A JRP. Mystery Adventure Thriller (RMMB - 2)/Murder Most Foul

JRP. has. penned the second novel in the Dog Martin series which is about the murder of a young high school girl. The girl is shot in the heart and found in the yard of a star football player. The blame immediately is directed at the young man and certain members of one of the families. The Sheriff, after investigating the scene and gathering evidence determines that the football player is innocent. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS

The author writes great westerns about the old west, he also writes amazing stories of the new west. The tale the author brings to readers involves murder, mystery and great characters. The story opens with a murder and then keeps readers on the edge of their seat trying to find the truth. The author uses real life and how people think of others who they don't feel are up to their standards, especially when it comes to an unsolved murder. If you haven't picked up book one in this series, you should, although both books are stand alone and great reads.

A great second book in the Roy Martin series. The author has developed the nuance and time-period and aptly portrays a 1950's flavor. I really liked it equally to the first book. Although this book was about an entirely new case, it still expanded on some of the characters in the first book and explained a lot more about why they'd do the things they did. I would recommend this book to those who like a southern crime mystery series.

“Shooting the Bull” is John Rose Putnam’s second excursion for Sheriff Roy Martin, a superbly crafted character, as he investigates the murder of a young girl. Several of the characters that accompanied Martin in the excellent debut novel in this series, ‘The Misplaced Mob’, are back, and author Putnam complements them with a magnificent selection of additional individuals, each a standout in their own right. If it’s one thing that the author has obviously put a lot of work into, it’s the creation and development of the people who populate his novels, and it shows; you will find yourself still thinking about them long after you finish the book.

Though in many respects this is a character-intense novel, author Putnam serves up an intriguing mystery for the Sheriff to solve. Putnam drops the reader into the case straight from the first sentence and the tension and pace do not let up until the final, epic showdown, a tribute to his exceptional writing skills. Like the first novel in the series, this is set in the 1950’s, in small-town America, an ambience that he recreates with astounding ease, transporting the reader there easily.

I did spot a couple of titillating teasers for what author Putnam may have in store for us as the series evolves. Bring on book three! Highly recommended for lovers of outstanding crime thrillers.
