I love that Bhante insists that following Buddhist teachings and practicing mindfulness is a lifelong practice, not something you master. He makes it clear that he feels the same emotions as everyone else, and that he regularly makes mistakes, too. I think a lot of people feel deterred from trying meditation or persisting with it because of the idea that it's something you have to do perfectly to benefit from. Bhante is a world famous monk who has dedicated his life to his practice, and even he admits there is always room for improvement.

This biography really breaks down an invisible wall between everyday people and monks. The stories he shares are relatable to those in Western society, and shows how much we can all benefit from living in the present moment and spreading love.

Just like when sitting in the Blue Lotus listening to him on a Saturday morning! Bhante is such a gift as a teacher, and I especially liked the narrator, a book I want to read immediately again and plan to. You really need to contemplate and savor each lesson.

The title refers to Bhante as a "Simple Monk," but his teachings offer readers messages that penetrate our facades and leave much to contemplate. Easy to read these entertaining vignettes. It's the kind of book that once you finish, you are ready to read it again.
