This is a story meant for children but it’s an equally thought-provoking tale for every reader, making one value the gifts we are blessed with and to be happy with what we are given even when striving for more. The story was simple and still very relatable, imparting a valuable lesson to its readers. The story uses magic and miracles to talk about the joys of sharing and finding happiness in every moment.
Overall, Tara is a magical journey that explores the true meaning of happiness.
‘Tara’ by Surabhi Sharma is a sentimental and inspirational story that can melt the reader’s heart and make one fall in love with the characters instantly. The story of Tara is the story of most pre-teen girls in India who are discriminated against either directly or indirectly by our century’s old patriarchal society.
Yet, Tara learns through the events in this story to change her attitude towards her situation rather than succumb to the many subtle injustices that chronicled her everyday life. What were those injustices and how did Tara manage to overcome them, that one can find out through reading this cute little short story cum novella. The book is fascinating, simply written, and easy to understand. Surabhi Sharma has a penchant for creating memorable characters who are loveable, realistic and stay with a reader long after the story is finished. She brings her characters to life by their traits more than by their personal physical descriptions which is a writing style that is used often in contemporary 21st century literature and creates more of an impact which I truly admire about her.
My favourite character in this story is someone called ‘Father’ and his interactions with Tara simply took my breath away. Any reader who wants some soul curry for their bleeding hearts can pick up this novella. Those readers who are feeling let down in life especially by circumstances that are out of their control must pick up ‘Tara’ to read. Anyone looking for a light read with a rural Indian perspective and with a bit of fantasy should definitely check out Surabhi Sharma’s innovative title called ‘Tara’.
The story was a calming read for me and I really benefited from the sagacious wisdom offered in its contents. Sharma has a way with telling the most simplest truths of life in an uncomplicated and rational style which still has the power to mesmerize the reader and make him or her shed a tear or two. The scene that really put a smile on my face was when ‘Snow White’ entered the humdrum and hard life of little Tara. Who is Snow White? What is her role in this Indian tale? Pick up your Kindle copy of ‘Tara’ and find out now! I highly recommend this short story to all readers who like their fiction to be simplistic, humble, unpretentious but motivating nevertheless.
I was transformed by this story and I hope the author would consider writing a full length novel based on the memorable and fascinating characters mentioned in this book. I look forward to reading more of Surabhi Sharma’s fiction in the near future. She truly is a talented writer and inspires many with her literature. Kudos!
‘Tara’ which incidentally in Hindi means a ‘star’ gets 5 stars from me! Well done Sharma! Continue to weave magic with your words and let your ‘Tara’ continue to shine brightly in the world of contemporary 21st century Indian literature.
Wow! Amazing read. Loved the concept of it with a little girl. People should read it to understand the meaning of true happiness and present is a gift.
This is a story meant for children.Reviewing these stories are always tough. So I will try my best to be a child. The story is about Tara and some magic that changes her life. But to be a perfect children's tale,it needs some pictures.Otherwise, the story would seem dull.Further, a positive point is the lucid language. I think with some pictures, the story will be a perfect one.
⚫️ It’s a novella. Can be read in a single sitting as it’s a small book. ⚫️ Written in wonderful language. ⚫️ Plot is amazing. ⚫️ It reminded me of my childhood. I used to read such stories at bedtime. So this one made me nostalgic. ⚫️ Description of village and environment stole my heart. ⚫️ Overall I loved it. ⚫️ Definitely recommended.
This is a sweet, meaningful story of a little girl, Tara. She dreams of a different world till actually finds herself in a mystical place. I found the story very relatable, simply making us realise the importance of valuing what we have. A small town and a young girl with big dreams. The author has conveyed an important truth with Tara, cherish your present, it is a gift.
Even though I edited the story for Surabhi, I realised the potential of this deep, thought-provoking story.
Tara is a story of a girl disappointed with her life. She wants to switch her life with her brother who has everything in his life she ever wanted. She has responsibilities on her little shoulders to help her family run through days smoothly.
One day while grazing her sheep on the hilltop lying under a tree she was watching the sky. A cloud was moving against the wind and a flying mat came out of it. It was a small dot at the beginning but got bigger as it came close to where Tara was. Will she got with it?
Read Tara to find what will happen next. A magical journey of finding happiness in every moment.

The book is about a little girl named Tara and her journey to finding happiness
My take:
Downloaded this book when I saw the Freebie alert on Twitter. The story is about a girl Tara who stays in mountains and her daily chore is taking the sheeps for grazing. It shows how she abhors her life due to the monotonous routine. Somewhere you sympathise with the girl who shares her family’s responsibilities.
The story is about two days in Tara’s life which changes her attitude and view of looking at life through an unknown encounter. The magic part is good and details little bit of philosophy on life.
The book has a nice takeaway and is apt to gift to children who get annoyed on not getting their demands fulfilled. For me it was a very light read which I completed in single sitting.
The pace of the book is medium. Characterisation of Tara is amazing. There are a lot of repititions in the story thereby hampering the pace. This could have easily been a short story in a book instead of a novella.
‘Tara’ by Surabhi Sharma is a story of a small girl named Tara who is disappointed with her life. She constantly dreams about switching her life with her little brother who according to her has everything she ever wanted to be hers. She is small but has all the responsibilities on her shoulders to help her family run through the day to day activities smoothly. Everything was going fine until one day when she’s really disappointed with her father for not getting the coat that she really wanted. That day when she was grazing her sheep on the hilltop and taking rest under a tree looking at the sky. She suddenly notices a cloud moving opposite side against the other clouds and as if chasing her. And all of a sudden a flying mat comes out it. To Tara’s surprise the flying mat is talking and telling her to come along with her to an unknown place promising her that she will be home in time and that it will take care of her sheep for her. Will Tara agree to the mat’s proposal of going to some another strange place? To know more read Tara.
My Views:
I loved the characters especially Tara and her brother who are always busy pulling each others’ leg. Even after fighting and pulling each others’ leg at the end of the day they are siblings and they both care for each other. The characters are very relatable and they have their own faults like every human being has but how even at such a small age Tara tries to understand the situation when somebody makes her understand and how even at such a small age she understands things.
I have read all of the books from the author and I actually love her writing style. She writes in a simple and lucid language which most people would find easy to read. The pace of the book was not too fast neither too slow. It was perfect.
The plot of the story was unique and would keep the readers curious to know what will happen next.
Overall, I enjoyed the story and would surely recommend the book to someone who is looking forward to read something short and adventurous.
This is a children’s story of a little girl named Tara. Tara is tired of her monotonous life. She hated running the household errands every day including grazing her sheep at the hilltops. This is a cute story that kids would love to read. It has a moral at the end that’s not only for small children but for grown ups as well. I like reading this thought-provoking story. Not many authors are writing children’s stories these days and since the author has taken a brilliant step in providing some worth-reading children literature, I am looking forward to reading more such stories from her.
A thought provoking tale of giving value to what we have in life. Even though on reading, I felt this to be a tale to be read to children especially at an age where every minuscule thing seems gargantuan and insurmountable, on further thoughts, Tara is each and every human in this world. It doesn't matter the age, there are only a handful among us who are satisfied with their lot in life and are content and happy. Most of us feel insufficient and unloved and what not, putting us down. Tara by Surabhi Sharma makes one think of the gifts we are blessed with and to be happy with what we are given even when striving for more . This short story definitely packs a punch!
Wow! What a delightful read. A lovely little story of a sweet little girl, Tara. Surabhi has captured the innocence of a little girl effectively. The narration is delicate, and the storyline is handled tenderly. The story seems to have come effortlessly from the author’s heart and reaches straight in there as a reader. An excellent job!! Keep it up, Surabhi.
