"National Geographic Little Kids First Big Book of Animals" is an informative introduction to the animal kingdom aimed at young readers. This book is filled with vibrant photography and captivating illustrations that are sure to engage children's imaginations.
What I found particularly appealing is how the author incorporates fun facts about various animals, making it both educational and entertaining. The layout is user-friendly, with clear headings and colorful pages that draw you in.
This book is a fantastic resource for fostering a love of nature and animals in children.
"Little kids" is a misnomer for those of us who think that 2-3 year olds are "little kids" and kids big enough to read this will not like to be called little kids. None the less, this is a great title--sturdy binding, big color photos and lots of interesting information about animals kids love written in large text in a simple style. Great for browsing.
July 2017 - totally fascinating for both of us. It's divided up by habitat type (forest, ocean, desert, etc.) with two spreads per animal. There's a quick fact box for each, then a narrative that takes each animal from birth into maturity. The focus on baby animals/family groups is perfect for a preschool/early elementary audience, and there's always a suggested question or two for the child reading that relates something about the animal to their own life. We read it in chunks over a few nights, and Ben was always eager to get back to it. This would be a nice one to own and dip into over and over, and I've already put some others in the series on hold.
A great book to start your child's library. I completely ignored the recommended age which is 4-8 years and started reading this with my daughter since she was 18 months. The pictures are the best part of this book which means you can enjoy this book just by pointing at the pictures and naming all the animals and their activities. She learned so much and I learned some trivia along the way. After she learned all the pictures, I started to read some of the facts while rereading this book. And later, she can read the book herself and enjoy it yet again.
I definitely got my money's worth with this book and I believe you will too.
This series by National Geographic is a favorite in our house. The gorgeous pictures and child-friendly text make this series a great educational resource for curious kids. This book is divided to different sections representing biome diversity: grassland, ocean, desert, forest, and polar. It describes a few animals in each section. For each animal, it dedicated 2-4 pages, provides a short description of their main characteristics, usually an interesting and surprising one, and includes beautiful pictures in each page.
I highly recommend this series by National Geographic for children who show curiosity about nature.
5 Stars Genre: Informational A unique feature about this book, besides the wide variety of animals that it was able to give information on, is the amazing pictures. Every picture in the entire book is so real. They really capture your attention when even if you were simply flipping through.
Genre: Informational/Non-fiction Grade Level(s): PK-2nd Grade Unique Feature: This book give all kinds of facts about different animals from all over the world, while also showing real life pictures. The intreating facts that go along with each different animal make real life connections that children would understand.
As with the others in this series, this is a fun book full of great information geared towards a younger audience. None of it is overwhelming, but neither is it missing anything important for a good overview of wildlife - from ocean to land. If you have a kid with a science inclination or a love of all animals big and small, this is a great book to get them.
Great informational text for young kids. Pages give simple easy to read facts and images of different animals. The animals are divided into five major regions of where they would most likely live (grassland, ocean, desert, forest, polar). Pages ask questions to the reader that make the information educational and/or relatable.
Adorable animal reference book! Contains fluffy and scaly creatures big and small, appealing to young explorers to the world of wildlife. To include dolphins, tigers, butterflies, frogs, penguins, wolves, and pandas. Child-friendly text explains how animal parents take care of their young, how baby animals change as they grow, and how they learn to hunt and eat.
Sorry for bombarding you with all the kids books but since I'm reading them to my son, it has occurred to me that many other parents probably are too.
This National Geographic series is for younger children, and I highly recommend them as starter books for their beautiful pictures and engaging information. At age 6 though, my son has outgrown them.
This was such a good and informative book! It showed a lot of animals and told a lot of information that I didn't even know before. This would be a good book to incorporate in your classroom to learn about the animals.
Beautiful pictures and plenty of information for kids that is easier to understand than some more in depth books. The index has maps and additional detailed information as well. A solid book to add to a home library.
Great! I loved the size, variety and quality of the illustrations, fun facts included and interactive questions (although baby is too small for the questions yet). Definitely need to revisit this later.
Fascinating for little kids and big kids (aka grownups). Love the large format, bounty of photos, fun questions and activities. Can't wait to share with the 5 year old grandboy who has discovered the joy of nonfiction. Will need to get him the rest of the series.
Title: National Geographic Little Kids First Big Book of Animals Author: Catherine D. Hughes Illustrator: Genre: Photographic Essay Theme(s): Animals, Photography, Wildlife, Scenery Opening line/sentence: “Grasses are the main plants that grow in grasslands: There are not many trees here.” Brief Book Summary: This book takes a glance at many different animal species found in the wild. Divided by their biomes, the book lists and gives facts about the animals and the places where they are found in the wild. The different animals found in this book are divided into grassland, ocean, desert, forest, and polar regions. Professional Recommendation/Review #1: Children's Literature - Denise Lockett: This splashy, colorful book presents animals according to their biomes. Divided by "where they live," the text is organized by grassland, ocean, desert, forest, and polar regions. It offers extensive, age-appropriate activities and questions throughout that are meant to assist parents (or teachers) in exploring the points of the text. The book is durable and of a size friendly to young hands, with large, colorful photos of animals that are instantly appealing: tigers, giraffes, octopi, and penguins are some examples. Unsurprisingly, the book is mammal-focused and it often presents the animals in an anthropomorphic light, using terms such as "Mommy," "jobs," and "babysitters." However, this is forgivable given the very young audience for the book. The text follows a consistent pattern of offering basic facts—"kind," "home," "size," "food," "sounds," and "babies"—regarding each animal. Colorful text boxes and insets around the photos add interesting tid-bits. Not clearly noted but arising anyway, is the issue of predators. That is because the text discusses stripes and camouflage, and the playfulness of both tiger and lion cubs, but delicately refrains from mentioning the reasons for the playful pouncing and the stripes. Other omissions are frustrating as well: the Animal Map meant to illustrate where the featured animals live is simply a picture of the globe on which the continents are color-coded. For example, Africa has both the cheetah ("grassland") and the desert jerboa ("desert") featured in the book, but the map does not distinguish between the two animals' territories, nor does it label where the biomes are on any of the continents. The glossary and index are thorough and yet age-appropriate. The "Parent Tips" section is replete with proposed activities, some of which are useful and some of which are very attenuated from the biological and ecological lessons of the primary text. Reviewer: Denise Lockett Professional Recommendation/Review #2: CBC Reviewer (National Science Teachers Association (NSTA)): Young children can begin exploring life science with this delightful book, which features common animals from around the world. Stunning photography, quick facts, and attentiong-grabbing trivia will keep youngsters entertained while they learn. (Big kids will like it too!) The book's accuracy and attractive format make it an ideal gift or focus of a center in a classroom. It was named an NSTA/CBC Outstanding Science Trade Book for 2011. There are "Parent Tips to Extend Learning," which will also be appreciated by teachers; an animal map to encourage integration in the elementary classroom; a glossary; and an index. Grades K-5. 2010, National Geographic Society, 128p, $14.95. Ages 5 to 11. (PUBLISHER: National Geographic (Washington D.C.:), PUBLISHED: 2010.) Response to Two Professional Reviews: I see a mixture of reviews from these two professional reviews. They both say that this book is very good when it comes to age appropriateness because of it’s vivid colors and size of words. The first review, however, mentions the fact that a lot of information is omitted from the text that should be included, including why animals have camouflage (so they can hide from predators). Overall, however, for the age range given for this book, 4-8 years, it would be a very appropriate book to have in the classroom or at home. Evaluation of Literary Elements: The large words on each page would make it very easy for a child to read once they have all the skills needed. It is also a very visually appealing book, with many colors, both for the text and for text boxes that pop out of the page. The real photos used can also give children a good representation of what these animals actually look like, not just cute and cuddly cartoon animals, although many animals are cute and cuddly in real life! Consideration of Instructional Application: This would be a great book to keep in an early elementary classroom to give children many examples of animals found in the wildlife. If we were to do a project where children were to select one animal from the book to do further research on, they would be able to have a few facts to get them started with. This book would be a great reference to keep in any elementary aged classroom for instruction on any type of animal found in the book.
The photos of the baby animals are so cute that they are the highlight of the book. They show the fact of life - growth. Cultivating a growth mindset starts here...
