I thought the ideas for the plot were very interesting. How the novel was written I found to be very distracting. Had I been reading the book instead of listening to it being read to me, I would have skipped over lots of the writing. Going back and forth between Eve's story and Charlie's story seemed to interfere with continuity.
Although some of the descriptive language used was quite interesting and well written, at times it was unnecessary and made the story much longer than it needed to be.
The book seemed to try to bring the Post Traumatic Stress views of war to the pre- 1950's view. They weren't the same. Battle Fatigue didn't have the same aura as PTS. (Remember, soldiers survive wounds now that they died from in the 40's.) I also found the "stress" that Charlene was under to find out about her cousin was not on the same level as Eve's, although that's not the way it was written. I found it hard to believe that they both had a connection to Rene'. Perhaps more should have been written about Rene than about Charlene.
