This is a unique and delicious book. It is geography and history written from an African’s point of view.

The first chapter begins with misconceptions, which I found helpful. Chapters 4 and 5 summarize geology, climate and biogeography.

In chapter 2,3,6 the author integrates all of African history including Egypt, Northern Africa, the long influence of Middle Eastern Muslims. This puts in perspective the Arab interaction in the east with Ghana, North East with Ethiopia, and South East coast. In addition he links the imposed, failed theories of economic development and population distribution.

Chapter 7 has a broad reaching chapter summarizing Africa’s diverse religious worldview, languages, family structure and ethnicities. The remaining chapters cover the development of cities, political geographies, and topics related to economic geography. Globalization’s impact from colonization through post-independence are discussed from multiple angles.

As it was assembled by a geographer it is richly illustrated with maps, tables as well as pre-chapter advanced organizers and post-chapter key concepts and study questions. The style of writing is accessible, the chapters are the right length such that I read much of the book over a week that included 2 transcontinental flights.

I believe this would be an outstanding read for anyone who wants to know more about Africa and its place in the world.
