Rate this book

Mamma mia! That's the good stuff.

My first reaction seeing Fitzgerald was:
Ewwww . . .
Why's Fitzie back already? UGGHHHHHH!

But "It's the power of money, you peasant" made me crack up and furious at the same time :'D

This 11th volume is doing great! I like short story about the mysterious death of Kyōka Izumi's parents, I like how Fitzgerald shows up and be active again after his massive defeat. And new threat shows up in the from of Fyodor Dostoyevsky! Even the hint of a teenagers' love triangle is bearable too! (This time I actually like the love triangle and how the three parties interacting together! XD) After a few 'so-and-so' volumes, this volume is a welcoming change!

PS: I really can't help bursting some bubbles here! That's how the real Kyōka Izumi looks like, and he was definitely not a cute kimono-wearing girl on the book's cover! XD https://www.goodreads.com/author/show...

*This review is for Bungo Stray Dogs as a whole, not just this volume. I will add the same review under every volume.*

BSD is good, but not great. I like the character designs and the art is amazing. But it's way too overhyped in my opinion. There are some things I didn't like or found pretty dumb.

1. Everyone is a genius syndrome: 10 characters or even more have an insanely high IQ. if everyone is a chess god playing mind games, then nobody actually is. At some point it stops being 'clever' and starts being exhausting. Like let someone actually miscalculate ONCE without it being part of some bigger plan. BSD intelligence is stylized, exaggerated, plot driven, "genius aura", and characters know things because the story says so. So when someone says "Dazai has an IQ of 200" That number means basically nothing. Just "Please believe he is very smart." Same with Ranpo. An IQ of 200+ is not even useful in real world context. Authors use it like a power level. I prefer characters with realistic intelligence. Because they could exist, you could meet them, and you wouldn’t realize what they're doing until it’s too late. That’s way scarier than an IQ stat pulled from someone’s ass. Actually, where do BSD IQ numbers even COME from?? Asagiri did not run these characters through a Wechsler test. There is no in universe scene where Dazai sits down with a psychologist, Mori hands out scantrons, or Ranpo speedruns Mensa. IQ in BSD functions like "This character is very smart, please clap." Dazai's IQ is 200, Fyodor's is 200 (people argue about Dazai's and Fyodor's IQ, but I really don't care if it's 200 or 215), Ranpo's is 215, Mori's is 175+, Ango's is 170+, a lot of people say Chuuya's is also secretly 150+. So what does "smart" even mean anymore? It becomes a badge, a hierarchy, a fandom flex instead of a special skill/trait and something demonstrated. If everyone is a genius, no one is. There’s no contrast.

2. plot armor thicker than concrete: some characters should’ve been dead five arcs ago. I don't actually mind the plot armor that much, but sometimes it's a bit ridiculous. It gets a bit annoying when every loss is secretly a win in disguise.

3. Fake ugliness: This is the one that bothers me the most. BSD talks about the dark, ugly sides of humanity but then makes them hot, tragic, romantic, and conveniently justified. That’s not ugliness that’s aestheticized suffering. BSD wants to say "Look how ugly and broken humans are." But everyone is hot, everyone is exceptional, everyone has poetic trauma. So the ugliness is symbolic, sanitized, controlled. It’s shown from a distance. The characters are extremely competent, hyper talented, admired by the narrative, rarely truly powerless. They’re bad at living in a romantic way.

4. The female characters are badly written: not necessarily offensively bad but thin. They’re underdeveloped compared to the men, their trauma is glossed over, they rarely drive the plot in a way that isn’t immediately overshadowed, and when they are competent the narrative doesn’t linger on their inner world the same way it does with the guys. Meanwhile the male cast gets internal monologues, philosophy dumps, elaborate mind games and mythologized suffering.

5. The tragic backstory inflation: people don't like when someone complains about this, and I think all the backstories are interesting, but practically every character has the most insane past ever. Everybody’s parents are dead, abused, betrayed, experimented on, orphaned, shot, drowned, and emotionally obliterated. What bothers me is that for a lot of characters (especially female ones) we get a tragic past, one flashback, maybe one emotional speech, and then it’s never meaningfully addressed again. No long-term consequences, no behavioral patterns that actually complicate the plot, no messy coping, regression, or contradictions. It’s always maximum suffering, minimum specificity. Abuse. Experiments. Dead family. Betrayal. Rinse, repeat. Nuanced backstories would be things like loving parents who still fucked you up unintentionally, doing something morally wrong by choice and having to live with it, being privileged but empty, being loyal to the wrong people for too long, slow corruption instead of "one horrific event", failure without a villain to blame. BSD almost never does that. It prefers "Something horrible happened TO me" instead of "I made a decision that shaped who I became." And that’s why it all feels glamorized. If the character is a victim of extreme circumstances, the narrative can always go "see? not their fault." Nobody has to sit in the discomfort of agency. That’s also why characters like Dazai get sanitized by the fandom. If his past is framed as 'he was broken and saved" then people can pretend he was secretly good all along when the whole point should’ve been that he’s functional, charming, and still morally fcked. BSD could have been so much stronger if it trusted quieter uglier human flaws instead of trauma shock value. Less "experimented on as a child" and more "I chose wrong and kept choosing wrong."

6. The characters are not relatable: You always see many people being like "I kin Dazai" but in my opinion, they are not relatable at all. BSD characters don’t feel like people, they feel like concepts wearing drip. The constant galaxy brain IQ, hyper optimized trauma, perfectly timed suffering, flawless execution of plans…creates distance. You’re not watching someone LIVE, you’re watching someone perform a role the author assigned them. Real people misread situations, act out of insecurity, get lucky instead of smart, regret things that weren’t "necessary", fail in boring embarrassing ways. BSD characters almost never do that. Even their breakdowns are aesthetic. Even their mistakes are "actually part of the plan." That kills relatability HARD. You can always relate in theory. But it’s surface level "I relate to their trauma" or "I relate to feeling lost" and not "I recognize this person’s thought process" or "I’ve made that exact dumb choice" That’s why they feel unreal. It also ties back to the IQ thing. When everyone’s a genius the story stops being about human limitations. You can’t project yourself into someone who’s always five steps ahead, because most of us are just trying to survive step one without tripping over our own shoelaces. BSD wants you to admire its characters.
It rarely lets you recognize yourself in them.

7. Sometimes the story also can be straight up boring. Not all the time, but enough that you start checking how many chapters are left like "okay… are we done cooking or what?" To me, early arcs were meh, middle arcs slapped, later arcs felt like Asagiri just kept stacking twists because of escalation addiction.

BSD’s biggest crime is that it pretends to be deeper than it is. It wants to be profound, literary, morally complex, but it rarely commits to letting characters genuinely fail, rot or face consequences. It’s not bad. It’s just overhyped. Dazai especially feels more like a concept and less like a person. Everything in BSD is so glamourized. It refuses to make anything actually genuinely uncomfortable. Nobody is allowed to be truly pathetic, cruel, or wrong without the story going "actually, this was all justified." Like. Let someone be ugly and stay ugly. Also the overhyping of characters is wild. The fandom treats them like they’re the most complex beings ever written when half their personality is: smart, sad, hot, morally ambiguous (but not really). Everyone likes something different, of course, but instead of epic despair, operatic suffering, genius masterminds above consequence, I prefer just people being messy. So yeah. BSD isn’t trash. But it’s not the literary holy text people act like it is. It’s a stylish, sometimes fun, sometimes frustrating series that thinks it’s deeper than it actually commits to being. It's interesting, dramatic, fun at times. But relatable? Grounded? Human? Nah.

Important: If anyone ever reads this, don't take this review too seriously. I was just bored and decided to write a long review. Nothing against BSD or people who enjoy it. I actually used to be a huge BSD fan from like 2020 to 2024. And I glazed it a LOT, so I know how much people in the fandom exaggerate. I would give it 2 or 3 stars for how enjoyable it had been for me. The time in the fandom had been fun, but the story and characters itself are not something I like that much.

Lots of set up this time but still captivating. This series has been constantly good this entire time, even when it's just filler and set up for the next arc and it's just sooo good???

We see a lot of Fitzgerald getting back on his feet which personally I could do without because I got tired of him quickly. He is really good at being evil and rich though! Alcott is so cute but I wish she had more personality beyond she lives to serve that man.😭

Ooooh the new bad guy, Fyodor Dostoevsky??? I'm both appalled and impressed at his methods. The agency and the port mafia had been getting along too well recently and he really came in and said nah y'all gonna be killing each other again.💀

Absolutely going to be getting intense after what happened in here, oh man.

covers s2 ep 7-8

chapter 43
one of my fav chapters. get behind me lucy they could never make me hate you. i loved getting to see kyouka's parents bc they were so hardcore?? like immediately her dad was like "kill me" and her mom did so without hesitation?? that's the romance we need these days. wish we got more lucy/kyouka bestie moments. but the reveal that kouyou was the one who got the info for kyouka?? i'm truly living but also is every port mafia member totally enthralled by the enemy like grow a spine. at least i still have kajii. (for ex: chuuys emotional when dazai's name is mentioned; mori and fukuzawa toxic yaoi; hirotsu obviously still respecting dazai; akutawaga also obsessed w/dazai and now atsushi; tachihara spoiler stuff; kouyou wanting to protect kyouka; gin who'd follow her brother to the "light" like ugh. give me kajii any day who'd blow anyone up for the "grand master of the universe" which i'd love to know why he calls mori that lmao)

chapter 44
omg francis how the turn tables. his wife's wedding ring??? that's so tragic asigiri when i catch you.... not even joking that could be one of my fav not really important minor details in this entire story. UMMM why did bones not include john steinbeck in the show??? jaw dropped.

chapter 45
best friendship is francis and the rando. oh louisa girl you're so precious. i love that poe is included here but what is strange is like the guild basically fell apart right. wdym poe is gonna do whatever luisa asks him how did she find him. and also is no guild member angry af that poe gave the ADA the info about moby dick?? i'm not mad about it; i think it's funny to think about and it gives us more ranpoe content. also calling luisa and poe "comrades in shyness" i love that i wish it were in the show. hilarious that francis will do something diabolical and then pepper in the fact he loves a good sale. also engaging in outside insider trading with stocks louisa is a genius.

chapter 46
idk maybe it does irk me that dazai has the best ability the biggest brain is angsty and inscrutable yet also goofy and #relatable and somehow knows everything about everything. i want to see more of mori's powers i want to see elise go batshit crazy. fyodor stabbing mori is the best scene ever and not bc i hate either of them it's bc i love both of them sm. that's so cool. also fyodor knocking of his lobotomies one by one ig. there's a studio c video on youtube called "sherlock meets his match" in which it's just 3+ minutes of sherlock and moriarty going back and forth like "ik you'd do this so i did that" "well i knew you'd do that so i did this" and etc etc. that's what i feel dazai and fyodor are like. in any case, interestingly enough, fyodor's goal atm seems to be to wipe out all ability users bc he considers them a sin. that is quite literally eli ever from Vicious hmmmm i wonder if schwab has watched or read this or if asagiri has read schwab since both ideas kinda came out at the same time. does fyodor consider himself a sin like eli does or is he the exception? very interesting to think about. and finally that one panel with chuuya's gloved hands omg.... he moves me so much ack.

Grazie all'aiuto e all'insistenza della povera Alcott, Fitzgerald riesce a rimettersi in pista.

A nice volume with good character moments and a forward going plot.

I love Kyōka, she is very cute and it's nice to see her being able to appriciate her ability more as a gift from her parents.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Fitzgerald and Alcott, their dynamic is super funny and satifying, and it's nice to see Fitzgerald sceming and also just learning normal life things.

The Dazai and Dostoevsky moment was genuenly a good philisophical conversation starter, and I look forward to seeing more from them.

Mori is funny. I like him.

WE GOT TO SEE SOME OF MY BABY BOY POOKIE WOOKIE SOOKIE COOKIE LOOKIE AKUTAGAWA I LOVE HIM I AM IN MOVE WITH HIM LET ME AT HIM I NEED HIM PLEASE HE IS AMAZING WE ALL LOVE HIM I SWEAR WE ARE ALL CRACKING AKUTAGAWA SO HARD I SWEAR TO ACTUAL GOD AND JESUS AND THE HOLY SPIRIT WE ARE ALL CRACKING THAT TWINKY ASS BITCH

Chapters 43~45 : The Guild Aftermath Arc [End]
Look who we've got here : T. J. Eckleburg (from The Great Gatsby) with his Eyes of God. Nice ! And Fitzgerald hunting for discounts.. I never knew I needed this.

Chapters 46 : Cannibalism Arc
I wonder if he's doing it on purpose, but why is it that every last chapter of every volume is competely on an other level !! Solid 5 stars !! Dostoevsky has made a move throwing both the ADA and the PM into a blood feud.

Montgomery is back and working at the café below the Agency. She, Atsushi, and Kyouka have a little adventure, and it's got me shipping her and Atsushi. I know it doesn't happen pretty much at all, but I'm crossing my fingers for something in the verrrry future. Though my BL brain is all for Atsushi and Akutagawa 😊

Anyway, another great volume. Kyouka's backstory and relationship with Demon Snow are revealed. Fitzgerald is back with Alcott, the strategist. And there is an assassin after the leader of both the Port Mafia and Detective Agency.

Gatsby in Japan, what will he do?? Buy pans? Befriend poor bald men?? Ruin the reputation of a multi-million dollar worth company's CEO??? No one knows.
... Wait, it isn't Gatsby?

I like this volume for how ludicrous it is. I have no idea what's going on, and I love it. Yes Fyodor, cosplay as a cop. You look so cool when you do that. stab the weird man in front of his weird "daughter". Everyone loves you. Seriously, what the hell is going on in this volume?? It's so funny.

Kyouka's backstory is so sad and messed up. The way her parents were killed and Kyouka grew up thinking her mother's skill killed them. But in reality, that skill got passed down to her thanks to her mother, and it practically "saved" her in a sense.

I don't think the scene with John eavesdropping on Fitzgerald and Alcott was included in the anime (or it was and I forgot) but now I'm intrigued. Oh, and that small snippet of Ranpo and Poe at the end was hilarious.

This was a bit of a mixed bag for me. The volume finished the Guiild Aftermath Arc (which also concludes the Ability Wars Saga) with the last chapter starting the Cannibalism Arc within the Decay of Angels Saga. The first chapter was really good, giving some backstory to Kyouka. The next few chapters involved Fitzgerald and there were too many unrealistic scenes for me to fully enjoy (like, how did he get the money for an expensive suit?). The volume ends on a solid start to the next arc

Well, I wasn't a great fan of the majority of this volume...Francis was cool okay ....
It could have been 3 stars maybah but the final chapter.. oh boy things went down hard! The godlike Dostoyevski is here, but don't touch precious Mori-san and Fukuzawa, don't you dare .... if anything happens to them I riot.
