The aftermath of the Dragonwar has left Laynin Laithorn shaken up, with the black smoke in the sky smelling of death. All of the people were exhausted, grieving, suffering from lack of sleep. The war was over, but the dead would still be mourned. She had lost many close friends, Zannis and Luthin murdered. Things would not be the same.
She's troubled by her and Risper's part in the war. The terrible choice they had to make haunts her dreams. She wonders about their place in Dargyn as they start to rebuild. She was surprised to learn that the dragons were taking turns staying awake to guard the draakin, especially since Zannis had been killed in the dead of night while her dragon, Refa, had slept.
Laynin had to get out and walk, so she headed to town. Stopping in a bakery, people looked at her distrustfully. When the customers left, the baker chatted with her and got her rolls bagged for her. She left and a boy came up with a note for her saying “Meet me at the tavern at eight tonight.” She ate her rolls saying she would not go, but knowing she would.
As she walked along, talking in her mind to Risper, she didn’t notice anything until a hand grabbed her and pulled her into the shadows. To her surprise it was Travin Honsan! He told her General Sandvaal was going to send Travin’s head back to Tarlu Rosharias, so he had to leave. But the General’s men were everywhere and he couldn’t get past them, so he came back. Now Travin wonders if he has a place at all, or if his choices will make his life forfeit as soon as they find him.
Now that Dargyn has seen the darker side of the dragons and the magin, can they forget and be grateful the war is over or will fear create a rift greater than the country has ever seen? Whether they realize it or not, the dragons did protect them and many people still walking around would have been killed without the dragons. But it was easy to blame them. She purchased food at the tavern for Travin and returned to him.
What will the future bring to everyone? It seems they have a long way to go before peace returns.
