The Reapers are by definition a race of Guardians. A gift from the Creator to the Human race with a preternaturally strong human body and an eternal soul. They come from all walks of life and from every time period in history, existing only to keep the balance between the living and the dead. To stand as bastion between the humans and the world of the supernatural.
Sometimes the monsters are real and sometimes, they’re right in front of you.
Follow the Reapers as they stumble their way around rules that have been set long before they were created. Lives hang in the balance as they fight to keep the scales of Death in check.
This book contains all four short stories/novellas in the Reaper Society series to date. Included are four never before seen bonus short stories and a preview of the next book in the series.
Francesca is a 30 year old book nerd, hobby photographer, and lover of all things random and weird. She has 3 children, two cats, 3 dogs, and lives in Southern WV with the whole lot and her husband of 14 years.
The Reaper Society Omnibus, Vol. 1, by Francesca Vance. This book is a roller-coaster ride through Reaper Society. For those of you who have read the blurb introducing the book I don't need to tell you that the Reapers are a race of supernatural Guardians, a gift to the human race from the female Creator to protect and safeguard humans in this life and the next. Their role is to preserve the balance between life and death, and they are neutral entities charged with keeping that balance.
This volume contains four novellas, and some bonus short stories that have never before been in print. I won't attempt to describe the stories--that would spoil it for new readers--but the interaction between Reapers Ash, Cole, and the newly created Jessica (who is bonded to Cole because of his concern for her in a previous life) is truly marvelous. Jessica, in particular, has a major role in this volume as she truly learns what it means to be a Reaper, and a balancer of life and death.
Vance's novellas and stories never fail to move me. She always manages to make Reaper society seem real and meaningful, and never allows her characters to forget their role as "balances". She has a unique understanding of death, and the characters--both human and supernatural who populate her stories--are varied and unusual. They range from shape shifters, fae, elves, vampires, and demons, but the worst monsters of her imagination are always human. Nothing she can conjure of supernatural beings can act as cruelly or as horribly as the human monsters she creates for her Reapers to control.
Vance almost makes me a believer in her supernatural spirit world, and when I suspend my disbelief I can become part of her remarkable imagination with effortless ease. Like the Reapers, I can begin to read her mind as she creates her imaginary world. A wonderful, and often very thought-provoking read.
I think i may have fallen a little in love with this. I started reading it and before i knew it i was trying to turn the page ... there were no more pages. I got lost in the stories. Thank you. Very much. That doesn't happen often.
I want to start off by saying that I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest opinion, good or bad. FYI, LOVED it and this different world she created.
This book of novellas introduces you to the Reapers and their world. The Reapers are Guardians, a gift to humanity from the Creator, their job is to keep the balance between life and death, to help the souls move from this world and in to the next.
In this book we’re introduced to Ash, Cole (be still my heart) and Jessica. Three completely different Reapers, but all three have one thing in common, they keep the balance. From the first sentence to the last, Ms. Vance grabs you and doesn’t let go. She has you wanting more and more. It’s like these characters are real and you’ve known them for years. Drawing you into her world, she has you believing this is how it is when a loved one dies. There’s a Cole or a Jessica or creator help us, an Ash, helping a loved one move on to the next world. Ms Vance has a way of building a world that draws you in and doesn’t let go. It makes me wish there was a bar called The Crypt and I could sneak in there and be a part of that world...for a little while. In case I was too subtle, Cole is my favorite.
As the blurb states Reapers not only help the souls of the dead move on but they also stand as guardians between the human and paranormal worlds! Cole is the central character in this collection! The world building is detailed and seamless! The characters are well developed and lifelike! Cole's bar The Crypt is the Paranormal equivalent of Switzerland and a neutral place for every one to meet do business and socialize! Ash is Cole's mentor, friend, and possibly his biggest problem child! There is plenty of action adventure and mystery mixed with a healthy dose of humor! I volunteered to read an advanced reader copy of this book!
ormat: Kindle Edition Francesca Vance continues to amaze me. The five stories that come together in this wonderful collection introduce us to a fantastic, magical, brilliant, vivid world with reapers, shifters, witches, elves, far and other magical beings. We follow the journey of three resorts, Ash, Cole, and Jeasica. I have to admit Cole is my favorite. These three must battle while keeping the balance of the scales aligned. Vance not only gives us the basis for a new wor!d, but her characters are so well developed and thought out with each action and reaction. I'm just amazed!!!
This was a fantastic collection of Novellas and short stories. Although short, the stories were well-written and full of both action and emotion. At times heartbreaking, it was an intriguing look into reapers. I look forward to finding out what happens next in this series.
I was so happy when I found out the four Reaper novellas, with bonus scenes would be together in one bundle. I am a huge fan of this author and her writing and I can’t wait for the next book to come out, especially after the little teasers we’ve gotten.
Love Vance's Reapers, love her world, love her characters = Love Vance's books. Now I'm waiting for Asylum (Francesca's POV on Shifters, and it will be RH too!!!)
~I’ve just finished reading Reapers Society Omnibus This is my first time venturing into this type of book....thank you! Thank you for including me to read and review it. As this being a different book for me, it brought some closure for me... I’ve lost my brother and sister ( both in their early 60’s and both to their addiction) in the last year and a half....within 10 months of each other. Being the youngest and last of my family...my first thoughts as they were passing on was, what was going on in their mind? What did they see? What did they feel? Were they sorry they were leaving this world? And I’m hoping that Reapers like Jessica and Cole ( who remind me of a brother/sister relationship) may have lifted their souls from torment and layed them to peace. I truly believe they were tired of struggling day to day with their addiction and needed rest. Although I know this is fiction somehow let’s me believe they went peacefully. I’m a true believer that our story is written the day we were conceived.
A great collection of the four Reaper Society novellas and short stories, along with some bonus scenes and an introduction to the next book in the series.
I'm in love with the Reapers; I find the whole idea of them intriguing and somewhat comforting too. I particularly like the way that they are the 'referees' between different races of Supernatural beings and keep the peace between them all.
This omnibus is a great way to catch up on the authors works to date and prepare yourself for the next book on its way. Highly recommended.
