I am the author of thirteen novels, most recently The Peculiarities, a historical fantasy out in September 2021. I've also written numerous novellas and short stories. My previous books include A Conspiracy of Paper which was named a New York Times Notable Book and won the 2001 Barry, MacAvity and Edgar awards for Best First novel. The Coffee Trader was also named a New York Times Notable Book and was selected by the New York Public Library as one of the year’s 25 Books to Remember. Several of these books are currently being developed for television or film. I have also worked on numerous comics projects, including Black Panther and Mystery Men for Marvel, The Spider and Green Hornet for Dynamite, and Angelica Tomorrow.
An ok Spider-Man story. A good introduction to the world of the gaming Spider-Man. I really do wish there was a lot more action in the book. The unravelling of a mystery style of the the book was good but a bit too slow.
A couple of complaints I did have in this book. Why there was a need to rip off a Daredevil storyline and character for this book. One thing I was upset about is do author forget how strong Spider-Man is? Yes he is as lean as Fisk is massive but the strength difference between them is completely unreal. Spider-Man can lift 10 tonnes, 15 after the other storyline. It annoyes keep forgetting this and turn7ng home into a punching bag. Daredevil Vs Fisk would be a competitive fight, a fight between Fisk and Spider-Man would be the equlivent of a strong toddler fighting a strong adult in their prime. See Back in Black for how a fight between the Kingpin and Spider-Man should go.
I the the game version of Spider-Man is getting his own comic now. This book is a great introduction to this world and finishes more or less where the game starts from. A lot of side characters are introduced in new roles and lives to be explored later in the game and comics.
This is a book based on the Marvel character and is a prequel to a video game. In this one, Wilson Fisk is trying to rebrand his reputation and Spider-Man is not buying it. Meanwhile, there is a copycat Spidey who is tarnishing the real Spidey's image.
This was a solid book that exceeded my expectations. I have read books based in other universes that are based on a game and they didn't work. This one is a self contained story but one can see how it sets up the story for the game. As for this story we do see familiar concepts like Peter having job troubles or relationship trouble with MJ. We see him doubting his role as Spider-Man because of these issues. The author handled all these well. What I liked about this story is the use of well known established characters and lesser known characters. We see characters like Kingpin and Norman Osborn while seeing characters like Echo and the Blood Spider. The final battle was great and it felt like it belonged because of the build up of the story even though this book is a quick read.
This is a new author and I have had not the best experiences with books based on video games, This book surprised me as I thought the author did a great job with the characters and the story. I was engaged throughout and I laughed out loud with one scene when Spider-Man walks into a bar catering to villains. All in all this was a fun read.
About as good as a videogame prequel novel can be, in all honesty, particularly when I have no intention of ever playing the game.
The narrator of the audiobook really nailed it, also. I completely bought his versions of Peter, Fisk, Maya Lopez and Bingham- with a talented voice performer like this, sometimes you really don't need a full cast.
A Most Happy Coincidence I Listened to This Book During the Release of the Hawkeye Series
Considering the fact that I love the games this book is based on, I figured I’d enjoy it, but I didn’t expect to love it as much as I did. This was tons of fun!
There’s a lot I liked here. First, Liss really gets the characters right, which is very important for characters as iconic as these. Spider-Man, MJ, Yuri, and others feel like they were taken straight out of the video game and put on the page. The writing style also complements this, especially when from Spidey’s perspective. I also think the plot here was good, which is essentially juggling Spider-Man and MJ trying to bring down Wilson Fisk as well as the new presence of a Spider-Man imposter, who commits a number of crimes that turn New York against the true Spider-Man. It’s a solid plot, one that I can easily see fitting into the game’s universe, and does a lot to establish many things that are hinted at in the game (this is a prequel, taking place about 6-18 months before the first game, if I had to guess). Finally, this was just a super fun read. It was great to spend some more time with these characters, get some exciting action, and a story that probably doesn’t warrant inclusion in a full game but is still worth telling.
Not a lot of big negatives here for me. I will say some side characters, namely Anika, Maya, and Bingham, took some time to grow on me. I also don’t think this is a super strong book in terms of story and characters—like, it’s not the best out there or anything—but for fans of the game, it’ll be a good time.
Overall this was a really enjoyable read. If you’re a fan of Insomniac’s take on Spider-Man, I think you’ll like this one. It’s a solid story in its own right and a great prequel as well.
Spider-Man bizi her haliyle macera dünyasına çekebilmeyi başarıyor. Konumuza edebiyat üzerinden devam edeceğimizden Spider-Man: Düşmanca Devralma kitabına geçiş yapabiliriz. Bir cumartesi gecesi New York tarzına dört dörtlük uyan Steve’in Yılan Deposu’nda yeni macerasına atılacak olan Örümcek Adam’ı neler beklemektedir sorusunun merakıyla başlarız kitaba.
Great introduction to characters that will be appearing In the game, interesting backstory with each character having the two main antagonists Blood Spider and Eco really well developed and fleshed out. The book really captures Peter Parkers struggle balancing his two lives and at times can be quite dark and doubtful Peter was going to get any kind of success. Worth reading if you are exited for the game and it will now be even more satisfying to take down the Kingpin himself
Good but not great, it did it’s job and made me more excited for the upcoming PS4 game. The continuity that Marvel and Insomniac have put together is a good one - plenty of classic Spidey and Old Parker Luck in there, but with new and interesting twists. And the way the ending leads directly into what we’ve been told is the beginning of the game was perfectly done. Bring on September 7 so that I can see if the game lives up to this setup!
The recent Sony Spiderman games are some of the best video games I've played, in no small part due to their excellent stories. I was hoping some of thay quality would have rubbed off here. It didn't.
The book wasn't dreadful - it had good moments. I imagine it's quite good to read before you play the games. But as a standalone novel, it didn't do much for me
This books not only does an awesome job setting up the relationships and status quo for the PS4 game but also stands alone as a pretty great one-shot Spider-Man story. Liss nails the Peter Parker dialogue and his very different relationships with MJ, Yuri and his enemies. Would absolutely read more Spider-Man novels. Just saying.
I was dead-on shocked by how gripped this book had me. After last years disappointment in Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man by James Reynolds, I was terrified that comic book characters and storytellings could not be applied to prose without losing a level charm, but luckily this book blew me away in almost every regard. Gripping story, compelling characters, genuinely emotional moments, and stakes that just kept rising and rising, David Liss absolutely charmed me with this novel. David Liss understands the character and world of Peter Parker extraordinarily well, and his love of comic books shone true in every paragraph. My only complaint is that very, very occasionally there is an awkwardly delivered piece of exposition or dialogue that could’ve been caught by an editor and left in an earlier draft, but that is an absolute nitpick. As a prequel as well, this game set up so many compelling questions towards the universe Insomniac is building with their upcoming title that I personally have been looking forward to for years. I am absolutely desperate for more, and luckily I’ve only got a few weeks to wait. If the writing of the game is even a fraction as compelling as this book, Spider-Man PS4 may be something I hold dear for a long time to come.
If you don't know, this book is a prequel for the upcoming PlayStation 4 Title Marvel's Spider-Man.
The writing style in this one was a bit odd, simplistic and straight to the point there is very little flowery language in this book. I came to appreciate it eventually, but it was slightly jarring at first. After I got my brain past the diction, it was a really excellent Spider-Man story at the core. It did everything right as far as I'm concerned. Fisk was written as the ruthless and horribly calculating villain over it all, Norman Osborne was mysteriously aloof and involved in some suspect ways, Echo and Blood Spider were given excellent characterization and humanity in their own right.
However, where this story really shines is in Peter himself. He's pulled between his obligation as Spider-Man and his real life. He has a reputation for being flaky, and it tolls on him to live this double life. His relationships with MJ, Aunt May, new ally Yuri Watanabe, and his Boss (Oi, thank you for that hint Mr. Liss) all struggle and have amazing (get it? amazing?) repercussions on him in both of his lives- and this all comes together in a set-up that makes it really hard not to get excited about the upcoming Spider-Man game.
In anticipation for finally playing the sequel to Marvel’s acclaimed Spider-Man video game, I decided now was a good time to catch up on all the material that comprises the series’ fictional universe. The first stop on this journey was the novel Hostile Takeover.
I’m going to be honest, video game tie-in novels with uninspired titles like hostile takeover do not feel me with much confidence. The best I was hoping for was an easy (and more importantly quick) read. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find not only a well-written story but a great examination of Spider-Man as a character as well.
Though the plot is lifted from countless comics (Bendis’ Ultimate Spider-Man and Mack’s Daredevil spring to mind), the stellar character work makes up for it. Spider-Man is well-realised, with both his heroic nature and fatal flaws all on display. He is witty yet tragic. Fun but frustrating. In short, he is spider-man in all his glory.
Also benefitting from the author’s work is Spidey’s girlfriend Mary Jane. A world apart from the toxic and frustrating MJ of the Rami films, this novel’s version of the character is strong, interesting and actually makes a believable partner and friend to the superhero.
Though our villains Echo, Kingpin and Blood Spider fair less well, they do remain consistently entertaining and believable throughout.
The author’s best quality is his ability to balance the superhero and mundane in a way that feels believable- especially given how rarely the genre fairs well outside a visual environment.
All in all, if you want a novel that works as a great intro to spider-man, acts as a fun prequel to the hit Sony video game and manages to be interesting in its own right, this novel is for you. It may not be the deepest work of fiction out there nor does it innovate to any significant degree, but taken on its own merits, Hostile Takeover is a great ride.
Kitap, Spider-Man'in yetkililer tarafından kanunsuz sayıldığı bir evrende geçiyor. Azılı düşmanlarından Wilson Fisk'in şehre dönmesinden kısa bir süre sonra yaşanan garip olaylar sebebiyle Kingpin'in yine pis işler peşinde olduğunu sezen friendly neighbourhood Spider-Manciğimiz, onu durdurmak için elinden geleni her şeyi yapacaktır. Tabii Fisk'in Spider-Man için bambaşka planları var.
Kitaba başladığım andan itibaren kitabı seveceğimi biliyordum. Tek çekincem "Acaba kitap sonradan bozar mı?" oldu fakat neyseki David Liss, Spider-Man: Düşmanca Devralma boyunca sağlam çizgisini hiç bozmadı.
Kitapta yansıtılan Spider-Man'i çok sevdim.
Wow, this book was so much better than I expected it to be. I thought almost all the characters were done really well. Kingpin has also always been one of my favorite marvel villains so you can’t really go wrong with that. The first half of the book was a little slow sometimes, but the second half was really gripling and a page-turner for me. It also makes some things that happen in the game a little clearer, especially the beginning of the game. If you’re a fan of the game I would highly suggest this one!
It's kind of hard to make a comic book.....book not corny, but this was is able to do so! Liss did a really good job at capturing Spider-Man as a human beneath the mask, the duality of his life, balance, all of it was well written and now it's just waiting to play the game to finish where this started!
Really good prequel for the game, and it makes me want to see where the story goes. Some interesting plots set up here. Very quick read too; I would have been done sooner if I had more time to just sit.
A great tale of what it means to be a hero and balance two lives. Those familiar with Spiderman will find much that is familiar and enough wrinkles to keep things interesting. The writing is fine and moves things along, only really shining when Peter is wisecracking. But the insight into the psych of spiderman was the most interesting piece. The book tries to cover things from too many perspectives instead of focusing on the main man but is still an enjoyable read.
3.5! Wish there was more personal conflict, ie with MJ, May, or against himself, but ultimately a pretty fun spidey story and game tie in. Didn’t expand my view of the world of the game too much or anything but I did have a good time while reading it!
It’s a lot of fun, with some surprising darkness involved. It’s hampered by being a prequel to the video game (which is the big debut of this Spidey universe), so it couldn’t tackle any heavy hitter characters. In fact, some characters are humorously talked around. Still, it managed to turn a D-list Spider-Man villain into a legitimate and interesting threat. It reads in the voice and tone the video game presented, which I appreciated. All in all, a good Spider-Man story, if not particularly earth shattering.
