Rate this book
Lucius is a regular underdog; a depressive man, lacking perspective, who suffers from severe insomnia.
His virtues? He can draw really well.
He can also invade dreams.

“The Dream Maker” is a thrilling new sci-fi novel that tells the story of Lucius; a young man who is in a low point in his life, trying to find a meaning to his daily routine.

After three nights without sleeping, Lucius’s body collapses when doing a presentation at his work. He seeks treatment and checks himself into a clinic, where the doctors experiment on people by putting them to sleep in high-tech beds that capture images from dreams and project them into monitors, so they can be watched live.

Soon, Lucius discovers that when he is in a session at the same time as other volunteers, he can invade their dreams.

Encouraged by Carl, the director of the laboratory, Lucius accepts the mission of breaking into people’s minds and then tries to help them by battling their issues.

On his quest, he meets Lyla. A mysterious young woman, whose story reveals itself slowly but powerfully, and who inspires Lucius into improving his new abilities.

He enters an astonishing universe filled with horror, adventure, drama, and puzzling situations, that never fails to amaze but also leaves him standing over the line between reality and imagination.

Struggling with his condition, whether Lucius is going to succeed nobody knows. However, what they are sure of is that Lucius is going to unveil the secrets of everyone around him; and perhaps, some of his own.

Igor Bedê’s The Dream Maker pairs the therapeutic potential of dream analysis therapy with futuristic technologies. Each character exhibits unique, yet relatable, problems and perspectives that reveal the delicate nature of the human condition.

The protagonist’s, Lucius', struggle with insomnia and curious blackouts veils an underlying uncertainty between reality and the dream world. As Lucius agrees to take part in the sleep institute’s experiments, he confronts his own lack of self-esteem and trauma through assisting other patients within their own dreams. From David, a child who struggles to accept his new life as an amputee, to Robert, an elderly man who loses his mind to dementia, Bedê illustrates the human psyche from a variety of angles: depression, guilt, trauma, loneliness, and repression.

The eerie and often grotesque dreamscapes illuminate the anxieties of the human mind and, although overdramatic at times, evokes an arching sense of uneasiness and unpredictability. Although The Dream Maker provides an engaging and entertaining read, arguably, it simplifies the complex nature of mental issues for the sake of spectacle. Despite this, the vivid and energetic scenes would translate well to the big screen.

While there's an ambitious concept at the heart of this story, I feel something was lost in transition from author to page. It was missing some vital piece that would have made it whole. The best scenes are when the staff members butt heads over treatment of the patients. The tension reaches a dramatic crescendo every time this happens. If only the author could have sustained that. I also appreciated the giant ragdoll in the dream at the end. Very creepy. I was hoping for this one to pack much more of a wallop then it did. However, I would absolutely read an Igor Bede work again and hope to get the chance.

Really an amazing book on subjects that I love: dreams, lucid dreaming, psychology and science fiction in general. A great story-telling that puts us in the mind and dreams of Lucius, making us look forward to every next step and chapter on this deep psychological, hero-like, noir romance called "The Dream Maker". I strongly suggest you to try it.
