With K-8 teachers in mind, Andrea Honigsfeld offers this user-friendly, accessible resource to address the diverse language and literacy proficiencies that exist in so many U.S. classrooms today. Andrea unpacks the five levels of language acquisition, based on the TESOL framework, and introduces practical strategies that can be applied across grade levels and content areas to support EL students' academic language and literacy development. With an emphasis on culturally and linguistically sustaining pedagogy, peer interaction, and scaffolding, Andrea offers instructional practices organized into five predictable strands at each level of language Filled with student vignettes, teacher and student work samples, and authentic classroom examples, Growing Language and Literacy will become every teacher's guide to moving their English learners from one stage of language acquisition to the next.
I particularly like how the book is structured, with insights into the lives of children at the start of a chapter followed by specific details on meeting their needs in all language domains. As an ESL teacher frequently tasked with helping classroom teachers, I think this book would be invaluable as a way to clearly show these teachers what they should do and why they should do it.
This book is great! As a Multilingual Learner Program Specialist, this is the first book I’d recommend to gen ed teachers. Each section provides clear, detailed guidance to support MLs at different proficiency levels.
I'm an experienced EL and Newcomer teacher, but I believe general ed teachers will find it easy to read. I appreciate all the relevant examples and know it will be a great resource as I plan lessons in the upcoming years.
This is a great resource for all teachers with ELL students. Looking forward to applying what I've learned in the new ELL Math class I'm teaching this year.
