Not only is the world-building incredible, the depth to the characters and chemistry between them is excellent. An awesome, adventurous high fantasy story continued.
If you enjoy epic fantasy books, then this trilogy is for you. The story of the dregs continues with Mara finally getting away from the Order. I can't wait for the next book and the outcome of the inevitable war.
I can’t tell you how much I am enjoying this series! The action and adventure with a slow-building romance makes this a big hit for me. I love a strong heroine and Mara is just that! It is hard not to fall in love with these characters. Very well done!
It's been several years since I read the first novel in this series, but I fell into the second novel with ease, not needing to re-read the first to keep up with events. It's a fast moving and action filled YA novel that caught my attention from the first page and held it to the last.
Mara is no longer a Dreg. But she's also no longer free. Captured by the Order, she is forced to submit or see her family and town burn to the ground. She is very much aware that the order are her enemies. But with so much betrayal in the recent past, she no longer knows who is a friend. With a prophecy declaring that she is the one to bring the Order down, she's no less helpless against the might of those who hold her.
The characters and the world building are both exceptionally well done; the world springs to life around you and the characters feel very much alive. The narrative can be a tad predictable at points, but in fairness I'm long past the YA market it's aimed at, so that might be an age thing. There are a handful of well known tropes utilised as well, but again a less experienced younger reader may not clock them. There's a minor romance angle throughout, but it's very much in the background which worked well for me.
It doesn't shy away from the darkness, even if it is a clean and YA friendly novel with no real gore or obscenity. The stakes are high and the consequences severe. The author isn't afraid of killing off characters, although the reader is spared the gory details. Because of this, there is a real element of tension throughout.
All in all, a well written and well paced tale that leaves me hankering to know what happens next. Big things are on the horizon and I need to be a part of that. So adult or YA alike, this is one I'd recommend.
No words could make justice to the beauty of this masterpiece! Gifted has craddled my heart in its hands and ripped it to pieces. It has made me fall in love with the characters, it made laugh in some places, it made me rage and cry, it made me FEEL! There is no "book 2 syndrome" here, as is the case with so many trilogies out there. And if this not enough to convince you to read this series, I'm going to say one more thing about it: I went to bed with chapter 3 and falled asleep after epilogue🤷♀️ Yep, is THAT good! Now I'm on my lunch break and starting book 3, buh-bye! 😁
#8 Gifted (book2) and #9 Miestryri (book 2.5) by Bethany Hoeflich #KUCHALLENGE2020
Next two in this series. Getting better and better. Gifted follows our heroine to the Capital of her country where she meets up With old friends and enemies.
Miestryri takes Steel, now Crown Prince, back to his home where his sister challenges him to his thrown, and he finds out several major secrets.
More twists and turns as we gear up for the climax in book 3. Read straight through both of these. Will be starting Order (Book3 ) after supper.
