Paul Morand

He was a graduate of the Paris Institute of Political Studies (better known as Sciences Po). During the pre-war period, he wrote many short books which are noted for their elegance of style, erudition, narrative concision, and for the author's observation of the countries he visited combined with his middle-class views.
Morand's reputation has been marred by his stance during the Second World War, when he collaborated with the Vichy regime and was a vocal anti-Semite. When the Second World War ended, Morand served as an ambassador in Bern, but his position was revoked and he lived in exile in Switzerland.
Post-war, he was a patron of the Hussards literary movement, which opposed Existentialism. Morand went on to become a member of the Académie française; his candidature was initially rejected by Charles de Gaulle, the only instance of a President ever exercising his right to veto electees to the academy. Morand was finally elected ten years later, though he still had to forgo the official investiture).

Intéressant à lire, à la fois touristique, historique mais suranné.
C'est très érudit évidemment, mais pourtant on a une sensation d'exercice d'écriture ou de chronique.
A l'instar de Fouquet, j'ai eu la même impression de ne pas me sentir à la hauteur, de manquer de culture pour véritablement apprécier, de laisser échapper de subtiles nuances.
La préface de Philippe Sollers est indigeste.

Me ha llevado a conocer los suelos de Nueva York, me ha dejado intrigado por caminarlos aunque al leerlo, lo he caminado. Necesito oler la ciudad y explorarla algún día. Un andar sin prisas.

Le New York de 1929 n'existe plus mais l'esprit de New York est toujours présent. Morand décrit la ville qu'il a connu lors de multiples séjours entre 1925 et 1929. New York avant le crash. New York des speekeasies et des clubs de Harlem. New York en plein développement, en pleine construction de nouveaux gratte-ciel, en mutation constante.
Dans une prose admirable, seul ce grand écrivain peut ainsi décrire cette ville et nous donner l'envie, 85 ans plus tard d'aller se promener sans tarder le long de Broadway et de la cinquième avenue.
