TO: The guy who dumped me because of my career
FROM: The woman hired to save yours
RE: I am 150,000% over you.

Alastair,

I’m on the 11:14 train out of London, so I’ll be there by 3:00. To make this as painless as possible, I thought it would help to establish key ground rules:

1. No rehashing our past relationship. Yes, we were engaged, but it’s been twelve years and I’m over you.
2. I’m very good at my job and that job is to help you shed the “reclusive” part of the whole “reclusive rock star” vibe you’ve got going on. Brace yourself.
3. My plan is to have this wrapped up by Friday, so save your smoldering looks until I’m gone, please. (I assume you still smolder?) I’m immune now. See item #1.
4. My cousin is getting married and guess who's a bridesmaid? Funny, huh? Almost as funny as the fiancée you dumped because you thought she was married to her job now saving yours.

Always a bridesmaid, never a bride. Except almost. That one time.
Remi

P.S. Have I mentioned I’m totally, completely 150,000% over you?

Remi Cooper, 34, is a workaholic publicist. Alastair Wells, 32, is a songwriter and up-and-coming musician whose agent has just hired his ex-fiancé to advance his career. Back in each other’s orbit, the two have the chance to revisit old mistakes and future possibilities.

“All it would take is a kiss to ignite this spark flickering between us. Like a match in the middle of a California summer, I’m pretty sure we could burn for days.”

This is a slow burn romance with low steam. I’ll admit I was a bit disappointed it wasn’t spicier as I think it might have helped enhance their chemistry. None the less, I appreciated that it avoided many romance clichés as well as OW/OM drama. The writing is solid, and both the premise and characters had potential.

Alastair isn’t a romance rockstar stereotype. Refreshingly, he’s quiet, low key, and not a manwhore. He seemed like a pretty genuine and down-to-earth guy.

Remi is dedicated and hard-working. That’s both a strength and a flaw for her. There’s a lot of focus on Remi reevaluating her career and doing some soul-searching with her 35th birthday approaching, and the story is told from her sole first person POV.

I would have really liked to have read some chapters from Alastair’s POV and more scenes of Remi and Alastair together. I think both would have gone a long way in showing what he was feeling through this process of them getting a second chance, but also to feel the connection between them more fully. It was clear they shared a past; more development of them in the present would have benefited the romantic angle.

The blurb made this title look like a lot of fun. I wish the story would have captured more of that. While the majority of it kept me engaged, there was a little zing that just felt like it was missing. In places there’s more ‘tell’ than ‘show.’

I was also left feeling a little unsatisfied with the Sarah factor. For the role she played in Alastair’s life, I felt like she should have been more central to the story, as in I needed to see more development of her relationship with Remi if I was going to truly envision their HEA, which I wasn’t a hundred percent convinced of based off the pacing of the story combined with their lack of time together in the present. Ultimately I envisioned them more of a casual couple than a family.

One of the things I love most about Brenda's writing, is how honest her characters feel. They're relatable and real and had me rooting for them from the first page. This second chance romance has all the feels, with a down-to-earth rock star and a feisty heroine determined to rediscover herself. This book was an absolute treat to read!

This is a story of second chances. Remi Cooper, 34, is one serious workaholic PR publicist from America who moved to London for her job. Alastair Wells, 32, is a songwriter and is also on the verge of music stardom as a budding rocker in the UK. These two used to be lovers and almost married. Something occurred years prior which broke them apart. Now Remi is back in Alastair's orbit, for her PR firm is hired to work with Alastair which means Remi is assigned to him. Spending time with her ex-fiancé isn’t at all high on her to do list but she’s a professional and she’ll do what is needed to be done. Her work has been her life up until it isn’t anymore.

This is a very slow burn romance with low impact steam appeal read. I’
admit I was disappointed that it wasn’t at all steamer or sexier as it could have been for it would have definitely helped enhance the main characters chemistry and connection. I will say i do appreciate that it avoided the other romance genres which would have sent this story tumbling into a deeper freefall. The writing is good, and the plot had good potential. It just needed more pizzazz and steam to make this story go from good to amazing for the story to pop otherwise this is just a solid meh in my opinion.

My Rating: 3.5 stars *****

Maid in England is a classic romance story, with enough detail in the plot line to keep me interested until the end. I'm unsure about the title and it's relation to the story, but in any case, Maid in England was an enjoyable read.

I loved these characters. Both Remi and Alistair are relatable and likeable. Remi is a hard working American publicist, who has moved to London for her job. Alistair is a former boyfriend who is on the verge of musical stardom. Their chemistry is palpable, but their history causes complications. The story is told from Remi's POV, and being inside her head was fun!

The pace of the story was lagging, in my opinion. I kept waiting for a big climax within the story, but it never really came. I would also have enjoyed more sizzle in the sex scenes. This novel contains mainly fade to black scenes.

Maid in England is a contemporary romance that made up for it's lack of sizzle with a romance that was sweet and made me smile.

A story of second chances. Remi has worked hard for her career. She’s made a lot of sacrifices over the years to get to where she is today, one of them was her relationship with Alastair. When her PR firm is hired to work with musician, Alastair Wells, Remi is assigned to him. Spending time with her ex-fiancé isn’t too high on her list but she’s a professional and she’ll do what needs to be done. Work is her life, until it isn’t anymore.

I enjoyed Remi’s journey to finding herself. She started branching out, trying new things, and opening herself up. It was fun to witness. Then there’s Alastair with his swoon worthy moments. I really enjoyed theses two as a couple. I liked the progression of the relationship. The struggles and hang ups felt natural given their history. The added drama of, can they make it work this time, had me eager to finish.

I have to admit, part of me was a little disappointed with this book initially as with a title like Maid in England, it had me thinking possibly a Maid in Manhattan type feel with a possible Cinderella storyline. However, the book they had on the first page a feel of a fake romance set up - I was like, ok I can do this as I loved fake relationships too. Imagine my surprise when the book didn't have a fake romance angle either. This book starts with New Yorker Remi Cooper who has been living in London and working for a PR firm. She has accomplished her way up in the world by being a workaholic and sacrificing things for her career. However, it has now left her almost turning thirty-five without a romantic partner. Years ago, Remi was engaged, but the relationship didn't work out, the guy is now a prominent musician that her firm has been hired to talk to about going on tour and making more of a physical appearance. Remi has been forced to make small talk and track down her ex; the thing is though that they didn't leave on good terms and Alastair did always prefer the quiet life. While this is happening though, strange things are occurring in the firm and look like this also was a ploy to get her out of the office while the stakeholders make some big decisions. Can Remi not only do her job and get Alastair to sign up on tour but also is there a chance to rekindle their romance? Will Remi finally be able to choose between work and love and this time make the right decision despite the consequences of the choices?

Maid in England is a slow burn romance with a focus on second chances, careers, and work-life balance. The writing style was good and I liked the overall storyline. The underlying theme of work-life balance is something that many people can relate to given our ability to be connected 24 hours/day. I also really liked that Alastair wasn’t a typical rockstar either - he had his priorities straight and wasn’t a playboy womanizer and the book didn’t really center around him being or becoming a rockstar. There was a big focus on Remi’s career - more so than Alastair’s it felt like.

Upon reading the blurb, I got the impression that it would be more of a romantic comedy and while there was a little bit of humor, it was more of a serious book. I also had trouble seeing the connection between the two characters. I expected more chemistry and I just didn’t get that feeling. The book was told entirely from Remi’s POV and I would have liked to have had a few chapters from Alastair’s - perhaps that would have sold me more on the relationship. There were also moments that I felt the book dragged little bit. Overall, it is a decent read. The storyline is good, the underlying themes are good, but I did feel like it was lacking character/relationship development with some areas that dragged. I received this book as an ARC I voluntarily leave this review.

There’s a reason Brenda St John Brown is on my auto-buy list and it’s because of books like Maid in England. I know I can count on her for smart, funny, sexy stories with complex, relatable characters.

Remi and Alistair were both such great characters. While I loved the romance - learning about their history and seeing them reconnect in the present was so much fun - and I rooted for this pair easily, it was actually Remi I loved most. I loved that she really came into her own throughout the course of the book and didn’t need anyone else to do it. I admired her for taking chances and also for taking the time to figure out what she really wanted. Those are my favourite type of books. I was really rooting for her, and I was all ‘hell yeah!’ every time she triumphed. I also enjoyed watching her make friends, because as someone who’s the exact same age, I know how hard it is to make new friends.

Looking for a smart, funny, fresh second-chance romance that’s low on the angst meter but still packs an emotional punch? Maid in England is a must read!

A Publicist & A Rocker

I absolutely loved this book and the characters in it. Second Chance love stories have a special place in my heart; that show to me that if a person is meant to be in your life they will. I loved everything about it. It was sexy but not overly sexed (if you know what I mean.). Alister was dreamy as ever....who wouldn’t love a British rocker??? I loved watching Remi grow as a person and become who she truly was meant to be. I want more from these two. You can bet Alister pretty much shot to the top 10 of the book boyfriend list....

....Happy Reading!!!

I love anything by Brenda St.John Brown so of course I'm going to say nice things about this book but that doesn't lessen the review any. This is a spin off from the Castle Calder series which I adored and it was lovely to have tidbits from beloved characters at the same time I was falling for new ones.
Remi and Alistair's story was compelling and heart felt and kept me turning the page.
This book was made for bookworms who love to curl up, shut out the world and fall in love!
So to my fellow bookies, pour the wine, open the chocolate, ignore the kids and enjoy!

This was an enjoyable book to read! It is a story about finding yourself and a second chance to get it right this time, who freaking doesn't love that!

Characters:
Alistair- super swoon worthy singer/songwriter that is a bit of a recluse, for good reason, but perhaps willing to get wider known. He used to date Remi back in college and they even got engaged before it all fell apart.
Remi- a successful PR agent that has dedicated her life to her work and has put everything else on hold- love, friends, and herself. She dated Alistair way back when but they broke up when it seemed as if her career was more important than their relationship.

Plot:
Oh second chance goodness! Remi's firm is hired by Alistair's agent to help increase his image and getting him more well known to be able to nab a huge spot in a festival. Remi has not seen Alistair in over 10 years and fears this is not going to go well, but she would do anything for her job.
It was a bit icy in the beginning but with finding Alistair again, she actually ended up finding herself even more so. There are a lot of twists in turns in this book which are pretty freaking interesting, but who doesn't love a good finding yourself book, am I right?!

Steam:
This one was a little so-so for me. The reader can definitely see that there is chemistry between Alistair and Remi, but to me if felt more of a familiar kind of way. Let me be clear, there is NOTHING wrong with that, in fact, I believe it actually went along better with the story line. I would have liked a little bit more heat though.

All in All:
This was an enjoyable story to read and I do recommend it. I am giving this one a 4 outta 5 stars!

PS: I received an ARC of this book in return of my honest feedback!

This was such a lovely second-chance romance.

"I forget everything except the fact that I used to love this man with my whole heart. And I've never loved anyone the same way since."

Remi Cooper is a successful publicist. She fought her way hard to get to where she is today, at the cost of her personal life. When her work brings her face to face with her ex-fiance of twelve years ago, it churns up lots of things for her and makes her question what she wants out of life.

"I was more miserable without you than I ever thought I was with you."

Alastair Wells is not the same man he was when he broke their engagement - his life is pretty different these days. At first unfriendly and unwelcoming, he warms up to Remi pretty quickly. A recluse by nature, he accepts her help and ideas to catapult his career to a different level. However, when things heat up again between them, will his new-found level of fame be the cause of more heartbreak?

"In his gaze I see the past. The present. The future. All of the heartbreak. All of the love. All of the possibility."

I really enjoyed Remi and Alastair's romance. I loved their tentative steps towards friendship and the obvious chemistry and connection between them. I loved that Alastair was so willing for more between them, no matter the obstacles. Remi is a workaholic but her re-connection with Alastair is the catalyst for a reevaluation of her life.

I've never read this author before but I enjoyed her fluid style and the steady rhythm of her words. The characters were well-drawn and engaging. The story was a little bit angsty but heartwarming. Will definitely read more of her books.

Remi is a soon-to-be 35 year old successful publicist in London. She is given the task of making talented area singer/songwriter Alistair Wells visible, in order for his agent to secure a high profile gig as opening act on a more famous singer's tour. She hesitates, since she and Alistair were engaged once upon a time, but he broke up with her 12 years ago for putting her job above everything else.

He doesn't seem happy about working with her, although he comes around to the idea. As his career is taking off, though, Remi is having an epiphany about her own life and career and reevaluating everything.

These two have a lot to work through, though. With his musical career exploding and taking him away, can they make things work a second time?

It was so nice getting little glimpses of characters from the Castle Calder series, although this is completely a standalone and you definitely don't feel like you are missing information if you haven't read those books first. (Although I highly recommend reading them, they are fantastic.) I did really like Remi and Alistair both. Remi's assistant Vera and Alistair's friend Amy are both wonderful characters as well.

I can't think of one thing I didn't like about this book. I admit I was confused about the title at first, because there is no maid in the story. But then it dawned on me... Remi is a bridesmaid in her cousin's wedding. *lightbulb moment*

Overall: Get this book! It was an engaging, lovely read.

ONE CAPTIVATING TREAT!!!
OMG! Talk about simmering. If you like living on the edge with a plethora of events, emotions and intense desires, congrats my friends you've found it. Twisted, twinned and put through the wringer as you watch so deeply immersed and frozen to your seat, holding your breath waiting for the other shoe to drop. Drop it did. One exciting, well paced, heart pounding, pulse racing, page turning delight that demands your full undivided attention and you follow willingly. All the drama, uncertainty, fear and mistrust, throw in a little suspense and tension step back mesmerized as this bad boy comes roaring to life beautifully. Twists and turns, ups and downs, along with a few glitches, bumps and bruises that rock this read with every word. Following the characters along, witnessing their personalities transform and blend as their past and present collide with a slow simmering chemistry that grows as sparks start to fly. The characters were so realistic, intriguing and complex with a undeniable attraction between the two main characters. The scenes were so vividly detailed and descriptive it gives the illusion you were right there in ground zero with them. Brenda didn't skip a beat bringing this bad boy together perfectly. Remarkable job Brenda, thanks for sharing this bad boy with us.

👍👍 What a great plot and array of characters to this 💞 second chance romance! The tentative reunion and subsequent interaction after years apart for Remi the heroine and Alistair the 🎶musician hero were great, romantic with a tinge of heat, but I really identified with heroine Remi's work woes and her lonely lifestyle as she focused on building her career. Her colleagues Jeb and Rex's attitude towards her position in the firm -- I suspect it's just as influenced by her being a woman and expecting her to be accommodating because of it(!) as it is because of her lack of a social life. That it so typical and relatable and I became her fan when I read how Remi handled it.

From videographer/barmaid Amy to Alistair's canine companion to Vera the PA and Paula the charity worker, the author created some great secondary characters for Remi. I also appreciated the real life flavor of the hitches in their relationship, from competing schedules and career priorities to working with a potentially hostile daughter.

The story's also well-written and properly edited. I only mention this because with a host of romances out there with sketchy editing, this book was a welcome exception!😊

I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.

I received a review copy of the book before release for an honest review.

This was a very different story than I was expecting. It is part of series but also stands alone. I have never read this author or this series and I easily followed along.

This story takes place in England and Remi is a publicist to the stars. She is a partner with two other guys and she gets handled a new client, a Rockstar wants to work with her ex fiancée, Alistair. Remi goes after the client in a small village town in England and that is where she meets Alistair and has to convince him to make his image sexy so he can join the concert tour.

Alistair and Remi were in love some 12 years ago but when she chose work over him he dumped her and they both have never gotten over the other, so sparks fly when they meet again and have to work together. Meanwhile Remi's job is having some issues so she has to decide what she wants to do with her life.

This was a great story told in just Remi's voice. At times this was very frustrating to me because I wanted Alistairs opinion and thoughts. That said, it will hook you until you read the last page. It is very well written and a fun 2nd chance and enemies to lovers storyline.

Crazy Good Romcom!
Maid in England, a romcom written by author Brenda St John Brown was definitely a delicious read. I was infatuated with Remi, the thirty-five year old publicist and singer/ex-fiancé, Alastair. Oh, and Ziggy the one eyed dog whose tail wagging spoke volumes and emitted tones of emotions.
I felt for Remi when she came to the realization that she was a workaholic and all that it cost her, as she looks at her ex of twelve years. But, she takes steps to evaluate her priorities while she has just launched Alastair’s music career and possibly even further away from hers.
While this may seem heavy, the author approaches this storyline with humor when needed with the right supporting characters be they two legged or four legged, or food...doughnuts! Maturity seems to be the key here for these two to have their HEA.
This was such a well written story that I’m recommending it for your reading enjoyment. I am also leaving this review for your consideration.

Maid in England
By Brenda St. John Brown
4 stars
Reviewed on behalf of 3 Degrees of Fiction Book Blog

Maid in England was a nice contemporary romance read. I haven’t read anything by this author before and I really liked her writing style. The one thing I am a little unsure of is how the title fits in with the story but apart from that it was an enjoyable read with a good storyline.
I liked Remi and Alistair and was fully invested in their story, I was sure that they would see each other again and all the feelings would come back quickly but I liked to slow burn of the rekindling of their relationship. I did like Remi; she is one of those characters who you just automatically find yourself rooting for.
The book was more of a sweet romance and not so much a steamy romance but I really liked that about it and it nice to read and uncomplicated romance read once in a while. The story did have a few twists and turns in it that helped keep my interest throughout.
Overall I really enjoyed this read and would love to read more from this author again in the future.

MAID IN ENGLAND is the first Brenda St John Brown book I have read, and I enjoyed her writing. The writing flows easily and I felt the pacing was consistent. Admittedly I was somewhat confused by the title and book blurb; I don’t think they accurately reflect the story told, but don't let that put you off. The book is more serious that I expected but it was a pleasant read.

I enjoyed Remi’s story and thought her character development was realistic throughout. I particularly liked that the author had Remi “save” herself when she was experiencing her work/life crisis.

I enjoyed Remi and Alastair’s relationship but I wanted more of it. It felt like we got the bare bones. As a result, it was hard to feel fully invested in their relationship.

One of the sweetest relationships in the book was between Remi and Ziggy, the dog. Their “conversations” were fun to read.

MAID IN ENGLAND is an entertaining, undemanding read that’s just the thing when you want to escape into a book for a few hours.

I really enjoyed this cute little romantic comedy. It was the perfect second chance romance, I felt like it was a second chance for BOTH of them, Alastair AND Remi, neither of them were perfect in the past, this is a chance for them to fix the mistakes they made and decide whats important to them going forward. Sometimes the path to love isn't as clear cut as we'd like it to be. Sometimes there is no road to be traveled to where we want to get to. If we want to get there bad enough we have to work for it. This book respects and reflects that. It showcases the personal growth from 12 years worth of what-ifs brilliantly and I'm sure everyone will be rooting for Remi and Al to figure it all out. I also loved that while it didnt shy away from the dirty bits, they weren't too overly detailed. This is a book you can recommend to any friend or family member with limited blushing. Can't wait to see what the author has to follow up this thoughtful fun story.

In Short
- Maid in England is a charming and sweet read.
- Alastair is a closed book and wouldn't have liked to get to know him more.
- Remi and Alastair go on a real soul searching journey.

In Long
Maid in England is a sweet book which charmed my socks off. There are some irresistibly sweet scenes which makes you want to say 'aww' a loud.

It is a slower paced book and because of this it took me a while to get in to and I felt like I didn't click much with the two main characters. That said they both do go on a journey in this book and Remi is hopelessly innocent and funny in many scenes.

Alastair is quite a closed book through much of this book and I felt like maybe it just took too long for his character to come out more because, when it did, I really enjoyed this read much more.

Despite the many sweet scenes I really did crave a bit more steam and chemistry. I felt like they just needed a lift me up between them and this could have been the answer. Something was missing for me and maybe this would have made them feel a bit more intense.

Final Thoughts
Maid in England isn't one which had me holding my breath and although, for me, it didn't have that wow factored, I still enjoyed this charming, sweet read with two characters which went on a life changing journey together.

First of all, I’m wanted to thank Give Me Books Promotions and Brenda St. John Brown for giving me the opportunity to read this wonderful read! I’ve read one of her Castle Calder books before and this book is set in the same world where some of the characters from those books are mentioned which was wonderful to read!
I adored the backstory that Remi and Alistair have in the book because it felt like one of those books that I really needed to read. If something’s meant to be, it’ll happen eventually which is what I’ve been telling myself for the past few months! I enjoyed the plot twists throughout the book and there’s also a bunch of characters that I absolutely need to know more about so that I can figure out why they are the way they’re written because some of them were extremely interesting!
This was the book that took me out of my reading rut and one I highly recommend if you want all the tension that builds up to sweet moments!

4.75 Stars!

This is some of Brown’s best writing! I loved everything about this second-chance romance - the fabulous characters, the story arc, and the overall writing. The first couple of chapters of Maid in England were compelling, but by the time I reached 20%, I looked forward to picking it back up every time I had to set it down. The romance was fairly low angst with conflict that resolved naturally and realistically. Alistair started out as my favorite kind of broody hero who softens as he spends more time with the one that got away. Remi was a fabulous heroine with a narrative that I enjoyed immensely. The humor of her internal monologues were a highlight, but most especially when they were centered around her interactions with Alistair's dog, Ziggy. I love when an author realistically captures the true and nuanced behaviors of an animal. Brown made Ziggy come alive. I was smitten throughout the entire story and closed the book with a satisfied smile.

This contemporary book is based in the UK about a publicist, Remi and a musician, Alistair. They have a history when they were at university and now they are brought together once again through Remi's work, much to her dismay. This is a slow book and I found it lagged it bit and found the pace only picked up after the halfway point. The story felt like it was dragged out a bit and is missing Alistair's POV, the whole book is written from Remi's side. I didn't initially like Alistair but his character improved as the book progressed and he seemed like a nice guy, Remi was sweet too but had a few hang-ups that were understandable. I didn't really understand the title of the book to the story as it doesn't feel like there's a connection to the story and the book cover doesn't seem to fit either. I felt that the epilogue should have happened a year or two later so that the loose ends with Sarah were tied up better. I rate this book 3.75*.

I really enjoyed this book. This is a spin off from the Castle Calder series, which I loved though you don’t have to read it to read this book. It is a second chance romance. Remi and Alister met in college when Alister was forced to tutor Remi in math. Alister is younger then Remi so when she graduates she heads to New York City to start her career, leaving Alister still in university. Remi’s drive to excel in her career drives a wedge between them and they break up. Fast forward 12 years and they see each other again for the first time when Remi’s company is hired to boost Alister’s publicity. Let’s just say it’s not a happy reunion. I love these characters. They are flawed, human and relatable. They eventually acknowledge their mistake, but can they learn from them and move forward? Great read!

Maid in England is a romantic story that was sweet and a classic. The plot had held my interest. The pace of the story was a slight issue as I was expecting something big but it didn’t happen.

Remi is an American publicist who is hard working and moved to London for her job. Being dedicated and hard working though is also a flaw for her. The book focusing a lot on Remi looking at her career and doing soul-searching before her next birthday.

Alistair is a previous boyfriend that’s nearly made it big in the music industry. He’s not a typical rockstar though and is a quiet and not a man whore and instead is a down to earth guy. I loved both the characters and the chemistry between them is great but their history is going to cause problems.

This book was interesting.. I like it but it could have been more.. Does that even make sense? Who knows?lol
Anyway, i really liked Remi. She was determined and dedicated, maybe a bit to dedicated at times. She has a mission and it involves her ex fiance. There's a past that neither one has healed from. Feelings are still there. Alastair was a good character. He knew what he wanted to do and did. His life got thrown a loop but he keep going. Having Remi in his life has brought up feelings he buried. These two are sweet. They push each other to be better and get better in life. It was great to see them both grow and decide what they really wanted in life. This was a very real book with characters facing everyday life. I enjoyed this book and loved that it wasn't an easy love. These two knew they needed to hash it out in order to move on. The author did an amazing job on this book!
