What could be more fascinating than a tale about narwhals and mermaids? Young readers will enjoy this fantasy taking place undersea at the Trident Academy. Kiki and her friends learn that a young narwhal will be visiting their school, soon. When all of the excited mermaids want to be her buddy, their teacher decides to make it a contest. The first person to crack the code will be the narwhal's buddy. This leads to certain problems with the competive mermaid friends. The author has included lots of information about Narwhals and their environment within the story. This story from the Mermaid Tales series has lots of Polar Science, that could inspire future research on this popular topic. The black and white illustrations are intriguing and beautifully drawn, giving this tale a Disney feel. Students will be competing to get their hands and eyes on this title.

Read this to my daughter since she chose this book. She loves mermaids and narwhals! Although part of a series, we only read this book but it was great because it taught the basics of coding, friendship, teamwork, selflessness and even the greater picture of human issues and the ocean. Teaching kids of these issues introduces real life issues at a young age and can help motivate kids (and parents) for environmentally charged activism.
