Truth or Dare? What began as a carefree afternoon of celebrating their college graduations for a group of ten friends, quickly turns dark when the girls of the group received word that an abusive ex-boyfriend, they had each dated in their time, had been release early from prison. Handsome, exotic and dangerous, John Miller has unfinished business with his latest ex-girlfriend, Taylor Johnson. With the help of her friends Kala, May, Judy and Cristy; Taylor put him behind bars with her testimony for almost killing her one cold November night, and he wants his payback. After he made his unwelcome appearance at their party, and made it clear he's still in love with Taylor and wants her back, they tried to move on with their day. Things, however, began to take a strange twist. After a game of truth or dare, the hostess of the party, May Jenkins, called out a name for her "ultimate dare," and little did she know she would have to take part. Dared to go in the dead of night to an alley with a violent and bloody history; Taylor, Kala and May witness the brutal murder of one of their friends. They escape from the killers grasp, barely making it out of the alley alive, but he saw them, and he knows who they are. That one event would spark a chain reaction of tragedies and chaos in their once serene lives. The friends are suddenly thrust into a deadly game of cat and mouse as the killer cyber-stalks them, watching their every move, hunting and torment them. Logan, who had yearned for Taylor's affection all through high school and college, finally felt could have his chance with her, but now with the threat of death looming over there heads, and her obsessive ex-boyfriend lurking around, would he ever get to have the future he'd dreamed of with her? Deadly secrets unfold as they draw closer to finding out who killed their friend, and why. Betrayal, greed, and obsession deepens the nightmare Taylor and her friends have been forced into, as they find out some friends are not who they seemed to be. Would they be able escape the killer's knife? Will love and the strong bonds of friendship bring them through the horrors befalling them? The Dare ends up taking them on one hell of a ride...
A group of young women are brought together by their violent past. Each one has been involved with the abusive John and he's about to be released from prison. Throw into the mix a frightening dare that goes murderously wrong and the women find themselves struggling for their lives. Who is their tormentor and what is their plan?
A slow start kicks into gear when we reach the titular dare and provides a satisfying plot. The relationships between the friends are well drawn and deepen their peril. My main drawback is that the book would have benefitted from further editing to cut away some of the fat and raise the pace. Some of the dialogue was over long and tended to be repetitive. Still, there is real tension and a scary enemy in this entertaining read.
Considering the amount of praising reviews I was surprised to find the book not to my liking. I enjoy horror books. The story was stale. It took far too long before there was any horror at all, and then it was of the unlikely kind.
The book starts with a group of friends gathering for a party. We learn to know a few of them through a compact back story. I think the storytelling would have been better if we had followed them through this troublesome time in life. Now we are told they have had a tough time, and that does not have the same impact. Then the party goes on. And on. And on. And... on. And I start to wonder if this is a romance and not a horror.
The point of view shifts a lot and sometimes I wonder if the shift has been in a middle of a paragraph. It is not a kind of storytelling I enjoy. I would have prefered to stay on two or three, people and controlled shifts between them. Now it feels like a pin-ball mashine and there are at least five points of view.
The story as such had potential. A man with desires to have sex and kill afterwards gets obsessed with a woman he wants but wants her to last for as long as possible. It is a wonderful base.
I am a huge fan of murder mysteries, and bought this book based on a friend's recommendation. I'm so glad that I did, because I enjoyed it very much. I worked as a policeman in a town just like the one this story is set in, and felt like I knew each one of the characters in the book personally. The author does an awesome job of painting pictures with her words, so that you can visualize each chapter being played out in your mind. I finished this book in one sitting, during a long plane ride. I would not have expected it to pull me in the way that it did, but I felt drawn to the characters in it, and wanted to keep turning pages to find out what was going to happen next. The author takes you on an emotional roller coaster of highs and lows, and I found that very refreshing. I look forward to reading more books by this author.
The synopsis is very detailed and I don't think I need to make any additional comment as to the plot. It's pretty original and I was kept intrigued and invested in the characters right up to the end. It's a bit slow to begin with, personally I would have liked a little more development of the individual back-stories rather than the build up to the party, but after that the main story gathers momentum and really develops well. This was so close to being a 5 Star review!
It's not easy to hold interest with a book this long but the author managed to do it. The story telling shifts rapidly from 1 character's point of view to another which is a little dizzying But the characters are very strong and the plot is fairly solid. The ending Turned out to be darker than I thought which surprised me.Overall it was worth reading and very chilling in suspenseful
This book is about a recently released from prison psychopath who wants revenge on a group of friends. This is a busy book, a lot going on with all the characters and their relationships. The story line is detailed and flows nicely. There are a few twists and turns that I didn’t see coming and I did not expect that ending for sure. An enjoyable read, I definitely recommend it.
The kind of story that has you wanting to crawl into the book, shake the characters and ask; "What are you thinking?"
The story line has you constantly thinking you know what's coming next and hoping you're wrong. If you are a consumer of thrillers and cliffhangers, I would recommend this title. It's an interesting read.
Suspenseful! This page turner was written with vivid descriptiveness and imagery keeping the reader intrigued to know what happens next. I found myself predicting what was to come and being excited when wrong. I enjoyed the journey and I look forward to reading more from Author Mia Carter.
It took me a while to get into this story thought it dragged a bit to start with but then I couldn't put it down. The characters should have been detectives themselves. Excellent read...
this book has all the ingredients that you need in a good book, keeps you trying to guess what is going to happen with the main characters and how the plot is going to unravel, i would recomend this to anyone
It is very long and drawn out. I found myself skipping a bit and still managed to keep up with the story. But the plot line is good and its a good start for the author.
This book kept me at the edge of my seat and up reading all night. I loved the characters. What they were put through is horrid. Sad about the people that die in the end, but no spoilers. I'm sure there is a sequel and I am waiting 😉
“The Dare” is a story about a group of friends who find themselves in the crosshairs of a psychopath. While I would categorize its genre as suspense, there is also plenty of romance. The book is long at over 760 pages but the story flows nicely. It kept me on my toes and had an ending I didn’t see coming!
It also seemed like the author did a lot of research on topics such as technology and science to keep the plot believable. A definite recommendation!
