Broken Captive part 3 of Wren's story was super dark and diabolic.
It was everything thing broken and messed up wrapped up in one big dirty filthy dystopian bow.
This wasn't romantic in any shape or form and Caspian, Toby and Kieran are psychotic power hungry man-whores who lack a basic conscience or any sort of compassion and empathy.
Well, I might give Toby a pass; hes just your garden variety psycho and can even be somewhat sweet in a scary serial killer sort of way.
But the point is the story should have had me screaming for the hills it's just that extreme and wrong.
But what should turn me the hell off here did the exact opposite and made me dig in my heels for the long haul.
So I originally swung back and forth between a four and five rating here but decided to go with my gut as this was such compelling reading that I couldn't put it down: whether you love this or hate it this is one story that you won't forget in a hurry its certainly in a league all of its own in that respect.
If you think you can handle this level of dark then this one certainly delivers on that front.
Just please be aware this series is hardcore and doesn't pull its punches one little bit.

✴️ Wren is still weak AF. Considering Brenya and Claire were - despite also being Omegas - hard as nails, in their own way, Wren's behaviour is painful to read.
✴️ Not as painful to read as the men's behaviour. If I had a pound for every time an interaction with OW was described, I'd be a bloody millionaire. I'm not feeling any sort of emotional connection at all, which is making getting through the book gruelling.
✴️ This novella finished at the 84% mark and was barely 25,000 words. I'm not normally one to moan about length, but this just compounded all the other issues I had with the book. The instalments are so short, it just feels like nothing even happens in each one - yet it's been almost half a year between this one and book two.

book 3 was simply...RAW... in everything

I also have an inspiring awe towards the mute heroine...
but the describing words in the blurb are simply the reight catch of ploy and conduct going on in this book:

Broken Captive
All the Stars. ALL. OF. Them. Whenever I see new words from this author appear I stop, as quick as I can, everything I am doing in order to consume these words. Today, I happened to be in my car waiting on my son as he was grabbing our pizza. I almost left him there. As it was, I sped(why is my autocorrect telling me this isn't a word... it is the past tense of speed but I digress) all the way home risking a speeding ticket because her words are that important.
After having made it home safely, I can say that the risk of getting a ticket and almost running over a pedestrian or two, was well worth it. This might be my favorite of the series yet. The story continues right where part two left off and it was intense. However, what stood out to me the most was that in this portion of the story, there is an added insight into the characters minds as they process the plethora of emotions, many of them foreign, that they are all experiencing. In the previous books, it was inferred what they were thinking or feeling and not given much depth. In this book that changed. They were not just acting on a primal urge(well they were in some ways) but there were legitimate emotions and thought processes also at play this time. This was much needed because it gave me, as the reader, a better idea of the dynamics behind each character. The author also expanded on her exemplary worldbuilding skills and gave me a deeper appreciation of the environment that these characters live in.
I liked watching each of the Alphas (Caspian, Toby, and Kieran) vacillate and grow in regards to the connection towards Wren. To my surprise, my appreciation toward Kieran grew tremendously. A few things come out in this story that made a few of the pieces fall into place. That being said, they all still have their moments where they need to be junk punched. Wren though, she just continues to ascend towards the pinnacle of being my favorite female character from this author. Her perseverance, strength, and unwavering ability to take the fractured and broken pieces (literally and figuratively) and meld them into something even stronger is inspiring. Her unwavering devotion to her kids, all of them, had me in awe. If only every "mother" loved unconditionally like that.
This author and her words are still my versions of the "drink me" potion from Alice in Wonderland. As long as she writes, any and all the words I will continue to fall down the rabbit hole for her. I cannot wait to see where this series goes next.

*sigh* Another “White Castle” Story
Having moved back into White Castle territory, I was struck by a similarity between Addison Cain’s recent releases and this greasy fast food. For those unfamiliar with the original slider, lemme explain…
A White Castle slider (“with breaks”) consists of 4 simple ingredients:
--a small, square, soft, split bun which is sorta like a dinner roll size, except thinner
--an even smaller, square, flat, holey burger patty which is sorta like the swiss cheese version of a meat sample, except not as big
--a smattering of diced, cooked onions to give it some flavor
--a smear of cheddar-colored, lets-call-it-cheese which doesn’t add much flavor but does glue it all together if you opt for this “breaks” version
And…gotta say…it’s delicious. For the seconds it takes to consume. With a hangover or as a late-night-drive-thru-to-stave-off that morning hangover…? Best fucking burger ever. As a meal, though…? Eeeehhh.
Which brings me back to Addison Cain’s recent releases, and this particular one on which I’m pinning this comparison…
It’s not a meal! At best, it’s a tasty treat that’s consumed in the blink of an eye. And the book’s resemblance to a real story is about as thin as the original slider’s is to a big juicy burger.
A li’l more dissection to this analogy…
The bun: it’s a beginning and ending which should keep the story together and give a reader something to hold onto. At no point while reading, did I get the impression that this was a start or finish at all, only a specific morsel of a scene that was dragged out for as long as I could keep chewing it. Which wasn’t long. As buns go, this was flimsy, thin, and fit too neatly into a square box of same old, same old.
The meat: it’s the center of the story. With each chew on the words pressed together, a reader’s hunger should be sated with consistent action, character build, and conflict resolution. There shouldn’t be holes throughout all that, emptiness that isn’t filled with anything except more hunger. Neither should it be the single bite of one scene on repeat that this is. Literally, nothing happens in this book that didn’t happen in the last one (or in any other of Addison’s recently released series for that matter)—no action, character, resolution change whatsoever, only more holes with the same bites to swallow.
The onions: it’s the unique flavor provided by each character and scene. It should be mouthwatering and orgasmically good when used to season the meat of the story. In this case, the flavor is too one-dimensional, with no difference from one scene to another (or one book from another) as the uniqueness loses its punch after the first bite of each series.
The breaks: it’s the pace of the story, an ebb and flow that keeps a reader going. Here is the non-breaks version in which there isn’t anything slowing down the consumption of this slider of a book. The pace, much like the meat, is filled with manufactured holes—short, single line paragraphs meant to make the book seem like so much more than it is. It may take longer to flip the pages due to the stretching out of the meat, but it’s still a slider masquerading as a meal, a single-scene novella trying to look like a full story.
In the end, just as with the last bite of a slider, a reader is left with a cliffhanger and decision…stay hungry or pick up another slider?
For this reader, I’ll choose to find a real meal instead.
For Addison Cain fans and/or any reader unfamiliar with this author, please note: her standalones have been meals to me. Loved them all and will be posting reviews here at some point down the road. And her 3-book series, Alpha’s Claim, was so fabulous that it only adds to my disappoint in all the series that have followed. It was like I went to a 5-star Michelin rated steakhouse only to discover that it now serves nothing but White Castle sliders.

I guess every book ends at 84%. I don’t like that, but I will accept it, knowing that for the future. To be honest, it’s best to read these books when they are all out. I wish I knew the first book was a cliff-hanger when I started the series. The books are too small to read one at a time when they are released.
Anyhow, this one was a little different and I feel like we are getting some where finally in the fact that the Heroes are not total assholes, don’t get me wrong they are still assholes, but it’s not so much and it’s getting better.
There’s still steamy kink in this one, but there’s a little more story and a little more angst and a little more tension (more than the norm maybe?) I guess more from the heroine, so someone is getting their strength.
Overall, I’m up and down with this author. I don’t like that these books are so short and I don’t like that the books end at the 84% mark and I don’t like that not all the books are out, but what can I do? They are addictive to read.

This was way too short and completely unsatisfying. I'm irritated with the way this totally just cut off without any kind of ending.
I feel like screw this shit already. I'm gonna make myself not care how this ends. I'M DONE. That's crazy to say, I know. How will I possibly go on with my life without knowing what happens with that psychotic weirdo Toby and that sadistic asshole Kieran and that overbearing schitzo Caspian? It'll be hard i know but I'll just have to manage somehow SARCASM

I liked this much more than Silent Captive. Eager to read book 4.
Yes, the MMCs are immoral, but Addison Cain has given all the characters depth and I can't look away. I really admire Addison Cain for her ability to craft unique worlds and develop characterization.
A downside to this series is the cliff-hanger endings and relatively short page lengths, but in all honesty it doesn't bother me too much here. edit: lol it didn't bother me because I started this series in 2019 and read all these books in a matter of days. Now that I'm caught up I'm obviously irritated by this serial series.

CRACK I tell you!
The lines on the pages in this series are laced with crack~~~
The writing is so addictive that even as I was absolutely repulsed I kept reading like an addict.

Broken Captive: 2 dialing my nearest therapist stars
I feel so played by this entire series, I don't know if the author did this on purpose, but she started out this series on such an optimistic note where redemption and romance seemed far away, but possible. With every passing page she took those feelings of optimism and shredded them in a blender and threw them in my face, do I feel personally attacked? Hell yeah.
Anyway, I don't know if I should be thankful or raging at Addison Cain for creating characters that I was falling for only to make me repulsed and sickened by them one minute, and then aching to soothe them the next. I'm still reeling from the whiplash.
So we have our heroine Wren, who is mute and "defective" as an omega and has been tossed from her home to the Warrens (the slums) which is ran by Caspian the first alpha, his second Kieran and his third Toby, who have total control of the water supply(water is like drugs in this world and limited, therefore super valuable). After adjusting to her life in the Warrens, Wren adopts two boys Mikael and Alec that she cares for with all her life. When one of her boys fall ill she barters with Caspian (basically ma gurl just sold her soul to the devil and didn't realize it) with her body to save her kid.
Wren as a heroine boggles my mind, she is a huge doormat who lacks personality but has some seriously badass moments. I didn't hate her but I didn't particularly like her. I felt bad for her whereas I should have been sobbing for her had Cain given her more personality and maybe a more permanent backbone that shows up more than once in a blue moonand let me tell yall about our gurl's golden pussy, her clutch got not one, not two but three psychopathic alphas hooked. Wren's deficit in personality is more than made up by the three big bad (mad) alphas in spades.
The three crazy mofo alphas Caspian, Kieran, and Toby are so distinctive, each brimming with their own brand of crazy and each subjugating Wren with their varying depravities.
“You think of yourself as something other than a whore?” She swallowed, blinked, and refused to shake her head. “You just let a sexual deviant jam his fist into your pussy with no complaint. I watched. I liked watching. Just as much as I’ll like watching your cunt eat up the treat he has in store later.”
Caspian: The first alpha of the pack, demands utter submission from everyone, and even the slightest threat to his power is ruthlessly punished (think classic megalomaniac) and NOBODY and I mean NOBODY likes this mofo. In the beginning of the first book it was Caspian who had seemed the most redeemable, so imagine my surprise when my dude here goes from your run of the mill tragic alphahole to irredeemable psycho. I went from liking him the best to HATING HIM the most.
Kieran: The second of the pack, mommy issues galore with a healthy side dish of self-serving psycho, he goes from being the most irredeemable to being somewhat reedemable, sort of.
Toby: Lets just say someone needs to end this guy as a public service duty. Talk about bathshit cray cray.
“There was something very wrong with a man who would subject himself to hours of self-torture”
And even though Cain never really reveals any of the alphas backstories and only reveals scraps (never have I seen an author more reluctant to give a backstory lol) here and there, you can still feel how broken and deviant all three are from their interactions with Wren. Kudos to Cain for the show not tell, many authors have a tendency to give you a sob story and tell you how broken their alphas are instead of showing you.
I held out hope for these three until I just morally couldn't anymoreI held out for three books says a lot about my moral compass smh. I clutched my heart in my hands and waited for these three to get better, to be less psychotic and more human but they only got worse. All three are equally terrible. Cain is attempting to redeem one of them, but I am not sticking around to find out how that ends up until she releases all the installments.
Not one of these three alphas feel any genuine emotions or tenderness towards Wren as another being, I genuinely doubt they even see her or anyone beside themselves as another being. Wren and everyone else is only to be used and used and used until there is absolutely nothing left. Cain uses sex to really drive this point home, there is a lot of sex in these books but they are by no means gratuitous. Sex is very tactically used to show how Wren for all their obsession with her is just another “cumdumster” to them. The reader could feel how the sex scenes went from being hot to evoking feelings of nausea.

In my deranged head I have come to see this series as foreplay of selfish self-serving domination, where every dosage of cruelty is stronger than the next bringing us closer to the climax that will result inhopefully someone's death (I think it should be two someone's death).
This is by no means a romance story, or one that even holds the slightest bit of warmth, but the dynamics and power plays between the alphas and Wren and even among the alphas themselves keep you intrigued and on edge wondering just how much worse could these men get.

I highly recommend listening to Psycho by Baekhyun while reading this book.

I feel so played by this entire series, I don't know if the author did this on purpose, but she started out this series on such an optimistic note where redemption and romance seemed far away, but possible. With every passing page she took those feelings of optimism and shredded them in a blender and threw them in my face, do I feel personally attacked? Hell yeah.
Anyway, I don't know if I should be thankful or raging at Addison Cain for creating characters that I was falling for only to make me repulsed and sickened by them one minute, and then aching to soothe them the next. I'm still reeling from the whiplash.
So we have our heroine Wren, who is mute and "defective" as an omega and has been tossed from her home to the Warrens (the slums) which is ran by Caspian the first alpha, his second Kieran and his third Toby, who have total control of the water supply(water is like drugs in this world and limited, therefore super valuable). After adjusting to her life in the Warrens, Wren adopts two boys Mikael and Alec that she cares for with all her life. When one of her boys fall ill she barters with Caspian (basically ma gurl just sold her soul to the devil and didn't realize it) with her body to save her kid.
Wren as a heroine boggles my mind, she is a huge doormat who lacks personality but has some seriously badass moments. I didn't hate her but I didn't particularly like her. I felt bad for her whereas I should have been sobbing for her had Cain given her more personality and maybe a more permanent backbone that shows up more than once in a blue moon
The three crazy mofo alphas Caspian, Kieran, and Toby are so distinctive, each brimming with their own brand of crazy and each subjugating Wren with their varying depravities.
“You think of yourself as something other than a whore?” She swallowed, blinked, and refused to shake her head. “You just let a sexual deviant jam his fist into your pussy with no complaint. I watched. I liked watching. Just as much as I’ll like watching your cunt eat up the treat he has in store later.”
Caspian: The first alpha of the pack, demands utter submission from everyone, and even the slightest threat to his power is ruthlessly punished (think classic megalomaniac) and NOBODY and I mean NOBODY likes this mofo. In the beginning of the first book it was Caspian who had seemed the most redeemable, so imagine my surprise when my dude here goes from your run of the mill tragic alphahole to irredeemable psycho. I went from liking him the best to HATING HIM the most.
Kieran: The second of the pack, mommy issues galore with a healthy side dish of self-serving psycho, he goes from being the most irredeemable to being somewhat reedemable, sort of.
Toby: Lets just say someone needs to end this guy as a public service duty. Talk about bathshit cray cray.

And even though Cain never really reveals any of the alphas backstories and only reveals scraps (never have I seen an author more reluctant to give a backstory lol) here and there, you can still feel how broken and deviant all three are from their interactions with Wren. Kudos to Cain for the show not tell, many authors have a tendency to give you a sob story and tell you how broken their alphas are instead of showing you.

Not one of these three alphas feel any genuine emotions or tenderness towards Wren as another being, I genuinely doubt they even see her or anyone beside themselves as another being. Wren and everyone else is only to be used and used and used until there is absolutely nothing left. Oh my word, this is an absolutely amazing series.
More Caspian, Kieran, Toby and Wren goodness, or badness depending on your point of view. Oh Wren I do love you, with your sheer determination and your love for your children. She is fabulous and even when the men are at their pigheaded worst she never feels like a victim or a weak heroine. In truth, and despite what she sometimes believes, Wren's only brokenness is in her fingers, literally. She shines like the most precious glittering gem, despite the very real mud and filth that surrounds her.
And Kieran, oh Kieran, what wondrous spell-casting has Ms C achieved to lift you from most reviled and hateful of men to a tortured and vulnerable hero. Oh his truth will break your heart and cast his vitriol in a whole new light. He is now risen head and shoulders above the mental tsunami that is Toby and the gluttonous well of self-blinkered ignorance that is Caspian.
But great sorrow filled my heart that this book had to end, and on a dagger point of a cliff-hanger too. Nope it isn't a trilogy, as I think most of us had suspected. So whilst part of me bemoans the fact that the tale is still not complete, a larger part rejoices in the knowledge that there is still more good badness to be had with this quartet.

I feel like nothing happened in this novel. It was THAT short and it makes me angry. Why so short? why not write a full-legth novel and be done with it? I don't understand. Oh no, yes I understand.

Oh wow, this series gets better with each book! I have to say, this one was intense. It was so dark and painful and angsty. So much torment in this! It was a little satisfying to see the men starting to struggle with feelings for Wren, to see them beginning to be uncomfortable with how they've treated her, and with the unfamiliar emotions waking in them. I still hate them, but I think I may be starting to soften towards them. I know Caspian is the biggest jerk of them all, but he's also the one she feels strongest for. My heart belongs to Kieran though. He is a jerk too, fighting tooth and nail not to feel for her... but when you know his past, it all makes sense. The strength of her love and bond for her "kids" is beautiful and heart touching. If only all kids had someone like her in their lives! As long as you're comfortable with dark romance, this is a must read!

After the final straw in the book #2, Wren has gone berserk. Toby has claimed her and now, Caspian gnawed on her. She's under their "care" and couldn't escape their evil grasp. Broken and confused, Wren let herself playing the submissive Omega for the children's sake.
Caspian is going on denial after he left claim mark on Wren. He's keeping the man-whoring attitude even in front of Wren. But she couldn't do anything about it. Then, there's Toby who is almost spoiled her and vowed to be the best for her than other Alphas. Kieran is still in pissed off attitude as ever.

These books cause me to want to rip my hair out strand by strand. Wren is an idiot. It's basically her falling for her tormentors. And while sometimes that trope can make me love the story, this one just doesn't.
The Alphas continue to defile her and demean her. They treat her like she isn't even worth as much as the mud that the city is sinking into. But in their minds they're having debating thoughts about what they feel for her. Toby is a fucking psycho. Kerian is a jackass who uses her the worst out of all of them because of his mommy issues. And Caspian is a deranged fucking dick who can't put into words what he feels for her. He doesn't understand the feelings so what does he do? He blames her for his warring feelings and takes it out on her.
This series has just pushed all my buttons and not in a good way either. I can't wait to be done with the 4th book. Because I can just see that Wren's going to get over all the bullshit they've been pulling these past three books and they're going to "live happily ever after". Fuck that. I'm so glad these books are so short so there's not much more to the series I have to go through.

I am so disappointed in this book. I loved the first two books in the series and was excited to read the third installment. However, I feel as though this book was written by a different person. There is less detail and a lot of telling without showing. I am hoping that the next book will be less rushed and more detailed.

OMG! It's finally here! I've been needing this book since I finished the last book, and I need the next one now. Too bad it doesn't work that way. I really need a time machine so that I can get all of Addison Cain's books without having to wait for her to write them. But then, the instant gratification may kill me, so I guess I might as well wait.
Wren is recuperating from her rebellion, and Caspian didn't go easy on her. She hurts, all over. And now, she's dealing with all the effects that Caspian and Toby's actions caused. Of course, they don't seem to be hurting the guys any, it's all on her. Isn't that always the life of an Omega? Kieran, though, he still seems to hate her, so that's all normal.
There are so many changes. SO. MANY. It kept my head spinning with everything going on. I had to go back and reread a couple of times just because I wanted to make sure that I didn't miss anything, I was that excited. I just barreled right through the book.
I still think that Caspian should die in a lake of hellfire and lava. In fact, I think that even more than ever. I hate Toby slightly less than before. He's at least trying. The surprising thing to me is that I'm starting to like Kieran. Broken Captive
I am not sure what I can say that I haven't already said about Addison Cain's books. This book made me have ALL the feelings. It's as filthy as you would expect but it's so much more! This book and the characters that populate it's pages live and breathe and sneak into your heart when you least expect it. Amidst all the mud and filth and steam there's real soul. This book broke my heart and yet gave me enough hope that it would maybe be mended at some point. Wren is an amazing strong heroine who is willing to do anything to save her boys. I love character development for the alphas. As much as I wanted to hate them (some more then others, I am looking at you Kieran), Addison sprinkled just enough humanity, humility, hurt and raw emotion in them that I found myself rooting for them as well. I only wish this book didn't have to end so soon so that I could live in this world a bit longer.

Slight improvement from the last installment but it felt like there wasn't much in the way of character or plot development. Also, the amount of OW involved after having mated made me want to gag.
Removing a star for abrupt ending and cliffhanger because at this point, given the length of the "book", it feels like a middle finger to the readers. The serial trend is annoying on its own but when installments aren't released in a short time frame from one another it doesn't make sense. I don't want to wait half a year for 90 pages that end in a cliffhanger.

You’re killing me, Smalls! GAHHHH! This series has me twisted up in knots and I am torn between needing to know how it all ends and dreading the last book being published. Wren/Jax is such a strong character and has endured so much without being broken. The ultimate mother, she is willing to sacrifice everything for her children. She is easy to love, unlike the males in the story. Brutal Caspian, crazed Toby, and beautiful, broken Kieran are difficult to love, but nonetheless they tug at the readers’ heart strings. You get the feeling these are creatures who have never known love or kindness, so are at a loss to understand an Omega willingly sacrificing herself for those she loves. They crave that connection, but have no clue how to get it for themselves. They are emotional toddlers, willfully destroying everything around them when they don’t get their way. Despite their abominable behavior, I found my heart softening toward them.
This is a DARK, disturbing story that is filled with potential triggers. Take the warnings seriously. This is not a “bad boy with a heart of gold” story...at least, not yet.

As always, I'm in awe of Addison Cain's world-building skills. And all the deep DEEP feels with this.

Addison Cain is addictive. This book is the latest installment in her Wren’s Song series. It is built in the Omegaverse world. Wren is an Omega who captured the attention of an Alpha pack who controls the water of their world. Three alphas are bent into bending her to their will.
What is so cool about Addison’s books including this series is that it explores the importance of choice. When your body betrays you, when genetics say you have to submit, when this is the way of your world... what will you be willing to give to have a choice? Freedom of choice is sometimes an illusion but when taken away, makes us less human.
This evokes all the emotions... it makes you feel for the broken monster, makes you root for the underdog and makes one hope for a happily ever after. I can’t wait for the next book.

Loved it but
I really love all of Addison 's books. This book was really good so I will not give it a bad rating even though I'm highly disappointed that I paid 2.99 for a book that ends at 84%.
This has happened before and also with other Authors, it makes me want to rethink purchasing the rest even though I want to find out what happens with Wren.

Mehhh. When the cover shows a woman being worshipped by her men but the actual story is far from that.
So I got my hands on the first three books and now I regret staying up all night reading this because I wanted to clear out my TBR shelf. There's a fourth book and apparently this series is incomplete?! But here's where I say, "the end" for me.
The writing was odd but flowed well enough at some parts of the books. The heroes were obnoxious. I've never met reverse harem heroes that I've hated. So many OW scenes with the main alpha which was easier to accept, especially because Wren is more or less unresponsive towards the men. The way this book ended was weird. One of the guy's brought another woman and bleached her hair to look like the heroine and was holed up in his room with her for weeks, after Wren is thought to be dead/missing. This same guy was an absolute dick to her since the beginning and it pisses me off at how "attached" he got to her. 🙄
And what got me extremely confused is that everyone calls the heroine Jax, but the author calls her Wren! Like what's with that whole thing? And who's this mysterious guy she barely mentioned in book 2 about being the guy she never got to share herself with? And there goes my night. No sleep and endless questions!🤦🏾♀️

These three Alpha's have truly put Wren through enough, Wren wants to be treated like a precious Omega, but they don't how to behave it's a tough world that live in. Caspian trying so hard to be the first Alpha and wanting her submission and knowing she is only pleasing him for her boys, Kerrigan is lost about her he wants her love desperately. but so ashamed to admit it he wants and needs her and Toby he's not afraid to let everyone know that Wren is his mate, but come on he's kind of creepy. Wren does have feelings for them but the way they treat her she keeps her feelings in the mud. But what an ending, this is a hard dirty messy romance. This series I will read again:))
