series and Kate continue?
Excavating to reach the old sewer line, a hand was seen in the mud hole. Examining the body showed death was done by an ice pick to the skull and body. Decade old murder of a woman. Permission to continue digging in another area, another body. How many more bodies are in this area, mob related, or by Buckley, and his son. Story gives you detail information on the investigation. Romance with Noah and Kate, they still want to keep it quiet, brought to her attention maybe she has side stepped her potential, not wanting to outshine him. Both are concerned that there maybe trouble ahead for them, having trusted the wrong person. A good flowing plot, good strong characters for the task job that they do, comes thru. Making this another book definitely worth reading. Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.
When bodies start showing up along the Charles River, the FBI calls in the elite BAU team, led by Agent Nick Scarborough. All this is too familiar for Agent Kate Reid. Now she confronts not only the reminders of her former days, but someone is working against her interests that could undermine her very sanity. Will the team find the Charles River Killer this time? Is this the work of a copy-cat killer out to settle a score with Kate? You will have to read the book to find out. Make a pot of your favorite beverage, you'll be up for a while reading. I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of this book.
This was my first read by Robin Mahle, but it was not one of my favorite books. I really like to give new authors, that I haven't read, a chance. I did, and this is what I thought.
This book had way too many characters in it to suit me. So many that I couldn't keep track of who was who. It had a good storyline, but the book as way too long. The whole thing could have been told in a three hour read. It got really interesting toward the end, and then nothing. I was actually disappointed. It didn't really end. It left you to kind of decide the outcome on your own.. Not my kind of book. I won't read another one by this author.
Another fantastic Kate Reid thriller. I was drawn right into this book and enjoyed the mystery and interaction between the characters. It took a while to figure out exactly who two of the characters were and the back and forth in time made the suspense that much better. The BAU is a good team and work well together. However, sometimes you have to wonder about Quinn and why he questions Kate so much. Overall, this book was very realistic, the characters and plot were great and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Five star thriller.
A body is found and the team is called in, more bodys appear and they dig deep (figuratively) to find the previous serial killer and the copy cat one. With her boss/mentor still trying to get her to open up on the Hendrick's case, she is finding the similarities almost too much.
The only thing I disliked about this book was the flashbacks with no warning, a simple date line on the story would have helped me.
To The Bone (Kate Reid #9) by Robin Mahle I like Kate Reid, and she has experienced a lot since book 1. This reader found Kate to be more fragile than expected by book 9. The sequence of events at the end did not sit well with me, the whole aim of the joint task force was to arrest all the villains; not to give anyone closure or redemption/explanation why they did what they did. I would have liked the flash back chapters to have been marked as such. A solid story, 3 and half stars.

This was an interesting story about the FBI. Everyday these men and women work to keep our country free from evil. Monsters like those portrayed in this novel are walking around us every day and people like Kate Reid and the members of the BAU keep us safe. This snapshot, while fiction, does shed light on our unsung heroes. This is a great book about one of our least appreciated crime fighting organizations.
Robin is a great story teller, but there were several things not so good about this book.. I only kept reading because I wanted to see the murderers caught. The language was horrible, not only the bad guys but also the agents. Also there were so many agents I kept getting confused. The relationships between them seemed to be a filler and dragged the story. Switching time periods without warning was also confusing. Not my favorite Robin Mahler book.
This was an intense and extremely complex story that had the tragedies of the past, as well as tragedies that were happening that resembled the previous murders. One problem was that none of the Agents or Detectives knew just how much tragedy one man had caused, or was still causing, albeit in a much different way than before. It's certainly not a story to be missed. I would recommend this book, series, and author.
Once again Mahle delivers a page turning book! A construction site is alarmed as it uncovers bones that have been there awhile - but then recent bones begin to appear. Who is killing & why? An awful childhood with mysteries surrounding it - can this lead to murders? Grab this book for a page turning read!
Kate Reid struggles with both her past and a colleague who presses her for disturbing pieces of a harrowing previous case. Will his digging shatter her ability to contribute to the current case or will she become the key player in the solution? An excellent FBI police procedural. Well done Robin Mahle.
To the Bone by Robin Mahle is book number nine in the Kate Reid series. I love this series. In the beginning, Kate was a policeman and now she is an FBI profiler. In each book she is instrumental in solving that book’s crime. Love Kate. If you like crime novels, this is a series you don’t want to miss!
I sort of enjoyed the book. It wasn't bad but it wasn't great either. There were a lot of characters and I had to read the first two chapters twice to try and short them all out. Some of the FBI actions didn't make sense and some really basic police follow-up wasn't done a few times that left me shaking my head.
At the beginning of the story I was a little confused about who all the characters were. It seemed apparent to me that there was an expectation that I had read the previous books in the series. I kept reading and got them all figured out. Other than this bit of confusion at the beginning of the story, I really enjoyed the book.
How would you react if you dug up old human bones???
This is book 9 of the Kate Reid mystery series and I love this entire book and series. Any person who loves reading mysteries with suspense, thrills and murder will also like this book and series. Gave 5 stars. It was very exciting.
I enjoyed this book. The amount of suspense was just right, it wasn't to the point of buying your finger nails but it kept me interested in all the details of what had happened years ago and the results so many years later. Lots of different characters with hidden depths that makes you want to read her other books to find out more about them.
A cold serial killer case in Boston . The BAU team get involved. When a more recent killing is found major questions come up . I like this series . However I keep finding typos and grammar that do not feel correct . Are these educated professionals or a street gang. The author treats them as the latter.
While I’m completely invested in this Erie’s and love the mysteries and lives portrayed, I’m missing any sort of romance. Nick and Kate are together and no, this isn’t a romantic suspense but throw me a bone! I look forward to the next one.
Another great read from the one & only Great Robin Mahle! The only complaint I have is having to wait for more Kate Reid and Lacy Merrick! I have read every single book this wonderful lady has written and I highly recommend her.
Another great suspenseful crime thriller from Robin Mahle. Plenty of crimes, suspects and law enforcement agencies to keep the reader's interest for a long spell of reading enjoyment.
Love this amazing series. Can't wait to read The Kill Season. You can borrow the Kate Reed series books once a month from Amazon lending library. I also recommend The Lucy Merrick novels. There are 4 books so far in that series.
Quite a fast pace story. Too many agents with similar names and not much different except they are all busy with personal things. Kate Reid is a bit of a star but not quite completely believable, but well presented so as to make it believable. In a bit I will look for more Kate Reid stories.
Too much profanity, too cluttered with multiple time periods and multiple characters all meant to inspire excitement and mystery. It didn't. It was a real struggle to finish this book and the last I will read of this series.
Kate Reid is a FBI profiler that is part of an FBI team. They assist local police department when asked. They are usually called when the case is a complicated one. This one involved a cold case involving a in serial killer and more recently a copy cat killer.
