The first book in the new paranormal spy series, by #1 bestselling authors, J.R. Rain and Matthew S. Cox!
Mina Barrett is the CIA’s best defense against the Dominion. She’s young, charming, intelligent, motivated… and she’s a vampire.
Twenty years ago, vampires revealed themselves to the world. Society hadn’t expected them to be real at all, much less a species entirely separate from humans. The government feared hostile foreign powers would also seek to exploit their psychic talents, and put out a call for recruitment.
After a childhood spent in isolation, Mina saw a chance for adventure and signed on the dotted line. Unlike the Dominion, she doesn’t feel humans are inferior creatures and works to stop others of her kind from enslaving them.
A deep cover asset discovers information that vampires want to keep out of human hands. The CIA sends Mina in to bring him—and his information—out alive. But the Dominion has their sights set on the secrets buried for centuries beneath a Siberian glacier… secrets that could reshape the world.
J.R. Rain is the author of 110 novels and counting. He lives on an island in the Pacific Northwest, where he's hard at work on his next novel... and fighting off sparkly vampires.
This first book was great. I loved the story. I'm excited to read a new book series by J. R. Rain and Matthew Cox. This writing team writes some good series. I want to read everything.
Great new series about a feisty vampire who works for the CIA, her human colleague/boyfriend and an older sister who is a spy for the bad guys. Great read. Looking forward to the next book.
Action packed. Totally new take on the whole vampire theme. Really out there, but I loved it. Can't wait to see where these two authors take these characters. the imagination used is something else.
I really enjoy the collaborations of Rain and Cox. I have read so many of their co-written and solo books that they are like putting on old slippers. The way they vary their story lines and characters makes me wonder how they outline and interconnect there worlds. Love all The books. I will continue to read all you produce! So when is your next book out?
The vampires in this book are not quite like anyone else's. It's quite interesting, but that means that much of the early part of the book is telling and showing how different they are. We also get introduced to someone I'm betting is our vampire's partner in future books. In fact, it seems best to consider this book a setup for the series to come.
The second part of the book seems to go off on an adventure. This is really just introducing another character who will probably be a recurring character for the series. It also answers a question about vampires in general.
This book kept me interested enough to want to read the next book.
Broken Ice had a very savvy, intelligent female protagonist. From the opening chapters, the storyline is riveting, and t he action non-stop, as Mina moves from assignment to assignment as an undercover operative. Interesting worldbuilding.
I enjoyed this book. It was quick paced, interesting premise, and great characters. What more could you want from an urban fantasy? The action was believable, as were the characters. I liked it. When will the next one come out?
This series must be read in order. This is the first book. I can't wait to read more!!!
When Mina was a grown up Vampire she decided that she did not want to be bored... So she joined the CIA. Being the only Vampire Operative has its drawbacks... Like she is the ONLY Agent able to deal with Vampire threats anywhere in the world. It is not what she expected, but at least she is NEVER bored for long! Who knew that when Vampires came out of the closet all it would really lead to is Vampire focused consumerism and world governments trying to exploit Vampires while simultaneously trying to protect against them? Sadly Mina doesn't get to spend much time at home anymore since she is so in demand in the field so she doesn't have much time for her daughter Chloe but that needs to change... And SOON. Her newest mission has her flying to Germany to do a hand off of sensitive intel and maybe an extraction of the asset has been compromised in any way. This mission almost seems too simple... Like it is designed to make her let her guard down. Something is off. Will she be able to figure it out in time to skew the odds in their favor? No job can be this easy, right? Why is she so fixated on the asset? She has never met him... Or even heard about him before this mission, but something draws her to him... How does that even happen? She CAN'T have developed a CRUSH on her asset right?! That is just too improbable! Here's hoping for th best!
This is a fresh new take on Vampire fiction and it really hooked me! I love the world and the characters so much I truly can't wait to read more of this series! Or even this world!
*This series is suitable for adult readers who enjoy sci-fi fantasy mishmashes with endearing characters and plenty of action, adventures, and mysteries with a dash of romance and a healthy dose of intrigue :)
This is a new (to me at least) series that I jumped on a while ago. There are only two books in the series so far: Broken Ice and Broken Wing. It is written by J.R. Rain and I have enjoyed quite a few book by this author before. Most notably the Vampire for Hire series. So I decided o try out this series as well.
I have to say that I really liked these two books. Perhaps more than I liked the first books in the Vampire for Hire series.
This is not the regular vampire based urban fantasy story in that vampires are not the regular supernatural (magic) creatures that the usual lore describes them to be. Sure they more or less behave like vampires. They drink blood, the have supernatural strength, they are not to found of sunlight etc. etc.
However, their origin is rather different than in the usual lore. I’m obviously not going to give any more details since it is a big part of the story for these first books so… no spoilers.
The main protagonist, Mina Barrett, is of course one of these vampires. She is also the only vampire on the CIA’s payroll. This could of course be both good and bad but, so far, it’s been mostly good. More importantly, I really like her. She is a kick-ass, intelligent, quick tongued government asset with a wicked set of fangs.
In the first book the author of course does a bit of world building setting up the story to come. I liked everything I’ve read so far. I really liked the mystery parts and the ties to science fiction and the extraterrestrial life twists. The author managed to do this very nicely. A lot of authors just dumps sensational revelations on the reader and really misses the opportunity for some nice suspense. This author did not fall into that trap and the blend in of science fiction is nicely done.
Jake, who Mina encounters and befriends along the way is also a very likable character.
The fact that current day’s useless and spineless senators (goes for politicians more or less everywhere) gets a bit of flack doesn’t exactly lower my appreciation of the books of course.
Overall these books was a very good read for me and now I am looking forward to the third installment in the series.
Fascinating premise for a story. Too bad there’s only two books. Warning, aliens are involved.
Mina Barrett is a CIA spy who just happens to be a born vampire. Falling out of a plane at 2000 feet is just a nuisance to her. Born in 1893, she still looks barely out college, but she has a 35-year-old (10 in vamp terms) daughter. Currently, she is the only vampire in the CIA, which takes full advantage of her abilities. Meaning anything involving the Dominion, a secret organization of vampires who want to control the world, falls into her lap. Oh, and there’s night-walkers who really are undead.
Mina has to meet, then rescue, another agent Jake Bishop and then end up more than casual acquaintances.
Fave scenes: letting the attacker go free, telling the cops about the Audi, rescuing the family and the HALO jump.
I really enjoyed the story, the take on vampires and how the author guided me through it all. It's written in first person language, and in present tense, and that combination made it a bit wobbly to get through, it was only in the last few chapters that I felt like the author really had gotten into the flow of it. It wasn't _bad_ in any way, it just wasn't great.
I started reading it in May, and totally forgot about the book until a few days ago because I saw it in my reading list on good reads. After a chapter or so I was in the game again, but I can totally see why I put it down and didn't pick it up until now - as said, the writing just didn't flow, even though the story and set up was good.
I was a little worried about starting this book. Combining the two genres of vampires and spies is a daring undertaking and could’ve turned out to be very hokey. But having read these two authors before, I had enough faith to give it a try. I definitely wasn’t disappointed. Broken Ice pulls it off very well. This book offers a slightly different take on the vampire legend, while not getting too far away from why we love vampire stories to begin with. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in the series.
Great new character and good setting for the story. great characters and settings for the story. Look forward to seeing where they go next and the relationship between the two lead characters. Tv

How does anyone get through any of these books without laughter and wonder regarding this new hero, another kickass vampire who seems to know her stuff. As a CIA agent Mina does seem to handle herself well enough and I look forward to the next installment of kickass CIA agent.

The idea of vampires coming out and blending in with humans isn't new. The idea of them blending so well they join the CIA??? Ok, that's very new and pretty interesting. I will be looking for the next book in this series.
I thoroughly enjoyed how the authors combined fantasy, science fiction, and mystery in the story. I have a thing for smart, kickass, female protagonists. I'm looking forward to more in the series.
But these two authors make it work and have created a unique take on the whole genre. And their characters are always spot on. The backstory is great as well. Delightful and entertaining.
First of a new series of books by these talented author's.. Looking forward to working my way through the rest & learning more about Mine & her many mission's😍
I liked this one. Turns out I read it twice - I think once right when it came out in 2019. I didn't realize the second came out and saw it in August 2022. I suppose I didn't recall reading it the first time so read it again - I did remember it as I started it but finished it anyway to be caught up to read the next. I enjoyed Mina and I like the supporting characters and the secret of what lies buried in the glacier. I have lost track of how many J.R Rain and Matthew Cox books I've read and I really have enjoyed all of them. I went on and read the second (maybe last) of this series and enjoyed that one as well.
So easy to read, with a story line that just keeps going and characters so real the hop out of the book. I've found a new series to follow. Hopefully they will write fast!
